There is no excuse (outside of the very marginal few who actually have a medical condition... claiming fat gene doesn't count) for the current obesity issue in North America (yes us Canadians are getting fat too!).

- AiR1890, on 11/11/2009, -1/+38I think one of the biggest reasons that Americans have a much higher obesity rate is we drive much more than other countries, other people in other countries consume just as much fat as we do, they eat the same unhealthy fast food, and have all the technologies we do, the difference, they just walk a lot more than us. We need to make things in America more walk friendly, I see sidewalks everywhere around my area, but there is usually no one walking on these side walks, maybe one person, that is it, and if you live in America, seeing someone walk on the sidewalk is really weird, right by you is a million cars just driving by, and you are walking, people stare, and think, "why is that guy walking?, doesn't he have a car?"

- sinurgy, on 11/11/2009, -0/+29If you don't have much muscle mass (i.e. you've never spent any serious time building muscle currently or in the not too distant past) then BMI can be useful. However anyone who has done a decent amount of weight training in their time (no I don't mean 20 years ago in high school), BMI is not a good scale to use. They need to just drop the whole silly BMI thing period and use body fat % instead. That works for everyone.
