- ScrewedThePooch, on 05/06/2009, -1/+19How did the entire world become retarded in a week? We need to ban mass media as it is turning us all into imbecilic monkeys.
- inactive, on 05/06/2009, -0/+12Many of these measures aren't just extreme, they have nothing to do with actually preventing the spread of disease. A lot of them are based more on superstition than medical science.
- diggydougie, on 05/06/2009, -3/+13So everyone will think that extreme precautions are a waste of time from now on. Then when a truly dangerous virus does come along (and one eventually will) no one will do anything, and the virus will spread too fast and kill millions.
- freezerburn666, on 05/06/2009, -0/+10so why did China quarantine on a group of Canadian students again? those ***** nut jobs...
- JackSchittt, on 05/06/2009, -2/+10And if everybody didn't take these "ridiculous" steps and the swine flu really did become a pandemic, they'd all be criticized for "not doing enough".
- yarcod, on 05/06/2009, -0/+6Over two dozen dead already!? That's right at the same rate as chicken bone choking and bath tub drownings... and they're letting people out in public again!?!?! They should be locking them up in camps!
- alexsk8ca, on 05/06/2009, -0/+5I agree, I work at a drug store below a medical clinic and people come in everyday wearing masks and buying over 50 dollars in hand sanitizer! If anyone actually read labels they would probably feel pretty *****' stupid for paying 8 bucks for a little 100 ml bottle of isopropanal labeled as hand sanitizer when at the back of the store we sell 500ml bottles of the same ***** for 2 bucks. But I guess fear sells, even better then sex.
- stk198323, on 05/06/2009, -2/+7Yaye your first, want a cookie for that?
God damn seriously why people like you are even on digg? Or are you just so reject that the fact you can say your first makes you all happy and stuff? Grow a life man. - inactive, on 05/06/2009, -1/+5We are imbecilic monkeys. We always have been. It's got nothing to do with the media. We have this rational, logical facade, but as soon as ***** hits the fan, our baser instincts kick in and we abandon logic and reason for fear and superstition.
- avalenci, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4Maybe because the World Health Organization recomended against what Argentina a Cuba did ( besides they were completly pointless ... you can go from Mexico City to Buenos Aires via Dallas/ NY/ Miami / Toronto / Panama City / etc )
- inactive, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4It's a joke until the Swine-zomb-pocalypse begins, and you can't laugh when you're a zombie.
- Greenhouse568, on 05/06/2009, -2/+5Once again....it is just the flu.
If you thought it was going to be worse than that, you are an idiot. - yarcod, on 05/06/2009, -0/+3The mainstream media is the boy who cried wolf. That's my problem.
If there ever is a real pandemic, people will be so desensitized that they won't take any steps and many MANY more would die than needed. - gerrylazlo, on 05/06/2009, -0/+3Dugg for not saying ludacris.
- macmcraeart, on 05/06/2009, -0/+3they probably just wanted some of that Canadian coolness to wear off on them.
- Feenix566, on 05/06/2009, -0/+3Some of the comments in this thread are beyond retarded. It's almost like you want to keep being scared. Any strain of flu could mutate into a pandemic at any moment, and there's nothing we can do about it. There are thousands of strains of flu and they're everywhere. It's a risk we all live with every day. There's nothing we can do to stop it, so there's no point in worrying about it. I think some of the people commenting in this thread about how scared we all should be just don't want to admit they were wrong to get scared in the first place.
- JackSchittt, on 05/06/2009, -0/+2Slight problem with that.
By the time they "understand what it is, how it spreads, and what can be done to stop it" (a process that could take months and years) it could have very easily spread to the point of being uncontainable and triggered a worldwide pandemic.
You don't have months and years to "study" it. You have days, weeks at most. Which means you have to act in good faith based on very limited information. - Moses410, on 05/06/2009, -0/+2"In Egypt, officials have ordered the slaughter of 350,000 pigs, despite the fact that the current outbreak is transmitted from person-to-person rather than pig-to-person. That led the center-right Spanish newspaper El Mundo to comment, "Swine flu has served as a vector for something no one expected -- violence and intolerance."
I was actually just talking about this with my Econ teacher today who has lived in Egypt for a time, he speculates that it is not the government being naive thinking that killing the pigs will stop the outbreak but rather the social consequences of not doing anything. He says that they are doing these because of one of two reasons 1. To persecute the Christians. In Egypt, he told me, if you're Christian you own pig(s). So the government could be purposely persecuting on this front, forcing the destruction of part of their assets/livelihood. option 2. would be quite the opposite, in that if they didn't do anything and H1N1 broke out in Egypt many would blame the Christians because they are the ones who own pigs, so its a preemptive measure to try to ease any potential between Christians and the rest of the population / other religions. - Ebacherville, on 05/06/2009, -0/+2On average 98 people a DAY die from regular flu.. this PANDEMIC was less deadly than the standard flue.
