"FISA Amendments Act" passes Senate with bipartisan support
news.yahoo.com — WASHINGTON - The Senate has approved a bill overhauling the rules on secret government eavesdropping and granting immunity to telecom companies that helped listen in unlawfully on Americans.

Time to wake up folks. The fraudulent left-right paradigm that you have been programmed to believe in is just two sides of the same coin.- zaren, on 07/09/2008, -42/+18"Just under a third of the Senate, including presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, supported an amendment proposed by Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., that would have ***stripped immunity*** from the bill. It was defeated on a 32-66 vote. Presumptive Republican nominee John McCain did not vote." -- http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,378402,00.html
McCain let it through without questioning it, Obama tried to stop it.
Doesn't look like the same side to me...- SleighBoy, on 07/09/2008, -4/+46... "Obama ended up voting for the final bill" ...
Right below your snip, from article. - nosecohn, on 07/09/2008, -3/+41That amendment was only put in there so Dems could save face by voting for it before passing the final bill. Obama had the most to gain by that tactic, but it's transparent. The Dems caved completely and Obama went back on his word. Total failure of leadership.
- Pssdoff, on 07/09/2008, -3/+33
Obama ended up voting for the final bill, how is that stopping it???
You can't convince these brainwashed Obama supporters, they are too far gone. They just eat up Obama's image marketing, dismissing all the evidence that shows that he's not going to change anything. Obama could bite the head off of a kitten, and his minions would praise him for his glorious efforts to control the pet population. - apophenic, on 07/09/2008, -8/+2Pssdoff has clearly never played Dwarf Fortress if he doesn't believe in Senator Obama's brave effort to curb the coming catsplosion.
- yeahaboutthat, on 07/09/2008, -2/+15What is left to be said beyond the thousands of comments posted associated with various articles digg'ed up by the digg community since the telecoms news was first exposed? We have a Congress that has failed, repeatedly, miserably, and in supreme cowardly fashion, in their sworn duty to uphold the constitution of the United States. Moreover, the citizenry of this once great country shares much of the blame for letting this occur. Shame on all of us.
- SleighBoy, on 07/09/2008, -4/+46... "Obama ended up voting for the final bill" ...
- sportsstar67, on 07/09/2008, -37/+7Well son, it's either Obama or McCain..Pick your poison
- JKap, on 07/09/2008, -6/+29Take your poison and shove it.
- senatorpjt, on 07/09/2008, -2/+9I live in NY, Obama has already won here. I can vote for whoever the ***** I want and it won't matter, why waste it on one of those two.
If you live in a "red state" or a "blue state" the only way you're "throwing your vote away" is by voting for the major party candidates. - Killwize, on 07/10/2008, -1/+2Your Hurting Democracy!

