FBI: Justifiable homicides at highest in more than a decade
usatoday.com — By Kevin Johnson, USA TODAY The number of justifiable homicides committed by police and private citizens has been rising in the past two years to their highest levels in more than a decade, reflecting a shoot-first philosophy in dealing with crime, say law enforcement analysts.

- professor357, on 10/15/2008, -0/+6Don't let yourself become a victim. Dialing 911 and depending on the cops arriving in time to save you is futile. The 911 call just tells them where to send the coroner and set up the crime scene tape.
You are your own "first responder" when you are attacked. The more people that take responsibility for their own safety, the better. - professor357, on 10/15/2008, -0/+6How many stories have you seen in the main stream media which report on the successful defensive action by a citizen?
Maybe the criminal element will be less likely to try their attacks if they know that law-abiding citizens with defensive weapons are ready, willing and able to prevent them from completing their illegal activity.
Note to the media: If you publicize the defensive use of weapons instead of decrying the number of legally owned weapons in the hands of the public, maybe the criminal element will find another line of work... so we don't have to take them out of the gene pool. - deathsythe, on 10/15/2008, -0/+3This is why I sleep with an 870 next to my bed and .357 in my nightstand.
A man's house is his castle. - dionysiuspetros, on 10/15/2008, -0/+7USAToday needs to get a clue:
"In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court in June carved out a right to individual gun ownership, ruling that the Second Amendment allows citizens to keep guns in their homes for self-defense"
Carved out a right???????????? IT'S BEEN THERE ALL THE TIME! - Christianptriot, on 10/15/2008, -0/+4The Supreme Court ruled, in a decision that stemmed from a case following the LA riots in 1994, that the police and law enforcement agencies are under NO specific obligation to protect any individual citizen - rather, their job is to maintain general civil order.
It is YOUR responsibility to provide for your own protection in your home, on the road, at work, shopping, etc., and NOT the government's.
If you do NOT retain the means to provide for your own protection, you are far more likely to suffer at the hands of criminals. If you live in a city where the government DENIES you the right to defend yourself, your family and your home, such as Chicago, and many Kalifornia cities, then I highly recommend you REMOVE those in political offices who deny you that right, or MOVE OUT.
It has been proven in state after state that when private citizens carry concealed firearms for their own protection CRIME RATES DROP. When you start seeing more chalk outlines in living rooms where bad guys got capped, you see more bad guys decide to move to places where they are much LESS likely to be shot in the commission of a crime - like Chicago, and Philadelphia. In 1998 the PA legislature passed Shall-Issue legislation making it legal to carry a concealed handgun, and that local police and sheriffs' office Shall Issue you a permit if there are no other barriers to your owning a firearm. BUT the legislature, fearing a rise in crime in Philly, exempted those citizens from the ability and capacity to legally carry a firearm for their own protection. The result? At the end of 1999, after 13 months of the new law being in effect, crime rates for the state dropped by as much as 26%, except in Philly - where the crime rate ROSE by as much as 34%, for rapes, murders and violent assaults.
Here is a pop-quiz for ya, that illustrates the situation: of the criminal, the victim and the police officer, which one is almost always LAST to arrive at the crime scene?? - Barbrady, on 10/15/2008, -0/+3Isn't it amazing that when law-abiding citizens are allowed to protect their homes (castle doctrine) and carry concealed, the number of dead bad guys goes up and the number of seriously injured or killed innocents goes down.
- irisheyes1169, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2"The number of justifiable homicides committed by police and private citizens has been rising in the past two years to their highest levels in more than a decade...."
Hell, that's a good thing! More citizens will be more inclined to protect their families and themselves instead of becoming victims of a crime. - bigot, on 10/16/2008, -0/+2Who was it that when asked why he carries a 45 everywhere he goes, answered "because they don't make a 46 and cops are to heavy to carry"? I think it was a Texas Ranger.
- KNinAZ, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1You will find violent crime has gone DOWN in most of the States that allow Concealed Carry while justifiable homicides rise. Finally the good guys are shooting back so WE ARE NOT the statistic! I carry every day, all day and almost everywhere. The old saw about "just give the criminal what he wants and he won't hurt you" was always non-sense. Obviously not started by a rape victim.
