- DeadliestSnatch, on 11/07/2009, -11/+487Too selfish to start having children? I'm more concerned with the people too stupid to stop.

“Where today in European culture with its consumerism and instant gratification – because you’re worth it – where will you find space for the concept of sacrifice for the sake of generations not yet born?"
Here's a question: where the ***** will these children be able to live? we're already overpopulated as is, we don't need everyone having a dozen kids like back in the dark ages, there is just no way to support them. i don't hate kids, but i know it's not financially responsible to be using a vagina like a damn clown car. my wife and i know it's not even a possibility to have kids anytime soon, just due to not being able to pay for everything necessary in raising a child. we're sure as ***** not going to be a burden of the state like some ***** that have kids just for a bigger welfare check. - HeDiggMe, on 11/07/2009, -2/+278You guys are welcome to take Octomom and Kate Gosselin if you need a boost.
- bugsy187, on 11/07/2009, -17/+261Are Europeans being selfish or is a religious leader being stupid and myopic?
- milsorgn, on 11/07/2009, -21/+238There are too many humans as it is, ***** religion for trying to egg people on to procreation. ***** that *****.
- johnwayne1, on 11/08/2009, -8/+145We have a shortage of resources with today's population. WTF do we need more people for.
- catalysis, on 11/08/2009, -12/+139Having kids is inherently selfish. I'm not saying it's bad, but people have kids because they want kids for themselves. It's not like they are bestowing a gift on mankind out of selfless sacrifice or something.
- skidork, on 11/08/2009, -5/+119Nookie.
Nukie is what the US did to the Japs. - skidork, on 11/08/2009, -1/+83They can take all of our reality TV stars while they're at it. We don't want 'em.
- EdgarVerona, on 11/08/2009, -10/+86That's some serious fear-mongering. "Europe is dying"? Give me a break. If Europe's population is declining to more sustainable levels, perhaps that's a model that the whole world should be following for the sake of our continued existence as a species.
Of course, to understand the concept of overpopulation, you'd have to be willing to listen to scientific opinions and analysis. I get the feeling that the article's subject isn't terribly interested in such subjects. - Dustin00, on 11/08/2009, -10/+80Having children: very selfish.
Not having children: just as selfish.
Adopting children: not selfish. - Langford, on 11/08/2009, -4/+69Wouldn't the more selfish thing be to have children without thinking of the consequences?
- frsrblch, on 11/08/2009, -8/+62The leader of Britain's Jewish community? I wonder what the world's population was when he was relevant...
- Ninh, on 11/08/2009, -4/+53What is he doing in Britain when Israel is getting out-procreated by the Palestinians?
- BREZZZ, on 11/08/2009, -3/+52You're part of the problem buddy, running around ***** everything you see.
- Markdgod7, on 11/08/2009, -6/+45Overpopulation is the world's biggest problem. This is a good thing.
- bodiez, on 11/08/2009, -4/+43"I think ideally I'd like to get it down to...40,000 people in the world. Superbowl comes around? Everyone can go. Heck, you could probably play or at least hold one of the first down marker sticks."
-Bill Burr - DeskFlyer, on 11/08/2009, -2/+38Whoa. Dugg your comment and it went directly from +40 to +50. I HAVE THE POWER
- philomatic, on 11/08/2009, -5/+36I totally agree and don't plan on having kids. Most people I talk to about the issue never even really considered not having kids as a serious option... And then there's the religious ppl who seem to want more and more kids regardless of how much free time / money they have
- piieerrrree, on 11/08/2009, -2/+31Huh, I wasn't aware that Hong had 830 billion citizens. Good to know!
- Truedirt, on 11/07/2009, -11/+40Having kids as a religious duty? I don't see that helping at all.
Simple advice: more nukie and less snobbism. - Gemfinder, on 11/08/2009, -4/+33Or…maybe the Brits have come to the realization that it's a good idea to limit procreation if you live on an island. Even a big island like Great Britain. Fewer people = more resources for everyone.
- jrm125, on 11/08/2009, -9/+37Good...I'd say we have enough people as it is.

http://www.metacafe.com/watch/2682654/idiocracy_op ... - videographer, on 11/08/2009, -6/+33>...the poorest and least educated, notice how religion can often can be involved here as well, will still have the most children.<
I've said it before, and I'll say it again:
The first 15 minutes of the movie "Idiocracy" are prophecy. - thelastbushman, on 11/08/2009, -2/+2895% of your population is also of one ethnicity... No wonder you get along so well.
- rushover, on 11/08/2009, -4/+29If people don't want to have kids then let them be. How is this even an issue?
- depro9, on 11/08/2009, -16/+41***** overpopulation & ***** this moron!
- smashTasker, on 11/08/2009, -6/+30Bah, religion. Who needs it?
- kaidovak, on 11/08/2009, -0/+24Unless you do it for the publicity.
- SpazAttack5000, on 11/08/2009, -3/+27What if Atheists started popping out loads of babies? I bet that would shut him up in a hurry.
- dizzydigg, on 11/08/2009, -5/+29Sometimes, I secretly think eugenics is a good thing. ***** the Nazis for being retarded ***** that gave the concept a bad image.
...Either way stupid people should not continue to breed or humanity is screwed long term. Its funny that educated secular folks choose not to have kids because they know whats involved in raising them right and uneducated superstitious religious fools pop them out left and right and raise more superstitious uneducated bastards. - norman619, on 11/08/2009, -4/+26The poor nations are the ones who are experiencing over population problems not nations like the UK which are developed and have a fairly well educated population. The population growth rate for most western developed nations has been either flat or in the negative for a very long time now. The more educated a person is the more likely they are to put off having children. They also limit how many children they have when they do have them. It is the poor and uneducated who tend to have children early and often.
