Independence for Taiwan and Tibet!- elscorcho717, on 04/28/2008, -1/+45Chinese people =/= Chinese government. *****.
- cyrix, on 04/28/2008, -2/+4I like how this idea holds true in this instance. China sends troops to kill Tibetans. Chinese government is at fault and not the people. US sends troops who kill people in Iraq. US citizens are to blame. Not US government.
- Chandon, on 04/29/2008, -0/+4Are you implying that the US is also not a democracy? If so, then your criticism is at least internally consistent.
- 5555, on 04/29/2008, -2/+2The difference is that Americans pride themselves on their government that is BY the people and FOR the people - the US government is elected by THEM. Chinese citizens have no such choice or control over their officials.

- ElBeh, on 04/28/2008, -3/+21Yes, because every Chinese person, specifically the ones that died in that train crash, do not want independence for Taiwan and Tibet...
- Hangly, on 04/28/2008, -2/+4Not all of them, only about 99%.
Still, being ignorant isn't an offense punishable by death, not even in China.- killbert24, on 04/28/2008, -3/+2How can you even believe such a statistic when China doesn't have a free press or freedom of speech. That 99% thing could have been ***** made up by the regime controlling China.
- Hangly, on 04/28/2008, -2/+4That number is based on informal discussions I've had with my 300+ Chinese friends, family members, and coworkers.
I'm in Liaoning, but that figure is pretty representative of the whole country.

- Hangly, on 04/28/2008, -1/+12I spent all week trying to convince my Chinese friends that Westerners don't really hate them, and that the recent flareup is just a political disagreement (and that they should get used to those.)

I don't know, they look extremely wealthy, well off, and Western.

- neutrascrub, on 04/28/2008, -0/+11you'd be surprised at the new wealth in china (and you are). the young generation is almost completely removed from the government and the old ways.
- jaalin, on 04/28/2008, -0/+11welcome to the wonderful world of westernization. what did you expect, the green commie garb? straw hats? most of that stuff is fake / knockoffs, but it dont mean chinese can't be trendy. i wonder if your view is what the general public thinks of china...
- ToMZiLLA, on 04/28/2008, -1/+8u ever been to china?

- moolaismyfriend, on 04/28/2008, -1/+1No I have not been to China yet, I feel I am pretty well traveled I have been to 19 countries and 47 states so far, but China, is definitely on my list of places to spend some time.
Thanks for the info from all the comments. - someone173406, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1In other parts of the world, this is called a fob.
- DaffyDuck, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1China is changing so fast. I went there a couple of years ago and am going back in less than 2 weeks. It'll be interesting to see what changed. I will say that most Westerner's views about China are outdated, as seen above.
- mmortal03, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1For all we know, they could have been the richest people on the train.
- Hangly, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1She doesn't look rich to me, that entire ensemble probably cost $15.

- killbert24, on 04/28/2008, -8/+27This is a tragic event. Let us have a moment of silence out of appreciation for the people who've perished and the loved ones who will suffer as a result.

- yuanzhoulu, on 04/28/2008, -2/+12it seems to me that there are people out there that run scripts that auto-digg down certain users' comments right away. i say this because EVERY comment i post gets dugg down automatically to +0 within seconds, even on some pages which are not so popular.
you will notice that this post gets dugg down to +0 instantly as well.
i hate this and i wish digg would detect and ban them, but sadly they don't. and i think they've gottetn so big that i can't even give them feedback, i have no clue how to send kevin rose an e-mail.- killbert24, on 04/28/2008, -1/+6Wow... very interesting! - warlokaz2004, on 04/28/2008, -27/+1and in an incredible coincidence -- all of the trains passanger were Tibetan protesters! Imagine that!

And that's why they make the big bucks! - bag2p, on 04/28/2008, -7/+1Ahh . . . suck to be credited with that mistake. Especially suck to have to appear before the Chinese gov.

