- CoreyTamas, on 09/27/2008, -0/+2I realize you guys are going to think of this as something of a buzz-kill, but... people are still considered innocent until proven guilty. He's an alleged pedophile... not a convicted one. There is a difference.
Like I said... sorry to be a buzz-kill, but you gotta let justice take its proper course. - notanidiot, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1Off the streets is right, I actually used to frequently find Tony Alamo's fliers inserted under an entire parking lot's windshield wipers, not to mention strewn about the ground. They would fool you into reading about what seemed like an interesting subject, then it would turn to crap.
For example, one had a title insinuating that it was about society's suicide epidemic, but it turned around in the middle, referring to nonbelievers, who choose not to believe, and are therefore killing any chance at eternal life they had. Hint to Christians: If you choose to believe, its not really believing. If you don't believe, then pretending you do would probably just make God angry.
Not surprised about the child porn thing. People with such poor taste as to flier parking lots with Christian literary trickery are capable of anything, and even his name, Tony Alamo, sounds like a porn name.- CoreyTamas, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1"People with such poor taste as to flier parking lots with Christian literary trickery are capable of anything" ...you may want to take a moment and consider the *scale* of what you just said.
- notanidiot, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1Yeah, you're right, not capable of "anything," I suppose. Like, for example, getting a life. Not capable of that.

The self-righteous are usually, most often, hoping to mask their sins by acting pious and judgemental towards others.

- Inohavehalos, on 09/26/2008, -4/+20Don't hate me for saying this... but do atheists ever get caught doing this? I'm really asking--> I'm not implying this. I'm just curious... because it always ends up being either a priest, a politician, or just that weird drunken guy who beats his wife....
- badastronaut, on 09/26/2008, -22/+8Yes, they do. However you would never see it make the front page. (and if it did it wouldnt be irrelevantly labled athiest so digg can illogically bash athiests)
- shawn1122, on 09/26/2008, -6/+15I'm sure its happened, its just that there aren't as many people that are atheist as there are religious people. Also, this headline uses the fact that he is an evangelical to make him seem like a hyprocrite. It would be way less likely to see a headline like "Atheist arrested on child porn charges." In that case, they will usually ignore the personal beliefs of the person.
- mithrasinvictus, on 09/26/2008, -4/+8I'm sure they so and the reason they don't make the headlines is because they did not preach a holier-than-thou judgmental belief system.
read: Matthew 7:1-6 - empiric, on 09/26/2008, -4/+4Ah, yes. Digg is very big on anecdotal reasoning whenever it's anti-theism.
Show a study that shows -as a general statistical statement- Worldview X has more of an incidence of Crime Y than some baseline, and we'd have something meaningful to discuss.
Rather futile to attempt changing it though. Even when it's perfectly clear to the average "Digger" that their reasoning is fallacious and misleading, they'll just repeat it anyway. - HomeNucleonics, on 09/26/2008, -1/+4Of course there are Atheists that do this. I don't believe your religion (or lack of) changes your core personality. You can't generalize about any group of people because theres always going to be good and bad people in all of those groups.
- mohsenxp, on 09/26/2008, -2/+5Yes but if your an atheist you are not labelled as an atheist.
A: British guy kills son. He happens to be a Muslim -> MUSLIM MAN MURDERS son...
B: British guy kills son. He is Christian or an atheist (or anything that isn't Muslim) -> British guy kills son. - PhilLesh69, on 09/27/2008, -0/+2The problem is that the radically vocal religionists are usually not truly religious, it is a charade that they use to make themselves feel better about themselves and to make people believe they are really good people.
It's sort of like how all those politicians who were caught having gay sex or soliciting male pages were the most vocal against those very same things. Or how there are certain insecure men who like to go "gay bashing" or tell their friends "let's go out and beat up some *****" that actually harbor feelings for their male friends that make them feel uncomfortable. I had a friend like that, and it turns out he's now living with a guy he met at the gym. He finally got over his homophobia. Of course, he still tries to convince himself that he's a "real man" by picking fights in bars, but at least he came clean about his gay tendencies. We don't hate him just because we're straight, as long as he doesn't try to hit on us or anything.