Anyone who voted FOR this bill is SOFT ON CRIME!- getrdone656, on 07/10/2008, -2/+3Does not voting count becuase McCain was doing just that.
- positron, on 07/10/2008, -1/+4Not voting is just as bad. Worse, actually. It shows that not only are you soft on crime but you are a coward as well.
- JHB800, on 07/10/2008, -0/+6Then Obama's about the worst there is. A majority of his votes on the most controversial bills last year were simply 'present', meaning he didn't have the balls to actually make a choice. McCain's voting is inexcusable, but don't lessen how bad Obama's vote was.
- Whackly, on 07/09/2008, -14/+14You're badass with your pun and your black-and-white exposition. What'd your champion support?
- gn0stik, on 07/09/2008, -0/+17What the ***** are you talking about? Black and white is the problem, he's promoting shades of grey.
- schneid4323, on 07/09/2008, -4/+27Time to wake up, the ride was fun, but it was just a ride.
- N)SBoarder, on 07/09/2008, -22/+9you say that they are both two sides of the same coin...i find this true...
BUT
You have to pick the lesser of two evils when you vote - and this is Obama. (this now seems strictly because he lies less than McCain and he shows some sort of respect for the American People) There seems to be nothing that we as a people can do to change how ***** up our government is, because the checks and balances are no more. The Repubs are ***** crazy and the spineless ***** democrats (most not all) are complacent in most of the crimes committed by this administration by standing by the wayside. No one will be held accountable for the crimes committed against this country. What a sad day in America - I am wholeheartedly ashamed and not anywhere near proud of what our country has been for the last 7 years. This is disgusting. If only the founding fathers could see what has been done to the America they created.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!- Innagadadavida, on 07/09/2008, -5/+17You don't have to pick the lesser of two evils. It's that kind of mentality that keeps the two-party system in power.
Bob Barr '08 - N)SBoarder, on 07/09/2008, -12/+6you think Bob Barr can get elected...much less change anything...?!?!?
what a clown. - superkendall, on 07/09/2008, -9/+4McCain doesn't lie at all. He says he supports the surge, and so he did. He says he supports FISA, and while he didn't vote he's not backing down.
Just because someone believes something different than you does not mean they are "lying". - N)SBoarder, on 07/09/2008, -7/+5Never said he lied about this...i know he supports FISA, but there are many documented cases (on video) where mccain says that he opposed/supported something that he now says he never claimed to oppose/support. The dudes a ***** that doesnt realize people can document and call him on his ***** now.
Also Obama never lied on this (FISA)...he just betrayed his base - BAFrayd, on 07/09/2008, -1/+8"Also Obama never lied on this (FISA)...he just betrayed his base"
Look up the definition of betrayal...
Obama is a liar and a hypocrite (I'll refer you to the campaign finance reform hypocrisy on his part.).
What I seriously can't comprehend is why people continue to support a candidate even when faced with direct evidence that the candidate is not who he claims to be.
Is it an ego thing? Perhaps it is just pure intellectual laziness? Both? - wolferz, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2if every campaign comes down to the lesser of two evils than it's time for us to go get ourselves some fire arms and march on the capitol.
- Innagadadavida, on 07/09/2008, -5/+17You don't have to pick the lesser of two evils. It's that kind of mentality that keeps the two-party system in power.
- rz8472, on 07/09/2008, -19/+7I don't support what Obama did but it's important to point out some nuances -
Obama doesn't support telecom immunity. He just doesn't have the spine to filibuster it because of some ill-conceived move to "the center"- BAFrayd, on 07/09/2008, -0/+8He voted for the bill! What part of voting for a bill shows a lack of support for it?
Please, when will people learn that you judge a candidate by his actions and NOT by the lies that come from his mouth?! - silent7seven, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1^Obama voted for FISA, he supports wiretapping and all that jazz. He voted to remove section II, which grants immunity to the telecoms.
I'm not happy about how everyone (not just Obama) voted. I don't feel that he flip-flopped, but considering the coverage that this bill is getting, he should realize how the American people expect him to vote. Regards of how Obama voted, the bill wouldn't have passed. I get the impression that everyone expects him to shoulder the entire country, whereas he is a senator representing the state of Illinois...
- BAFrayd, on 07/09/2008, -0/+8He voted for the bill! What part of voting for a bill shows a lack of support for it?
- Konrad9, on 07/09/2008, -15/+3Ok, so Obama isn't a good candidate.
Who would you suggest I vote for?
McCain? Yeah, great choice.
Independents? Yeah, they'll get enough votes.- gn0stik, on 07/09/2008, -3/+13Look, the thing is, you have no good choices. "Throw your vote away" by voting for a third party or vote for the "lesser evil."
The thing is, most people don't understand that those two concepts are diametrically opposed to one another once you know enough about our two party system. You are only throwing your vote away, when you vote for a bad candidate. Period. If everyone voted their conscience, a third party would win. So how is voting for a lesser evil NOT throwing your vote away, when you could have actually made it ***** count?
VOTE YOUR CONSCIENCE.
If you have independent views, find a candidate that matches those views.
I'm voting for Barr.
I choose not to vote for evil at all. In any amount. - superkendall, on 07/09/2008, -10/+4WHy not McCain?
At least he's for reductions in spending, which is going to be really key over the next few years as spending from both Democrats and Republicans is out of hand. McCain had ZERO earmarks last year. - NorthMass, on 07/09/2008, -2/+5Vote 3rd party Konrad9 Bob Barr is polling 10% in New Hampshire, stop voting for the lesser of two evils you are not helping anyone by doing that except Barack Obama.
- miriv365, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3Vote for Kodos
- senatorpjt, on 07/09/2008, -4/+3If everyone "voted their conscience" it would be a total disaster - you'd basically end up with the candidate from the biggest voting bloc winning, and the other 90% would be pissed off. For president, you would probably end up with someone like Ted Haggard.
- wolferz, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2@senatorpjt
I think you have "voting your conscience" and "voting based on who's supporters you want to fit in with" mixed up.
Oh and i don't think it would be bad at all to have people vote based on issues... It would certainly be better than having people vote based on party affiliations.
- gn0stik, on 07/09/2008, -3/+13Look, the thing is, you have no good choices. "Throw your vote away" by voting for a third party or vote for the "lesser evil."
- Zuggy, on 07/09/2008, -2/+30This whole "it's just a move to the center to be more electable" or "he doesn't want to look weak on national security so he can get elected" is a steaming pile of *****. A true leader, looking to change the US, would stick to his or her guns, and not cave because they might not get elected if they don't cave
I've lost my faith in Obama. But I live in Idaho so it doesn't matter how I vote, are electoral votes will go to McCain (I will be voting)- V3NOM, on 07/10/2008, -0/+8Politicians tell people what they want to hear. True leaders tell people what they need to hear. I agree.
- silent7seven, on 07/10/2008, -1/+2A true leader sticking to his guns.... like Bush?
- redslash, on 07/10/2008, -1/+3Oh, don't you be mistaken about Bush. Wrong he may be, but he IS a true leader.
- mummbleswers, on 07/09/2008, -10/+3Yeah I still support him - have you seen the alternative? Nice way to simplify the decision to vote - how many McCain points do you get today?
- nepidae, on 07/09/2008, -4/+13"Suckers and robo-voters". So what do you call people who will vote for McCain?
This election is getting worse all the time.- superkendall, on 07/09/2008, -9/+7They will vote for McCain because of positions he has held and continue to hold. So I'd call them "informed".
Why would you NOT vote for McCain, when he's at least honest about what he's going to do from that start AND is against excessive government spending? - JKap, on 07/10/2008, -2/+8They're all globalist stooges. Give it a name.
McCain is a complete and utter disgrace and not quite as competent as the trained globalist chimp and Acting President. He is a caricature of himself.
Here in 1984, in the middle of another Three-Year Plan, "the politics of honor" is the politics of dishonor. McCCCP dishonors this country with every calculated move that he makes to advance his imperialist/satanist masters' plans for "global governance."
The unconstitutional FISA legislation and "retroactive telecom immunity" (an ex post facto law prohibited by Article I, Section 9 of the Constitution, an after the fact law) that O-bomb-a just endorsed is similarly dishonorable on the part of one Barack H. Obama.
We are living in a surveillance/police state and we can thank one Barack H. Obama for his part in the destruction of our Constitutional Republic.
The game is rigged. The deck is stacked. The two CFR-toady's and their Bilateral War Party will not be getting my vote--ever. - PhillAholic, on 07/10/2008, -0/+9"Why would you NOT vote for McCain, when he's at least honest about what he's going to do from that start AND is against excessive government spending?"
Because what he is "honest" about doing is bad. I'll give him one thing, I didn't have to shovel through a lot of ***** to find out what he thinks. And btw, Bush was against excessive government spending, nation building and foreign intervention. I assume you know how that turned out. Vote by Actions, not by Verbal *****.
- superkendall, on 07/09/2008, -9/+7They will vote for McCain because of positions he has held and continue to hold. So I'd call them "informed".