Its all Hype.. - elmuerte17, on 05/06/2009, -0/+2Don't forget meteor strikes and winning the lottery.
- pantsperch, on 05/06/2009, -0/+2I am hoping all of this makes my plane to Puerto Vallarta in 2.5 weeks less full. Viva Mexico!
- Bobby1978, on 05/06/2009, -0/+2@PhantomRogue
Wrong.
'Understanding' this would've taken considerable time, time which might've cost dozens or hundreds of lives. Instead of sitting on their asses waiting for test results, the best and most prudent thing that could've been done *was* done. Flu is something that spreads extremely rapidly, especially in large congregations. Shutting down schools, where individuals with weaker immune systems would be most at risk, and hotels where travellers most back and forth between countries, was thus a prudent measure. Quarantining people was also very necessary to prevent further infections, since flu is known to pass easily between hosts. The kill rate of this virus was unknown, early reports from Mexico seemed to suggest it was high, especially with people in their prime dying. What was governments supposed to do? Wait and see? Ridiculous. - juanchopanza, on 05/06/2009, -0/+2Hog flu is a variant hitting the Dakotas and the Daytona Beach area. Early indications are that if you stay away from a Harley dealership and stop watching Orange County Choppers on TV you will be safe.
Bacon flu has infected thousands of Southerners. It is distinguished by a profound mid-morning lethargy and has been tentatively associated with consumption of large portions of bacon, eggs and grits for breakfast.
Porker flu produces porcine like bloating in adult males and girth enlargement in adult females. Most often contracted in Golden Corral, Barnhills and similar buffet style restaurants, but has been known to have infected homes in Iowa, Louisiana and Alberta.
Oinker flu is widespread, but centered mostly in Cities. Hardest hit have been New York City, Charlotte North Carolina, San Francisco, Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles and Seattle. Symptoms include, but are not limited to, extreme selfishness, frantic and frenetic acquisition of material goods, and gobbling up properties associated with a person's primary residence. This strain has infected the entertainment industry as well (see N. Cage, Madonna, et.al.).
Boar flu has been centered mostly in Washington D.C., but it is moving to regional capitols rapidly. Marked by aggressive behavior, a lack of analysis for decisions, and attempts to force one's will on others by threats or posturing, it also results in true boring behavior and endless ranting on about the righteousness of one's position vis-a-vis others. Combined with the Potomac Fever, this flu could be deadly, not only to the infected, but to large masses of undiagnosed victims. - TrichomeKid, on 05/06/2009, -0/+2You got that right.
- FredFredrickson, on 05/06/2009, -1/+3Is that how Republicans are born?
- spgass, on 05/07/2009, -0/+1Is it ridiculous to push a crosswalk button with your elbow because you don't want to touch it with your finger?
http://digg.com/health/Preventing_the_Swine_Flu_wi ... - yarcod, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1Not true.
I COULD get into government conspiracies with you... but I won't. I can't say I blame the people who come up with that crap though considering how far stuff like this is blown out of proportion.
But the first outbreak was mid-march. The first death (in mexico) was April 13th.
PRIOR to April 13th, on April 6th, United States CORPORATION Veratect publishes the alert "La Gloria: 'Strange' Respiratory Affects 60% of Local Population; Three Pediatric Deaths May be Associated with the Outbreak.
I don't have to explain to you the connections between media and the corporate world. But - The CDC issued its first alert on April 21st, covered by the AP. It was all over the news by April 23rd according to google trends.
But it wasn't until April 24th The Mexican Minister of Health confirmed Mexican cases of human infection by swine influenza and that it was believed that some of those cases had resulted in death.
Either way... definitely not "long before." - Lexxvs, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1Imagine what could be if there was really a hard pandemic –and I mean a real big one with thousands of dead around the world, to be conservative- people would go to the most extreme idiocy out of sheer fear. The magic of the media.
- BigT383, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1Actually people were freaking out in Mexico long before I heard anything about it from the media.
And do you really think that the CDC and WHO, which both saw swine flu as a serious threat, were saying that only because the media wanted them to? - Folksie, on 05/08/2009, -0/+1But don't you see we can't control you if you're not afraid! Take your pills and shut up, try not to think. And be very afraid.
- liuite, on 05/06/2009, -2/+3highly contagious disease that grabs headlines can affect rich or poor, healthy or sick. when it only affects people in places like Africa, then no one cares quite so much. there are lots of tropical diseases that the affluent countries in the colder climate pays little attention to.
- bonmot5, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1mother nature? Ha! It would be fine with me if it were "mother nature" doing the thinning out, it's the population control people that I'm concerned about.