- aussiejan, on 09/26/2008, -18/+41I disagree with you that there is no such thing as a good Christian. A Christian is a person who follows the teachings of Jesus Christ. Christ's main lesson was love - love of your friends, family and, yes, even your enemies. What people like this Alamo person or Sarah Palin with her extreme views or any of these hate-filled people are, I don't know, but they are not Christians.

- quisph, on 09/26/2008, -10/+7Oh, this must be the thread where we define away all "bad" Christians as not being "true" Christians. I love these.
- pbol01, on 09/26/2008, -9/+13Christianity was created in ca. 400 ad. in Turkey by a so called heathen(the eastern roman emperor). He chose the 4 gospels for the bible, the 4 that served him the most.

- pbol01, on 09/26/2008, -4/+12Name a man made concept that has killed more people than religion?
I'm not saying that religion is bad per say, but in general no good have come from it. Just look to America and Arabia in this time in age. Or Europe 500 years ago...
You never expect the Spanish inquisition... - 0o0Moylan0o0, on 09/26/2008, -2/+3pbol01

- deadbaby, on 09/26/2008, -2/+6What really gives the Christians a bad name is their gullible, close minded, nature. It turns them into people who are very easily misled and used as political tools. I have no problem with Christians but you guys gotta figure out how to get the politics out of your church and start applying some critical thinking and scrutiny to your leaders.

The only good christian is a dead christian. - CoreyTamas, on 09/27/2008, -1/+2"There is no such thing as a good christian."
This reminds me of a really excellent quote I heard on the radio once from a learned scholar. I wish I could remember his name, but what he said was very penetrating: These days, people only learn enough about history to disdain it. - CoreyTamas, on 09/27/2008, -1/+2Oh, and by the way...
If you say "Everyone in a particular demographic is bad", you're a bigot.
If you say "I'm 100% right and the other person is 100% wrong", you're repeating the words of people whom history has proven to be 100% wrong.
If you advocate that someone else should die for their beliefs, well... do I really have to say this part? - TheGuruStud, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1That's all good in theory, but the other side doesn't ever play fair. I think I should get to have a whack at slaughtering them in the very same manner. Violence is the only thing people understand. Reasoning and logic continually fails (otherwise we wouldn't be having this discussion).
- cowsgonemadd3, on 09/26/2008, -26/+6BC42 your pathetic. I hope you get to know Jesus before its too late. I feel so sorry for you .
- johngarcia, on 09/26/2008, -3/+9Seriously?!?!?! I'm a Christian and what you just said was totally against what Christ taught. You don't call someone pathetic and pity them. That's rude. That's not Christ-like at all.
- zyklon, on 09/26/2008, -1/+3You forgot your /sarcasm tags.
- PhilLesh69, on 09/27/2008, -0/+2cowsgonemadd3, is "before it's too late" going to happen in your lifetime?
I'm a catholic, not a "christian" as it is used today, because we catholics do not believe that god is going to call us all up to a party with Jesus in the clouds in the next few years.
You "christians" are all members of various money-making schemes known as CULTS. (not that the catholic church isn't also a money making scheme. I've always rejected tithing, or even going to church.) - cowsgonemadd3, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1Calling him a name was wrong. We all make mistakes.
But I dont see how pity is rude?
- FrankHope, on 09/26/2008, -3/+12Actually "Tony Alamo's" real name is Bernie LaZar Hoffman and he is Jewish. He was just pretending to be Christian Evangelist because he thought it was a good scam.
- JamesBrown, on 09/27/2008, -0/+4he's right it is a good scam. look how many pastors and preachers live in multi-million dollar homes, driving around in Mercedes and BMWs, all bought with the tithes of church members. And it's all tax free!
If that's not a scam, I don't know what is. Best part is that this particular scam is 100% legal. If I was a better public speaker I'd be all over that. - zeebo, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3That's funny, I thought that the main goal of evangelical christianity was to convert people to the faith. Now you're trying to say that he isn't a Christian? So is anyone who does bad things not a real Chrisitan?

