Five feared dead in Tokyo stabbing rampage
news.yahoo.com — As many as five people might have died and at least 10 more were wounded after a man went on a knife rampage through Tokyo's popular electronics district on Sunday, a fire department official said. The man, identified as a 25-year-old member of one of Japan's yakuza crime syndicates, began shouting and stabbing passers-by in the Akihabara area...

A spokeswoman for the Tokyo Metropolitan Police confirmed that at least six people had been killed and another 12 wounded during the attack in a crowded street.- luke16, on 06/08/2008, -2/+14It has now been reported 7 have died.

You can be friends with the bosses, from what I've seen, because they're nicer and more like gentlemen, but the soldiers are just violent assholes. Anyways, my friends name is Seiki and he lives in a huge apartment above the pachinko parlor that he owns and for the past 2 years, every time I've visited him he has had a brand new white SUV. I could go on, but what's the point, you won't believe it anyway.

I rather thought that was more interesting.- Blandyman, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1At first I thought it was two people (a janitor and a mental patient he broke out of the asylum simply to join the rampage) but then i realized it was just a simple psycho/janitor. Much less worthy of a movie :(

- masterm1nd, on 06/08/2008, -13/+13Yeah, because someone would have shot the guy after stabbing number 2...
- twiztidsinz, on 06/08/2008, -15/+9Why?
Because everyone would carry a gun if they could?
Wouldn't that mean he would have carried a gun as well?
Chances are, regardless of the weapon laws over there, he would have continued to do what he did till a police officer arrived. Which I'm guessing is what happened anyway. - publiclurker, on 06/08/2008, -15/+25Right, just like in the US. Please keep your fantasies of firearm augmented manhood to yourself.
- masterm1nd, on 06/08/2008, -16/+12Ok, but If I were there and had a gun I would have stopped the guy after I knew he meant business, thus saving lives. Not sure what there is to argue.
- twiztidsinz, on 06/08/2008, -10/+4If you were there and had a gun you would be arrested, thus not saving lives.
- peticsu, on 06/08/2008, -4/+16Japan has a democracy, let them legislate the laws they want to legislate...
I always hear people moan about sovereignty...let them have theirs... - praisethelard, on 06/08/2008, -7/+14Right, because the right to bear arms means everyone's strapped and ready to take on any evil-doers.
- masterm1nd, on 06/08/2008, -13/+6"If you were there and had a gun you would be arrested, thus not saving lives."
Obviously I'm referring to an alternate playout of the situation in which it would have been legal for me to have the gun. And even if not, I wouldn't be arrested until after I pulled out my gun and stopped the guy.
"Japan has a democracy, let them legislate the laws they want to legislate...
I always hear people moan about sovereignty...let them have theirs..."
I'm not asking they change their laws, just stating my opinion.
"Right, because the right to bear arms means everyone's strapped and ready to take on any evil-doers."
It was in a crowded area of a large city in an already crowded nation. You should look up stats on how many decide to carry guns when allowed and then look up how many people were near this incident...
And to publiclurker, if people in the US were given their full freedom to bear arms, 911 wouldn't have been successful, and something tells me we would not be in any wars either... At least think about it. - russelg000, on 06/09/2008, -5/+6"Obviously I'm referring to an alternate playout of the situation in which it would have been legal for me to have the gun. And even if not, I wouldn't be arrested until after I pulled out my gun and stopped the guy."
But in the U.S. a lot of people get killed by guns all the time, i'm going to go out on a limb and say that it's more than 7 a day. So what situation are you talking about? Let's say he had a gun but you had a gun also. Then take into account that it's a densely crowded area where you can hit other people. Real gun situations have serious drawbacks. - praisethelard, on 06/09/2008, -3/+10"It was in a crowded area of a large city in an already crowded nation."