- pseudononymist, on 07/10/2008, -1/+8sad that there's truth in any of the Episode 1, 2 or 3 quotes, yes.
- wolferz, on 07/10/2008, -0/+6@ut2k4king
there has always been truth in star wars... but that's nothing special really. All movies are bassed to some degree on past events in human history and, as any historian will tell you, history has a habit of repeating itself.
Thus the phrase: the more things change, the more they stay the same.
- albator, on 07/09/2008, -4/+21you think you have a leftwing in USA ?
lol - sjolliff, on 07/09/2008, -12/+1It's funny to hear Neocons talk of independent thinking. All the while parroting the same old crap they hear on FOX. McCain sidestepped the vote. Obama had the nerve to vote his mind. A very desirable quality for a president indeed.
- BAFrayd, on 07/09/2008, -0/+6So voting to shred the constitution is a "very desirable" quality? Wow...
- vandernderyid, on 07/09/2008, -9/+18Yes it stinks that Obama voted for this.
But it ain't an ex post facto law. Yes it's after the fact. But that's not what an ex post facto law is. Congress passes all sorts of ex post facto law.
An ex post facto law exists only in the domain of criminal law. An ex post facto law criminalizes conduct that was not a crime at the time of commission, or requires that the burden to convict be made lighter.
Here, it's civil immunity that we are talking about, so it's clearly not an ex post facto law.
This law sucks. It's a gross violation of the 4th Amendment. But it ain't an ex post facto law.
Sorry that my reply wasn't pithy and diggish, but damnit, I'm getting tired of people misunderstanding the Constitution. - tyho, on 07/10/2008, -4/+18People are having a meltdown over at the Daily Kos:

- richmomz, on 07/10/2008, -6/+18We are all thirsty for real change, but unfortunately the true candidate for change, Ron Paul, was masterfully marginalized and discredited by the establishment while Obama was put forward as the "mainstream" candidate for change, a man of no experience but substantial connections with the Council on Foreign Relations, an organization which shares membership or association with such fine individuals as Bush, Cheney, the Clintons, McCain, Romney, Rumsfeld, Giulliani, Thompson and other assorted political pondscum. Every "mainstream" candidate came from this carefully selected pool of individuals, and anyone outside of this clique was immediately pushed to the sidelines. There is no two party system - there is only one party: the CFR.
You have no say, you have no choice, you have no freedom. You are nothing more than a serf who believes he is free, a puppet at the mercy of the powers that be. one day ... one day - snapcase, on 07/10/2008, -1/+5Honestly I can't bring myself to vote for Obama, and I sure as hell can't vote for McCain. At this point I doubt I'll even vote. And if I do vote it'll probably be as a write-in or for a third party.
We have been presented with two different flavors of ***** sandwich. Now you have to go to the polls and decide which one you want to take a big ol' bite out of. I'll pass. - spankaccount, on 07/10/2008, -3/+1I hope a third party nut job comes in and divides the democrats further. And the though of Obamatons staying home just warms my heart. Si se puede!