- aquafire, on 09/26/2008, -8/+6bc42, please don't judge Christians by one man, or even a number of men who make sensationalist headlines in the news. In fact, if you judge Christianity at all, judge it by the life of Jesus, who modeled the way Christians are supposed to act.
"Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
If there is evil in this man's life, it will be exposed.- stinssd, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1Friend, respectfully, consider the context of that statement "Judge not lest ye be judged." It is because the same standard of judgement you use to judge someone else is the standard you will be judged by. It doesn't mean "don't judge at all" but "be consistent."

- breadfred, on 09/26/2008, -2/+5I am not a Christian, and never have been. I have to say however, that I do like the basic morals of the Christian religion. Not the abortion point of view, mind you, but the general 'do good' principle. I however do not need a God to tell me that. A community helps however in pursuing that goal, and as such, I support your position. It would have been even better if you would have become a better person by conversing with people who believe in 'doing good' and do not believe in a made-up being. Trust me, there are lots of them.

In case you needed it explained... The idea is that abortion is murder because it is a human being. To a Christian, it is going to seem like you are saying, "the Bible doesn't say anything about anal out side of marriage, so I guess it is cool." While clearly this would fall under the don't have sex until married rule. - breadfred, on 09/27/2008, -1/+1@HonestAbe: Just listen to their church leaders, the Pope, and who-ever else is crazy enough to think that they have a hotline to a mystical being. It would be ironic if God (may His tentacles bless you) would smite the pope down though for mis-portraying his laws... That would proof both him, the belief, and the atheists wrong.

Does anyone know just what was accomplished inTX? Might just be more of the same, and don't fall for it just because it's an evangelical, sex is under attack in this country. There are some considerations regarding age & a year or 2 makes a big difference. What about trying juveniles as adults, we seem to have some societal contradictions!- pintomp3, on 09/26/2008, -0/+18a year or 2 difference? he's 74. he wasn't boinking a 73 year old. ibtw, it's the evangelicals who are attacking sex.
- bluezinc, on 09/26/2008, -2/+9We're just now coming out from under the grip of the Christian Church.
You see, it's somewhat simple if you break it down. Why do the christians hate homosexuality? Why were they against science? Why were they against all non-religious art? Why did philosophy die out under the Christians?
Because the Romans LOVED all that stuff, that's why. The Romans loved science, art, poetry, philosophy, conquest, and the occasional man on man boink. However, the Romans didn't like the Christians, and fed them to lions. The Christians swore revenge on the Romans and, when they finally overturned the Roman Empire, it was an unofficial vow to hate everything the Romans stood for. The word "pagan" is a word used by Christians to describe the religion of the Romans and Greeks before them. Pagan means "country people" and denotes poor education and low class. Like if a new religion were to take over the Christian world now, they'd give Christianity a new, derogatory name like, "hickism" or "hillbillyanity" or something.
So, after the Christians took over, they burned a lot, and I mean a LOT of libraries. They burnt the library of Alexandria, set up by Alexander the Great as a tribute to his teacher, Aristotle. IT contained over 500,000 ancient scrolls, forever destroying ancient works of art, science, and literature. Of course, the Christians contest this claim and say it was really Caesar, but that's crap because we know from historical accounts that he only damaged the building by accident, thereby DID NOT destroy the library. Then they blame the Muslims and say that THEY did it, when, in fact, it was the Muslims who smuggled ancient scrolls out of the new Christian empire and set up the worlds first universities. They studied the works of Aristotle, Socrates, Plato, etc. The scrolls made their way up into China, where they were again studied and taught and had a hand in helping the Chinese figure out gunpowder. All of this was happening while the Christians were stuck in the dark ages because the Church persecuted and executed all of the "elites" aka "smart people".
Finally the scrolls come back home to Europe in the 1400's by way of Marco Polo's expedition. As soon as he brings the scrolls back and people read them, their minds start to shift. Thus it helped spark the Renaissance. The Renaissance overturned the Church's anti-science and anti-philosophy and anti-art policies, but homosexuality, sexuality, and living for life were still on the no-no list.
It stayed that way until the 20th century came about and the invention of the TV, automobile, and telephone made communication faster and easier than ever before. This meant that more people were able to speak to those they normally wouldn't. This meant the exchange of ideas grew exponentially faster. In such an environment, it's no wonder that soon people are going to start questioning the dogma they've grown up with.
And that brings us to this modern day, which I believe is smack in the middle of the second Renaissance. We are finally, truly getting out of the Dark Ages imposed over 1500 years ago.

