- inactive, on 11/30/2007, -1/+27There weren't any major Gulf coast hurricanes this year, so the industry wasn't able to jack up prices.
Thank god for them this happened. Otherwise they might not have record profits again this year. - EmperorAnton, on 11/30/2007, -2/+28sounds like a good excuse for the oil companies to increase the price.

Pipeline is already back up. (Blame the digg consensus process for delaying the news.)
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12400801 - phoobahr, on 11/30/2007, -2/+16We've got the oil, to water, the uranium, the food. We own your sorry asses and we're not off wasting capital fighting wars that could be better spent avoiding the imminent collapse. Enjoy your cockroach sandwich.
- beasty_dave_Mk2, on 11/30/2007, -0/+8or we can burn their damn white house down...again. *chortle*
- phoobahr, on 11/30/2007, -1/+9Sure, you could try. Given a few things:
1)You can still afford to, or have any troops available to do so.
2)You're prepared to take over the entire world. Running over 3rd world countries is one thing but no one will trade with if if you tried the same thing with a G7 nation.
3)You can find us on the map and don't arrive in snow shoes. It's damned hard to run in those things.
So, uhhh, no you can't really make it happen. 3 or 4 generations ago maybe but today no nation could afford to to try to stand on their own in such a way. We, on the other hand, don't need to trade with you as much as you need to trade with us. Given a poli/econ siege I know who wins. - MacSuxWindozSux, on 11/30/2007, -0/+8Do a Google on Alberta Oil. Canada is one of the many countries claiming to have the "Second largest oil reserve."
Alaska has nothing to do with this, but to your credit, is also a major source of oil. - Shigatsu, on 11/30/2007, -4/+10Enter, Fox news:

The only war Canada ever fought against the US, Canada won.
What you said is true as well. - jmpeagle, on 11/30/2007, -1/+6they don't set the prices, CBOT and NYMEX do. Almost all of our oil and gasoline is sold months before it reaches market...only the independent retailers pay the spot price.
- jmpeagle, on 11/30/2007, -0/+5Enbridge's market capitilization fell by 300+ million today because of this, I doubt they enjoy seeing the higher prices going to their competitors.
- ModemGhost, on 11/30/2007, -1/+6Two workers from my area were killed in this pipeline explosion. But gas might get a couple of pennies more expensive, so what makes the headline?
- IEatHamburgers, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4I don't think America would mind at this point.
- holzp, on 11/30/2007, -8/+12Canada? Are we talking about crude maple syrup here?
I knew we consumed a lot, but a direct pipeline? - rmetzger, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4Hides back in his igloo.
- F1R3DUP, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4umm, since when do they need an excuse?
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 11/30/2007, -1/+5When they teach American history they don't mention that the whitehouse was burnt down.
- Zippo, on 11/30/2007, -0/+3Whomever sets the prices, you can be sure they make a profit - one way or the other - off higher gas prices, and will use any excuse they can to raise said price.
- sophia269, on 11/30/2007, -0/+3$5/gallon gas here we come!
- neoform, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2Yup, the oils flowing again, we can all forget about the 2 people killed in the explosion.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2Enbridge is not a Canadian company.
- CiXeL, on 11/30/2007, -1/+3***** how much money is being made
this is about survival of the country.
the moral fiber of the country is gone when people put money above human life.
i know there are a bunch of greedy investors ready to dig me down. - craftyshrew, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2This pipeline is responsible for supplying the US with one fifth of all it's oil imports. You don't get most of your oil from the middle east, it's pumped down from my back yard.
- nesibus, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2Oil was at $95...dropped to $90...and then the pipe line fire magically happened and it shot right back up..

- inactive, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1From CNN Buisness
"The fire along the oil conduit from Canada to the Midwest caused a spike above $95 a barrel Thursday - and renewed speculation that oil was as back on its way to $100. But by the end of New York floor trading it was clear most of the network was quickly returned to service and that the fire-damaged section was expected to be back up in days."
So typical investor speculative scrambling, make the quick buck. Someday these clowns are going to get their asses handed to them. - dwiezel, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1These coincidental issues and problems in the oil/gas production industry are looking like a real conspiracy... Seriously. WTF!!!
- bjornski, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1What do you want to do, regulate it?
Ron wouldn't like that. - bugsy187, on 11/30/2007, -1/+2How fortunate they end up making record profit higher than anything outside of government in history.
- megarobotguy, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1So will this impact the pricing a month or so from now?
- troycott, on 11/30/2007, -1/+2didn't this happen a couple days ago?