I was discussing the public's distaste for real issues with an astronomy prof. and he told me about a time when he was working out at a gym and was talking with the guy next to him who upon hearing of my prof's field of study blurted out "Wow, so you're telling me there are rocks in space?" this man was an executive in an office building....needless to say the prof was floored. - spriggig, on 07/09/2008, -1/+6I can sympathize, it makes my head hurt too! - flogistan, on 07/09/2008, -1/+10This weds the corporation to the government in a new way. This isn't lobbying by corporations. It's not a contract. It's a marriage of the two in collusion against the people. It is a very meaningful and precedent setting step. The neocons have achieved a landmark consensus on the move toward national socialism. It's only the beginning because it benefits both partners.
- Naieve, on 07/10/2008, -1/+2I see you missed the Bipartisan part.
Or do you not understand the term? - flogistan, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1If it weren't for the straussians, none of this would have happened. They had the patriot act drawn up before 9/11 happened. They've done a hell of a job getting bipartisan support, it's true. That tends to happen when national socialists get into power.
- Naieve, on 07/10/2008, -1/+2I see you missed the Bipartisan part.
- DamnMan, on 07/09/2008, -0/+17Eh? and what are we going to do exactly? Write letters to our senators? yeah that'll work. Our letters vs Lobby pressure. Our outrage, or the campaign funds from corporations to sooth us back into complacency in another 6 years. My vote? I didn't vote for a single one of these jack offs. Even if i had it would have been ONLY one not the other 99. Can we even make reasonably informed choice? Telecomm immunity wasn't even a thought in anyone's head the last time my state elected a senator. Or the last time people voted for Bush, Or Congress member.
We are here. We are screaming. But the reality is grim. There is nothing short of revolution that is likely to change it. And how will that work? We already rounded up guns. And know EXACTLY where the rest of the guns are. They have already passed the laws required to summarily squash any "unrest" before it gets "out of hand". We lost. We lost long before Bush Jr. And we lost clapping and cheering at political victory speeches. We lost one vote at a time waving patriotic poster boards to show our support for the same cookie cutter punch outs pandering to our illogical and emotional knee jerk reactions that made us feel good. It just took us until now to notice the water slowly getting hotter. We made our Faustian deal and now its time to collect.- PopcornDave, on 07/09/2008, -0/+6May I suggest that it lies in the software and encryption? That may be our last salvation.
The other option is to screw with this system like people were when they tried Echelon. Sprinkle nonsense in your phone conversations just to screw with anyone listening that shouldn't be. If enough people do that, it will make the entire system useless.
I'm sure that the next thing that the genius puppets in Washington go after is encryption because nobody who has anything to hide would need to hide it, right? Hopefully someone is working on a plain text type of stenography that would make an encoded message look just like normal text. Or maybe I'm being optimistic. - flogistan, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3@popcorndave. That's an interesting idea, but I can't help imagining a story about a society that was under such heavy surveillance, that they eventually develop an entirely senseless and insane language of gibberish.
- Elliuotatar, on 07/10/2008, -0/+5um, that's What stEganopgraphy is. hiding A message in an image oR plain tExt. oF coUrse, some methods of stiCKing a mEssage in such places are better for keeping it hiDden than others.
But methods which do so in ways which are relatively undetectable do exist. For example, in a document where words are spaced to justify the text to both sides of the page, the way the text is offset can be altered slightly from the ideal to
encode information. And in a sufficiently large text, misspelled words could encode some information, but you would have to keep the number low relative to the total number of words in the document, lest it appear as something more than noise. - STPZ, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1I have to disagree on one point, we are not screaming; at least that is that not many of us are screaming and its disgusting. Nothing but complacency.

- WhiteIce89, on 07/10/2008, -0/+10How can you keep up this pointless ranting when Jamie Lynn just had her baby????
- Elliuotatar, on 07/10/2008, -0/+6Lots of Americans give a *****. The problem is however that there's not enough of us who care deeply enough about this sort of thing to DO anything about it. The way stuff gets done is you vote people out of office who don't have your best interests in mind. But all the people of this country give a ***** about are abortions, gay weddings, and the price of gasoline.
- richmomz, on 07/10/2008, -0/+14...maybe Ron Paul was right.
- stilesja, on 07/10/2008, -0/+7You bet your ass if this FISA Bill was having an affair with A-Rod the whole country would know about it.
- wolferz, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3*straightens his own tinfoil hat for a change*
The reason Americans don't give a ***** is because they have been brainwashed for years not to. We are a society of instant results and politics is nothing more than the slow churning of bureaucratic drudgery. People only get interested in politics when the current politics is effecting them on a personal level.
Now wait, I'm not saying the government actually INTENDED THIS... though I suppose that is possible. It's more like it jsut happened, some way/some how, and many of the people who noticed are taking advantage of it. *shrug*
I forget who the quote was from, a founding father I believe, but it went something like this: "For democracy to succeed requires an educated and well informed public." Americans today are neither educated nor well informed... and it is by choice. That is the real tragedy. - Babazoz, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Like any of you ever gave a ***** about the constitution except when you could rail about it to put yourself on a higher moral plateau in, of all things, an internet argument.
Especially hilarious is Diggers chastising people over making a big deal over fluff and celebrity pieces. It's hilarious because one just needs to look at the front page of Digg on any given day to see Diggers attention to news that "truly matters."- stilesja, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1I think railing about the constitution is appropriate when our rights are being violated. It is not about putting one's self on a "higher moral plateau", in fact it is just that kind of logic that allows our constitutional rights to be whittled away. As for digger, I don't think it is surprising to see all the fluff stories as they are representative piece of the general public which makes them popular. It is only on Digg however that the people that do care about our rights can occasionally break through the noise to get their message heard.
- Conwaysb0718, on 07/09/2008, -0/+44No kidding... one day, i was in a political conversation at work, and this person overhearing our discussion suddenly chimes in with "gah, politics makes my head hurt." and then giggled. I failed to see the humor.