- Shawn4168, on 09/26/2008, -3/+6Ok, I can see where you're coming from, but wanting to ban abortion isn't necessarily a religious viewpoint. Plenty of people, religious and nonreligious, think that murder is wrong. And since the medical community has failed to present a better definition of when life begins, conception seems like a pretty good milestone for that.
- pintomp3, on 09/26/2008, -2/+5actually it is a religious viewpoint. christianity is the only religion that defines life as beginning at conception. many muslims believe it is when the heart starts beating or when the bones form. many jews believe it is at birth. to define it according to the christian view is a violation of the separation of church and state. again if your personal belief is based on religion, fine, but don't force it on everyone else.
- cuervoman914, on 09/26/2008, -1/+3damned good point pintomp
- Shawn4168, on 09/27/2008, -1/+2Terrible point, actually. That's like saying that you can't make murder illegal, because murder is already forbidden in the 10 Commandments. Just because Christians believe that life begins at conception, doesn't mean that there's not also millions of atheists and agnostics that don't believe the same. I know plenty of nonreligious folk that are against abortion: http://www.godlessprolifers.org/home.html
- pintomp3, on 09/27/2008, -2/+1"That's like saying that you can't make murder illegal, because murder is already forbidden in the 10 Commandments" murder is universally condemned, not only by the bible. try again.

- Shawn4168, on 09/27/2008, -2/+3Hmm...that's strange, because looking through my comment history, I've never made a comment stereotyping Muslims (I live in the area with one of the highest Muslim populations in the US, and know plenty of decent people who adhere to that faith), never made a comment about denying gays equal rights (I support civil unions, but believe the issue needs to be decided by the states), never made a racist comment (any inferred racism from my comments is your problem, not mine), and never said a thing about the starbucks mermaid (in fact, I said those people who protest are whackjobs). Thanks for stereotyping me, though. I appreciate the supporting evidence for my statement.

- PhilLesh69, on 09/27/2008, -3/+1kelmaster1, you obviously just walk through life in a cloud of ingorance and bliss.
YES churches are tax exempt because of the First Amendment.
http://hushmoney.org/501c3-facts.htm
Most churches in America have organized as "501c3 tax-exempt religious organizations." This is a fairly recent trend that has only been going on for about fifty years. Churches were only added to section 501c3 of the tax code in 1954. We can thank Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson for that. Johnson was no ally of the church. As part of his political agenda, Johnson had it in mind to silence the church and eliminate the significant influence the church had always had on shaping "public policy."
Although Johnson proffered this as a "favor" to churches, the favor also came with strings attached (more like shackles). One need not look far to see the devastating effects 501c3 acceptance has had to the church, and the consequent restrictions placed upon any 501c3 church. 501c3 churches are prohibited from addressing, in any tangible way, the vital issues of the day.
Did the church ever need to seek permission from the government to be exempt from taxes? Were churches prior to 1954 taxable? No, churches have never been taxable. To be taxable a church would first need to be under the jurisdiction, and therefore under the taxing authority, of the government. The First Amendment clearly places the church outside the jurisdiction of the civil government: "Congress shall make NO LAW respecting an establishment of religion, nor prohibiting the free exercise thereof."
- jonjon737, on 09/26/2008, -1/+4what part of being investigated and arrested makes you think that the US harbors pedophiles?
- Wawin, on 09/26/2008, -0/+7I don´t think you Americans are particularly harboring pedophiles, I think that what´s happening is that you are one of the few countries that are actually hunting down pedophiles, therefore more of them get arrested and more make the news.

However - if the evidence does not prove it, then do not persecute.
I don't want us to chase down every whacked-out religious group, nor do I want us to be afraid to go after the ones that are doing evil acts upon fellow humans in the name of God.

