afterdowningstreet.org — By Bill Van Auken, WSWS The most stunning revelation in a 370-page Justice US Department Inspector General's report released this week was that agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation had formally opened a War Crimes file, documenting torture they had witnessed at the Guantnamo Bay US prison camp, before being ordered by th

The word criminal is functionally misleading anyway, criminals are minorities who rob liqour stores. Besides being white, bush et al have robbed... everybody. And they shot, killed, maimed, tortured, lied and manipulated millions of people to do it.
But this is America. And they've already made enough money to avoid ever being "criminals" in the eyes of the court/law. Victory --> Bush.
*****.- neurobox, on 05/29/2008, -1/+3Ya know... If an ordinary citizen can be thrown in jail for telling a lie in a simple court case, how much more should a man with this much power be punished for not only misleading the country and fellow politicians from the white house pulpit, but um.. by the way almost single-handedly costing hundreds of thousands of people their lives? There should be a lightweight (as in quick moving) legal framework in place to prevent this garbage. This 4 years stuff should not be a guarantee by any means.

- dafragsta, on 05/29/2008, -9/+20You guys are all naive. Bush has MONTHS left in office. There is no point in pursuing legal action now. In fact, the chances of him spending time in prison are MUCH greater after that. Think about it... if you don't nail Bush and Cheney at the same time, one pardons the other. If they are both out of office, powerless, and clearly in the crosshairs of the legal system, they will get the book thrown at them.
The McClellan book is not even new information from the absolutely most reliable source, either, even if it is substantial. See Richard Clarke's many testimonials against BushCo. No one was better equipped to outline the failures to prevent the terrorist attacks or the preemptive decision to invade Iraq. This guy is bona fide. He served as the terrorism czar under every president since Reagan.
My faith in my country will be restored if Bush and the gang spend even one year in prison. I'd like more than that, but I understand how politics works all too well.- InetRoadkill, on 05/29/2008, -7/+19
You guys are all naive. Bush has MONTHS left in office. There is no point in pursuing legal action now.
Sorry, but no. I wouldn't care if Bush had 2 hours left in office. If he is a criminal, he should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law without exception. Surviving your term without getting impeached should in no way be an all-encompassing 'get out of jail free card'. Equal justice under law is supposed to be one of the pillars of the American justice system. No one, including Bush, is above the law. His open mockery and contempt for the judicial process combined with his abuse of power makes it even more imperative that he be brought to justice. He should not be allowed to set this kind of precedence.- dafragsta, on 05/29/2008, -2/+10Did you even ***** read the rest of my comment? Of course he should be prosecuted, but you realize they will not be able to nail him and Cheney simultaneously right? You know about presidential pardons right? Like the one Scooter Libby got?
- bsl4doc, on 05/29/2008, -4/+2You do know that Libby was not pardoned, and that he only had his sentence commuted, so he still has perjury on his criminal record, right? Right?
Yeah, that's what I thought...you make the rest of us liberals look very bad and stupid. - stizz, on 05/29/2008, -0/+10Libby has not been pardoned yet. YET.
Bush will wait till zero hour just like every president does.
Libby will be pardoned during Bush's last hours in office. - dafragsta, on 05/29/2008, -0/+6Libby WAS dealt time, and as the previous poster said, he'll be pardoned in the midnight hour. Bush did commute his sentence to parole. That is not justice. What you want is what I want, but I actually want them to spend time in the penal system. I don't want this to be a white collar political slap on the wrist. It would be nice to see a treason charge, but that's highly optimistic.

It's not the place of congress to probe into the personal life of any politician. Sure, perjury is a crime, but ALL CRIMES should be taken in context. Is it really fair to kick a man off his post for getting a goddamn blowjob and lying about it? That is extremely private. Does that extend to Larry Craig? Sure, if it's all consentual, but I still think that one is funny because no one forced him out. It was his own hypocrisy that crucified him in the eyes of his constituency and his political affiliation with the so-called social conservatives.

It's honestly frightening to see how ignorant some people are.
"Guantanimo what?"
This freaked me out: I was talking to some lady, telling her about the process of rendition, and she said she SUPPORTS it (after not knowing what it was and I told her)....wtf? She goes "Yea, throw they asses in jail and torture those mo'***** hah" I wanted to slap her. I told her how many are proven to be innocent and she said that's a price she's willing to pay. - fuzzynyanko, on 05/29/2008, -4/+3Terrorist attacks on the US and countries like London don't usually involve fighting. Random attacks like a subway getting gassed or even 9/11 are more common. Anyways, the USA is huge, and a terrorist attack can take out, at most, a few thousand people. If a country allows nuclear weapons to get to a terrorist and that person bombs the USA, our allies would join with us to kick their ass, whether we want them to or not. Oh wait... George W Bush hurt our relationship with our allies, so that's less likely. Still, that country will be a crater.