Keywords here: crowded area. Lets say 3 people in that crowded area had guns on them and decided to play hero. Do you really think they would get a clear shot in all the chaos? They'd probably end up hurting more than the guy who initially started the rampage who, in this scenario, would most likely be carrying a gun as well. - masterm1nd, on 06/09/2008, -4/+4It's called common sense. You don't shoot unless you've got a good shot and you've shot a gun before. This would/should be required to walk around in public with a gun. A typical bullet looses lethal power after going through the first target. In the given situation, if I would have accidentally shot three people before shooting the murderer, and they all died, I still would have saved one innocent life. I can't even think of a situation I've been in recently where I wouldn't have had a perfect shot at anyone I wanted to if need be. And no I don't carry a gun
- masterm1nd, on 06/09/2008, -3/+3And when you factor all the people who were stabbed and didn't die it makes it an even clearer choice.
- winampman2, on 06/09/2008, -4/+4Its okay to accidentally shoot and kill 3 people if it means saving one life? So its okay if you or your mother are accidentally shot and killed by someone trying to be a hero? In a crowded shopping area?
In the US, the killer would have been allowed to carry a gun. He could have easily killed more than 5 or 6 people if he had a gun. Tokyo's Akihabara district is EXTREMELY crowded. - masterm1nd, on 06/09/2008, -1/+2Accidentally killing three is a worst case scenario. I already said I wouldn't have accidentally killed someone. I'm familiar with guns and think it would be incredibly difficult to kill one or especially more on accident, even in such a crowded area. As I could be the one accidentally being shot, I could also just as likely be the one getting saved. With my way, you would actually be statistically more likely to be alive than your way, considering my way there are less dead. It doesn't matter specifically who died, it's from two random sets of people anyway, so ultimately what matters is the number of peoples dead. So that is a moot point.
- russelg000, on 06/09/2008, -1/+3worst case scenario would be if they had little restrictions on guns and the guy got a hold of a few. So lets take that into account. This guys gets a machine gun and mows down a whole bunch of people. It would probably be more than 7. That's before someone else even reacts to it who, statistically has a gun and is willing to do something. So if guns were included into the situation, i see more dead people than less.
- Blandyman, on 06/09/2008, -0/+4I shot a guy's arm off once, because I felt like it. I didn't hit anyone else because it was in an open field.
Wait, *****. Nevermind. That was Bruce Willis in The Jackal :(
- twiztidsinz, on 06/08/2008, -15/+9Why?
- twiztidsinz, on 06/08/2008, -6/+3Actually they do have the right to bear arms or some form of that if I'm not mistaken... guns are not the only 'arms'.
- lordmetroid, on 06/08/2008, -2/+19Not since the Meiji reformation has arms been permitted to bear.
- twiztidsinz, on 06/08/2008, -2/+3Not an expert and I don't claim to be, but I'm pretty sure you can carry some weapons in Japan, which includes knives. I've heard they have strict limits on knives (must be under a certain length blade) but they do sell them.
- boombye, on 06/09/2008, -1/+4Actually it was during the Meiji reformation, that walking around with swords in public was banned. They wanted to modernize and didn't think people walking around with swords would help in that regard. You can still carry blades under a certain length.
- notoneofus, on 06/08/2008, -0/+13Strict limitations here on guns. Most of the guns in Japan (legally) are shotguns for hunting/skeet. The licensing process is extensive and very difficult. There are something like 30 legal pistols (for Olympic training, I think). There are illegal guns, of course, and converted guns (from airsoft mostly...a really bad idea if you don't want it to blow up on you).
So, yeah. Lots of regulation. This applies to many knives as well, under the gun and sword law.- masterm1nd, on 06/08/2008, -2/+6What type of bullets are they shooting from their airsoft guns? I'd take my chances with a zip gun before I'd shoot a modded airsoft.
- notoneofus, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1@masterm1nd: Not sure, as I've never seen one of the modded ones. I've had standard, well-made guns malfunction on me, and that's bad enough. This sounds like a truly horrible idea.
- willywong, on 06/09/2008, -4/+3He could have had a nuke.
- lordmetroid, on 06/08/2008, -2/+19Not since the Meiji reformation has arms been permitted to bear.
- germ5150, on 06/09/2008, -5/+22This is just another example that shows that if they want to go kill a bunch of people that they can do it without guns.
