- Cyguration, on 03/16/2009, -8/+137Nice.
Soon, we shall simply call them Men. - rainwolf1031, on 03/16/2009, -1/+118"Your Neutralness, it's a beige alert!"
- MegaMonkie, on 03/16/2009, -3/+106Dad, Parental Unit 2, can I head over to my friends house?
- Markab3, on 03/16/2009, -11/+110Comrade?
- orangefly, on 03/16/2009, -12/+110why are women so ashamed of being women....i never understood why they threw a hissy fit over stewardess when a male "attendant" is a steward....
- Bagos1, on 03/16/2009, -22/+101This kind of nonsense has been going on for several years....can't even use the word mom or dad anymore.
http://www.newswithviews.com/NWV-News/news53.htm - LunusMaximus, on 03/16/2009, -20/+83Why is almost all the legislation that comes out of Europe completely asinine?
- inactive, on 03/16/2009, -1/+62What a waste of resources.
And also :
"The booklet also admits that "no gender-neutral term has been successfully proposed" to replace 'waiter' and 'waitress', allowing parliamentarians to use these words in a restaurant or café."
How about server? - Lucas123, on 03/16/2009, -5/+65Thank goodness. This hot issue has been keeping me up at nights. Now, if we could only get rid of Mister.
- NeilVickers, on 03/16/2009, -1/+57That's 'Parental Unit 1' and 'Parental Unit A'! Don't you go implying hierarchy with your order-ist language!
- inactive, on 03/16/2009, -5/+55This is absurd, didn't realize how bad it was becoming in the EU.
What are kids supposed to say, "Parental figure, can I have a glass of milk?" - johnwoo32, on 03/16/2009, -3/+50Hitting on married women just got a little harder.
- AlyxVance, on 03/16/2009, -4/+45wow. this is really ridiculous. These are respectful terms, get over it.
- inactive, on 03/16/2009, -2/+41Considering that site also has links to "Saying NO to vaccines", I highly doubt the reliability of it's sources, especially if it can't get basic science right.
- mhanley, on 03/16/2009, -2/+41The EU is not alone in that club. There is plenty of asinine legislation coming out of the US as well.
- BooLag, on 04/23/2009, -1/+39Negative, child, you still have outstanding duties towards your educational facilities.
- forevernomad, on 03/16/2009, -3/+40Did you not read the article, you can't use miss :)
- cpsutcliffe, on 03/16/2009, -2/+38Misleading title, the feminine titles have been banned within the European Parliament itself, they haven't banned the titles throughout Europe.
- DAVENP0RT, on 03/16/2009, -5/+38I don't understand this PC *****. Do women get angry when they're referred to as Miss or Mrs? Is it offensive to be considered a woman nowadays?
- AlyxVance, on 03/16/2009, -3/+34When people start getting offended by the meaning of a word, you know they have problems.
- CedEx, on 03/16/2009, -0/+31Then the parents will reply...
"Offspring unit, it is not 'can I have', it is 'may I have', and yes, you may have a glass of milk." - Rivfader, on 03/16/2009, -4/+34What kind of hippy pc bullpiss is this?
- trogdor282, on 03/16/2009, -1/+30meatbag
- Chak2007, on 03/16/2009, -0/+29finally a Futurama reference!
"What makes a man turn neutral? Lust for gold? Power? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?" - forevernomad, on 03/16/2009, -4/+31You accidentally the whole fail?
- factsahoy, on 03/16/2009, -1/+26EXACTLY. Not to mention that "steward" or "stewardess" is a term that commands respect, as this person is responsible for the well being of someone or something. WTF is a "flight attendant"? An attendant is no longer in charge, but merely attached as an accessory.
The people arguing for this ***** are actually denigrating themselves and others. - acdcfanbill, on 03/16/2009, -5/+29So why don't they just use Ms. ?
- igyigyigy, on 03/16/2009, -0/+24If I don't survive, tell my wife 'Hello'
- DrDragun, on 03/16/2009, -0/+23Neutral President: All I know is my gut says 'maybe'.
