Earthquake hits the UK?
news.bbc.co.uk — This just woke me up, very rare for the UK to be feeling any 'Tremors'
- 162 diggs
- digg it
- super27, on 02/27/2008, -2/+3Recorded as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake from Hull

http://ratemytrade.co.uk/news- KrayzieKyd, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2"Stop saying Hull"... sorry, Doctor Who joke
- azium, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2Yes, very wobbly here on my sofa in vauxhall. Time approx 00:57
- drakken33, on 02/27/2008, -0/+0Same here near Oxford.
- dheaddy, on 02/27/2008, -0/+6I was awake at the time when I felt it here in Coventry. I shrugged it off as a very strong wind until reports came in on the radio!
- drakken33, on 02/27/2008, -0/+0I initially thought "was that an earthquake?" then thought it couldn't be. Something must've hit the wall. There was no traffic around at that time though so I was convinced it was an earthquake, especially when everyone was talking about it this morning.

- Snave, on 02/27/2008, -1/+3Wow I dismissed this at first as a car or truck going past my house, but it lasted a good 10 seconds, crazy events for England for sure.
- sbraidley, on 02/27/2008, -1/+3Hinckley, Leic
I was just listening to music and living near a train line you get tremors but this one scared me cause its nothing like I've felt before! - dinkleberry, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3The earth moved for you too, then?
- sh2ta, on 02/27/2008, -1/+2The end is nigh!
- SolidSnake24, on 03/28/2008, -1/+3I was just going to watch There Will Be Blood, when this happened!!
- adamlonsdale, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2Woke us all up here in Hull. 4.7 ^.^
- quetzalcoatl1, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2My entire house vibrated... And so did my bowels.
- bumblefoot, on 02/27/2008, -1/+3so far i've confirmed that this was felt from manchester to berkshire which is quite far south, that's a quite large area :-), Felt it here in northamptonshire, although it shook the house and i was like "ohhhh earthquake!"
- bomafolisto, on 02/27/2008, -4/+2Nothing in Liverpool - lame.
- JohnC86, on 02/27/2008, -1/+4There was it was just very small, I probably only noticed it because my laptop wobbled whilst i was watching a film.
- Kyle1988, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1where did you nik you laptop from?????
- ratsville, on 02/27/2008, -0/+5good job! there would be mass looting ;)
- supertom2, on 02/27/2008, -0/+0I never expected to see anti-scouse comments on digg, but then again this is the internet (i still dugg you up, it was funny)
- ratsville, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1i do really like scousers :) even more now :)
- JohnC86, on 02/27/2008, -1/+4There was it was just very small, I probably only noticed it because my laptop wobbled whilst i was watching a film.
- garethDE, on 02/27/2008, -2/+4I was sat at my computer with a police reality show on TV when my flat shook for around 2 seconds. I had to hold onto a nearby ornament to stop it falling. I checked outside all the windows to see if there was any smoke/fire from some kind of explosion (living in the criminal paradise that is the UK you have to expect these things) but saw nothing. Guess #2 was a quake, and a few moments later the BBC posted this article.
As this is the first quake that I've experienced while awake and old enough to remember, it was quite a bizarre feeling.- dinkleberry, on 02/27/2008, -1/+0Was it Nightwatch you were watching? cracking show
- garethDE, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1Actually yes it was. Kinda half watching chavs continue to ruin this country (and get laughable sentences for doing so) and half planning when/how/where I'm going to move to to get away from it all.
The way things are going with criminals being protected from any serious punishment for fear of violating their human rights (thanks, liberals), I expect more and more people to be thinking the same as time goes on.
Obviously, the liberals haven't considered who's going to pay for all of the benefits when only sponging criminals remain in the UK after everyone with an ounce of decency has moved to Australia/USA to get away from all of this.
But let's not get too off-topic here. ;)
- garethDE, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1Actually yes it was. Kinda half watching chavs continue to ruin this country (and get laughable sentences for doing so) and half planning when/how/where I'm going to move to to get away from it all.
