- deema1, on 03/22/2009, -9/+85I remember a number of people on Digg calling for revenge deaths of Oakland police officers on the heels of Oscar Grant's horrible murder on New Year's Day. When you read stories like this, you have to admit that this is hardly worth cheering about. Police officers take a lot of heat from both sides while protecting and serving the community. They definitely don't get as much praise as they deserve because the bad cops get so much more attention.
- woodrow8292, on 03/22/2009, -26/+98Thanks you to all those who risk their lives for us on a daily basis.
Thoughts and prayers to the families. - inactive, on 03/22/2009, -12/+82From the AP story: "People lingered at the scene of the first shooting. About 20 bystanders taunted police."
Disgusting. - AquaOSX, on 03/22/2009, -6/+67Ugh. Oakland, you're my home, and I love you... but god damn, this ***** has to stop.
- btschul, on 03/22/2009, -4/+60Oh, the hypocrisy. I just came from another article where the comment "***** the police" had about +20 diggs.
- EricAnderton, on 03/22/2009, -12/+61Here's the thing: putting on a badge and a uniform should not be on the same level with walking into a war zone.
My condolences to Oakland's finest, and my thanks to those that risk their lives to serve the public trust. - maz2331, on 03/22/2009, -6/+50FTA:
"Authorities discovered the alleged gunman, 27-year-old LaVelle Mixon, had an extensive criminal history. At the time of the shooting, he was in violation of parole for assault with a deadly weapon, police said."
Basically, he was about to go back to prison and decided to kill or die to avoid it.
The big question is why someone gets parole on "assault with a deadly weapon" charges. Non-violent offenders are the ones to consider being easier on, not the violent thugs with rap-sheets a yard long. - unknownpoltroon, on 03/22/2009, -2/+43BEcause there is no minimum sentencing for violent offenders, but there often is one for drug offenders. So when overcrowding gives the choice between letting Hannibal lecter go or letting Bob pot dealer go, lecter gets turned loose because Bob HAS to stay in jail for 5 years by law, while Lecter can be paroled if they need the bedspace.
- Shipyaad, on 03/22/2009, -5/+42Wow, that's ***** awesome. Good job, *****. The only reason that Oakville doesn't look like downtown Fallujia is because of the cops.
- Elizabeth9, on 03/22/2009, -17/+53Very sad for the police officers' families, friends and co-workers.
- pacokorn77, on 03/22/2009, -4/+34"Four Officers Shot..."
Oh *****, where?
"...in Oakland."
oh - jsuther, on 03/22/2009, -3/+32On parole for assault with a deadly weapon huh, maybe if the jails were not full of people serving mandatory sentences for victimless crimes like smoking pot they would still have room to keep the violent criminals.
- Shipyaad, on 03/22/2009, -2/+30I hardly think the cops are responsible for the terror in Oalkand. There were 127 gun-related deaths in that town last year, 6 of which involved police. The rest was gang violence.
- Shipyaad, on 03/22/2009, -3/+30Correction: 4 officers dead.
Also, the shooter had a no-bail arrest warrant out on him for violating his parole with respect to an assault with a deadly weapon charge. - iizh, on 03/22/2009, -17/+39Digg's armchair warriors always crack me up. Skinny twits saying ***** the police on the internet... Do these jokers know how ridiculous they sound?
- arcangelgabriel, on 03/22/2009, -20/+39My fallen brothers. My prayers go out to you and your families.
May flights of Angels guide you home.
Correcting the headline, 3 officers Dead, I critically injured, 1 injured but released.
I've been doing this job too long...too long. - EMGroup, on 03/22/2009, -8/+26I was watching the newscoverage on the TV. One officer had the bullet graze his head. I hope the police officers recover and that Oakland can calm down.
- casf1b, on 03/22/2009, -5/+22I think your statement speaks more about you then you realize synapz.
- Codename46, on 03/22/2009, -4/+21Ironic how this happened in a state with one of the strictest gun control laws in the nation.
- HueyFreeman02, on 03/22/2009, -1/+18It's kinda ***** up how people are turning this into their own tirade against religion when it's really just a comment wishing the best to the families and critically ill officer.
