dailytelegraph.com.au — A high school pupil shot dead eight people in Tuusula, southern Finland, then shot and wounded himself, hours after a warning video was posted on Youtube. The video has been removed from Youtube, but here are the screen captures from the warning video posted by Sturmgeist89

Unless you hit the brain stem, major arteries or other very sensitive area, a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head isn't the quickest way out. I've read stories from police officers that describe suicide attempts that they've witnessed, individuals shooting themselves in the head, being shocked that they aren't dead, and then screaming and writhing in pain, vomiting, etc. Some ultimately die after several hours of this, others live.

What I do think is going on is the media over represents these stories, and people perceive an increase when there might not be one. That is NOT saying that this wasn't deplorable or should NOT have happened, but when people become deluded about the frequency of an event, we have a moral panic on our hands. It draws attention away from the issues that are way more prevalent and concerning to society (ex. murders in general).

Violent incidents are lower in Finland because Finland is awesome and they actually think violence is a bad thing there. Everybody owns guns there for hunting, not to protect their schools. Furthermore, leave it to do progun folks to try to capitalize on tragedy. My condolences go out to Suomi, the greatest country on earth!

Only guards and the like are allowed to carry guns in public, otherwise they can only be carried from place of storage to place of use (home->shooting range etc). It's also necessary to provice a reason when applying for a gun permit, and self-defence is not considered a valid reason.

      A vast majority of fire arms in Finland are hunting weapons, or WW2-era personal war booty. Out of all the countries in WW2 wWe had the highest percentage of the population mobilized back then, and almost everyone brought a Russian gun or two home, most of which survive as family heirlooms or in grandpa's attic.
