          First, I didn't present my own views in that statement. For all you know, I'm completely against people who are secular progressives in every possible way. What I was making was essentially an existence claim for a set of people who would qualify as secular progressives and who would also take exception to the fellow's actions. I think that it's pretty obvious that such a group exists (the contributing writers to and majority readership of Feministing would be an example, note that this isn't an endorsement of their views on my part). I'm guessing that you would concede this point.

          Second, it's not entirely clear that something is always exchanged for sex. Could you demonstrate this claim? Please don't fall back upon, "it's just true" or "because I said so" as these don't qualify as valid evidence for such an assertion.

          Third, I'm not against legalizing prostitution (for a variety of reasons ranging from the protection and safety of the workers to women's rights issues and public health concerns).

          Fourth, I know it was just a thoughtless ad hominem, but I'd like to know how my comment somehow makes me, "as bad as the Christians."

          Fifth, I'd like to know if you acknolwledge a difference between those agreements that are reached under coercion/under exploitive circumstances and those that aren't. If so, then why do you believe that this circumstance is not in the former category.

            However, putting that aside, are you seriously claiming that Christians ask to trade money or authority for sex more often than other sets of people? If you truly think this, you're incredibly naive.

          Actually, from reading digg, I've learned that female public school teachers are the biggest systematic threat to sexually molest minors.

A huge motivator for preaching a particular subject is often a weakness in that area. Thus we find people passing bills in Congress to ban gay marriage, or preaching the evil nature of homosexuality and getting caught sucking some guy off. Telling other people not to do certain things often makes people feel secure in themselves in that they have made up for their sins. They haven't but whatever floats your boat I guess.

The difference is that they recognize and accept their wrong doings, and should try to conduct themselves better. We all fall short, what we do after is what should define us.

    When Digg uses this as an opportunity to bash Christianity, you need to realise that the religion itself doesn't promote these sort of events. You can provide all the excerpts from Leviticus you want, but the overwhelming message of Christianity is (or should be) tolerance, respect, and morality.

    Yeah, I'm going to get buried. I just want this stupid ignorance and intolerance to stop.

However, my problem is when people tout themselves as being more moral or virtuous than others simply because they are Christian, Muslim, Hindu, etc.

      Yes the perfect Christian/etc does not exist, but this man was preying on that woman. He knew that there was something that she needed and he could give it to her. (And to be honest, who knows how many times he has done it in the past.) Instead of doing the moral thing and simply working something out (that didn't involve bartering for sex), he decided to go the other route.

      Yes Christianity doesn't support these sorts of things... but once a religion or religious people decide that it's going to hold some sort of higher moral ground over other people while not "practicing what they preach," they deserve to have their ***** called out and be bashed into the ground. Hypocrisy, in any form, should not be tolerated.

It always seems to infer that, if it weren't for the threat of burning in hell for all eternity, you would run around all day murdering and raping people. Do you have some pent up desire to do this, but only fantasize about it because you are terrified at what the repercussions /could/ be? Or do you expect the worst in people, and assume that everyone in the world besides yourself will turn animalistic, given the chance?

          To answer your question more directly, I would say that, being a good person keeps a person from 'sinning'.

      I would have agreed with you 100% if it weren't for the creation of the universe. To really try to imagine matter suddenly coming into existence really is the definition of a god-like act to me.. it's everything /after that/ that I have a problem with believing.
