- luckynth, on 07/17/2009, -3/+37Good lord, yes. Horrible. Enjoy life while you can, people. You never know where it's going to come from.
- unknamed, on 07/18/2009, -2/+34Just ... wow.
Every time I hear a story like this it reminds me of a talk I had with a guy I know who is a Vietnam vet (3 tours) and is now a fire chief. We were talking about his investigation of a wildfire that killed three young firefighters. They were part of one of those fire crews that is made up of college kids looking to make some extra cash during the summer and weren't really supposed to be put in any bad spots.
Unfortunately they got trapped by a fire due to a freak wind change and the whole crew took shelter in a small ditch beside a road as the wildfire rushed down the hill. The three that died just happened to be in a spot where the fire, for lack of a better word, "funneled" through and it killed them.
He wondered aloud why it was those three but immediately answered his own question with an answer that, while simple, means a lot from a guy who's seen much more than his fair share of death: "When it's your time, it's your time.... and there's no getting around it."
I feel very sorry for the husband. - crsh1976, on 07/17/2009, -1/+31I live just a couple of blocks from there; what a freaky and horrible way to die.
- bicyclethief, on 07/18/2009, -1/+29manhole death, here you come
- unixfg, on 07/18/2009, -1/+26That'd be an odd thing for her husband of 2 years to do
- slowmode, on 07/18/2009, -2/+20I've eaten there plenty of times and probally sat right beside that seat. Just very sad how someones life and end just like that. Especially on their birthday
- immatellyouwhat, on 07/18/2009, -4/+21Didn't even get to be 33 for a whole day, that's ***** up.
- unangst, on 07/18/2009, -1/+18FTA: "Her body was left at the table where she died until a little after 9 p.m." - !@#%*
- socivitus, on 07/17/2009, -2/+16I'm periodically going to look up from now on.
- Roobix, on 07/18/2009, -1/+14What an awful thing to happen. My sympathies.
What else is there to say about an article like this? There is no need to try to be witty.
:( - zuiquan, on 07/18/2009, -6/+17OK, I'll say what everyone else is thinking: These comments ***** suck!
- afredus, on 07/18/2009, -0/+11Somebody is at fault. Concrete slabs should never fall off a building.
- Chris_F, on 07/18/2009, -0/+10Not to mention nobody really wants to hear something like that. If your family was killed in an accident and while you were grieving their tragic loss, someone came up to you and said in a cocky manner "God works in mysterious ways." I'd be surprised if you didn't throw a right hook directly into their jaw.
- Javali, on 07/18/2009, -0/+9I hated how disturbingly graphic this news article was written. It is almost like the person who wrote it is enjoying the horror story. At the end it reads: "Where you there? Do you have pictures of the incident?" RIP
- martoq, on 07/18/2009, -1/+9Very sad story. Why doesn't ***** like this happen to the scumbag crack dealer who was out with his crackwhore babby's mamma? No it has to happen to a loving couple.
- lhbaker, on 07/18/2009, -0/+8A guy here in Denver took a different route to work one day, and came upon a minor accident on the freeway. There was a cop who didn't speak Spanish trying to deal with people who did, and the guy pulled over to help. As he was standing there translating, a tire came off of an eighteen wheeler on the other side of the highway, and the tire struck the man and killed him instantly.
Honestly, I'd rather die instantly than go from cancer. But man, freak accidents suck. - DudeInAustin, on 07/18/2009, -0/+8This is more common than people might realize. There are a lot of old buildings out there in major cities with facades that have decayed over the years. Weathering can take its inevitable toll and we have a number of structures that are quite old (some with ages measured in centuries) and very tall. A report on the topic from 2003 has the following quote:
The late Clayford T. Grimm, ASTM member and masonry guru, wrote in the March 2000 issue of The Construction Specifier that “Masonry falls off a building façade somewhere in the United States about every three weeks. Over the past few years in the United States, at least 49 such masonry failures have killed 30 persons and injured 81.”
The report covers in some detail the debates over visual vs. physical inspection of building facades.

One of the more interesting items in the report are the excerpts from HAMMURABI’S CODE OF LAWS on the grave penalties meted out to those who constructed buildings that collapsed on their owners. This is an ancient problem. - firesphotons, on 07/18/2009, -1/+9Random harsh reality, at least she was with people she loved and her suffering was short in duration.
- ophello, on 07/18/2009, -1/+9What a ***** up way to die.
Can we build buildings that don't crumble, please? - ophello, on 07/18/2009, -0/+7Or, perhaps physics works in very well documented ways.
