- inactive, on 05/29/2009, -1/+50End slavery already we are in the 21st century. All people deserve to be free...
- inactive, on 05/29/2009, -10/+49Oh you mean THAT kind of bondage...
- zip000, on 05/29/2009, -1/+21Um...
Old testament example:
However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. (Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT)
New Testament example:
Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. (Ephesians 6:5 NLT)
- Shwaavay, on 05/29/2009, -7/+26How does one go about getting a slave nowadays... Is there a website I can order from or something?
- cygnus2112, on 05/29/2009, -2/+20Ruby Dhalla, a popular MP up here in Canada, has been accused by 3 nanny caregivers of long hours, slave labor, withholding their passports, etc. Due to no oversight of the program, a lot of people abuse the system and get these people to work in their houses for $2-$3/hour, while dangling hopes of immigration in front of them.
Pretty sick. Slavery shouldn't exist in this age. - JFitzpatrick, on 05/29/2009, -0/+16If you were one of my students, I wouldn't even point out how stupid that statement is. I'd just stare at you while the rest of the class pointed out what a dumb ass you are. I'll save the lengthy discourse on your dumbassery for another Digg reader.
- MrCheerios, on 05/29/2009, -0/+15You could always choose to be a bum. Real slaves do not have that choice.
- inactive, on 05/29/2009, -0/+11The entire city of dubai is based on this system.
- techdever, on 05/29/2009, -0/+11just wanted to say we are all counting on you!
- inactive, on 05/29/2009, -1/+11You know, the Bible was used to justify slavery hear in the US. Yeah yeah, I know, "But we changed!" I just wanted to remind people that really, we're not that far from them.
- roddack, on 05/29/2009, -2/+12Ah nothing like the human desire of justice in the form of revenge
- NikoKun, on 05/29/2009, -0/+9In a perfect world, everyone would be automatically free, and free in the most true meaning of the word.
But we aren't free, and freedom always needs to be fought for.
It's just that not everyone CAN fight for themselves... And as much as I'd support an anarchist society (true freedom) where everyone protected themselves and a proper balance of freedom was maintained, humans just don't seem capable of doing that, and horrible things would end up happening.
The strong must protect the freedom of the weak in some cases. =/ - minoss, on 05/29/2009, -1/+10Wage slavery? You're more than welcome to turn amish. Or at least build your own house and grow your own food.
- lisaawesome, on 05/29/2009, -4/+13My vagina hurts now :(
- Mikey129, on 05/29/2009, -1/+10I was excited too...
- slappy83, on 05/29/2009, -4/+12I saw bondage and was like "hell yeah". Then I saw pepper rubbed into my vagina and got really aroused. After that I was too tired to keep reading.
- lived666, on 05/29/2009, -3/+11America should end the drug war and start a war on slavery.
- inactive, on 05/29/2009, -7/+14OK debt isn't slavery - you voluntarily borrowed money with predetermined conditions to pay it back. debt is a contract you willingly entered into. maybe you should learn how to manage your money. then, perhaps, you wouldn't do something idiotic like comparing debt to human slavery
- guhpol, on 05/29/2009, -2/+9Next door to you, there may be people being exploited!
- seoul_scurry, on 05/29/2009, -0/+6.and you know slavery is better than what they would endure in their own country... how?
- roddack, on 05/29/2009, -3/+9So you are saying freedom really is nothing more than an extension of violence and that violence is effectively the supreme authority from what all other aspects of freedom are derived?
- Rhythmix, on 05/29/2009, -1/+7I'm not even going to point out how stupid you just made yourself look.
- Rhythmix, on 05/29/2009, -1/+7Do it for the sake of argument.
- dondochaka, on 05/29/2009, -1/+7Freedom is not something you earn, it's a right, and it's morally yours by default. You don't have to fight for your rights, although you should because they are valuable.
- Rhythmix, on 05/29/2009, -1/+6:)
- ScionAltera, on 05/29/2009, -1/+6I dunno, I'm pretty tired of wars in general. Maybe we should just stop and chill out for awhile instead.
- diggerpleez, on 05/29/2009, -1/+6Wage slavery.... Because you are not allowed to get a better job. It's impossible.
- idiggyou2, on 05/29/2009, -1/+6Yeah.. the belief that there aren't any females on Digg is so intensely strong that I could flash you my vagina... and you'll still doubt I'm female.
- Rhythmix, on 05/29/2009, -1/+5Yeah because the Civil War ended slavery all around the world.
