- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -25/+11I think we all know this, thanks
- antispammer, on 10/12/2007, -31/+10I think we all know you suck, thanks
- d3m3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Is the description "England are out of the world cup." an inside joke or something?
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4In America, it is hard to imagine exactly how big this thing is. I just got back from Germany, and I can say first hand that this event encompasses the lives of just about everyone except Americans. The celebrations in Berlin after Italy won the first round far surpassed those of the Red Sox winning the World Series. Quite frankly, I couldnt give a rat's ass about soccer. When I was over there, I pretened to be a fan of whichever team won. Italy won, I bought an Italian flag. Germany, I got a German flag. No Guanan flag for me though.
- d3m3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, Americans really couldn't care less. I'd watch the Womens US Open over the World cup any day.
- Jaybob404, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For some Americans like myself, it's one of the only sports worth watching. Except, of course, for all the crazy obscure ones like dominoes, pool, australian football, etc. I am disgraced with my country's view on sports. We steal the name of football so huge guys in tight pants can throw around an inflated thing and hug eachother.
- cpbrown, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19im so depressed
- Slummock, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16:'( It's not a nice feeling... I was really hoping for a England v Germany match for a final.
- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14Another wondeful example of how penalties are one of the worst options to decide a deadlocked game.
It's a sport of endurance. Let the players play. Two 45 minute halves followed by two fiften minute halves. Followed by two tens. Followed by two fives.
Anything but ***** penalty kicks. It's a horrid mix of skill and luck and not at all in the spirit of the game. - k-dogg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I thoroughly agree, Threepio.
I'm hardly a student of the game, but I've often thought they may as well flip a coin to break the tie.. - Hungryhaney, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4I was hoping to be able to witness the German team kicking the English all over the field too. Too bad Portugal proved to be the better team. :-)
- gloth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not fair to claim that penalty shootouts are just random luck. For one, some countries (Germany) seem to do a lot better than others (England). So, one could argue that certain styles of playing football give you a better chance of succeeding.
Then, looking at the shoot-outs that occur ed in this world cup in some detail: For Germany and Portugal, credit has to be given to the goalies, who did an outstanding job. One can't deny skill there. Which, again, indicated that it's not a random game of chance.
The other match that comes to mind was the one where Switzerland was defeated. The Swiss did not score a single goal in that shoot-out, so their elimination certainly feels like they have only themselves to blame, not such a thing as bad luck.
For a really dumb way to break a tie, look at American Football. The match goes into overtime, but possesion is decided by a coin toss. Obviously, the team winning that toss is in much better shape to win the match. - k-dogg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Gloth
Okay, well, perhaps it's not just dumb luck, but I would say that the Penalty Shot tie-break does put undue emphasis on one particular phase of the game over another-- i.e. the goalie play and sharp-shooting in a controlled situation. Not that it's not without merit (perhaps I went too far with my earlier comment), but you have to admit, it's not exactly 'football' that they're playing in that tie-break. It's some other game.
As for American football, I agree that the team that wins the (literal) coin-flip is in the driver's seat to win the game.. but then they do at least proceed to play the actual game, with all 11 players on the field. It might be a better comparison if American Football were to break ties by having the placekickers kick 50-yard field goals to conclude the game.
American College Football has a modified version where the teams each get at least one possession, starting from the 25 yard line, to try to score... not sure i'm crazy about that, but some here have started talking about implementing a similar system in the NFL.
- snlildude87, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11if brazil loses, today will be a bad day.
- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13I guess today's a bad day then eh..
and yeah.. this sucks. oh well.. england should have won. - Comatose51, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They lost to France of all teams... Brazil to France. WTF?! France is Brazil's kryptonite. Brazil got the same results in previous engagements against France.
- AhmedB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You just can't deny Zennidine Zedane's role, the Brazilians failed miserably to mark him!
- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13I guess today's a bad day then eh..
- underburn, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5I think the real story is Argentina beeing beaten on penalties... damn krauts.
- mzkw, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Yep, you're right. Argentina was the best team on this cup.
England played like crap since the first match, who cares if they're out. - aapicazo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0did you see the match Argentina vs Mexico? Mexico should have won that game, the Mexicans where playing way better, they just couldn't get that goal.
- mzkw, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Yep, you're right. Argentina was the best team on this cup.
- coldfusion1970, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Thats it, i dont care who wins the WC now.
We need to start getting ready for the European Championships.- Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Wayne Rooney was terrible in that game (it has to be said). He even missed the freaking ball when it rolled in front of him. Very disappointing.
- tsunamisteve, on 10/12/2007, -21/+7Not to be a grammar Nazi, but England IS out of the World Cup. One of my biggest pet peeves is people treating encompassing but single entities as plural.
- obeattie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8The members of the England Team ARE out of the World Cup?
Ok, I admit you have a point. I will always make sure to check my grammar carefully next time ;) - Bistromaths, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Actually, think about it like this. Which would you be more likely to say?:
1) England. Yes, they are out of the World Cup. Or,
2) England. Yes, it is out of the World Cup.