Is this the same pipeline that is running through central MN and to the twin cities? I'm from St. Cloud and work by where they are storing all the pipe for the new oil pipeline.
- dupswapdrop, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1opps some oil big wig just stubbed his toe price of oil to raise to $200 a barrel!
- bjornski, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1The only way that would happen is if the US weans itself from oil.
And that's not happening. - boflaade, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1Yes, isn't it!
- troycott, on 11/30/2007, -1/+2Nobody is taking over anyobdy else. There soon will be no border between the two more substantial then state / provincial borders. The North American Union will form, the Amero will be the currency, and a joint task force comprised of American and Canadian forces will represent the military of the NA Union.
- xanjamanuo, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!
- MyHandle, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1They keep spouting that oil is marketed globally, so the citizens of a country like Canada that has an over-supply have to pay the same for gasoline as a country with a severe shortage, such as the US (taxes making the real difference). What I have a real f*cking problem with (in this situation as well as almost every other) is this: you have a pipeline issue, or a drill rig in the gulf goes down for maintenance, or ... whatever. In every case you are talking about a micro-portion of the world's oil supply being affected, yet they jack the global prices up by as much as 5-10% overnight. No, of course they aren't creating falsely inflated prices so they can gouge and rape the masses, no, of course not. ***** right-wing f*cks need to shut the f*ck up about government regulation. The only reason we are not all being completely pillaged of our measily incomes by greedy corporate bastards in every area of the economy is government regulation. Yes, regulation reduces efficiency and makes any product more expensive than it theoretically should be. The problem is the prices would not be at that theoretical low, rather unbelievably high, if corporations were given a free rein. Disgusting as that is, it has been proven true in EVERY case where corporate oversight was taken away.
Boys and girls, in case you do not know this, it is illegal for a corporation to NOT rape the public for profit at every opportunity. The only laws that apply to a corporation are those demanding reasonable expectation of greater gain than the cost of investment. If corporate officers decided to not take advantage of a situation where profit is expected to be greater than cost (taking into account public oppinion as a cost - if they are into retail - and ignoring the legality of the issue aside from the expected fines involved) then they are open to employment termination and possible legal issues. No crime is degenerate enough to not be considered simply as a cost-benefit analysis - other than accounting crimes, because those directly increase the risk faced by big-money investors. - Burrich, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1This is pretty local to me, about 70 miles away, so I'm getting good TV coverage of it. It seems that there was a crew of 19 people repairing a stretch of pipeline where a pin-size hole was found last week. They 'sleeved' it for a short-term fix, but came back to make a long term fix on it. When they were done and turned back on the pipeline an explosion happened. Everyone at the scene when they turned it back on were in trucks so they believe the vehicles started the fire.
The two men killed were contractors from Superior, WI.
Here's a link to a local story: http://www.in-forum.com/News/articles/184786 - teesix, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1yer frickin retarded.
- DJPRIME90, on 11/30/2007, -1/+2Woohoo...we made the americans pay more for their gas...
- xanjamanuo, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1GOD DAMN IT!!!!! Something ALWAYS happens. I hate gas. :(
- ipodman715, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1Get teh terrorists!
- boflaade, on 11/30/2007, -0/+0And just where did you get 80% ? The American market use to be lucrative, but Canada sells a lot more then what Americans buy. Sulphur and coal, nickel and other ores that are rare throughout the world are not sold exclusively to the United States. Good old water is a commodity and even though Americans buy a lot of forest products from Canada, they are not exclusive.
- inactive, on 11/30/2007, -1/+1What difference would it have made if you heard the news earlier? Would you have put your boots on and walk in 24 inches of snow to go fix the pipeline yourself? Shut up!
- ChildeRoland420, on 11/30/2007, -1/+1Wow, have you actually taken a history class in America? That's quite a bold generalization, I know that I learned about it in history.
