Ellen Page, star of Juno, says: "Hitler is alive in Burma."
nytimes.com — "Hitler is alive in Burma ” reads the words scrawled on a cardboard sign, held aloft by a sweet-faced Ellen Page, the “Juno” star, in a 90-second human-rights public awareness message that began showing on video-sharing Web sites last week.

- mooseontheloose, on 05/10/2008, -6/+11God damn Ron Paul! How dare he respect the sovereignty of a foreign government?!
- masterm1nd, on 05/11/2008, -5/+36As much as I agree with that, there are some situations which would override the sovereignty of a foreign government
- OisinT, on 05/11/2008, -6/+4that is ***** ridiculous. what gives you the right to do that?
- masterm1nd, on 05/11/2008, -2/+5Mr. Moral Obligation.
- masterm1nd, on 05/11/2008, -3/+5If China declared it would kill ever last citizen one by one and actually went through with it, at a half billion dead people would you then agree with me?
- PhilLesh69, on 05/11/2008, -4/+1It is too bad that this wasn't the sentiment during the New Orleans disaster after hurrican Katrina.
Just imagine if Castro had airlifted aid into New Orleans, and sent rescue workers in to save the lives of those poor black people.
We should always advocate unilateralism, because when it is us doing it, it makes us feel strong and proud. We just need to refuse to consider that unilateralism isn't always in our interests, or not always us doing the unilateral action. - Blandyman, on 05/11/2008, -0/+5WOAH.
New Orleans is only black people? News to me.
Watch the 4-part Spike Lee documentary, When The Levees Broke. It's absolutely amazing. It's not on-topic, but since Katrina came up, I had to mention it. - masterm1nd, on 05/11/2008, -3/+2Phil, I'm just saying it's a great general guideline, but always and never are big words and nothing should ever be taken off the table. Do you think in your situation the benefits would outweigh the costs for Cuba? I'm just saying eventually if enough human lives are on the line the costs and benefits of respecting sovereignty at some point begin to change substantially and eventually one wrong becomes worse than another wrong.
- bphicke, on 05/11/2008, -2/+2Unilateralism, you neocons are ***** nuts.
- masterm1nd, on 05/12/2008, -3/+2What made you imply unilateralism? I made no mention to the subject. Take the China situation and apply it to the US. Would the only people who could save you have the right to do so?
- bphicke, on 05/12/2008, -2/+2Three posts up from me. PhilLesh69 was speaking the praises of unilateralism.
To address your question. No, I don't think we have the right. If the Chinese government is taking such actions, it is the responsibility of the Chinese people to resist. Only after such a resistance has taken place and the people have organized on their own to form their own government would I consider even debating offering assistance.
My reasons for this come from two places. First, I would not want other countries to come to my home because they think our rights are being violated. There is too much room for abuse. Second, if you act too soon, the citizens will not be able to coalesce naturally and they will be stuck with yet another puppet government that does not truly represent its people's best interests. - masterm1nd, on 05/12/2008, -3/+2Then who rightfully makes the rules for the world? Nothing, rightfully. If anything did, it would the US because it sort of already is and also because they're the biggest dog.
- bphicke, on 05/12/2008, -2/+2And that is the neocon mentality. Thinking it is somehow our job to police other countries and make sure everything is right in the world. The only world "rules" are those that are naturally formed by many independent nations acting in the best interests of their citizens. Not in the best interest of another nation's citizens.
- masterm1nd, on 05/12/2008, -3/+2I never said that or implied it. I said that's the way it is. I never said nor implied that we should be doing that, I'm not even referencing actions by the US or any other particular nation. I just think that in theory, there could be situations where sovereignty would have to be tossed out the window for what is right. I already told you multiple times that it's a great general guideline, and I agree with it for the most part an can't even think of a historical situation off the top of my head that would call for it. If the result of inaction is 100 times worse than the result of action that happens to go against the sovereignty of a nation, which has it's own negative consequences that are already factored into being 100 times better, you would have to violate the principle. I don't know how you interpret me so ***** up.
- bphicke, on 05/12/2008, -2/+2You said "Then who rightfully makes the rules for the world? Nothing, rightfully. If anything did, it would [be] the US because it sort of already is and also because they're the biggest dog."