- rz8472, on 07/09/2008, -2/+20Especially after the contentious primary season, I've gained a bit of respect for Senator Clinton. Because New York is a safe 'blue' state and she isn't up for reelection anyways, I think we can assume that she was not under any major pressure to vote in any way other than what suited her conscience.
- Zuggy, on 07/09/2008, -2/+14I agree, if Clinton had received the nomination I predict we would making all this ruckus about her because she would probably voted for it

- JHB800, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1She voted yes on cloture because that aspect of the session had absolutely no chance of failing, and she wanted to go ahead and get the vote over with. You're a fool if you think that voting yes on cloture is on the same level as voting yes for the bill. The cloture vote is a dirty political trick the democrats thought up while they were in the minority (to prevent legitimate legislation from making it through) and I'm happy that it wasn't exploited to prevent an up or down vote on the bill. (this post ignores the actual content of the bill, which is a completely different matter)

- USNavyBlue, on 07/09/2008, -5/+1As of rate now - a whole lot of cash because of the fuel prices. And besides the March 12 July 2008 - this Saturday. Because of the short notice on booking a flight you will REALLY PAY threw the nose and it could cost you around 1500 round trip.
- megarobotguy, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3The lowest price on expedia.com starts around $530 with tax and fees for july 10 thru 13th, non-stop/round trip. Sorry I just had to check because 1500 bucks seems way too much even with the current high fuel prices. Also $530 was the lowest price given when I checked. When it comes to the best prices it really is all on luck because I just went back to check and it was gone.... :-(

- MrXfromPlanetX, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1You need to start at the caucus level to determine who the party puts on the ballot. That's where the real power is at. Giving people they idea the key is the November elections is the greatest deception of all time

We need to change who gets on the ballot. - Jadinlee, on 07/10/2008, -0/+6I agree with you. Time to clean house.
And I don't buy the argument others make about "who else" would you vote for. If a new person comes in and does the same... vote them out! "Not" voting someone out simply because the next person might be the same or worse just doesn't make any sense. In that case, why do we put criminals in jail? Aren't we just making room for the "next" criminal to come along and take their place?

- merm, on 07/09/2008, -1/+29Thing is that while many of us have called ourselves Obama supporters at one time or another, this doesn't mean we can't disagree strongly with any particular stance he takes. - smcgrath, on 07/09/2008, -5/+112To me this is as big of an treasonous act as the original vote to go to war in Iraq. Thank you Senators Dodd, Specter, and Bingaman for at least trying to do the right thing.
Shame on all the others for allowing this to pass. That extends to the rest of the US too, 200 years of protected rights, down the drain because we collectively "looked the other way".- grantino9, on 07/09/2008, -1/+19FYI, Sen. Specter voted "yay" on the legislation. At this point, our executive branch is full of crooks and our legislative branch has abrogated its constitutional duties. - riseabove, on 07/09/2008, -17/+3oh please, nobody's going to die over this, this is the most overhyped political movement. this bill restores law and order, so the president cant go around spying on anybody he pleases, and you're outraged. maybe if they would have shot it down, and the president would have another year to look through your *****, would you really feel that much better?