- cantaclaro, on 04/28/2008, -18/+5Don't bring Tibet into this, there are plenty of other reasons to dislike China other than their "oppressing" of a monarchial dictatorship where the non-llama class is subservient to their benevolent Llama leaders.
The sleeping dragon known as China isn't waking up, they are not a super power nor will they ever be.
In the next 10 years they will have 30 million more men than women. About 50% of the population doesn't even know they live in China, they speak some ancient dialect and live on a steppe with their oxen plowing their fertile land.
This Olympics is going to be a cluster ***** because of their government's incompetence. They can't even schedule trains for ***** sake.- unreg, on 04/28/2008, -3/+2Big Trouble in Little China

If you want to speak with English-speaking Chinese about any subjects try either chinadaily.com.cn (censored) or daxueyingyu.com/forum (uncensored?) You might be surprised, ok.
- saintgenius, on 04/28/2008, -24/+3The Chinese government blamed the collision on Tibetan separatists Tuesday, saying that the Dalai clique organized an concerted effort by Tibetan shepherds to herd elks onto the tracks, thus causing one of the trains to derail. The People's Daily added that if Dalai Lama ever returned to China, he would be subject to death by one thousand cuts by the glorious and ever-peaceful Chinese people.
- Tyrghast, on 04/28/2008, -12/+3'Dozens'... catastrophes are getting less and less impressive, aren't they?
- elDud3rino, on 04/28/2008, -4/+2Even funnier that they use the word dozen to explain a number of 66 or more.
- baconz, on 04/28/2008, -2/+1I guess the headline "Roughly 21 Pi of people die in China train crash" didn't have the same impact. (pun intended)
- punkcat, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1he said Dozens, multiples of 12

- Tyorant, on 04/28/2008, -3/+23A lot of ***** sympathetic comments above.
- Versh, on 04/28/2008, -1/+15Yeah, I can't understand why those individuals would post such offensive comments over a tragic accident. It's a depressing trend in which people use misery to promote their political views or make some snide cynical statement. I'm not sure if there's a name for this phenomena, but it makes me sick.
- 88e88, on 04/28/2008, -4/+2It is sad, but whatever, free speech, right?

- orias6891, on 04/28/2008, -2/+39This is an absolute tragedy and the fact that so many of the comments above me are so blase is a testament to the idiocy and apathy infecting western culture. No China isn't a shining beckon of freedom (like you assume yours is), but these are people like you and me, with families and friends they will grieve as much as any other race. Grow up and show some ***** respect.
- lennybird, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5It's posts like this one, that are the reason why I still bother to read digg comments at all. Simply put: well said.
- Dbeneath, on 04/28/2008, -3/+43I think it's interesting that when Americans die in a tragedy or even if there is a story about one person dying (like the UNC student body president) diggers are so quick to be the ones expressing real, "heartfelt" sympathy for them and their families, and then when a bunch of people are killed on a train in china it's "they'll never get to play gta" and "***** happens" and basically "***** those chinamen gooks." And I thought diggers were supposed to be one of the most liberal, progressive groups of nerds out there. anyways, just pointing that out. kinda makes me sad.
- shinythingy, on 04/28/2008, -1/+13you expect a lot from people who will 90% of the time ask "but will it blend" about anything technology related
- ers35, on 04/28/2008, -7/+1But, will it blend?
- dycc07, on 04/28/2008, -5/+0people say all sorts of inappropriate comments, for laughs and shock value... i do express sympathy for the victims, cheer up. and btw nowhere was "***** those chinamen gooks." mentioned anywhere in the comment thread, so many you're reading too much into it?
- DaffyDuck, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3I don't think he's reading too much into it. The undertone of many of the comments is basically that.
- bdbr, on 04/28/2008, -0/+6The sarcastic comments are also the ones getting thumbs down. The comments of condolences are the ones getting the thumbs up. Look at the ratings if you want to get a feel for the overall sentiments of diggers.