- fuzzmeister, on 06/09/2008, -3/+14I'd like to point out though that one man with a gun is a lot more dangerous than one man with a knife.
- FatLoser, on 06/09/2008, -2/+6Except if that one man with a knife is a ninja... this guy was Japanese... think on that.
- masterm1nd, on 06/09/2008, -1/+1True, that would make him more dangerous, but it would also give everyone else around him the capability of being equally dangerous. If everyone is equally dangerous, the bad guys odds get real bad after killing the first person... Factor that with the fact that in a country like the US, which currently has about 3 guns per person, not counting military stuff, that crazy guy is going to have a gun no matter what you make the law.
- kuzotz, on 06/09/2008, -0/+2it's about the same especially considering that it was in Tokyo. Trust me it's very very very ***** crowded. You wouldn't have known that people were getting stabbed at the time that it happened, and only realize it right after it occurred. Also that crazy guy in Japan could never get ahold of a gun because only the Yakuza have guns, and even they don't use guns to do crime (think of the Beppu murder where the yakuza member killed the mayor with a ***** katana!!)
- fuzzmeister, on 06/09/2008, -3/+14I'd like to point out though that one man with a gun is a lot more dangerous than one man with a knife.
- ZenMojo, on 06/09/2008, -3/+16That's why Japan's murder rate is so high...
...
Oh, nevermind. - ZenMojo, on 06/09/2008, -1/+6The two-ton truck he hit them with had nothing to do with the murders, no, it was clearly the knife that got them.
- Zippo, on 06/09/2008, -1/+6Yeah, because Japan's violent crime rate is so much higher than the US'!
Oh wait, it's considerably lower. - PrintScrn12, on 06/09/2008, -1/+4The guy was a gangster and he couldn't even get a gun then cause even more havoc. Their gun control must be fairly effective.
- kuzotz, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1Japan doesn't need guns. That ***** rarely happens because the Yakuza keeps crime under ***** control. That dude basically said I am sorry now punish me. That's Japan. Crazy people are everywhere. Geez.
- ausoff2, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1my only traditionally "conservative" view: You're right! Just because they banned guns doesnt mean it stops people from killing each other. same as here, how gun bans wont do anything, and how guns arent the only weapons on earth.
- publiclurker, on 06/08/2008, -26/+32That's why there were only 5
- Kythas, on 06/08/2008, -31/+140Look at the destruction a knife can have in the hands of the wrong person! Only police and military should be able to own and carry knives.
More knife legislation now!- chicofaraby, on 06/08/2008, -46/+22How many would be dead if had a 9mm with a couple of clips, dumbass?
- geobay, on 06/08/2008, -6/+22Please check your sarcasm detector, as it appears to be non-functional.
- HenvY, on 06/08/2008, -10/+6Are you so dense you cannot see that sarcasm was very clearly used to mock those who call for gun control? Chico makes the important point that the two do not make a relevant comparison. Guns are made for killing, knives are not.
- DeathRay2K, on 06/08/2008, -7/+3He was obviously responding to the sarcasm, not taking it literally..
- akkibaba, on 06/08/2008, -9/+27In that vein, how many would be dead if someone in the crowd had been carrying a 9mm when this nutjob started with the knifing?
- Lyph5, on 06/08/2008, -5/+15Two. The first person the guy knifed, and the guy himself.
- chicofaraby, on 06/08/2008, -21/+20Yeah, the solution to a gun in a crowd is two guns in a crowd.
***** gun nuts are insane.... - FiP0, on 06/08/2008, -12/+7Yeah, someone carrying a gun could have injured somebody else, trying to hit the madman.
- BlueSkyfish, on 06/08/2008, -3/+15"Witnesses said the rampage was stopped when a policeman armed with a gun confronted the man"
I'm going to have to guess 7 - KidTrinidad, on 06/08/2008, -7/+6yea but in comparison to the amount of shooting deaths that would happen if guns were legal, i'd say they made the right choice.
- FreeDerry, on 06/08/2008, -4/+11Yep and thats why you Americans have such low homicide rates.
- revvolutions, on 06/08/2008, -8/+7whoa. it seems pro-gun america arrived in this thread a few minutes earlier than the rest of us. They've been burying anyone who doesn't think handing out guns to everyone in japan is a good idea.