My response was to the idea that the US as a dominant "world power" is somehow morally obligated to the citizens of foreign nations. It is my belief that a government is obligated to its citizens and its citizens only. When a government no longer does that, as you stated in your hypothetical situation with China, it would be the responsibility of the people to cast off that government and make a new one. It would not be the responsibility of the US, or France, or England, or any other country. - masterm1nd, on 05/12/2008, -2/+3"My response was to the idea that the US as a dominant "world power" is somehow morally obligated to the citizens of foreign nations"
Too bad I didn't bring up that idea. No one did until you just now. You're hyper defensive and aren't even digesting the conversation.
I agree 100% that the governments only duty is to it's citizens. However, I wouldn't let one little ***** head country nuke every last country in the world if I can easily do something about it. Granted, that probably won't happen, but you don't take it off the table because you have no idea what the future holds. I know for a fact there would be a number of improbable but possible situations where you would crack and agree with me if it's YOUR life on the line. - bphicke, on 05/12/2008, -2/+1"If anything did, it would the US because it sort of already is and also because they're the biggest dog."
right there you said it. - masterm1nd, on 05/12/2008, -2/+2'If anything'. Like I said I was telling you how it is. Now where do you get "morally obligated to the citizens of foreign nations"" in the same idea. You didn't. You're taking different two ideas and combining them to misinterpret me, again. I said I'M morally obligated, big difference. Go back and read the conversation carefully and see how irrational and defensive you seem..
- bphicke, on 05/12/2008, -2/+1It is very clear, if you can't understand how you commenting on how the US is the "biggest dog" and "makes the rules for the world" as a way to justify sending forces to China to stop them from killing their citizens, is a direct reflection of the neocon philosophy then I am sorry, but there is nothing more I can do to help you.
You answering your own question about who makes the rules with "Nothing, rightfully" is negated by the fact that your entire argument is that there are situations in which it is okay to invade a foreign country. - masterm1nd, on 05/12/2008, -2/+2Your not hearing me. I agree with you and Paul's position, I just don't like your absolutes, never and always. I said I'm going to stop calling people idiots the other day. Good thing I don't like absolutes because I couldn't have foreseen you. Are you telling me that if a government could spend 100 dollars to save 100 thousand foreign lives, you would let them die because the governments duty is absolutely not to foreigners? I actually agree with Paul more than any other politician but people like you turn me away.
- bphicke, on 05/13/2008, -2/+1Government cant spend 100 dollars to save 1 life here.
- masterm1nd, on 05/13/2008, -2/+2You don't know nor can prove that, since the future hasn't happened and you haven't seen it. If that were the case, than answer me. That
s all I'm saying is that you can't say always and never, otherwise I agree with the principle. - bphicke, on 05/13/2008, -2/+1So, we don't invade other nations as long as it is convenient?
- masterm1nd, on 05/13/2008, -2/+2facepalm, if you don''t understand it now, you're not going to get it by me rephrasing it again.
- bphicke, on 05/13/2008, -2/+1I understand it. I just choose to live by principles.
- masterm1nd, on 05/13/2008, -2/+2You would let a hundred thousand people die to save the government 100 dollars. Sound like an ***** too me.
- bphicke, on 05/13/2008, -2/+1I would let their people organize and cast off an illegitimate government. Since you decided to take replace reality with 100 dollars, I will replace 100 dollars with "money" when I say throwing money at problems doesn't make them go away.
- vault, on 05/13/2008, -1/+2You can't be serious, bphicke.
- masterm1nd, on 05/13/2008, -2/+1I think you may be confusing my use of cost and benefit as a money thing. When I used cost and benefit it means I mean factors like human lives and the greatest good for the most amount of people.
- bphicke, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1I meant your rational argument up until you thought you could magically save 100 thousand lives with 100 dollars.
- masterm1nd, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1It's called a hypothetical. It works out good for planning how you may react to different situations.
- bphicke, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1Give me one hypothetical situation where you could save 100 thousand lives in China with 100 dollars in the US.
- masterm1nd, on 05/11/2008, -5/+36As much as I agree with that, there are some situations which would override the sovereignty of a foreign government