http://www.idvd.com.cn/star_obj_987_1.html- Hangly, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1That's Jet Li :/
- dancingdeer, on 04/29/2008, -0/+4Simply put...its Schadenfreude. Western people are made believe by their governments and media that Chinese are to blame for all the problems in the world. If they would see how American and European factories treat Chinese workers like slaves these people would be full of joy.
Newspapers pick anything they can find about China and try to put it in a bad light. There are articles about rising crime rates (which are absolutely laughable compared to the US). I saw articles about stricter Visa regulations for China because of what happened in Tibet. Western media is so full of bull... Everyone knew about the new Visa regulations way before it happened. And getting a Chinese visa is a piece of cake compared to what Chinese have to go through for a simple tourist visa.
I even saw an article in a German newspaper that Chinese are to blame for rising Christmas tree prices. But I never saw even one article in a big newspaper which described some of the oppression Tibetans suffered before Chinese freed them.
- Virgule, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2There is a Jackie Chan picture on the first link... >_>

- digggggggggg, on 04/28/2008, -2/+16What the ***** is wrong with you people? Something horrible just happened and all you can think about is how you can hate on Chinese people even more. Does being Chinese somehow make them less than human?
Get your heads out of your asses. - TheScogg, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1Seriously, some of the comments on here are really messed up...obviously a lot of hatred over anything related to China. You people need to first think about how much you hate China for their political views and human rights issues. Now, you need to realize that the citizens of China hate these exact policies even more, because they are being oppressed by said policies and violations. Next, think about how bad it would it would be to come home from your job mining coal with extremely lackluster safety regulations for probably the equivalent of $.50/hour (US) only to learn that one of your loved ones had died that day. That's not funny...it's an already miserable existence compounded by tragedy.
- dancingdeer, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1or they should try to think how it would be to have to move for your factory job far away from anyone you know to produce products which you can't afford yourself for American companies. To sleep with 20 other men in the same room. get paid 100 bucks a month to work 7 days a week 10 hours per day and get 2 days off per month.
And when the Olympics come, something which everyone was waiting for. To show how the country developed and how it is taking the west as a good example you have all the foreigners ***** all over you, because they blame you for all the bad things which happen in the world.
- dancingdeer, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1or they should try to think how it would be to have to move for your factory job far away from anyone you know to produce products which you can't afford yourself for American companies. - Option84, on 04/28/2008, -4/+2Whites have hated the "colored" for centuries and that will never change. I don't understand why some of you are so offended. Racism is a part of white culture and it will always stay that way. Forever. Just live with it.

- shdwsclan2, on 04/28/2008, -8/+1There's another reason not to have Olympics in china.....poor safety of mass transit.
This is why America has the safest train transit system in the world.....
The trains, for one, are crash tested, yes crash tested
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApXBXUpqYsE&feature ...
In an america train crash, no more than 10 will die and no less than -1.
And then their is the obvious precaution of slowing down at traffic switches(where the inbound and outbound tracks criss-cross), which obviously was not followed here...- DaffyDuck, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2Dude, we have a lot fewer trains than China and fewer people ride them. The statistics are in our favor. I don't think train wrecks are all that common in China.
- jimbruno, on 04/28/2008, -2/+0This is a horrible thing to happen and I do feel bad for the families of those poor souls. However, honestly, when I first heard this I thought,

- mrzack, on 04/29/2008, -3/+1Only 66 deaths? That's nothing. The Chinese have 1.3 billion more to spare. There's a saying in China by the Chinese themselves: 中国人的命不值钱 "A Chinese life is not worth anything" ( cuz there's so many)
- BoNing, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1A American life is not worth anything neither, and everyone has a gun, shot others everyday,
- dancingdeer, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3It is amazing that it made to the Digg frontpage. It is a very tragic event, but the only reason it is there is because of the racists (and the comments prove it).
But no one would care about "American" Coca Cola distributing poisoned fertilizers in India. If the headline would be Chinese company distributing poisoned fertilizers in America or Tibet the world would be in outrage. It would be all over the news for weeks.
But the story would then be "American company buys cheapest fertilizer in China and everyone is surprised that it contained lead" - BoNing, on 04/29/2008, -0/+0everyone in US is oppressing Hawaii and Alaska?