Let me tell you, this man IS a real christian. The fact he commited such revolting acts does not in anyway undermine his 'faith'. His actions may contradict your own meaningless understanding of christianity, but do no think for a second this man's habbits were incompatible with his subjective faith.
And "The Media" also loves stories about celebrities, politicians and police chiefs doing similar things but they never seem to creep up as much do they? What really makes me sick is he tried to "resurrect" his wife for at least 6 months postmortem, not to mention the charges against him today, which in fairness he has not been proven guilty for so far.
- rdnkjdi, on 09/26/2008, -2/+37I guess I'm what you'd call a religious person...even though I no longer attend church on a regular basis.
I witnessed
A.) Bus driver, sunday school teacher & preacher, who, as it turns out, raped his daughter a few years prior to coming to our church. He was a registered sex offender, and had worked with children. The pastor and congregation was made aware of the situation, and he was no longer allowed to work with the kids.
B.) His son, another teacher & bus driver who was in his mid 20's had a year long affair with a 14-15 year old on his bus route. The guy was married & had kids. Church refused to report it to the cops, so I did. Guess who the bad guy was?
C.) Found out the preacher's kid was a gay porn star. Ya ya, nothing wrong w porn or gay's, still...both + preacher's kid? Something going on there...

Anyway...for those out there who mock religion, you have good reason to. There are lots of religious people out there who do crap like this and use religion as a crutch. For those of you who point your finger at the media and cry foul, get religion cleaned up and you won't have to keep defending yourself. Youre not a religeous perosn if youre only using it as a crutch. It's unfair to frame them in a loose/loose manner.- rdnkjdi, on 09/26/2008, -0/+8People use it as a crutch, a baseball bat, a sex toy, an ego booster, and on very rare occasions, an enabler (as it was meant to be used.) Those are just my observations based on being in church for the first twenty years of my life. I have witnessed very real, genuine Christianity. I have seen it literally change who people are. But for every positive story, I can give you a half a dozen negative ones. You are correct, I frame it as I see it, the bad being the general the good being the exception.
Again, all this based on my experience. http://therandomcynic.blogspot.com/2008/08/take-go ... - urbandistrict, on 09/26/2008, -0/+5Religion is precisely that...a crutch.
I would love to hear a rational argument on why you think it's not. You would be naive to think otherwise.
It's been my experience that people faithful to the fable tend to reference biblical quotes to explain their actions. Sounds like a crutch to me.
A belief in a supernatural power that controls human destiny for the greater good. A second chance to live among lost loved ones in a wondrous paradise. A code of conduct for moral behavior based on it's teachings.
So you better not shout, you better not cry, you better not fret I am telling you why.... - urbandistrict, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3rdnkjdi is 100% right. Dugg.
- rdnkjdi, on 09/26/2008, -1/+2James 1:27: "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world."
I disagree with the blanket statement that religion IS a crutch, I 100% agree with the statement that it is normally used that way. It boils down to the fact that your actions dictate your beliefs. Many people believe in religion because they are afraid of life, they are afraid of being totally responsible for their actions, and they are afraid of having to give account, so they need an out.
For some, this out is believing in no God. For others, this out is believing in a God who excuses anything. For others, it is believing that God hates everything they don't do.

You'd be left with reasonable small neighborhood churches that are supported by their own followers and don't take up umpteen city blocks for their compound that puts a community college or golf course to shame.
I kind of went off topic there but the point is that churches are a business in the US and are thus infiltrated by criminals and general scum on the take. - PhilLesh69, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3I've always noticed that the people who take their kids to church every sunday tend to be the least decent people overall. It's almost like they believe they don't have to live a moral and decent life, or give a ***** about anyone or anything, because they get dressed up every sunday morning and kneel-sit-stand for an hour, sing a song about how jesus loves them, and then have donuts out in front of the church, and then yelling at the kids to get in the ***** car right now, because nascar or football is gonna be on the TV in 25 minutes, and if I miss the kickoff or the pace car, daddy's going to whip your asses until they glow red!!!

At best churches are non-profit recreation and mental health facilities. The difference between a good pastor and a good thrapist is that the latter belongs to a professional organzation that enforces standards that protect those who are served.