Look at irrealis conditions. - carpeclunes, on 05/11/2008, -0/+12You are a fool, MtheoryX. Using "were" implies wishful thinking and is completely acceptable.
For instance: "If MtheoryX were smart, I wouldn't be writing this". Or: "If I were to kill MtheoryX, the world would be a better place."
It is called a subjunctive verb and it has to do with the mood of the sentence. You see, since it is impossible for you to be smart, the mood of the sentence is wishful, hence the "were". - sulthernao, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3It's subjunctive mood. So yes it is "were", though "was" is also an acceptable colloquialization.

- jayhawk, on 05/11/2008, -3/+8that's silly. they've earned their fame and that doesn't mean they have to stop being citizens. if folks don't like it then don't show up and comment on the stories when celebrities make news. duh.

As much as you wanna say that we shouldn't get involved with other countries all humans should be treated fairly and we should try to create equality. If you think that we shouldn't get involved with internal affairs because of how badly the US has dealt with other countries in the past century, that would be a horrible analogy just because we act in our own self-interest and not the interest of out human brother... pardon the hippie in me.

- TVarmy, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2I don't think Ellen Paige is crazy. Her metaphor may be a bit extreme, but she's calling for human rights in impoverished nations, and pointing out how many sitting dictators behave similarly to the Nazi regime. All of these facts are true. You may have posted this thinking Paige was actually claiming that the original, Nazi Adolph Hitler is alive. That conspiracy worked for a while, but in this day and age, Hitler is almost certainly dead no matter what. I have to admit the headline of this Digg is kind of misleading, and I'm debating tagging it as inaccurate.

I think someone has already pointed out that comparing this situation to Hitler does nothing but cast this problem in the wrong light.
Hitler killed millions and brought total war to Europe and then to the world. I doubt anything like that will happen with Burma...
Also, I am sick and tired of US celebrities trying to "fix" the problems of the world while they can be using their time and money to promote a healthier better America.
I don't give a flying ***** with the problems of the world right now, the US has a lot of major problems that need fixing we don't need to add fixing the world to the list of things we have to do.- OisinT, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2The US probably wouldn't be in so much ***** if they weren't trying to fix so many things in the world since the end of WWII
- TVarmy, on 05/11/2008, -2/+2People are dying. We're paying too much for gas and groceries, and pot's still illegal. Yes, there are a ton of problems in the United States. But when people are suffering abroad, I think we owe it to them to share our prosperity. Plus, if we help these nations get back on their feet properly, they become valuable trade and military allies.
I think it's very myopic to focus on just America, the world's richest nation, when there is so much wrong in the world. I would love to see us get socialized healthcare and all the other social programs Europeans have enjoyed for decades, but I think human suffering is equally deleterious, whether it happens to an American or a foreigner.- OisinT, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1newsflash: the US is not the world's richest nation anymore.

People who resents this dictator address the country by its old name 'Burma'- robbiemuffin, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1mmm no man, the people, you know, the people actually living over there, they have been calling it something that transliterates to myanmar for ... well, since about the time the west discovered the east. (seriously, since about the time of marco polo). That and the fact that the name change was a massive popular grass roots effort ... means you're just being an ass.
- OisinT, on 05/11/2008, -1/+10well they probably still can't find Myanmar
- ArchangelZLT, on 05/11/2008, -1/+2The actual name is Burma instead of the military junta's Myanmar.
- robbiemuffin, on 05/11/2008, -1/+3mmm no man, the people, you know, the people actually living over there, they have been calling it something that transliterates to myanmar for ... well, since about the time the west discovered the east. - ArchangelZLT, on 05/11/2008, -1/+3You are making no sense at all. Chinese people call China "Zhongguo". Japanese people call Japan "Nihon". And so many more examples. The fact that Burmese people refer to their country as Burma when speaking English ever since they learned the language, and the fact that major English-speaking countries does not officially recognize "Myanmar" makes Burma the most widely used English name for the country. And I don't give a damn the junta wanna be known as "Myanmar", for there's only an extremely small portion of English speakers, domestically or internationally, refer to the country as that.
P.S. Just a friendly suggestion, if I want to let the others take me seriously, I wouldn't remark someone else as "being an ass".- robbiemuffin, on 05/11/2008, -1/+1The fact that Burmese people refer to their country as Burma when speaking English
== that might be correct... if it were a fact. It isn't a fact. It's made up. There are 60 million people in Myanmar, and very nearly 100% of them call their country something that sounds a lot like myanmar and not at all like burma. The word burma comes from the language they speak, not the name of their country. In fact, at this point in time, the only places on the entire planet where people still sometimes call it burma are the United states and the UK. The rest of the world, individually and collectively under the auspices of the UN, have long since stopped calling them that ever since, back in the 80s, the population of the country organized and forced a vote on the name and changed the name to Myanmar by an overwhelming majority.
You can call them a junta and they can call your federal reserve a cartel. just because the technical definition fits doesn't mean it is appropriate. And ignoring the will of the nation to continue to expound your own twisted ideology is exactly the kind of inanity that leads to wars, totalitarianism, and all the things you actually believe that you stand against. So please stop :) - ArchangelZLT, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1@robbie:
Check your fact. Last time I read, I read that the junta forcefully changed the name without consulting the public in any way. In fact, the word Burma does not come from Burmese; it is used also in Burmese as a colloquial term. The government then thought the term is subversive and the English term is a reference to it, therefore changed it to Myanmar, the more formal term in Burmese.
Also regarding your "ignoring the will of the nation" opinion - No, I would not disregard the nation's opinion as long as their people actually wanted it. But as it's a movement unauthorized by the people, sorry, I wouldn't say I'm expounding my twisted ideology.

