Environmental rules waived for US-Mexican border fence
iht.com — TUCSON, Arizona: Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff waived environmental rules to clear the way for a border fence to be constructed along the Mexican border. The move circumvented a series of laws, from the Endangered Species Act to the Federal Water Pollution Control Act and the National Environmental Policy Act...

- siszam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8If laws were enforced, companies were severely fined for hiring illegals and the government would stop rewarding illegals we wouldn't need a fence. You can sit at the border and watch illegals climb over. A fence only slows them down.

Slowing them down is at least something, especially if it impedes the transfer of WMDs over the border from Mexico - which is something that Osama bin Laden threatened to do in one of his recent nastygrams. - iliketv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@BigKitty
Osama bin Laden has many threats. We don't need to destroy our environment because of his scare-tactics.
Why don't we just use the money for the wall to hire more border security personnel? Instead of depending on a slab of concrete to stop terrorists, we have real intelligent people who can *see* that "transfer of WMDs" and do something about it.
I agree with siszam. - anonymoustroll, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2> Why don't we just use the money for the wall to hire more border security personnel?
Because people are inherently corrupt (which is why going after business that employ illegals will never work)... fences, properly built, are not.
You understand why the Nazi's called it the "final solution", right? Because smashing store fronts and stealing property wasn't enough to actually effect a change. It took the barrel of a gun, fences and furnaces to turn the tide of human will.... and they very nearly succeeded in their dastardly goal.
The moral? don't be afraid to learn a lesson from pure evil if they can be turned around employed without being perceived as inherently evil. - BigKitty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@iliketv,
You're right; although there are supposed to be little holes for small critters to go through, this could have a negative effect on the ability of larger animals to migrate in search of mates, food, territory, or whatever.
We sure do need more security personnel on the border. Problem is, the way things are now, if the border security personnel use deadly force to keep somebody out, THEY can get into serious trouble. The feds are afraid of political consequences if somebody shoots a poor agricultural worker, but what if it turns out to be someone carrying a suitcase nuke and heading for Sears Tower or Disney World or whatever?

- Sipie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The wall isn't going to help you. All it's going to do is slow down a flow of migrant workers that incidentally you need to take under paid jobs so that you can run your economy effectively while they look for other ways of getting round it. If someone wants to carry WMD into the country this wall isn't going to stop them.