- ThraxyWaxy, on 07/18/2009, -0/+7I was across the street and it was ***** shocking. This huge smash/thud noise and glass flew all over the place, people started screaming and running away. I just thought it was a car driving into there or something until the dust cleared. I seriously hope someone gets sued for that; hard to avoid death from above like that..
- BongoShack, on 07/18/2009, -5/+11That's absolutely terrible.
My sympathy goes out. - mgraham80, on 07/18/2009, -0/+6Thank you!
- DLun203, on 07/18/2009, -3/+9This is unbelievable. I read this article thinking who's to blame? The hotel? The building inspector? But this is nobody's fault. Wrong place, wrong time. My sympathy goes out to the family.
- inactive, on 07/18/2009, -1/+7That's more than I can say for the people reading these comments.
- Sil369, on 07/18/2009, -0/+5LMAO bicyclethief
god i feel bad for laughing at that - LilRabbitFooFoo, on 07/18/2009, -0/+5If it bleeds, it leads.
- dhughes, on 07/18/2009, -1/+6 The Big O (no deaths), the overpass and now this? Montreal is getting a reputation for huge slabs of concrete suddenly falling off structures.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 07/18/2009, -1/+6Nah, they just have tiny penises and insecure little brains.
- benroy, on 07/18/2009, -1/+6Dude....
- inactive, on 07/18/2009, -0/+5I'd say the building inspector. That's the whole point of having one, isn't it? So this kind of thing never happens? Giant slabs of concrete shouldn't just fall for no good reason. An earthquake? Understandable. But randomly or because someone or something leaned against or touched it? If it was in that bad of shape, it would of been something that someone should have noticed.
However, when it was last inspected is a pretty important fact in this. It could of been fine when they inspected the building last, they could of been scheduled to check up on the building not long from the time of the incident. Fate can be pretty cruel.
Anyways, not trying to point fingers or anything, but I'd say if there was anyone who could be pointed at, it would be the inspector, but its a slim chance that he would be at blame unless the building was inspected shortly before the incident. - Chris_F, on 07/18/2009, -0/+4@ophello: Unless the concrete was the size of a subatomic particle, in which case she would be both dead and alive at the same time until the husband observed her and collapsed her quantum waveform.
[I'm not usually one for making joke about tragedies, but when physics is brought up I can't help it] - LilRabbitFooFoo, on 07/18/2009, -1/+5Very common in homicides. Have to get investigators there, since felony charges will be filed one way or another.
- Megadeth222, on 07/18/2009, -1/+5They probably just said it was her birthday that day to get free ice cream.
- canadabluesfan, on 07/18/2009, -3/+7Wow.....RIP.
- Akairenn, on 07/18/2009, -1/+5Yes, but your chances of being killed by a cow falling out of an airplane and crashing through your house's roof are greatly increased.
Lose lose situation! - Protonz, on 07/18/2009, -1/+5It is an opportunity to block a lot of people, hopefully I will not need to see their pathetic attempts at being witty in the future.
- gheide, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3I just had to look up how the glass facade was designed...
http://www.mikasasushibar.ca/peel-eng/images/galle ... - BinaryFragger, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3This place is becoming worse than YouTube.
- inactive, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3Its not much safer to stay at home at all. Also, the odds of something happening to you are pretty astronomical. Go outside, its not dangerous. Its more than likely more dangerous to stay at home than to go out.
- wilsonathon, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3Wow that's incredibly sad.
- benroy, on 07/18/2009, -1/+4Because there is no god.
- BuenoCabra, on 07/18/2009, -1/+4Nope, already married. FTA:
"Her husband of two years, also 33, lay next to her lifeless body screaming, “Ma femme! Ma femme! Stay with me!”
Terrible. Prayers for the family.
Edit: Oh. Well, at least I cited my source. - jesburger, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3*****, crappy radio station source.
- RebornInFlames, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3Damn I went to college a couple blocks from there that is terrible. Typical montreal city upkeep though. Bastards.
- Chris_F, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3That is a pretty unlikely way to die. Stuff like that almost never happens, and when it does, it usually results in many people dieing. But as it said, it hit her directly, and just her. It's almost like one of the deaths you'd see out of a final destination movie, completely unlikely and unbelievable. I'm sure it makes it that much more painful for the husband.
- johnn11238, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3Crackwhores can be in love.
Do you mean "why doesn't this happen to poor people?"
It does, it's just not as interesting in the paper. - sciencelovesyou, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2True, but the kid also chased a flock of pigeons, resulting in said crushification. He kinda had it coming, in a horror-movie-morality way.
- thathappycat, on 07/18/2009, -2/+4This goes to show that life is fragile. Treat everyday as if it were your last.
- MarkBrent, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2I read that in the newspaper as well...
