- postitnote, on 02/19/2008, -10/+125His boss made him wear a tie.
- positron, on 02/19/2008, -4/+65Seriously. If I ever had a boss who tried putting a noose around my neck you can bet there'd be a noticeable deficit of teeth in his family photo Christmas cards that year.
- Phrag, on 02/19/2008, -3/+43What part do you think is a hoax? The incident with the noose was confirmed to be real by "Pippa Isbell, vice president of corporate communications for Orient-Express Hotels, which owns Charleston Place, confirmed that the supervisor was fired 'as a direct result of the incident with the noose.'" If they fired this guy for another reason, why not specify what it was he did and provide proof so that his claims are shown to be false?
- inactive, on 02/19/2008, -37/+76That sounds even less likely than the last twenty race hoaxes...
- meruru, on 02/19/2008, -3/+33Something like this goes beyond race. It does';t matter what color the people involved are, putting a noose around someones neck is never appropriate
- sonnybobiche, on 02/19/2008, -5/+30"Boone Hall Plantation offers guided tours of what life was like in the 1800s and is the site of wedding receptions and other events."
See? He was just trying to be historically accurate... - inactive, on 02/19/2008, -3/+27He is only doing this becuz it's non-white history month.
- blackinthmiddle, on 02/19/2008, -1/+24Stupiddumb is being nasty about it, but what he's saying is that there's simply no need for you to apologize because *one* racist white person decided to do something incredibly dumb to one black person. As a black man, I don't expect a white person to apologize to me every time "one of my people" are slighted by "one of your people". If we did that, we'd be walking around apologizing to each other all day long.
- raze888, on 02/19/2008, -5/+24So you think it's more likely the guy made up a story about having a noose put around his neck, complaining about it, to the point where he got fired from his job of ten years, than a racist prick of a boss putting a noose around an old black guy's neck at a plantation?
Do you happen to be a supervisor at that hotel? - whatthefu, on 02/19/2008, -5/+23Even if two friends found it funny between each other, what kind of ***** idiot would think that was at all appropriate for work?
- Dewhead, on 02/19/2008, -6/+24frnnkdlxx,
you realize that our lovely government practically forced lenders to take subprime loans. Lenders don't look at color--they look at credit scores and ability to repay the loan. Yes, all people who do not pay their mortgage will be forced to leave their homes. People who signed a mortgage signed a legal contract and if they are too stupid to understand that they have to honor their part of the contract then they should lose their homes. Lenders are not evil because they require that people repay their loans. That's the deal. - inactive, on 02/19/2008, -16/+32Yay for apologizing to an entire race for what happened to one man! You, my friend, are the racist one here.
- aliengoods, on 02/19/2008, -2/+17And nobody would blame you either. You could probably kick his ass AND sue him for emotional distress.
- helmsb, on 02/19/2008, -12/+27The boss just needs to apologize to Jesse Jackson and it will be all over.
- dudefather, on 02/19/2008, -2/+16somethings wrong, I can only click the thumbs up button once....
- pintomp3, on 02/19/2008, -1/+15thanks kramer
- neio, on 02/19/2008, -6/+19The guy who put the noose around his neck probably had to dress like a racist cotton farm owner, what about his feeling huh?
- withoutfunk, on 02/19/2008, -2/+15Sounds like something Michael Scott would do to Stanley
- okcomputer1982, on 02/19/2008, -13/+26Number 1: Slavery was legal less then 150 years ago. That is about 2 lifetimes. That is not that long. My grandma's grandam was a slave (a literal piece of cattle) That ***** doesn't go away that easy and just because you do not experience or understand it does not make it paranoia. It is just an experience you do not understand and can only understand by listening humbly and learning.
Number 2: Built into the laws of the united states have been measure that specifically target Americans of African descent (particularly the descendants of slaves) up into today.
Number 3: It is not "black" people's responsibility to "get over" slavery. This was an atrocity (like the holocaust, the slaughtering of native americans, the armenia genocide and apartheid) that was done to them by those with power. Like it or not, the legacy of racism is a problem of "white" amerca, no amount of ignoring history will change that.