- ratsville, on 02/27/2008, -1/+2nightwatch is ace! nothing better than watching drunken chavs making arses of themselves and then getting manhandled by the law
- dinkleberry, on 02/27/2008, -1/+0Was it Nightwatch you were watching? cracking show
- SebsWorld, on 02/27/2008, -1/+2We felt it in Swindon, Wiltshire. I'm sure it was just after 1am here.
- peterkay, on 02/27/2008, -7/+1As it happened:
http://www.craighamnett.com/general/minor-earthqua ...- ratsville, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1nothings happening mate :)
- zMastaa, on 02/27/2008, -0/+5yeah felt it here in Manchester, thought it was strong wind as well until i got bombarded by msn contacts asking "did you feel it"
- adamlonsdale, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2Woke us all up here in Hull. 4.7 ^.^
- madaday, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3omfg just got back from drinking to have my whole flat share a collective "WTF?!"
- madaday, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3should have mentioned that we had all seen cloverfield recently...
- madaday, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2google maps said it was 14.6 miles from Uni Lincoln campus by road :S
- S0m3dud3, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3Felt it here too in Nottinghamshire, near Worksop - bloody thing made me jump I was just going to bed and I almost fell over since I was half way through standing up to go and get ready for bed.
- theright, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2...were you getting ready for bed at the time, though?
- Snave, on 02/27/2008, -3/+3BBC is reporting this tremor affecting over 6 countries!
- quetzalcoatl1, on 02/27/2008, -1/+6Don't you mean counties?
- Snave, on 02/27/2008, -1/+4Opps, yes my bad!
- Kamisado, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2Felt it down in Surrey. Didn't feel the smaller one a year or two back so this is the first quake I've actually felt :)
- quetzalcoatl1, on 02/27/2008, -1/+6Don't you mean counties?
- Christbait, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3Probably nothing if you live in a country where they are frequent but I'm fairly shook up here in Manchester! House was rocking like mad.
They seem to be getting stronger each and every time, disturbing.- garethDE, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2No doubt the media will claim it's all due to global warming.
- Kyle1988, on 02/27/2008, -0/+0"global warming has NO EFFECT WHATSOEVER on earthquakes. go back to middle school and learn about plate tectonics."
WRONG! Or, to be more precise, still being evaluated. Scientists are wondering more and more about if the ocean effects tectonic plates as the pressures involved are tremendous. Global warming is having a significant effect on sea levels. Ice removal may also have a direct effect.
Just think about having a bath on you then filling it up... thats a lot of presure for the size of any human.. just think the worlds a lot bigger
- Kyle1988, on 02/27/2008, -0/+0"global warming has NO EFFECT WHATSOEVER on earthquakes. go back to middle school and learn about plate tectonics."
- DarthTater, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1yes indeed. This is very common in another countries like Japan and Mexico, but still news everytime it happens
- garethDE, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2No doubt the media will claim it's all due to global warming.
- theright, on 02/27/2008, -0/+8Felt it here in London.
Thought the Cloverfield monster had touched down. - GS898, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2thank god it wasn't just me - I thought I was going mad!
- flatpete, on 02/27/2008, -0/+4I was in bed, reading about parallel universes and contemplating how to get into the 5th dimension.... needless to say when i felt the house shake... i got a little freaked out.
Ditto on the WTF?
Pete - LANCASTER!!! - 10 seconds - ratsville, on 02/27/2008, -1/+3fcking earthquakes! bastards!!
- daveybawden, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3i was closing a bar in Nottingham and it scared the shiz out of me
- Ionis, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3Felt it very hard in Hull. I haven't hared that anyone is hurt which is good news. I can say I've never been so scared in my life!
- scotchegg78, on 02/27/2008, -0/+6You could not make this up, I was actaully playing around with my missus when the room shuck, for 20 mins I kept telling hrt it was all me. Then BBC news 24 told the truth. We have helicopters all over the place now mind?