This use of England represents the nation and the people of England, not the landmass. Therefore should be fully justified in using plural 'are'.
P.S. Crushing blow to our English hopes and dreams. At least we won't be complaining about the heat and humidity next time. In South Africa. Oh...wait a sec. Hmmm. - d3m3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The United States are out of the world cup.
- pintong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4England are out, are it?
- phatfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"At least we won't be complaining about the heat and humidity next time. In South Africa. Oh...wait a sec. Hmmm."
If i remember rightly it is in South Africa during the winter, so it will be cold. Very cold sometimes. - ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"England are a good team; they have spirit and tenacity."
or
"England is a good team; it has spirit and tenacity."
The former is the right choice, obviously. The word 'England' is this context is referring to a group of people (the team) in the same way that the word 'they' would be used.
- obeattie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8The members of the England Team ARE out of the World Cup?
- RMoore08, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Brasil lost.... Stinkin Frenchies. I was so going for England and Brasil...
- uttles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11The worst part of that is that there will be no more pictures of topless and nearly topless brazillian women celebrating in the streets.
- Hungryhaney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@uttles
They are still around, having fun at the bars :-)
- dan2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Semi Predictions?
France > Portugal
Germany > Italy - spect3r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I hope Italy wins.
Poor England. Cant cheer the French...- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Italy v Portugal. That would be an awesome game!
- phatfish, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2"Italy v Portugal. That would be an awesome game!"
Ha! I would much rather see a France vs Germany final. Italy, Portugal and Argentina are the teams that turn football into a farce with their players always playing for yellow cards and free kicks by going over on the slightest touch; basically cheating.
One is down, thank god (Argentina). France will polish off Portugal no problem (they can't beat a bad England with 10 men without penalties), Germany will beat Italy and we will have a quality final with fair play and good football. Not a load of players throwing themselves on the ground.
- omniatlas, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4World Cup Finals: Germany vs. France
- Baloo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Who cares.. it is all about 2007... the Rugby World Cup
- those, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4or the cricket world cup
- uttles, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3England are? Didn't you people invent the damn language? lol
- meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yup, we did invent it and it's used correctly in this context in England.
If you can't learn to use it properly we might just ask for it back.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yup, we did invent it and it's used correctly in this context in England.
- Jamie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3It's about time, finally life can go back to normal!
- joshfraz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5England is out of the World Cup!!!! The Scots rejoice!!
- StatusQuoRules, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5We all know if they won, we'd never hear the end of it!
I'm glad they lost and I really enjoyed that, it'll shut em up for a while! Or we'll just hear about how they "just" won - fofusion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It'll be ohh we lost because of rooney and beckham bla bla bla.
They still havent shut up about 1960 something (think it was 66).
- StatusQuoRules, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5We all know if they won, we'd never hear the end of it!
- snypa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Italy are packin heat these days, but I'm sure It'll be France vs Germany.
England played terribly today, they missed too many open chances, and the penalty shootout was even more worse. You know it had to be Ronaldo to finish it off.
Surprised by Brazil's loss too, thought world cup 06 would be theirs, like it should be. - isolino, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Go Portugal!
- palmdoc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2must...practice....penaly kicks.....
- l00dpr3h, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I laughed out loud when Beckham and Rooney left the field. The end of Beckham, and another reason why Rooney was a bad choice for team England! Ha!
- nox327, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Thank god they are out, If you guys watch all the England games, you should have noticed that they played horribly, they should have been kicked out by Ecuador. And if you think differently than you have know clue about soccer or just don't want to acknowledge it.
I hope that Germany and Portugal will be in the Finals, and Germany winning it.- duxor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1You post at the end of a page of grammar Nazism and say "you have know clue". I hope you're flame retardant mate....
- sola, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Hmmm... I guess I have "know clue" then...
- nox327, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Oh you poor bastards, We are talking about soccer here and not about grammer. Oh I ***** hate people like you, you clearly don't know anything about soccer because if you did you would say something about soccer and not talk about grammer. Just remember, we are writing comments here, not essays.
- duxor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Calm down. I was just poking fun at your unfortunate mistake, after all the anal-retentive grammar debates going on with this story, it's nothing serious.
You're completely right too, England played abysmally all the way through the World Cup, even normally great players like Gerrard weren't up to their usual standard.
Also, it's spelt "grammar" ;-). - JurneyAhed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I doubt anyone needs to be told they don't know anything about 'soccer' by someone who calls it that.
- gehlm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3With the UK out, all I can say is... Zidane, Zidane, Zidane!
- fofusion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No you mean with England out.
Don't class Scotland and Wales part of the UK ;-)
- fofusion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No you mean with England out.
- tomi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Anybody see Serbia and Montenegro play? *****, that was awful.
Too bad England's out, I was thinking they'd stand a chance. =]- nox327, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah that was bad, It's the second time that that happened to them. In '98 they lost 6:0 against Holland. They sure did suck on this world cup.
It wasn't really fair for Argentina because they played against two countries at the same time (Serbia and Montenegro) get it, two countries :)
- nox327, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah that was bad, It's the second time that that happened to them. In '98 they lost 6:0 against Holland. They sure did suck on this world cup.