/s - rkthoadan, on 05/29/2009, -2/+6It's far worse than most of us can imagine.
There are more people in slavery now than at any other time in human history.
http://matador.org/10-shocking-facts-about-global- ... - WIT415, on 05/29/2009, -1/+5Those numbers are deceiving. Based on raw numbers then yes i would agree that there are more people in slavery today but in proportion to the world population, I don't think so.
- MacBandit, on 05/29/2009, -6/+10Guys don't have vaginas. We know that you aren't a girl because there aren't any on Digg.
- nepidae, on 05/29/2009, -2/+5I love awareness campaigns. It makes me feel like I'm helping without having to do any work.
- diggopolous, on 05/29/2009, -1/+4and ***** you, you ***** *****.
- Joshper85, on 05/29/2009, -1/+4Well maybe we are back in the 18th century I mean Pirates are back too
- lisaawesome, on 05/29/2009, -2/+5I feel that idiggyou2. Yeah it's a moderately funny stereotype that there are no girls here but it does get kinda old. Sometimes gender specific comments are actually related to the submitted content but you always know it will be followed by someone pointing out that there are no girls on Digg. The joke has just been done to death!
- Boogalou007, on 05/29/2009, -1/+4"but I think slave isn't all wrong if they have respectful 'master'."
Wow, just... WOW. Wish I could dig you down twice... - Leezus, on 05/29/2009, -0/+3Hero.
- diemunkiesdie, on 05/29/2009, -1/+3@Gustomucho, those are the same retarded arguments that were made by the south before the U.S. civil war. They were refuted about 200 years ago so I feel no need to do that again.
- diggopolous, on 05/29/2009, -3/+5Ok, I'll get right on it!
- MWeather, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2"@MWeather:
My point is that rights exist independent of whether other people actually respect them or not"
Well, of course they do. But having rights and being free are two entirely different things.
Rights belong to everyone by default. Freedom belongs only to those who take it or are lucky enough to have others take it for them, and rightfully so.
It's no easy task becoming free, and it's even harder to keep things that way. If you're unwilling to fight for your freedom, legislatively or otherwise, you do not deserve it. If you have freedom and you haven't done anything to obtain it or keep it, then you're leeching off the blood and sweat of people who do deserve it.
Such people don't value freedom, and a free society that does not value freedom does not remain free for long. - JCPahl, on 05/29/2009, -1/+3Yes but that's retarded.
- Rhythmix, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2It's still the same principle. If you compare this abusive aunt and a slave owner there wouldn't be much difference.
Your idea of true slavery has been long gone and has been sanitized by words such as child labor. - zip000, on 05/29/2009, -2/+4It's a little more complicated than that. There are debt situations outside of: oh I spent too much on my credit card, or I bought a house I couldn't really afford.
Think of situations like "the company store" where workers work for a ridiculously small amount of "money" which is only spendable at a store owned by the employer. Or the employer charging the worker for supplies in excess of what they make, so they have to continue to work for the company indefinitely.
Debt can be a form of slavery. - Nairebis, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2Children (especially a 12 year old) have no legal rights to leave their guardians. That's why this needs to be treated as what it is: child abuse.
Both child abuse and slavery are horrific, but the two are completely different concepts.
Otherwise, you have 12 year olds claiming to be "slaves" because their parents "force" them to take out the trash and help out around the house. That's not slavery, that's parenting. But beating that kid so severely is child abuse.
It's actually bizarre that anyone would argue this point. - MWeather, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2"You don't have to fight for your rights"
Name a free person who didn't ether fight for their rights, or have someone else fight for their rights. - bombula, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2If you were really a member of mensa, you'd be smart enough to know how stupid it is to boast about being smart.
- inactive, on 05/29/2009, -1/+3I would still rather have machines do the work thanks, so homeless and jobless will still be around untill the entire 5 days a week 9 to 5 model is updated to match how much work is done by machines.
- insanebrain, on 05/29/2009, -2/+4get off your lazy ass and do it yourself.
- zip000, on 05/29/2009, -1/+3You're wrong. I care. If what I said is inaccurate I want to know about it. I don't think that you've really undercut my argument - not really an argument really - all that much however.
I'm just pointing out that slavery is or was sanctioned by Christianity as well as Islam. Personally, I'm an atheist so I feel the same way about both religions. Of course Atheists have likely practiced slavery as well. -