- nontoxyc, on 07/09/2008, -9/+161The leadership of the United States of America has committed high crimes and treason against the American people. Here is my list of charges against the Democrats and Republicans in the Senate and White House:
1) They used false and misleading intelligence to start wars in Afghanistan and Iraq
2) They have violated the Constitution by holding US citizens without charges
3) They have violated the Constitution by tapping our calls without warrants
4) They have violated the Geneva Conventions by waging wars of aggression for profit
5) They have violated the Geneva Conventions by torturing enemy combatants in Abu Ghraib.
6) They have committed financial crimes against the American people by devaluing our dollar.
7) The outing of an undercover identity is a capital crime under US law.
It is hereby RESOLVED that the DEMOCRATS are TRAITORS just like the REPUBLICANS. They have lost their claim to power by their illegal actions. The only answer is to PROTEST. Digg it up. If we don't stop them now we may not be able to.
I'm going to the DNC to protest--then I'm going to the RNC to protest--then I'm going to DC- kuppoppo, on 07/09/2008, -23/+4Ok, you do that.
- rknicker, on 07/09/2008, -3/+11Cut me in for gas money?
- phybere, on 07/09/2008, -8/+4You're new here, aren't you?
- unii, on 07/09/2008, -5/+8Protest huh? At some point you will understand this...
There are three types of people in this world :
1.) The ignorant and confused (By their own choice or not) - this point in history, they are the majority
2.) The aware, intelligent, empowered who :
a.) Chose to do good and help those in group 1 become a part of group 2
b.) Chose to to bad.. manipulate, lie, cheat, steal and use group 1 to magnify their force.
So, by protesting you somehow hope to reach the idiots who have either resigned to being idiots or just don't care? can you give them healthcare? Can you give them money from the future? Who then do you think they will listen to (2a.) who identifies them rightfully as morons or (2b.) who gives them goodies?
Try sometimes to help group 1 but don't stop working with group 2a. to make some changes.. By any means.
Think what would have happened if hackers/pirates decided to protest instead of taking what was 'right'....... Nothing..... You probably would be paying $25 a cd w/ no other choice. You gotta fight for what is right. You gotta put your neck on the line sometimes. Just yelling to deaf ears wont do anything. You want something in this life you gotta fight for it.
Stop yelling your voice out there to covered ears...They can hear and see just like you... - FlaNative, on 07/09/2008, -14/+24Because the other choice is McCaine?
- zizzybaloobah, on 07/09/2008, -8/+8Idiot.
The 'other' choice? There are only two? As long as the electorate keeps this mindset (only 2 choices) then there will never be an appreciable change in America - because both parties know they'll always been in power, the only question is who owns the majority.
If people would start voting for candidates they like instead of 'the lesser of two evils' then perhaps things would start changing. - chaosblade77, on 07/10/2008, -3/+6Technically... and sadly... there are only two. Do you honestly think Barr or Nader have a shot? You could vote for them, I could vote for them, all of the semi-intelligent or better digg users could vote for them. Along with other supporters, they'd still only be at what, 4 or 5%?
I think pushing for changes in congress should come before pushing for presidential changes... although by the end of Bush's term, congress may be to the US as the queen is to England. - oconnor11, on 07/10/2008, -1/+6Yes, I do think the Constitutional or Libertarian Party has a shot. You're damn right I think they do. Until today, I was undecided. Today, I have decided 100% not to vote for Republicans nor Democrats. Vote your conscience. Both Barr and Chuck Baldwin will uphold the Constitution. If by some miracle Ron Paul won the Republican nomination, I'd vote for him. He seems to be an upright guy with years of voting in favor of our civil liberties. I will not settle for what the media is trying to manipulate us with. Have you not noticed that they just don't have any time to air anyone but Obama and McCain? Makes one wonder who is slipping them their money......just like Congress.

---Lesser of two evils---- whataboutdave, on 07/09/2008, -1/+8At this point that is increasingly the best case for him. A few more decisions like this one and he'll come tumbling back to earth.
- superkendall, on 07/09/2008, -10/+3Why lesser? McCain at least is straightforward. If you cannot believe what Obama says on any issue, how on earth is he the LESSER evil?
- N)SBoarder, on 07/09/2008, -1/+12McCain has been proven time and again (on video) that he is a liar and a flip-flopper...he thinks americans are just to retarded to call him on his *****. Obama also said that he was going to vote for the bill, so he wasnt lieing, he just betrayed his base...
- superkendall, on 07/09/2008, -4/+2Right, he's proven time and time again on video clips taken out of context by Huffpo. Anyone who actually has seen what he says knows he's been pretty consistant. He supported the surge, he didn't add any earmarks last year. Good enough for me.
- losangelian, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1McCain:
Voting against a bill that would ban torture. Embracing Jerry Fallwell after correctly calling him an agent of intolerance. An advocate for permanent military bases in Iraq. Rattling the saber for war with Iran. No chance of investigating the crimes of the Bush administration who need to be held accountable! The Supreme Court! The balance is almost tipped to the ultra-conservatives, and if that happens, it will f^k this country up for a long time.
Obama's vote is very disheartening, but he is still the better choice.
- SchrodingersCar, on 07/09/2008, -4/+47I was an Obama supporter from the very start. Honestly now, I'm not sure how to react. But I'm definately not here to defend him. He ***** up. The only difference between my present perspective and yours is that I'm not yet ready to believe Obama has been maliciously lying while tenting his fingers... I just think he's much more of a spineless politician than I originally thought he was, which is almost as bad. He caved.
I'm not afraid to say it... I'm confused and hurt. I'm NOT voting for McCain - but at this stage... I don't think I'm voting for Obama either. Though... if he realizes what kind of ***** he pulled today just for play-it-safe politics points and starts to TANGIBLY work for the change he likes to talk about, yeah maybe he can win that vote back. So there's a (former?) Obama supporter's opinion. Please think about the parties the media doesn't have time to air. The Constitutional and Libertarian Parties are committed to protecting our Constitutional rights and freedoms. This is the election they need to be given a fighting chance. I can't for the life of me vote for either McCain nor Obama (and I was undecided). My conscience won't allow it.
- oconnor11, on 07/10/2008, -0/+4It's time to consider the Constitutional or Libertarian parties. Now that I know how much corruption is in Washington, I now understand why the media has no time for parties other than Republicans and Democrats.
- SchrodingersCar, on 07/10/2008, -1/+6That Hillary was a better choice I will not concede. She would have cast the same vote if she were the nom. And perhaps Obama's character was a facade... but Hillary's character was outwardly evident. Which is why I did not support her.