Number 4: Racism and it's results is not a race issue...it is a human rights issue. The intimidation and generational effects are based in racial stereotypes, but at least on paper, these are the problems of american citizens and should be treated as such. Making empathy for citizens contingent on arbitrary physical characteristics is the first step to justified genocide.
***** - Khendroc, on 02/19/2008, -11/+23You ***** are the proof that racism is alive and well today. These people don't have a ***** culture because of what you southern dandies did to them. And then when someone throws a ***** NOOSE around a black man's neck on one of the OLDEST PLANTATIONS in the country, you say he's just paranoid and overreacting? Get the ***** out of my country.
- inactive, on 02/19/2008, -3/+15You'd sneak up to a Black person and slip a noose around their neck? Really?
Maybe you should do a little research on lyching to find out why Black people feel so strongly about it.....
http://www.law.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/s ...
From 1888 - 1968, 1,297 Whites were lynched while 3,445 Blacks were. Lynching was a favorite method of the KKK. So if I was your co-worker and you were dumb enough to roll up on me with a noose, I'd claim I thought you were for real and wipe your inbred ass off the face of the earth.
Then I'd piss on your grave..... Bug f'n deal. - pintomp3, on 02/19/2008, -4/+15who wants to have their wedding on a plantation? what next? wedding getaways at auschwitz?
- pintomp3, on 02/19/2008, -5/+16perhaps you are not familiar with the history of lynching in america:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynching#United_State ...
it would be like stuffing a jewish person in the oven and saying "it's just a joke, what does his religion have anything to do with it?" - FadieZ, on 02/19/2008, -1/+12So you'd Photoshop them?
- alw111, on 02/19/2008, -2/+12It's pathetic that people in this country don't even know recent history. You say 2008 like we're in some future world where all the problems of the past have disappeared. It wasn't that long ago that the noose was used regularly to hang black people in large numbers. My parents were the first to integrate their high schools and they had to deal with all kinds of racism. Hell, I'm 26 and I was the first to integrate my elementary school. I can remember being jumped by nearly all of the kids in my grade for trying to play soccer with them while the teachers looked on and snickered. Only two of the kids had the moral fortitude to help me. I can also remember being told that I had a beautiful voice, but could not sing with the school at a concert because I did not represent them. I was then advised to go join the boys choir. Then there were the constant references to how dumb I was, until they figured out I had the highest standard testing scores. Then it switched to how intelligent people were inherently evil. Then of course there was the ***** this ***** that. Maybe there isn't any racism where your from, highly unlikely, but there is in Texas and the south in general.
- Barbosa, on 02/19/2008, -1/+11Blacks don't have a hundred years long history of terrorist lynchings and colonial oppression against Whites to give meaning to the act of putting a noose on someone today. get your head out of your ass and stop feeling sorry for yourself, White male hegemony is not yet under any discernible threat, sounding that alarm now only makes you look sillier than you probably are.
- sockpuppets, on 02/19/2008, -2/+11Compulsive Noose Syndrome?
- threemagic, on 02/19/2008, -1/+10Thanks for bringing no point to the conversation.
- DurtyJ, on 02/19/2008, -8/+17That is the most ridiculous statement I've read. It's almost as if you thought you were going to be funny, and then failed miserably.
- blackinthmiddle, on 02/19/2008, -1/+9Well considering that the hotel did an investigation and fired his boss speaks volumes.
- Stereotype77, on 02/19/2008, -3/+11Wow.
You = Jackass.
A black man getting a noose tied around their neck has EVERY ***** RIGHT to complain about it. It's not paranoia you *****, it's outright disrespect. If you can't understand that then I truly pity you, for you have no hope.... - cerejota, on 02/19/2008, -2/+10Thats about it. Spot on.
- alw111, on 02/19/2008, -0/+8"standardized testing"
Forgot to mention that I was teased with a noose several time. You people are unrealistic. - inactive, on 02/19/2008, -7/+15Quit acting like a victim, it's pathetic. Blacks weren't anymore victimized than whites in the mortgage crisis. They were both equally stupid enough to buy something they can't afford and pay too much for it at the same time.
When simple common sense can tell you are wrong to do something and you do it anyways, you haven't been victimized, you're just plain dumb. - inactive, on 02/19/2008, -5/+13No, you're wrong. If you had read the article you would have seen the part where the guy said he had a recording, idiot. But I'm sure you'll dugg way the hell up by all the other illiterates.