not to worry, we'll have you guys back to neutral diggs in no time. - praisethelard, on 06/08/2008, -3/+7Yeah, someone with a gun trying to shoot another who is committing assault in a crowd would surely have perfect aim. There would be no confusion or collateral damage.
- lordmetroid, on 06/08/2008, -1/+14You think Yakuza would have problems getting a fire arm? Don't be kidding me!
- opmike, on 06/08/2008, -2/+5"Clips" are of no use in modern handguns (or modern firearms in general for that matter). I think we would all be pretty safe unless he decided to throw it.
- geobay, on 06/08/2008, -6/+22Please check your sarcasm detector, as it appears to be non-functional.
- MalusMalo, on 06/08/2008, -7/+3documents are of no use against a concealed weapon especially in the hands of one with death on his/her mind.
- Weejay, on 06/08/2008, -11/+8I could kill people with my bare hands, should we legislate on hands as well? (PS: I'm just expanding on your well-put sarcasm here).
- Loonacy, on 06/09/2008, -0/+4I don't know about you, but they made me get a license for my hands. Hii-ya!
- tinfoilhatboy, on 06/08/2008, -6/+3the knife didnt kill these people, the person did. he could have used a teacup. would you call for a teacup ban too?
- chiefbandit2200, on 06/09/2008, -0/+2You're joking, right? i hope so...
- seraph582, on 06/08/2008, -10/+5yes gun control folks - your ideal of making guns illegal is completely ***** retarded for this reason. ***** you.
/truth- Ferago, on 06/09/2008, -1/+1Ya because the average person is perfectly capable of acting completely calm in a crisis, and only getting head shots on the bad guy. There would be no people pissing their pants and firing randomly in his direction from all sides.
- antonio97b, on 06/08/2008, -1/+20***** knives. Police need swords!
- redfox2600, on 06/09/2008, -5/+3Don't you mean a katana instead of swords and ninjas instead of police?
- Dotcommer, on 06/08/2008, -12/+2***** you kythas you pussy. I need my swiss army knife not because of the blade, but because there are other tools in there I need on a daily basis for fixing equipment, not to mention its extremely convenient. If I'm not allowed to carry that all because of you, I WILL stab you.
- duggdowncatisad, on 06/08/2008, -2/+13I agree, it's about time Japan passed common sense knife control legislation.
- Narrator, on 06/09/2008, -1/+10But how will we get the powerful chopped vegetable lobby to go along with our devious plan?
- MOJIRA, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1The Iron Chef will save us!
- jugglingjon, on 06/09/2008, -6/+6You're really missing the mark on this one. In my opinion, where a nation should draw the line on weapons, is where one person armed with that weapon can impose their will on a sizable group of people who don't have it. For example, I don't think people should be allowed to own automatic guns, because one nut with one can terrorize a crowd and there's really nothing they can do about it. The same can't be said about a baseball bat or despite this case, even a knife; a group of unarmed people could overwhelm the criminal in those cases. Revolvers and hunting rifles are somewhere in between in my opinion, I would say closer to the legal end, given that person pass a background check.
I think the real weapon here was the truck he used to plow into a crowd of people. If he didn't have access to that, then it seems pretty unlikely that he would have been able to stab 17, and kill 7 people; someone would have stopped him at some point. How the hell did he get his hands on that? What can you do to keep a maniac from using a vehicle as a weapon?- Laughsatyou, on 06/09/2008, -0/+2lucky for you automatic guns are already banned.
- str1fe, on 06/09/2008, -0/+7While we're at it, a well sharpened pencil can be just as deadly! Ban pencils!
- ByteGuerilla, on 06/09/2008, -1/+15Let's all point and laugh at all these people who failed to get Kythas' sarcasm.
- cnot3, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1Sadly, I bet many politicians would take it very seriously. Ban everything.
- maiku00, on 06/09/2008, -2/+3Im sure he would have used a gun and caused even more destruction if gun control wasn't as good as it is in Japan.
- mrevaaaaa, on 06/09/2008, -1/+3I commend your sarcastic comment. That is... if it's really sarcastic? It better be, for the sake of the internet.
- FatLoser, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1If you can't tell whether or not something is sarcasm, then you can't tell. And if you can't tell when it's blatant sarcasm, as in this case, then please refrain from commenting.