- inactive, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1Well I dugg this article for mentioning that the Mexicans think the swine flu has peaked and is in decline, which would mean it was more short lived than bird flu or sars.
I would also like to take this opportunity to condemn in the strongest fashion the aggression and hatred of the ignorant people who antagonised the Mexicans and spoke about them in the way they did. Those ***** should know better, since they hold themselves in such high esteem. Wankers. - DrVic, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1whaaaaaa?
- DrVic, on 05/06/2009, -1/+2Oh noes! moon flu!
- Ebacherville, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1Yep, when I heard about this "PANDEMIC" flu bug first thing that came to my mind was the people storming out and hoarding food fuel ect.. look at how few hours it took in LA for the looting ect to start.. just a few hours and it was like the end of the world.
I worry more about the "sheeples" reaction, than the actual threat.
Some times I think the media and even government want the people to go psycho so they can roll the tanks on the streets.. Keep in mind the day the media went gonzo on the Swine flu was the "Photo Op" of air force one and fighter jets swooping through downtown new york.. coincidence.. ?? - lornefs, on 05/06/2009, -1/+2It's pretty ignorant to ignore the possibility.
I agree that we tend to overreact but given the certainty that we will face a deadly pandemic sooner or later it is better to be safe than sorry.
We do need to start better educating people though rather than let the media who don't seem to care do it.
Why would you possibly think that this couldn't have been much worse than it seems to be? - JackSchittt, on 05/06/2009, -2/+2The point of all the "ridiculous" things that people are doing is so that something like Swine Flu stays a non-issue The fact that this remained a largely non-issue can at least partially be attributed to these "ridiculous" steps.
Or would you rather them not go to such extremes and risk having the swine flu becoming another issue like the 1918 pandemic, so you can come here on Digg and claim the world governments "didn't do enough" to contain the problem? - cyclopssmiley, on 05/06/2009, -1/+1Ludacris got the swine flu? *****
- musicalplane, on 08/25/2009, -2/+2i'm sorry, this is a pretty pointless article cause no on wants an outbreak.
it seems a bit exaggerated in the media but no one wants to lose half their population. during avian flu hong kong incinerated a ton of chicken, so this is just a precaution
sars killed a few hundred people and ruined people's lungs. the precautions kept it from spreading further after china finally told everyone they were having an outbreak - Elranzer, on 05/06/2009, -1/+1It could have something to do with the "Bird Flu" scare that was overhyped to cause terror (which leads to Republican votes).
- PhantomRogue, on 05/06/2009, -2/+2@Bobby
"Authorities reacted the best way they could based on what little information they had"
No, what they should do is understand they have such little information and not make rash decisions. The key to containing anything is understanding what it is, how it spreads and what can be done to stop it. Not quarantine people, shut down schools and all these other wacky proposals for deaths that numbered in the 100's when the regular cold and flu kill thousands a year. - inactive, on 05/08/2009, -0/+0All we need now is a "Fox New's Flu".
- diggydougie, on 05/07/2009, -1/+1Both parties use fear as a tactic. They just use different fears. Democrats use health as a terror button. Big nanny government loves fearful citizens.
- Lexxvs, on 05/06/2009, -3/+2You should know -well, just a wish- that there are millions and millions of Coptic Christians in Egypt, the ones that can consume pig. No exception due there. Not only that, they are foolishly targeted for that. Muslims are not known for be very tolenrant people.
- zerobeat, on 05/06/2009, -1/+0B-b-b-but cytokine storm! What about all the young, healthy people that died?
- Bobby1978, on 05/06/2009, -3/+2With the exception of a few typically human discriminatory reactions, most of those so-called 'absurd' responses actually make sense when faced with an outbreak of an uncertain nature. Authorities reacted the best way they could based on what little information they had, so they can be forgiven for overreacting to an unpredictable phenomenon. After all, had they done little to nothing, and the outbreak did eventually turn out to be as deadly as 1918, hypocritical arm-chair Diggers here as well as the moronic author of that article would all demand for the heads of inept governments.
Stupid article, buried. - SolarGoddess, on 05/08/2009, -1/+0Amazing. A totally new "manufactured" deadly virus has been introduced into the population and most people act as if because we are Americans, it can't touch us.
Well I have some news for you. You, your wives, and your children WILL die if you fail to take precautions.
You will die of Swine Flu because it has already been planned that way.
Doctors have already formed triage teams within their hospitals to decide who will live and who will die. And this decision will be made totally arbitrarily.
We are currently in PHASE FIVE PANDEMIC ALERT. The next step is Phase Six. By then it will be too late as Phase Six means that millions are infected, dead, and dying.
This is no joke. I am protected and my family is safe. I will keep trying to wake up the few people who aren't taking this as some sort of joke.
Don't be a fool. Protect yourself because your government has no intention of helping you when the stuff hits the fan. -