- StormyAaron, on 03/16/2009, -3/+26Double plus good this is.
/s - acdcfanbill, on 03/16/2009, -0/+22As far as I am aware, Ms. refers to women where married status doesn't matter or is unknown.
Perhaps I have been using it incorrectly for years and not knowing. - CaptMonkey, on 03/16/2009, -1/+22How about letting people make up their own minds? If society deems the terms Mrs. and Miss as well as gender-specific job titles to be outdated, they'll stop using them. Why make laws about it?
- philkav, on 03/16/2009, -0/+21Once accomplished, you and a chosen peer may participate in a selection of cardiovascular activities. I suggest a brief perambulation. You must terminate the session before sunset
- DeathRay2K, on 03/16/2009, -0/+21AlyxVance, no there aren't; you have been lied to.
- chanop, on 03/16/2009, -2/+23He was elected in the US and the UK? He's ***** amazing!
- lumaga, on 03/16/2009, -16/+36Since when did Europe really have free speech?
- beck5, on 03/16/2009, -5/+25Are they trying to make it easy for the Daily Mail?!?
- inactive, on 03/16/2009, -13/+33This is a proposition, just like an American law bill.
IT'S NOT OFFICIAL POLICY. Read the ***** article.
As such, most of the comments in this thread makes it painfully evident that Americans don't know what the ***** is happening in the world, not because of lack of information, but because of a lack of basic reading comprehension skills. - inactive, on 03/16/2009, -6/+25idiots
- jrlambs, on 03/16/2009, -1/+19I guess the women want to be called Sir then? I would have thought this would be more insulting.
- StrangeFamous, on 03/16/2009, -3/+21The issue is that a woman's title is defined according to whether or not she's married.
Mr. is used for all men, in the same way that Ms. is used for all women.
But the whole Miss vs. Mrs. thing is all dependent on marriage status.
An outright ban on language isn't exactly the best way to encourage social change, however. - CoD4, on 03/16/2009, -4/+21europe is ahead in public surveillance as well, ain't it, ain't it??
- mickstephenson, on 03/16/2009, -7/+23Kids will say what they always say. This is just advice given to politicians on the language they should use. You don't have to listen, kids don't have to listen just politicians.
Also I'm pretty sure if politicians don't pay much attention the repercussions will not be severe. This is just as newspapers have self imposed language guidelines.
This is just trying to turn something quite mundane into a "political correctness gone mad!" story that sells papers to the masses, who love this *****. - Myonosken, on 03/16/2009, -7/+23Free speech isn't a written European law.
- Samurai77, on 03/16/2009, -5/+21And WTF is she doing out da kitchen!
- 4NDr01D, on 03/16/2009, -1/+16404
- inactive, on 03/16/2009, -3/+17Compare your silly article on a silly website with this one : http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howabou ...
See, father day's CARDS got banned BY SOME TEACHERS (not the EU, not the Scotland, not the school administration) but the ban was to be PC toward some kids without fathers, and mostly adopted by teachers with classes that they knew had a lot of kids without a nuclear family, and in that respect, they probably did the right thing.
Big difference between this and "banning the word mom and dad"
Try to get your head out of your arse, and see that there is other ways than the American way out there. - LonesomeFighter, on 03/16/2009, -1/+15Since my boss, the US Army, forces me to have vaccines and I went the entire winter in Vermont without getting sick once, I will say vaccines are worth it.
I'm also recommended to gizz in a cup at a sperm bank before deploying if I want normal kids in life, but that is a different story altogether. - asnider, on 03/16/2009, -1/+14They can come up with all of these gender-neutral terms but can't think of one to replace "waiter" and "waitress?" How about "server?" That seems to be the common term used in Canada---it applies to male and female wait staff, and it describes the job accurately; their job is to serve you during your meal, so they are a server.
Having said that, I think this is all pretty ridiculous. I'm all for gender-neutral language in most situations, but to actually pass legislation forbidding politicians from using these terms is asinine. Trying to use more politically-correct language is fine by me, but forcing it on people isn't. -