- spriggig, on 07/09/2008, -3/+7Well, as if you really don't know: Because if we split our vote or don't vote then the other two-faced liar in the race will win and that would be much worse. This is the reality of the system we allow to rule us.

Closed-minded persons such as yourself from both sites of the political spectrum are the single most destructive force in government and to this country.
You might think this doesn't affect you, but to think that way is like saying drunk driving doesn't affect you because you don't do it.- mbraynard, on 07/10/2008, -5/+1Your knowledge of history is sadly lacking. The idea that somehow the telephone company has some constitutional requirement to keep your phone records private for you is as inane as it gets.
If even Obama, the most inept nominee in my lifetime, can GET THIS, why can't you? - SquigglyP, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1When did I bring up history or the founders? I don't even like Obama. Both he and McCain are the exact same candidate. They differ on several issues, but for the most part they both think the same exact way. Both are more focused on making sure their 'team' wins than they are with protecting and serving the citizens of this country. They both do nothing but tow the party line, and the little 'war' going on here in the US at the political level - which has been going on for ***** knows how long - is what I'm referring to. It's this sort of irrational hatred of the 'other side' that is damaging this country. Liberal or conservative doesn't matter. Liberals are not your enemy, and you are not theirs. We all have to live here, and getting a candidate in office that you KNOW will disregard approximately half of the citizens of this country in order to further some agenda that you yourself won't even gain from... that's just ignorant and selfish, and it's not the proper way to run a ***** country.
Obama and McCain are both horrible choices for president, as were pretty much all of the candidates whice even ran. It's people like you, who are willing to throw aside their own rights for the sake of winning some kind of name-calling battle in Washington that I just don't understand. What's the ***** point? "Yeah! We won! Now we can continue to kill as many people as we want, no matter how many of our citizens think we're wrong!" or if the democrats win: "Yeah! We won! Now we can tax the ***** out of the people who support our economy and pass the savings to the lazy ***** who contribute nothing to society!"
The war you think you are fighting is a figment of your imagination. Stop thinking of other citizens as your enemies, because the only enemies of yours live in Washington and are doing everything they can to slowly chip away at your freedoms.