- StephenChow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ummmm.... So? Tell me when Italy is out of the cup.
- dan2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Won't have to wait long, the way Germany is playing and their quality with penalties.
- AhmedB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The only reason I want Italy to leave is because they don't play 'Fair Play', beating and hitting behind referree's back, acting, making things up..it will be a horrible final if Italy proceeds to the final! just like they kicked out the previous team when they faked a penalty in like the 91st minute...
- proudcanadian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I cant beleive Brazil is also out...
- pgouy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Bad day really. But Brazil deserved it. France (Zidane) played MUCH better... and they got it.
Sad day here in Brazil... :( - cyclo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes the retiring Zidane thorougly outclassed Ronaldo and Ronaldinho in that game...
- AhmedB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If I remember correctly they call Zidane the aritist or the painter in France, and today he REALLY was, great footwork and control on the ball and team leadership!
- pgouy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Bad day really. But Brazil deserved it. France (Zidane) played MUCH better... and they got it.
- jamesarice, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2it's a sad day... England did well to hold on though, after playing with just 10 men after the 60-something minute.
- haochi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Brazil didn't make it either, today's the BAD day.
- imightbewrong, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2just because Portugals goalie is incredible at Pks
- dan2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Not to take away anything from Portugal but a few of those English penalties were pathetic.
- princo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Aw, bummer
- psbpv3o, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4England is out of the world cup.
- loureiro97, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The title of the story should be : Portugal passed to the semifinals!
England losing against Portugal shouldn't be news to anyone :P - Archon810, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1For the fu** of it, here's a video I took today in a UK pub during this game while visiting Cambridge, UK: http://beerpla.net/2006/06/30/cambridge-uk-week-1/
- fofusion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Who seriously thought this wouldnt happen.
I'm so happy - PORTUGAL!!!! (I'm Scottish - Any time England play I root for the other team). I hate football but I always enjoy watching england loose.
Now to make my day I wanna see more english people cry.
I've nothing against the english but when they have millions of tv adverts with them being over cocky and like "we're going to win".
Sure confidence helps but when every second advert is related to the world cup its setting yourself too high a standard thats unrealistic.
Either way well done, they got further than I expected.
No doubt there will be a few negative diggs on this commment from English people just for having a different point of view.- AICkieran, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0That's because to us its patriotic, Hence allot he England flags you see everywhere, I don't like football at all, but i would rather see our country win than anyone else, And yes people get confident they're going to win, If we wasn't confident of that why bother even entering?
Also, I have nothing against the Scottish, But i wonder, If you don't like us, Why the ***** do you come here by the bus load. - fofusion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1as for coming here by the bus load.
Could say the same to you ;-)
You do have fair points and it makes sense. I would rather my country won too (even though I know it wont happen cos Scotland sucks at football).
Confidence is one thing but shoving it in others faces is another.
Also like I said I dont hate english people. - MoanRanger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Power to you !!!
I dislike england too, just the fact of their noses are too high in the air with their dam cup'o'tea ! zeegaaaarr!
! - fofusion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol.
:-D Made me laugh. - AICkieran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Fair play, And yeah i agree, the bus load isn't a one sided thing, It just deludes me. And yes, Shoving it in other peoples faces is wrong, But there's a blurry line between celebrating and being proud and shoving things in peoples faces
Thanks for the decent reply. - fofusion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sure. no problem ;-)
- AICkieran, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0That's because to us its patriotic, Hence allot he England flags you see everywhere, I don't like football at all, but i would rather see our country win than anyone else, And yes people get confident they're going to win, If we wasn't confident of that why bother even entering?
- SugarRay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm crying on the inside.... raise a pint to the fallen brethren!
- Conglomerate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good thing England lost because had they gone on to the finals and won they would be rubbing it in everyone faces like they did with the Ashes tournament in cricket vs Australia.
- fofusion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah.
Like they only started caring about it after they won.
- fofusion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah.
- ruimoura, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3PORTUGAL !!!
PORTUGAL !!!
PORTUGAL !!!
PORTUGAL !!!
Now the french, then someone in the final will do ... For those who are sayng Portugal are a bunch of fakers and chetaers i just say: get a life. Wors't than bad wining is bad loosing ... - JurneyAhed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I was so depressed
- but then Brasil lost!! Wahay! - NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe if England are teh learning grammar to make solid argument to the are ref they would still be playing.
- AICkieran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There was a comment about grammar in there somewhere?
- Fixe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We are in the semifinals 40 years later and we deserve it.
Let's get some revenge from France (euro2000) - amctoronca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hoorah Portugal! Good sportsmanship this time around! Keep it up!
Forca Portugal!- loureiro97, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1where are the portuguese??
- synchestric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did you notice how that article basically kept saying how lame a team Portugal is? Or that the match was totally unfair for England? Rooney kicked Ricardo Carvalho in the nuts and Ronaldo is a bastard for inciting the referee to punish him? Please.
- ziptnf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0GO ITALIA!!!!!
- Hemingrubbish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They won it! lol
Check out the new & improved
