Escaping the Amish
fourhourworkweek.com — "I was so miserable in the Amish culture that I believed God would understand that my motives were good. In the end, I didn ’t have the guts to point the barrel straight at my head. Okay, I thought, I’ll just put the gun next to my cheek to see what it feels like. The instant I felt that cold hard steel, I suddenly realized that I wanted to live..."

- vanleurth, on 07/16/2008, -4/+2Wow. Cults and organized religion are the almost the same things. This is why I think the best business ever has always been the organized (catholic) church.
The model is pure perfection.;
1. They don't sell a product, they sell an idea or a believe.
2. They are the first multilevel marketers and the best at it. Because if you don't convert and market the business for free they were entitled to kill you (think europeans "discovering" america, stealing native indian's gold, slaving african and natives in the name of god).
3. They don't get taxed by the government.
4. They brainwash you so you feel good about belonging ... Apple user anyone?
5. And they took all niche markets (pagan religions, mythology, etc) and made it one religion.
6. They take any currency, including gold.
I say, if you have a business model that is similar to the organize church you are probably rich !! Cults suck
www.girlfriendpedia.com- shauncorleone, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2I agree. Man-made Global Warming is my favorite religion.
Seriously, do you think anyone cares about your generalized religion-bashing? Take it somewhere else, and leave the content of this particular story to the rest of us.- vanleurth, on 07/18/2008, -0/+0It is actually related to this story. Why? Well, Amish males seem to think that because they belong to the amish thay are allow to do whatever they want in the name of good behavior and/or cultural expectations. I'm not saying the principle of all these organized religions, spirituality, is wrong. I'm saying; things in excess become their opposite;
Pacifists become militants
freedom fighters become tyrants

I don't think you have read Tim's book. You should.

- digitalfan, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5This first-hand account gives a very different view of the Amish culture that most people don't see. Although this is just one person's view, she explains that rape/incest is common within the Amish culture, that women and children don't have rights, and physical and verbal abuse happen often. Excited for "Part 2"!
- jeranuon, on 07/16/2008, -0/+11Luckily, no Amish guy will bury this one...
- sirjorge, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3there needs to be a documentary about this stuff made
- Wronghead, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2There was a documentary called "The Devil's Playground."
In the end, it was pretty pro-Amish. It illuminated none of these accusations.
But who's to say? - dudeinhammock, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1If these accusations are true, I see an excellent magazine feature article here. Journalists take note!