- inactive, on 03/22/2009, -8/+25It's not racism.
It's a fact.
Any time someone says something about a black person that another black person doesn't like, they shout racism. Well, enough of that. Get your collective act together and people will not have a valid argument about the behavior of the idiots in the ghettos of America. Until then, take your criticism like a man.
This is also known as "The Truth".
The truth hurts. - Pigeon, on 03/22/2009, -2/+18Here in the UK, the area I live in, 71% of youth crime (by peoples under 22) is by blacks. Yet when I mention this, and say the black community should sort out letting their kids join the "Ima ganstar init blud" gangs I get called a racist. The guy I sit next to at work is black, he is one of nicest, intelligent, fun, caring people I know. It's a pleasure working with him. I don't care what colour you are, but if your community has a problem ***** admit it and sort it out.
- inactive, on 03/22/2009, -2/+18If Oakland didn't have stringent gun control laws, I'd agree with this. But since people who follow the law would be unarmed and defenseless, a lot of innocent people would get hurt in this scenario.
- inactive, on 03/22/2009, -1/+17Those were BART cops not Oakland Police officers.
- deema1, on 03/22/2009, -5/+21I have a solution. Tell all cops to take an indefinite leave of absence. Let's see what the residents think, then. They won't be able to use the excuse of one horrific accident to justify the slaughter of those who selflessly put themselves in harm's way to protect a community of ingrates. Pull out the cops so they can see what their alternative is.
- p51d007, on 03/22/2009, -8/+23See how well the "gun control" laws work? I bet the anti-2nd amendment people will say that the officers would be alive today...if we only had stricter laws about guns. LMAO
- inactive, on 03/22/2009, -2/+17Conservative judges allowing him to carry the weapon?
Put down the bong and stop drinking the bong water.
Convicted felons are not allowed to carry weapons.
His weapon was clearly illegal.
Besides, this was in California - which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the entire country.
You have shot an own goal and proved my point - outlaws will have guns even if they are illegal. - arcangelgabriel, on 03/22/2009, -13/+28And you'll be dug down because you're an incompetent boob who reacts to the standout incidents with bad police and never the the hundreds of daily police interactions that are professional and beneficial.
Bravo. - inactive, on 03/22/2009, -6/+21BS.
It has nothing to do with economics.
It has more to do with laziness and stupidity. 50 years of headstart and investment in education in black areas, and blacks still surprise us with a 50% illiteracy rate - this is worse than some parts of Africa.
A black man, whose father was an illegal alien from Africa has risen to the position of President.
On a global scale, Black people in America are rich and undeservedly so.
I have been to much poorer places than anyplace in America and seen real poverty in Asia, yet it was safe to walk among the locals.
Not so in America's ghettos.
There are no shortages of automobiles nor fancy items to purchase. Every kid has a cellphone. Poverty is no excuse at all.
There are poor Asian neighborhoods, poor Italian neighborhoods, poor neighborhoods of every kind which are safe places to raise a family and live. Once the poor population is black, it becomes a war zone. There are no safe black cities in America. Why is this? They are richer than places like Thailand by far... yet...
During the 1980's the Soviet Union did a documentary on America and they were trying to show the dark side. They went into the homes of poor whining, bellyaching, crybaby blacks and listened to their sob stories about how poor they were and how the white man kept them down.
The Russians watched this on television and were amazed at the show - but the effect was not one that the Soviet had sought after.
You see, the Russians heard all this whining and whingeing and BS, and looked in the background and saw microwave ovens, VCRs, food processors, modern washing machines... things that they could only dream of.
Blacks in America are not anywhere near as poor as they would be had they stayed behind in Africa. Just look at the pictures of Obummer's brothers. Blacks in America have been HUGE beneficiaries of their move to America - yet they are totally ignorant of the fact.
Let's see how Obama's brothers have fared, shall we:

Wannabe anarchists whose first resort would be to call the cops if they ever actually encountered the kinds of ghetto thugs that these cops have to deal with. - skyjis6, on 03/22/2009, -6/+20Just goes to show how serious that job is at times. I hope Bay Area PDs can stick to being some of the most tolerant and level headed departments in our country after a serious incident like this.