- mmeiser, on 06/09/2008, -3/+2I'm sure this has been said somewhere already, but if only people were allowed to carry guns someone would have quickly shot the guy.
- MuskokasFinest, on 06/09/2008, -1/+2Right, cause obviously you'd be able to hit your target on one of the busiest streets of Tokyo.
People should be thankful that this guy wasn't allowed to own a gun.
- MuskokasFinest, on 06/09/2008, -1/+2Right, cause obviously you'd be able to hit your target on one of the busiest streets of Tokyo.
- inurb, on 06/09/2008, -1/+1I wish I could digg you again.
- PrintScrn12, on 06/09/2008, -0/+3Actually there is knife control there. If you carry a big rambo knife you can have police questioning you. Though that kind of restriction is not really meant for one off psychos. It's might be more helpful against gangs and other troublemakers who carry such knifes regularly.
- richpav, on 06/09/2008, -1/+4If more guns makes a country safer, then the US should be #1 on the list of safest countries. As it stands I think it's #96 and Japan is around #5 or 6.
I live in Japan, and I'm glad there are practically no guns. I can walk *anywhere* in Tokyo at night and feel safe. The Yakuza has guns, but they pretty much keep to killing each other, because killing civilians would be bad for business.
- chicofaraby, on 06/08/2008, -46/+22How many would be dead if had a 9mm with a couple of clips, dumbass?
- ocharry, on 06/08/2008, -1/+36That is extremely sad. There's no one to blame here except for the deranged madman. You can't prevent someone just going off in random. It's pointless and disrespecting to the victims to spin this horrendous event into an off-tangent propaganda piece fit for a politician's diet. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families
- Protoss, on 06/08/2008, -1/+7Exactly. You could ban knives entirely, but if this guy was set on killing people, he would find another method.
- localhost6881, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1how would you cut your steak if all knifes were illegal ? a spork ?
- FatLoser, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1I'm pretty sure the article said this guy was Yakuza anyway... I'm sure they have ways to get their hands on things that aren't legal. Just a guess there.
- KyleGoetz, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1BBC said someone was saying he's yakuza. I've not seen Japanese articles saying so, but then I haven't been reading every article that pops up. Nonetheless, I've only seen one article alleging he's yakuza, and it was the beeb in only one article. And they may have removed that line later.

