France Will Urge UN to Decriminalise Homosexuality Worldwide
afp.google.com — France plans to ask the United Nations to push for homosexuality to be decriminalised around the globe, a government minister said Saturday, as gays and lesbians worldwide marked the International Day Against Homophobia. Paris would push for "a European initiative calling for the universal decriminalisation of homosexuality,"

It wasn't that long ago that you could get jail time for homosexual sex. Between two consenting adults. In your own home. For up to ten years. In certain states. IN THE GOOD OLD US-OF-A.
http://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/06/26/scotus.sodomy/- sgiffy, on 05/18/2008, -0/+3It really is amazing how far the gays rights movement has come in its about 30 years of solid existence. To go from it being illegal to be gay, to having gay marriage or civil unions in many states is pretty damn impressive.
- chkdg8, on 05/18/2008, -0/+6Times sure have changed for the better. Gay bashing and racism is about as low as you can get in the US. Let's move forward.
- zspitfire04, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1It's changed a lot. I notice here in California, a Fag is the same thing as calling someone a retard or a stupid ass. I mean it's bad yes, but it doesn't mean what it used to. Friends call eachother it just messing around with eachother. Same with racism. A lot of people find it funny not because they are racist but because it seems so archaic.
- NotThatGuy, on 05/18/2008, -2/+3Nice sentiment, but if they think this will change anything they are fooling themselves.
- positron, on 05/18/2008, -3/+1Agreed. Just as it is time for governments to stop telling people what they can and can't do in the privacy of their own bedroom, it is also time for the UN to stop telling countries what they can and can't do within the confines of their own borders.
- Beveridge89, on 05/18/2008, -1/+3Why should it? The one problem with the UN is that it gives equal voice to those who abuse basic human rights, not that it interferes. Why would you object to anyone telling a dictator he has to treat his subjects as humans, even if it won't be listened to?

- zspitfire04, on 05/18/2008, -0/+3It's about damn time!
Who knows how many have been abused/killed because of it. - InTheBurbs, on 05/18/2008, -0/+2It would be nice to see, unfortunately the sort of countries who still treat homosexuality as a crime probably aren't the sort who pay much attention to what the UN says.
Until the citizens of those countries change their attitudes and demand the same from their governments there's very little anyone else can do. - TwoKill, on 05/18/2008, -0/+3Better late then never; I can only dream that I will be alive for long enough to see all people have equal rights.
- sgiffy, on 05/18/2008, -1/+3Good. There is absolutely no legitimate reason for denying gays and lesbians all the same rights as heterosexuals.
- rockrobot, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1Is anyone else not surprised it was France?