- flip2trip, on 03/22/2009, -1/+15Welcome to digg where when you offer condolences and prayer to the families experiencing tragedies, you get attacked and dugg down.
Most of digg is just silly, but you guys attacking well wishers are just despicable. - pault107, on 03/22/2009, -0/+14I'm not sure it's hypocrisy - I think there are just a lot of people here with polarised views.
- inactive, on 03/22/2009, -0/+14This could happen anywhere. There's a lot of crazy people out there.
- 1hrSleep, on 03/22/2009, -3/+16Uh, is it racism if it's true? Were they black?
- iizh, on 03/22/2009, -3/+16But but but... I need to look tough on the internet! How am I going to do that if I don't rage against the police!?
- inactive, on 03/22/2009, -10/+23The only difference between those 20 bystanders and diggers who hate the cops is that 100% of you will never have the balls to publicly taunt the cops. No, sitting behind a computer screen and sipping on your latte isn't public.
- neverender, on 03/22/2009, -0/+13exactly, long time residents are even saying its worse now then it was during the 80's crack wars.
124 homicides last year.... - arcangelgabriel, on 03/22/2009, -4/+17I have to testify in court on a regular basis and prove the charges I level at people, I'm held accountable for my actions and every move I make.
I dare you to stand at these officers funerals and offer your opinions, proof and sworn testimony in a public forum like I have to.
But you won't, you're another internet tough guy.
You're mom's upstairs, calling you to breakfast. - tonmil, on 03/22/2009, -4/+17Skum in Oakland
- arcangelgabriel, on 03/22/2009, -1/+13I'm sure they do, at least to supervisors, but ***** tends to happen at the speed of light. All the firepower in the world doesn't help if you can't get to it.
- inactive, on 03/22/2009, -5/+16Of course they were, look at the pics before the left wing media takes them down.
The only real racists left in America are blacks, who are openly disrespectful and derisive toward whites.
A black President is in the White House, so get over it. Racism is dead except for in the minds of racist blacks. - arcangelgabriel, on 03/22/2009, -2/+12@ reepax
That would be the last time I did an internal investigation on an officer and ended up getting him fired for excessive force.
Anything else? - DiggDuggin, on 03/22/2009, -1/+11And this is coming from "pimpdawg". I don't know what to say but WTF?
- Trekhawk, on 03/22/2009, -0/+10"...reporting that two officers had been shot, possibly with an assault-type rifle"
From all the reports I've read, it doesn't sound like anyone is even certain the guy even used an "assault rifle" which believe me is the most misapplied and commonly abused word in media coverage.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2 ... - miezu78, on 03/22/2009, -1/+11yes because the officers that got shot were the same one that shot that man in the subway....oh WAIT THEY ARE NOT THE SAME PEOPLE!!! so how is payback a bitch? is it because an officer killed someone now someone killed an officer??? if thats the case, cant one argue that if a human shoots a human then another human shoots another human well according to you thats payback?
- edwadokun, on 03/22/2009, -0/+10there is nothing that says if this was in relation with the BART shooting. just because people support this guys actions does not mean it is the right thing to do.. the BART incident was tragic and uncalled for. and that police officer is going to get what he deserves. but just because one cop messes up doesnt they all deserve punishment. how pissed would you be if someone in your family stole something and you had to go to jail for it. maybe at times there are some few bad eggs in the law enforcement and deserve some kind of punishment, but that sure as hell isnt for you or any of us to decied but the justice system and those appointed to uphold it. i understand what you are saying but you better change it because its that kind of attitude that will get you behind your own set of bars
- arcangelgabriel, on 03/22/2009, -6/+16Why, Because after a number of years in South East Asia and pushing 20 in law enforcement I have no belief in God. I offer my prayers to the families of the fallen out of respect and understanding.
I cling to my childhood notions of guardians, it offers some solace when nothing else makes ***** sense.
Does that answer your question? - Sealbhach, on 03/22/2009, -7/+16Rap music is evil.
- flip2trip, on 03/22/2009, -4/+13@pheonixavatar--He wasn't allowed to have this gun, he was on parole.
God you gun-grabbers are stupid. -