- AD35, on 06/08/2008, -1/+42It's up to 7 people confirmed dead and 17 people hit or stabbed.
Apparently here's also some news bits:
Jiji Press and Byōkan Sunday report that a message, titled "I will kill people in Akihabara," was posted on a mobile phone bulletin board about seven hours before the fatal hit-and-run incident and the stabbing incident in Akihabara. The message reportedly reads:
I Will Kill People in Akihabara
06/08 05:21
I will come barging in with a vehicle, and if I can't use the vehicle, I will use a knife. Farewell, everyone.

- m0tbaillie, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1No, I fully realize that there are 365 days in a year and 7 days in a week. I was making the point that although they don't LITERALLY work 24/7 365, the Japanese *do* often land jobs that have them working 100+ hours a week and are under immense stress all the time because of it.
- kuzotz, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1no they literally work 24/7 my friend works in Tokyo for an advertising firm, and tey frown on him when he leaves after a 8 hour workday.
No in Japan you work 12-18 hours, and you do this everyday. You don't get to know your wife or kids, and your wife hires a male escort to get some, and you hire a female hooker to get some. All in all you work, and when you get home you just want to vegetate. Which is why japanese tv is dumber than american tv. ALso this isn't going to change anytime soon.

The size of the moving blob of people walking, especially when crossing the street, is pretty insane in Akiba(though worse in other areas). It would be pretty hard for people to run away quickly. I always wondered what would happen if I pushed one person; would it be a domino effect? Anyways, tough luck, but Japan better get used to this more and more. The society is changing fast and the level of crime is going to go up. To be fair though, Japan was home to the worst terrorist chemical attack, by a group of domestic terrorists who were later found to have enough gas to kill 4 million people, strains of Ebola from africa, and various other fun chemicals and weapons.

I know this happened in Japan but for the USA.....with all the gun control and such in place.....how could such a standard be reached? (insert Mr. Spock Logic) "This is not logical, Captain Kirk". A person wielding a lowly KNIFE.....Could have been a baseball bat, coulda been a shard of metal cut out of an aluminum can on an airliner.....
I teach my 7 year old kid that INTENT is the mother of destruction, not the method. If a person wants to roll up on a crowd of elderly and choke them to death using kittens down their throats, that's as deadly as bringing a gun, relatively speaking.
Stupid is as stupid does. They oughta let us all carry weapons so this kind of ***** can be avoided! My Pocketknife wants liberation!- JointVenture, on 06/08/2008, -2/+1I'll take that challenge, meet me at the old folks home.

- squaredUP, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1They do let us carry weapons. What are you talking about? I for one carry one... It was pretty easy actually. I went to the store, bought a pistol. Got a conceal carry permit and BAM! Now I carry one with me that is perfectly legal. I don't see the problem?
Now if someone comes around trying to choke me with kittens... well, lets just say that would be the last mistake they would make.

- kuzotz, on 06/09/2008, -0/+2violence almost never happens in Japan unless it's Yakuza related. Japan is the safest place in the world. Which is why this stabbing is international news worthy. - ertw1, on 06/08/2008, -0/+4I get deeply saddened when I read a news story like this, it reminds me very much of a school shooting that happened in my city a few years ago. I simply cannot understand how someone could harm or kill a perfect stranger. Every soldier (or "Yakuza" member) knows the stakes...but these people did nothing to deserve this, it gives me chills. This murderer cannot be forgiven simply because he wasn't "hugged enough" as a child.
- VooDooBrAnMaN, on 06/09/2008, -1/+1The murderer does not deserve to be forgiven, but you need to remember that something has to have clicked in his mind to make him want to do this.

Good thing Japan have a ban on gun, if the murder have access to guns, the number can easily reach over 20 to 30.- fakekevinrose, on 06/09/2008, -4/+5I'm pretty sure, if he wanted a gun, he could get one.
- MuskokasFinest, on 06/09/2008, -3/+5In a country that has banned guns for a long period of time, it's actually quite difficult and extremely expensive to obtain a gun.
- Orchid64, on 06/09/2008, -0/+3Guns aren't banned in Japan. You can get hunting rifles in Japan. Look it up before asserting something and making an ass of yourself.
Most Japanese people don't bother to get guns, but they are not banned. Also, the guy hit people with his truck first and foremost. I think that, had he wanted to, he could have plowed over a lot more people if he wanted to kill more. I think he was really just out of his head. He wasn't looking for volume, he was just looking to inflict suffering and pain. - sndream, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1By gun ban, I am actually referring to hand gun ban. No one is concerning about gangster/nutcase using a rifle to kill people in public at broad daylight.
Even if he want to get a rifle, it will still take forever for the process to approve and I am not sure will they approve it for a guy that seem to know nothing about hunting.