- OMGAero, on 02/27/2008, -0/+5I was half asleep when this happened and I was ***** myself.
- scotchegg78, on 02/27/2008, -1/+3thats nice to know, but lets just talk about the earthquake if we can.
- ratsville, on 02/27/2008, -0/+4hope you have cleaned yourself up
- OMGAero, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3Oh yes. I'm all clean now.
Getting back to the news though I heard this was felt as far as London, is anyone here actually from London and felt it?
- OMGAero, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3Oh yes. I'm all clean now.
- sbraidley, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3I was very scared in Hinckley!
I thought the monster out of cloverfield or a bomb had gone off and I was like WTF! - Kohai, on 02/27/2008, -1/+4Felt it in Sale (near Manchester) USGS confirmation:
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Qu ... - theright, on 02/27/2008, -3/+1I can't believe what just happened. The whole place started shaking, then the lights went out.
Needless to say we all ran up to the roof terrace to see what was going on, and saw this huge explosion over by the Houses of Parliament. Ran out on to the street and this huge chunk of Big Ben's clock face came crashing down right next to us, crushing a car.
Don't have much time to type, I think they're going to start evacuating us. Oh god, no, what the - YHCIR, on 02/27/2008, -0/+5http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Ma ...
- sbraidley, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3I felt it hard in Hinckley worked out on Google Maps 120 miles (approx) from epicentre!

I live Uni accommodation Flat, everyone came out and was talking about it, tuned on the TV nothing, Radio was talking about it so that was good.
I'm interested to know about aftershocks now, unless this was a pre shock or whatever, any ideas on when the aftershock or main shock is to come? if any?- bumblefoot, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2it's doubtful due to it being small earthquake wise, it was only 4.7 on the richtor scale
- WhoreFreak, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1it was 5.3 in the epicentre, and aftershocks are expected according to BBC NEWS 24
- bumblefoot, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2it's doubtful due to it being small earthquake wise, it was only 4.7 on the richtor scale
- Supernova36, on 02/27/2008, -2/+1Me and my friends had a camera on when it happened:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytACsLk9vMo- ratsville, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3the big guy is doing some dance moves

- ratsville, on 02/27/2008, -8/+2maybe some raghead let a bomb off?
- Ionis, on 02/27/2008, -2/+2That's uncalled for, You make me sick.
- ratsville, on 02/27/2008, -2/+2haha.. well.. who else lets bombs off in england?
- scotchegg78, on 02/27/2008, -1/+1start your life again waster.
- ratsville, on 02/27/2008, -1/+1are you a terrorist sympathiser?
- scotchegg78, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1No, just someone who does not discriminate against all people because of their race or looks.
- ratsville, on 02/27/2008, -1/+1ok, but most terrorists are ragheads and that's a fact.
- quetzalcoatl1, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1'Raghead' is a horrible and incredibly racist term, you're disgusting. Do you call black people *****? Shame on you.
- ratsville, on 02/27/2008, -1/+1you politically correct nonce. whats wrong with 'Raghead'? they wear rags on their heads. i actually think it's quite endearing considering quite a few of them want to kill us all :) and no.. i dont call black people ***** + black people don't want to bomb the crap out of us!
- dheaddy, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1How's that BNP membership working out for you?
- ratsville, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1whats wrong with being british and wanting to be british. i aint no member of the bnp and i still dont trust most RAGHEADS. i have no problem whatsoever with most of the immigrants here in the UK as they dont want to destroy us and our way of life. if you like RAGHEADS so much why dont you move to pakistan!
- ratsville, on 02/27/2008, -1/+1are you a terrorist sympathiser?
- garethDE, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3My first reaction was actually to look for signs of an explosion out of the window, to be honest. I guess subconsciously I had decided that such an attack was more likely than the UK falling victim to an earthquake.
In this case though I'm more than happy to have been wrong.- ratsville, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2me too!
- Ionis, on 02/27/2008, -2/+2That's uncalled for, You make me sick.
