- WillyVolk, on 10/10/2007, -3/+63The Europe?
- geekchic, on 10/10/2007, -2/+36Why is the submitter surprised that different countries would have different limits - simply because they are on the same landmass. Would I be justifiably shocked to learn that (for example) that the USA and Venezuela have different limits, despite also being on the same landmass?
- StephanieF, on 10/10/2007, -6/+34Was I the only one who had assumed the legal limits would be more flexible in Europe?
I was certainly taken for surprise. - ChromaVita, on 10/10/2007, -10/+30Yes, but that's a .05 in METRIC!
- thefog, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21Imagine my shock to find that other countires dare to have laws differing from ours.
- bffoley, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17Yes. Not to be confused with that OTHER Europe.
- Jabertsohn, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18Many Americans think Europe is a country and the countries in Europe are states.
- reflex768, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15The Europe. The little known punk stage, that preceded the 80s hair metal rockers rise to fame.
- Cykaos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13I could be wrong but didn't each state in the US have it's own legal limit until recently?
- Xvash2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Must be hard to get Monaco plates considering a plate is probably larger than the country itself.
- KenOh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Europe has vastly better and more wide-spreading public transportation. Hence, there is really no reason for you to be driving drunk in the first place.
- Minishark, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12It's fun to compare BACs, but they don't really mean that much, because it doesn't measure how impaired your driving skills are. It's just a number. That's why police still do field sobriety tests. If your BAC is .10 and you're still able to drive perfectly fine, then there's nothing wrong with that. If your BAC is .05 but you're all over the road, you shouldn't be driving. A person who has had nothing to drink, but is drowsy and/or talking on a cell phone is equally as impaired and dangerous as a drunk driver.
- inactionman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Rubbish. In the UK and most of continental Western Europe you are likely to be randomly breathalised in 90% of cities at some point over an extended stay.
- cnot3, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Because zero tolerance always works. I have zero tolerance for zero tolerance.
- Ford_Prefect2nd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Gasp, laws are different in different countries!
- drmangrum, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8It's like they're in a different country than us.
- wiggles, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10I would prefer arrested, jailed, then banned from driving.
- manicallday, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Belgian girl? Did you hit it?
- ZBrannigan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9i had the same reaction. Is he surprised the laws vary from country to country? Thats just crazy!
- nodonoug, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7He's on digg, of course he didn't.
- nairanvac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Must not've been very good in the sack, then, huh?
- Webbster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6This is idiotic. If you drink YOU DON'T DRIVE.
Doesn't matter what the limits are in each country. If you have a couple of beers get a taxi home. Do not get behind the wheel.
/Lost 2 friends to drink drivers. - nodonoug, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The technological prowess of the elite (many of whom were foreign born and educated) does not make up for the staggering stupidity of the masses.
- TygerrTygerr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Maybe in Belgium. In the UK they're strictly enforced and drinking and driving is considered morally unpalatable.
- reed311, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9There's a lot of people on the Internet that think that drinking and driving should be OK here in the States. Whenever there is a drunk driving death, they shift blame from the killer to organizations like MADD. There's a reason why Russia only had about 2 drunk driving deaths last year and it's because you are banned for life from driving if you get busted. Driving is not a right and if you want to risk other people's lives because you were too selfish to call a cab then you deserve to lose your license forever; because when you take someone's life it will be gone forever.
- Cykaos, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Sadly that is true, but even then differing laws between states shouldn't seem that unusual. Of course if you think Europe is a country in the first place your reasoning skills might be in question.
- jebus123, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5What they aren't? Next your going to tell me that Africa isn't a country either.
- halavais, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4At above 0.5, severe deja vu is also indicated.
- plingboot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4"I would have thought Europe would be better than the U.S."
It is. Generally I'd argue Europe has more progressive / intelligent laws than the US. Which is why you're assuming 'better'. You're right though, we don't kill criminals, it's illegal to carry a gun round etc. all better, relaxed laws on soft drugs, better. Oh and stricter laws on drunk driving, better. - nodonoug, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Wow. Another example of the stellar education system. He didn't say 'continent', he said 'landmass.' North and South America are connected (it's kind of the whole reason that the Panama Canal was constructed).
- inactionman, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6The Scandinavian limits are moot as no-one can afford to drink enough to surpass them.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7The legal limits in Europe are more strict than the US. They are hardly enforced, according to the Belgian girl I hung out with last semester.
- cnot3, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Thank you, I hate how ignorant people think you're drunk driving if you;ve had any alcohol, most people have very little impairment at .08, if any.
- drakenlot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Well, you can't be as shocked as the author, he wrote a stupid article on it.
- chedabob, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Thanks Captain Obvious, but shouldn't you be putting out a fire on the other side of the city?
- ChromaVita, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Like gender...
- fuliginosus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Not metric countries:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/17/Metric_system.png - Cykaos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4yeah it looks like in the mid 90's several states still had .10 limit while others were at .08
http://www.druglibrary.org/schaffer/Misc/driving/s15p1.htm
Maryland was at .10 until 2001 http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m3469/is_18_52/ai_75533973 - cnot3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3IDK about everyone, but most people I know who've just had a few take it easy on the road cuz they don't wanna get pulled over and risk a DWI, the people swerving all over the road at 70 mph probably have a BAC quite a bit higher than .10
- cawpin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yes, each state STILL has it's own limit. It's just that the federal government decided to extort them to force the .08. They would withhold federal highway money if the states didn't change to .08.
- nodonoug, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4On that point, let's reuse the same example with the U.S. and Mexico. Satisfied?
- toughice, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Should we have stricter laws for people who harm others because of drinking and driving - and weaker laws for people who just get caught drinking and driving.
You would think that not everybody in any single country is exactly the same as the person sitting next to them, so to apply a blanket statement about somebody's ability to drive isn't very accurate.
The only victim in a victimless crime is freedom. - Egoist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I'm starting to believe that bad grammar and misspellings in the titles are intentional. Note how many stories as badly worded as this one make it to the front page. I think people open those stories just to comment on the titles.
- Salmar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I pity those people, but you're right.
- Electric_Sheep, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Please. You do not get ticketed for having a dirty car. For having a car with dirt obscuring the windscreens or that impairs driving, then yes.
- bborofka, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It's easier (and better for the people) to have less of a tolerance for drunk driving when you have a much better, more prolific public transportation system.
- gyronic, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5There is NO REASON to drive ***** up.
- manicallday, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Driving ability actually depends on a lot of things.
- warriorscot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It affects different people differently and Europeans tend to drink stronger alcoholic beverages so a few drinks i to much to drive, one decent beer is about as much as you can risk.
And if you think a few drinks doesn't affect you have a few then get yourself tested for response times and coordination i think you will be pretty surprised at the results. - Cykaos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3South Carolina went to .08 in 2003 etc...