- shadowofapuddle, on 05/29/2008, -2/+29Not exactly accurate according to what I heard on CBC Radio, where they interviewed the author of the file.
When they say in this report that they had formally opened a "War Crimes" folder, it was more like an ordinary file folder that had the name "War Crimes" handwritten on it, and was used to file complaints about actions of troops and others. The FBI agents who were in Afghanistan and Iraq who witnessed suspect activity and filed reports about it would have their report put in this folder.
The higher-ups found out about the folder being labeled "War Crimes" and had it renamed to something less alarmist, and ordered the FBI to stop investigating any further Geneva violations saying that it wasn't their jurisdiction.
This doesn't mean war crimes were not committed, because it appears that they were. - utahnkid, on 05/29/2008, -2/+2"A majority of FBI employees who served at GTMO reported in
response to our survey that they never saw or heard about any of the
specific aggressive interrogation techniques listed in our survey.
However, over 200 FBI agents said they had observed or heard about
military interrogators using a variety of harsh interrogation techniques
on detainees. These techniques generally were not comparable to the
most egregious abuses that were observed at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.
Moreover, it appears that some but not all of these harsh interrogation
techniques were authorized under military policies in effect at GTMO.
The most commonly reported technique used by non-FBI
interrogators on detainees at GTMO was sleep deprivation or disruption.
Over 70 FBI employees had information regarding this technique. "Sleep
adjustment "was explicitly approved for use by the military at GTMO
under the policy approved by the Secretary of Defense on April 16, 2003.
Numerous FBI agents told the OIG that they witnessed the military's use
of a regimen known as the "frequent flyer program" to disrupt detainees'
sleep in an effort to lessen their resistance to questioning and to
undermine cell block relationships among detainees. Only a few FBI
agents participated in this program by requesting military officials to
subject particular detainees to frequent cell relocations."

- atb12688, on 05/29/2008, -6/+6Glad to see our government hasn't completely submitted to Cheney & Co. If I were Bush I'd be pissed off as hell about my legacy and my administration. I truly believe Bush has little to no control over what goes on. He is being used by Cheney and his friends. I believe that if Bush had chosen different people to be part of his government, a lot of the things that have gone on would never have happened. I dislike the Administration as much as the next guy, but I cannot blame Bush for all of this.

- pkonink, on 05/29/2008, -1/+4As the years have worn on, I find myself agreeing with you more and more. While I don't think it absolves him from any blame I tend to see Bush as Cheney/Rove/Rumsfeld/Wolfowitz's patsy. They feed him all kinds of ideas and push him in certain directions and he follows right along. His churlish pig-headedness (and I personally believe advancing mental disease such as alzheimers) has enabled these dangerously extremist neo-cons to take control of the nation and drive it into the ground.

Under the Bush administration, PEOPLE ARE TORTURED.
We operate a network of secret prisons around the world where we take "suspected terrorists", hog tie them in stress positions, pour water down their throats, threaten to kill their families, sexually abuse them, put them in isolation for 30+ hours, starve them, deprive them of sleep, and beat them. It is happening right NOW.
The fourth amendment has been gutted.
Due process is GONE.
All of your E-Mails and phone conversations are recorded.
There is a "Terrorist watch list" with over 9000000 names on it, including U.S. Senators, singers and writers.
The economy is in ruins and getting worse.
We are at war with a country that did nothing to us and DID NOT harbor terrorists and we're preparing for another one.
The administration has been bringing ***** prosecutions against Democratic officials in swing states and FIRES U.S. attorneys who don't cooperate.
Bush is helping McCain violate election funding laws.
And if that's not enough for you have a look at some of Bush's executive orders.

- Twenty, on 05/29/2008, -4/+16The next president is going to have a hell of a time dismantling what a monster of government the Bush administration has created here. No, it was not entirely Bush's fault, but the fault of many presidents over the course of the 20th century subscribing to big, ineffective, bureaucratic government. Most presidents, when they are elected, spend the first year or two adapting the executive branch to their agenda. How long will it take to dismantle years and years of this sort of ***** -- early fascism?
We need to defeat it at the root. Impeach Bush, Cheney, all of them.
Still, how much scrubbing will it take to rid the US Government of the stench of ineffective, bloated partisan politics?- BigFuzzyArchon, on 05/29/2008, -0/+2 the next president isn't going to do ***** and nothing is going to change
- Twenty, on 05/30/2008, -2/+1I used to think that too, until Obama came along. But now the faults to not lie with an incompetent president, but rather, a system that is far past broken.
- Arkons24, on 05/31/2008, -1/+1If you think Obama is going to change anything you're a fool.
- buckrogers1965, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1The scary part is how seductive taking up these reigns of power are. After all, when you become president and you have all that power and you want to do good things, it becomes tough not to use every bit of power you have to do good things.
"In place of a Dark Lord, you would have a queen... not dark but beautiful, and terrible as the dawn! Treacherous as the sea! All shall love me and despair." - Galadriel - Arkons24, on 05/30/2008, -1/+2I dugg you up for the first part. Impeaching dick and bush would be retarded though. Our government will unlikely ever be clean of them. We need to put the power back in the states hand, get rid of electoral colleges and start to make government effective on the local level. More districts, more representation. A larger senate and house will both be able to weed out corruption. With that many people running, Washington Outsiders will no longer be able to be shunned by the establishment.
- soulkitchen, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1How much scrubbing? Less than you think once we wake up. The French Monarchy never thought a revolution could happen until it did. The American people can only be pushed so far.
- smebbin, on 05/31/2008, -0/+0It will happen... Hitler is very proud of Bush, he learned well from Hitler's history books. Call me extreme, but if Bush were to have one more term... we would be reliving history.
- smebbin, on 05/31/2008, -0/+0Look at the national debt created during the 1st Bush administration and the 2nd Bush Administration... a huge spike. These are not republicans nor public servants, they are destroyers are freedom, america, capitalism, and sovereignty.