- furburglar, on 11/08/2009, -3/+25Having a child is selfless:
- A great deal of personal sacrifice goes into raising a child. I am only now beginning to understand how much my parents gave up to raise my brother and me. It's unlike anything else in the universe. In turn, my kids have no idea how much I've given up to raise them, and that I would die for them without hesitation if the situation called for it. They won't know until they have children of their own (which I do hope they DECIDE to do).
Having a child is selfish:
- This is a bit of a stretch, but yeah, you can say that for many, it's part of their vision, their lifestyle fulfillment. Or in an old-school way, it's a way to preserve your genes, your name, strengthen the clan, etc.
Having no children is selfless:
- I know several people that feel that having children is an impossible obstacle to their higher calling, for whatever reason. In some cases, what they do is a tremendous gift to their community. I also know some people that simply feel they'd be terrible parents due to their upbringing. This is sad, I think everyone can transcend their upbringing, but it's a personal choice and who the ***** am I to judge.
Having no children is selfish:
- Some people are just too self-absorbed and don't want the responsibility. It is true that there is an epidemic of self-absorption in the West. We are predominantly a culture of entitled brats. Just travel in Asia - you can go for months without seeing a single temper tantrum - that behavior would literally appear insane, or just be ignored (unlike here, where everyone mutters about how much better a parent they think they are).
The point to all this is, anyone judging these groups based on selfishness OR selflessness is a misinformed idiot. It's a ***** Glenn Beck thing to do, to create this artificial divide between groups, glorifying one half while demonizing the other. And, surprise, surprise, guess which half they're in. People, you have no idea what's behind anyone's decision until they explain it to you. Until then, shut the ***** up. - transapien, on 11/08/2009, -2/+23Adopting children just lets other people be twice as selfish. It actually works out perfectly with your figures. Other person 2 you 0.
- EdgarVerona, on 11/08/2009, -4/+24Agreed: especially when we already have too many humans on the planet. Unless extraterrestrial colonization becomes a viable option, the old views on procreation are detrimental to our continued existence as a species.
- catalysis, on 11/08/2009, -1/+21I'm just saying people typically have kids because they want a family. People don't even want to pay taxes and now I'm supposed to believe everyone is having babies for nothing more than the benefit of society? Families and kids are great and most people have them because they want them for themselves. Lets not kid ourselves here.
- otbeverly, on 11/08/2009, -0/+20Idiocracy ... it's got electrolytes
- transapien, on 11/08/2009, -5/+24The problem with your logic is that the poorest and least educated, notice how religion can often can be involved here as well, will still have the most children. People who are most educated and modern take precautions. The vitality of life is being lived but the longevity of life is being sacrificed. It's sad to think the best will loose to their own sense of satisfaction.
- anotherjack, on 11/08/2009, -1/+19Yeah. Women are "too selfish" to have 10 children. It's a "miracle" if you do see a woman like that. Yeah. Miracle. nothing to do with what is good for a woman's body, or having enough kids as you can feed and no more. Can't be education and intelligence and compassion for women and children, and good health care. The scripture is "be fruitful and multiply" yes. True. Don't see the bit about "and have no choice about when and where and with who and how many."
- piieerrrree, on 11/08/2009, -3/+21I don't know whether to digg this article so it gets more exposure, or to bury it for its narrow-mindedness...
- Apex3, on 11/08/2009, -4/+22How is that being selfish? Maybe they don't because they'd rather have the money, but that's not selfish, you can't be selfish for caring about yourself over something that doesn't even exist. I'd say this is a good thing. Overpopulation is inevitable, if people start having less kids it can only help. We complain that People are having too many kids in Africa, and then we complain because people aren't having enough kids in Europe, what gives?
And as mentioned, having kids IS being selfish, you're doing it for yourself and yourself alone(and I suppose your spouse). Now there isn't anything wrong with it, we're programmed to do it, but that's what it boils down to. - TheAirLoom, on 11/08/2009, -4/+22Yeah, we're really jealous for countries like the U.S.A. where every ***** starts producing babies at 13.
- bjornski, on 11/08/2009, -1/+18Unsustainable doesn't mean that we have to be living shoulder to shoulder in the desert to be "overpopulated".
- DigitalisAkujin, on 11/08/2009, -0/+17Having a child is an asset in rural agrarian societies but a liability in urban cities.
- nemomarlin, on 11/08/2009, -3/+20having a lot of children so you can fit into your religious community----> Selfish.
- bubba9999, on 11/08/2009, -11/+28Europeans: One of our great think tanks created a documentary about this effect called "Idiocracy".
- rotundo, on 11/08/2009, -1/+18Well, I mean on some level that's basically the definition of selfish, isn't it? I don't intend that as a jab, since I am in the same boat. But yeah, I admit I am selfish: I want to spent my time doing things that are important to me and raising kids isn't one of those things at the moment.
Most parents are selfish too: they have kids because they want them, not because they're gifting the world or anything like that. Raising a kid is a path that eventually involves a hefty amount of self-sacrifice (quite often to the parents unexpected chagrin) but it usually starts as a selfish choice.
Overall, I don't think being considerately selfish is a bad thing anyway. It's only when we are inconsiderate to others that we cause problems. And you can be considerate or inconsiderate with kids or without. -