- Sroek, on 06/08/2008, -7/+11Why didn't he use a Katana?
- Zephik, on 06/09/2008, -3/+1Because shorter weapons (such as a large knife) can cause more damage in less time than a longer weapon (such as a katana) can when dealing with multiple targets.
I could blame that piece of knowledge on video games, but in all honesty, thats pretty common sense really.- Sroek, on 06/09/2008, -1/+2Sorry, but I don't understand your logic at all.
A Katana is way ahead of a typical knife in terms of lethality. If I wanted to inflict as much damage as possible to as many targets as possible in a high-density area, I'm going with a well-made Katana. It has a higher chance of causing fatal results upon each strike.
Moreover, you don't have to be as close in proximity as a knife so you can move on to your next target after one cut, pierce or slash. One slash can even inflict multiple targets. With a knife, you have to spend a considerable amount of time closing in on your target and stabbing a number of times in order to insure fatality before seeking your next target.
I can see why you thought the way you did though, since in video games, a Katana in comparison to a knife would have to be balanced with a lower rate of a fire, increased weight and slow attack speed, but that's not how it is in real life.- Zephik, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1I see your point.
You can still stab faster with a knife than you can with a katana though. :P
- Zephik, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1I see your point.
- Sroek, on 06/09/2008, -1/+2Sorry, but I don't understand your logic at all.
- ausoff2, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1I was wondering that myself. Ban guns and you force japanese people (who are notorious with blades anyway) to find other ways to kill.
- bosssmiley, on 06/09/2008, -1/+2Because now gaijin weeaboos know about them katana aren't cool any more.
- Zephik, on 06/09/2008, -3/+1Because shorter weapons (such as a large knife) can cause more damage in less time than a longer weapon (such as a katana) can when dealing with multiple targets.
- Nohj, on 06/08/2008, -9/+1I may just be a dick, but did anyone else think this was going to be an article from The Onion before they looked at it?
- fakekevinrose, on 06/09/2008, -0/+3No.
- Dbeneath, on 06/08/2008, -4/+28Another story on digg about easterners being killed and another thread of videogame references and clever quips. and if somebody would have made a GTA reference the day of Virginia tech they would have been buried and reported 1000 times. ***** you guys, my heart goes out to these people and their families and i hope that the sick ***** who did this gets what is coming to him.
- waydee, on 06/09/2008, -0/+3Agreed, probably a new personal record set here for mass blocking of users.
- PEMDAS, on 06/09/2008, -3/+1I agree that this is a terrible act, and feel strong sympathy for anyone who comes under attack in random acts of violence. But if you expect decency, or a united sense of compassion from anonymous people online, you're delusional. As most attempts at imposing morality online go, your heavy-handed morality lessons will likely only be affirmed by people who already agree with you, and ignored by anyone else who assumes you can't take a joke.
Sorry to take a stab at you, I'll cut it out and cleave you alone. I need to split, chop chop, but I'll catch you later, home slice. - topace3000, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1People make such comments in every violent story, I don't know what digg you've been viewing.
- bosssmiley, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1Dugg for a smack in the face we needed.
*regrets previous gag comments* - Wwhat, on 06/09/2008, -0/+0He drove into people then attacked them, that's a bit very reminiscent of GTA though isn't it? Can't blame people for noticing that, be honest.
- FiP0, on 06/08/2008, -7/+7If only those people had knifes to defend themselves.
- Zippo, on 06/09/2008, -1/+2When was the last time you were in a knife fight. You don't parry with a knife, you just both get stabbed.
- FiP0, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1I guess you didn't get it.