- inactive, on 02/19/2008, -9/+17Pics or it didn't happen.
- CrazedLeper, on 02/19/2008, -2/+10White people don't *want* the notion of racism spoiling their party. Most of them work hard for what they have so they don't *want* to believe that their success did not result from their effort. Not *wanting* to believe, however, has nothing to do with the truth. The fact is, racists have changed methods thus creating the plausible deniability necessary to prevent a schism between racist whites and non-racist whites.
Every politician knows what happens to his career if he slips up in public (remember "Maccaca"?) so they deny it in public and, instead create policies that just *happen* to adversely affect the people they've been secretly hating all along. Here's a small part of how the scheme works: watch TV very carefully. *Try* to count how many times you see a black woman's posterior (except in association with the word "fat").
Only when you look for it do you realize that someone is preventing you from seeing it. Don't speculate about why; you won't *want* to conclude that the answer is racism and *why* is not the main question with which you want to be concerned, right now. The main question is "how long has this been done on a national scale and I didn't notice?" - RNEMESiS42, on 02/19/2008, -5/+12Are you serious? You're being sarcastic, right? Seriously, RIGHT?
- Barbosa, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7Swastikas, ovens and gas chambers were not invented by Nazi Germany either, but those things will always symbolize and be tied to the Nazis because of the atrocities they committed.
- ovset, on 02/19/2008, -2/+9Joke or not, my first response to someone sneaking a noose around my neck (and TIGHTEN it) would be to spin around and tackle him.
- talonstriker, on 02/19/2008, -4/+11RTFA
- badjokes, on 02/19/2008, -3/+10i wonder how someone that randomly puts a noose around someone else's neck would go about explaining themselves to the police.
- inactive, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7BTW by whining and using obnoxious phrases like "you do not understand and can only understand by listening humbly and learning" you alienate the people you are trying to convince. They see you as patronizing, condescending and arrogant.
I am not a racist I simply don't care about race either way. - forgetfulca, on 02/19/2008, -2/+9That's because it isn't a symmetrical situation. There hasn't ever been a time on this continent when the dominant, slaver blacks routinely hunted down and hanged whites. The victim gets to demonstrate why this is a bad thing all they want. If you envy them this 'power', you can certainly move somewhere where you can be the unimpowered minority. I doubt you envy them that much though.
I don't know whether the 'boss' mentioned here had racist reasons for doing it, but for NOT thinking twice he was at the very least insensitive (and stupid) besides being guilty of assault in fact. - raze888, on 02/19/2008, -2/+9Well, he didn't choose to do it to a White, Asian, or Hispanic man. There is a little bit of history involved with this kind of thing, you should try looking it up.
- Stereotype77, on 02/19/2008, -1/+7Anybody who is disrespected in anyway has 'every ***** right' to complain. Race related, gender related, religion related, or misc related. Whatever, it doesn't matter. So to answer your question: Yes.
- threemagic, on 02/19/2008, -2/+8If a black man put a noose on the guy BECAUSE he was white, then sure it's racist...but there is no symbolism involved.
You can't draw a swastika on a jewish person for fun without the symbolism of something horrible coming up. - yfguitarist, on 02/19/2008, -8/+14The boss did it for the lulz
- Dysarthria, on 02/19/2008, -4/+10You really don't know what you're talking about. The people losing their ass are investors (the American public), not the people who got these loans. Just follow the true example below.
A sub-prime buyer could have taken a $300K loan out in 2001 for a 250K home (they were often loaning out more money than the cost of the home); a few years later the borrower could take out another 250K in a home equity loan after it appreciated in the inflated market to 550K. As soon as the value dropped on their home - they could default and let the bank take it back. At the cost of having a bad credit score, an astute sub-prime (or even prime ) buyer could have made off with hundreds of thousands of dollars legally. The bank is stuck with a home worth $250K or and a loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Please, post a story from a legitimate news source describing how whitey forced blacks from the 'hood to move into homes worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. - okcomputer1982, on 02/19/2008, -3/+9You are an ignorant idiot. Go read a ***** book.