- OC73, on 07/09/2008, -4/+87Now I'm never voting for Obama.
- PeppermintPig, on 07/10/2008, -3/+3You were considering it? lol
- FrOzeN89, on 07/10/2008, -2/+1How can this justify voting for McCain? Do you not understand the consequences of war? I am appalled at what Obama has done, but there's no way a lack of privacy justifies putting a war-hungry leader in charge.
Please America, stop being selfish ***** and think about what the candidate your voting for may do that affects the world.
- purkel, on 07/09/2008, -2/+75Obama is a false hope for America... Corporate America has him under their thumb, just like all the other candidates.
- PrincessSalami, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4but he's oh so handsome and loveable!
just look at his smile! That cant be the smile of a puppet...not a chance...
now wheres that change hes been talking about I want a coffee!
There are more important things things in life then my rights to freedom and liberty... like that Simon Cowell, hes such an ass! Or hey what do I tell my kids about Jamie Lynn Spears's baby!? - macaholic, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1I'm sorry, perhaps I'm missing something, but is there any legitimate proof that Obama is being controlled by "Corporate America" as you claim? Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending him in any way, however, if you can't provide any real proof, your conspiracies are just as valid as those of the staged moon landings. So I implore all of you who claim conspiracy, where is the proof?
- woody412, on 07/10/2008, -1/+3who cares? he's taken off his choir boy costume and now looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and talks like a duck -- what other proof do you need?
- PrincessSalami, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4but he's oh so handsome and loveable!
- catcher6250, on 07/09/2008, -5/+44***** ***** ***** ***** ***** ***** ***** ***** *****!
- homercles337, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5Thats what i was going to say! :|
- alpharaptor, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2truer words never spoken
- LinkGCN4, on 07/10/2008, -4/+1Ok, now this is just ridiculous. I realize this is a big issue. But catcher6250's comment was not constructive in the least. He didn't even make a statement. Digg the comments that actually contribute, not every comment that seems sympathetic to the group.
- homercles337, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5Thats what i was going to say! :|
- Jhiaxuz, on 07/09/2008, -5/+31Wow. The Americans did not bring peace to the middle east and now have a fascist tyrant running the show.
Who could have guessed?- PolishLogic, on 07/09/2008, -1/+10"fascist"
You mean there's only one?
- PolishLogic, on 07/09/2008, -1/+10"fascist"
- imhalfpirate, on 07/09/2008, -3/+17Not surprised. Was anyone?
- Albear89, on 07/09/2008, -1/+6nope
- icexe, on 07/09/2008, -1/+35What a thoroughly useless bunch of spineless wimps....
- diggduggDOOM, on 07/09/2008, -1/+33My CA vote means little, but I doubt I'll be casting it for Obama in the fall. I had hoped for more from a man who taught constitutional law. I'm fine with updating FISA, but I don't believe anyone should be granted retroactive immunity.
- kenedamick, on 07/09/2008, -1/+33Have fun in November - I am done voting for this 2 party rigged *****.
- woody412, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2i'm tempted to vote nader or somehow for ron paul. what else is going to send a message that this is not going to be tolerated? and after the election, let the whining masses chastise me for voting nader and splitting the left -- obama is not representing the america i want to live in now. i don't know how he could think that he's representing the america that he wants his children to grow up in.
- iancgi, on 07/09/2008, -2/+27You're all being lied to. No mainstream candidate cares about this country.
Wealth and finnacing from multinational corporations does not mean they are good people, all it means is that they are the only people willing to be sub servant to these bureaucrats. - kuppoppo, on 07/09/2008, -14/+12Digg this comment if you've actually read the full text of this bill. I bet this comment sinks into oblivion with +1 or +2 diggs.
- riseabove, on 07/09/2008, -6/+7they haven't. they don't really care, they just want to be "revolutionary"
- phybere, on 07/09/2008, -1/+6A link to the full bill would be helpful. A lot of people are still learning about this...
http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi ... - hopefully that works - flameboy, on 07/09/2008, -1/+9I have read most of the bill, including the important part (retroactive immunity)
It is located here: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c110:S.2248:
I still dugg you down for your insinuation that people who hate it simply haven't directly read it. There are a plethora of reports on it that correctly analyze the legislation's text. The complains against this bill are incredibly accurate and many prominent organizations (ACLU and EFF) are taking the exact same stances.
It doesn't matter if people have read the actual text, just that the popular analysis is correct (and it is)- studdenfadden, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1How can you possibly analyze something you have not read? Most of people on Digg having a hissyfit over this bill are just sheep following what some one else told them the cover of the book looks like.
- flameboy, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2Most of the beliefs you hold are the result of somebody explaining them to you. That's how human education works. There are numerous credible sources that have correctly analyzed this bill and conveyed key information to the public meaning that most people do not have to read the actual legislation.
Do you read the text of every law before you form opinions about it? That's just an absurd theory.
- zebco, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2I see what you're doing there! You're trying to play grown up with a bunch of Diggers. Well I'm not falling for it.
Honestly though, this ***** is written in pure legalese (You may need to google that word, so I'll wait while you do......)
and I trust a small, few news outlets to break this down into laymen's terms. I understand full well exactly what this bill means for our future, what it does to the rule of law and how it tramples on our 4th amendment rights.
That's really what you need to know. As far as 'reading the bill' everyone could do it but unless they have a law degree, they're going to walk away not knowing anything more than the person who read a summary of it from a legitimate news source.
- Badandy127, on 07/09/2008, -1/+40I'm not going to vote FOR someone who won't respect my civil rights. I don't care if it's a lesser of two evils, I will not stoop so low as to give a candidate who has helped take my constitutional rights away any help in an election.
- macaholic, on 07/10/2008, -4/+2This is not the right attitude to take, be realistic people, not voting for a mainstream candidate isn't going to change anything. In fact IMO the people we put in congress have the greatest impact on this country, so why not focus your efforts on them? For starters abolishing the ridiculous lobbying system wherein a corporation can simply pay off representatives effectively silencing hte voters.
- wolferz, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1unless we all do it... but most, like you will sit there saying there is no hope in a better candidate and by doing so, make it true.
- tnoy, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2A non-mainstream candidate getting upwards of 20% of the vote is going to send a bigger message than a couple Congresspeople getting elected.

- Qtip42, on 07/09/2008, -3/+27Traitors, all of them. Time to burn them at the stake and let them face the people they no longer represent.
- groumpf, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5Doing it in that order is pretty useless if you ask me...
- briankoenig03, on 07/09/2008, -27/+49Feel free to rip Obama on this issue, but stop acting like Ron Paul is a faultless Messiah in this case either.
Ron Paul didn't even show up to vote on H.R. 6304.
http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2008/roll437.xml
Obama tried to strip the retroactive immunity, while Ron Paul and John McCain didn't even vote on the issue. I stand by my endorsement.- ironhide, on 07/09/2008, -24/+17In before the Paultards try to defend their almighty saint.
I don't care if he had a speaking engagement. There was enough advance notice for this bill to be all over the 'net for days before the house voted. It's his ***** job to show up and vote. - rz8472, on 07/09/2008, -3/+14Same reason why no one is mentioning Russ Feingold. He's the one who's leading the fight against immunity and at least - along with Sen. Dodd - delayed it for this long, while I don't hear Ron Paul taking any similar measures in the House. Certainly we agree with his position, but there are dozens of politicians who have the same.
And besides, Feingold - being a senator in a swing state that went to Kerry in 2004 by just a few thousand votes - has a lot more to lose and is under a lot more pressure to 'compromise' than a Republican almost guaranteed re-election in a 'safe' congressional district. - bhamster, on 07/09/2008,