- richardpryor, on 06/08/2008, -20/+0It's ok because Japanese reproduce like crazy.
one dies and twenty are born- phauna, on 06/08/2008, -1/+7Japan actually has a severely declining birth rate.
- fakekevinrose, on 06/09/2008, -0/+2Japan currently has one of the lowest birth rates in the world. Buried for sounding like an idiot

- namuh, on 06/08/2008, -8/+1Oh no not a whole 5 people. (Yes its still sad) but it pales in comparison to the daily terrible tragedy of thousands of people who die from starvation, poverty and war. Now that my friends, is a sickening number of dead people.(look it up) Hmm no story on digg about how disgusting that number of dead is? Hmm why not? Okay, talk amongst yourselves. Ready? Go!
- Ferago, on 06/09/2008, -0/+2It's not a contest to see which tragedy is the worst, you prick.
- ausoff2, on 06/09/2008, -0/+2first of all, what Ferago said, you're a douche for basically calling this a weak massacre...that we should get a real massacre in the news.
Second, there probably HAVE been a million stories on digg about that anyway. The more you post those insane numbers, the less people care about the people in the war. Better to report on how many people hate it btw i do Not support this war in iraq dont you diggers worry.
- JointVenture, on 06/08/2008, -12/+5Used panty bandages for the win.
- rjseals, on 06/08/2008, -8/+3Ban knives! If he wouldn't have had access to knives this would have never happened.
- ausoff2, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1LOL you must be being sarcastic. Ban guns he uses a knife ban knives he uses a hello kitty pillow.
- highlyhigh, on 06/08/2008, -12/+0ive been to akihabara. they close down the roads on weekends so people can walk on the whole street.... a car would've been much more fun. *goes back to playing GTA
- BlueSkyfish, on 06/08/2008, -10/+9How did this story turn into American gun control?
- Barackalypse, on 06/09/2008, -1/+2Because it illustrates the folly of thinking you can make people safe by merely banning possession of guns (or any other implement that can cause injury). This proves quite conclusively you can have a murder spree without a firearm.
- bosssmiley, on 06/09/2008, -1/+2So the answer is obviously...more and deadlier weapons? BANG! ¬---0_o
- reyalp, on 06/09/2008, -0/+2an armed society is a polite society.

- miketh01, on 06/08/2008, -7/+0terrible tragedy.. however, i think that everyone in japan will be happy as long as the news coverage doesn't pre-empt the latest edition of Yatta!
- tinfoilhatboy, on 06/08/2008, -2/+5it was not the knife that killed these people; the was the japanese kid. furthermore, you can easily make a weapon out of anything, like chopsticks.
- KaJuN4, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1Agreed. Alcohol and cars aren't blamed for drunk driving deaths, drunk drivers are. So why can't we treat weapons the same way?
- KyleGoetz, on 06/09/2008, -0/+2This is Digg, every story becomes anti-American at some point. And then that becomes anti-European after that.
- phauna, on 06/08/2008, -1/+13He wasn't a Yakuza, he just said he was at first. He's now admitted he was a lone crazy person, who was 'tired of life'.
- willywong, on 06/09/2008, -0/+3But life is what he'll get.... IN PRISION!!!! *cue dramatic trumpets*
- russelg000, on 06/09/2008, -0/+0they have the death penalty right?
- Syugo, on 06/09/2008, -2/+1Nope.
- tuffguy, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1Syugo, did you read the whole article? Here, I'll help you out a little bit with resselg's question...
The rampage came on the seventh anniversary of a massacre at a Japanese primary school, when a knife-wielding janitor and former mental patient killed eight schoolchildren. He was later executed for the killings.
emphasis on executed. he was hanged in 04.
- tuffguy, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1Syugo, did you read the whole article? Here, I'll help you out a little bit with resselg's question...
- Syugo, on 06/09/2008, -2/+1Nope.
- drewbe121212, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1Yes -- They recently executed two people who went on a school slashing spree and killed several young children.
- Zippo, on 06/09/2008, -1/+1Most Yakuza are actually considerably mild-mannered. Like most mafia members, they actually lead a good life (albeit barely legal).
- tinfoilhatboy, on 06/08/2008, -3/+1it was not the knife that killed these people; it was the japanese kid. furthermore, you can easily make a weapon out of anything, like chop sticks, noodles, godzilla toy