- robbiemuffin, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1the actual name is McDonald's, as in the advertising cartel which actually calls it "Burma"
mmm, people have called it Myanmar, who live there, since _before_ it was first discovered in the west. It very likely was just brittish imperialism to gave it the name "Burma" the first time. - robbiemuffin, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1I used to be exactly where a lot of people seem to be on this topic: how do you trust a government that shields its country from the outside world? They must have something to hide. But the way they dealt with international pressures to cause civil war in their country is really rather inspiring. They got the entire nation to rise up and reject the west's meddling. That's basically why this topic exists right now: we (some small group anyway) are hoping to ignore the will of 60 million people and just overthrow their government anyway, because we want our brand of government to rule the world, not a mix of different governments.

- source1984, on 05/11/2008, -4/+9if you notice, i don't know if its something about buddhism that makes people very sheepish, but a lot of countries with buddhist majorities are oppressive and dictatorial while facing little opposition from the population. I mean, I understand they follow the theory of nonviolence, but at a certain point isn't violence necessary?

- kds405, on 05/11/2008, -0/+4To them, it doesn't matter. Suffering is a major part of life, maybe next time around things will be better for them.
- RetardoCrisp, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1Suffering is part of all living things. The whole point of enlightenment is to be free from this. Knowing that life is suffering is 1 step of many to reaching moksha and not an excuse to perpetuate violence in the hopes for something better in the next life.
- Binto, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3I'm sure the Nazi's would have understood if the world took a nonviolent approach to their plot for global domination.
The Dalai Lama is full of *****.If anyone truly believes that actions that involve violence are never the answer, you are being very naive. As long as the human race exists, nonviolent actions will very rarely get the job done. It's unfortunate, but it's a necessary evil in this world.- RetardoCrisp, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1It is a necessary evil because you do not believe otherwise and thus conform to what everyone else follows. Grasp for truth within yourself. "Peace comes from within, do not seek it without" ~ Buddha
- RetardoCrisp, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1Satyagraha सत्याग्रह my friend. Read about Gandhi and you will see how it makes sense to not use violence. The grasping for truth via civil disobedience but never use violence. Violence only breed violence.

- TheBanditKing, on 05/11/2008, -2/+5First off, digg me down, I'm prepared for it.
Reading these comments i've noticed something, digg seems to be totally opposed to any sort of foreign affairs meddling, has bush's oil war destroyed the idea of human rights campaigning? His false pretense of "liberating the people" may have been *****, but this isn't propaganda to usher in the next economy shattering war, its a public awareness message.
Does it terrify people to see this sort of thing? Have we forgotten about Gandhi and Mandela already? There's more than one way to solve a human rights crisis, RTFA even.
The human rights organisations need awareness and a celebrity face and an easy-impact message (hitler is alive) just gets peoples attention. Thats all they need. Enough of this bickering, Digg.- arkboysooner, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2What's your solution? Invading Myanmar to distribute aid?
- TheBanditKing, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1What part of my comment suggested that? Anyway this particular piece has nothing to do with the current humanitarian crisis, its about human rights, and particularly the imprisonment of Aung San Suu Kyi.
Like i said, have we forgotten about Mandela already? Do we have to jump to invasion as the only possibility?? I don't remember the proud young soldiers of the U.S.A rolling into south africa back in 1990...
- TheBanditKing, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1What part of my comment suggested that? Anyway this particular piece has nothing to do with the current humanitarian crisis, its about human rights, and particularly the imprisonment of Aung San Suu Kyi.
- robbiemuffin, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1a little back story for you...I was in high school, busy being force fed history classes because that's what you do in high school, when they first adopted the name of Myanmar in 1989. So I got an earful on this.
There was a small organized push to address human rights there, from the west, but it never really took off because the world is full of good causes and everyone busily spends their day on even worse atrocities like Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur. -- Just kidding! No one cares about stuff like that, we're too busy talking about the coming $4.50 per gallon of gasoline atrocity that we face!
So, all this work was done to put pressure on this country which, for the most part, is really a group of people that think that the outside world is amoral, and so they wal themselves off; all the signs were printed, CEOs of green activist companies had coffee mugs with "free Burma" on it ... they were really feeling the pressure. So they did what all greedy rat-bastard communists do, they formed a grass roots peaceful movement across the entire country, all in secret, then snuck up to the world and sneak attacked us with this name change. And worse, just to really spite us, they used some name that everyone in the country has been using almost since the time when the west discovered the east: Myanmar.
There was nothing to be done, we had all this activism all built up, and no where to direct it to. The signs all had "burma" printed on them. The grass-roots network was all formed around some non-existant country. So, to spite them, they created this internet meme to just call them Burma anyway. Just to grind the oppressive regime that just happens to have popular referendums, (several) major political parties like the most popular National League for Democracy and the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy, but also many trivial ones -- which are trivial because they are small because they represent minorities in the country.
