- michaelpinto, on 12/31/2008, -3/+73In light of recent Digg controversies: I did spot someone who posted this story from MSNBC half an hour before me BUT the submitter had the tasteless headline "The Roof is on Fire..." which to me was all wrong as this is a serious news story.
- m3mn0n, on 01/01/2009, -3/+30dugg for honesty and decency.
- jhos1991, on 01/01/2009, -0/+13this is really sad. I've been santika a couple of times before
SO happy i got food poisoning for the new year as I might have gone there.... good to hear all my friends are safe too... - thedsack, on 12/31/2008, -0/+11"The police officer said 53 bodies had been counted at the scene while another person died at a hospital."
- jambla, on 01/01/2009, -0/+11Jonathan Head reported "safety procedures are largely ignored" and clubs make "payoffs to police for protection".
Typically the way here. - inactive, on 01/01/2009, -0/+10As a longtime resident of Bangkok (and frequent pub crawler) this was really sad. For even more up to the minute local coverage of this check out this link:

- doublefelix, on 12/31/2008, -13/+22Has Great White gone on a world tour?
/I'm sorry. - joestump, on 01/01/2009, -0/+7Sadly, this doesn't surprise me at all. Despite being a top tourist destination Bangkok (and Thailand in general) is not the safest place on the planet. I'm currently down in Koh Phangan and was almost hit with a firework last night. With 10's of thousands of people partying on the beach the locals were firing off hundreds of fireworks from rickety coffee cans. I can only imagine how many people cut their feet on glass or burned themselves twirling fire. No joke, you can pay 500 Baht (about $15) and get actual fire balls to twirl.
My thoughts are with those who died and their families. Tragic. - zeblith, on 01/01/2009, -1/+7Because celebrations are when people tend to get stupid(Well, you've heard it - A person is smart, people are stupid), and alcohol may or may not be involved.
The rule's pretty simple: Get enough people together, and they can ruin anything. - jambla, on 01/01/2009, -1/+7momomorrell.... hmmm... should be renamed to moron-orrell

- MikeWanDo, on 01/01/2009, -0/+4I don't need you to use all caps.
- fuzzmeister, on 01/01/2009, -1/+5The BBC has a practice of quoting statements that American news outlets would often just simply state as fact.
- SuperCujo, on 01/01/2009, -0/+4I bet you just love experiencing other cultures.
- e2superman, on 01/01/2009, -0/+4Having stayed in your room 95% of the time you must know what you are talking about. :P
- JakeBC, on 01/01/2009, -0/+4Horrible start to the new year. Hopefully it gets better from here on in.
- Seidoger, on 01/01/2009, -0/+4Damn, that's quite a turn of events for you!
While reading that news, i immediately began picturing myself in all the clubs i go to and what would happen when they're packed like they usually are and a fire would start... I think this would happen in a lot of clubs.. :\ - byrdgang, on 01/01/2009, -0/+4So, you're saying all this without knowing how the building was designed? Ah, I see.
- trollick, on 01/01/2009, -0/+3That's such a "tragedy". I'm "really sorry".
- TheFuzzyOne, on 01/01/2009, -0/+3Building rated for a small amount of people with one door vs 100 people.
GO. - AmazingSteve, on 01/01/2009, -0/+3Why would they? They already killed all 98 of their fans.
- SuperCujo, on 01/01/2009, -0/+3Wikipedia even has a Nightclub Fire category...

- jambla, on 01/01/2009, -0/+2Not so many ladyboys at Santika. You will want to hit up Patpong or Nana if your in to that...
- mbelleghem, on 01/02/2009, -0/+2Anyone happen to know who the DJ was and if he made it out?
- terenceyap7, on 01/02/2009, -0/+2The nightclubs in Bangkok are notorious fire-traps! Overcrowding is also another problem.
- w21irving, on 01/01/2009, -0/+2for future ref: "fire balls to twirl" == poi juggling
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poi_(juggling) - schrutefan, on 01/01/2009, -0/+1Why are there quotation marks around 'dozens' - does it have to be a multiple of 12?
- tomarocco, on 01/01/2009, -0/+1Would "scores die" make you feel better?
- themastersb, on 01/01/2009, -0/+1Didn't the whole fire in a Nightclub thing happen before which resulted in a bunch of deaths? You think they would have learned the first time.
- tomarocco, on 01/01/2009, -0/+1Because God hates heathens.
- hsbsitez, on 01/02/2009, -0/+1Sarcasm Approved.
- inactive, on 01/01/2009, -0/+1Yea, it's about covering their arses while (hopefully) someone is fact-checking. Then once it has been confirmed, they remove them. Which they have done. But curiously, 'spread quickly' is still in quotes. So either they don't know that it did for a fact, or that phrase came from an eye-witness.
- NorrisOBE, on 01/01/2009, -1/+2Paul van Dyk failed to appear, therefore clubbers got so angry they decided burn the club
- goldstein0, on 01/01/2009, -0/+1Can't see that in the linked article. Reference please.

- SuperCujo, on 01/01/2009, -1/+1What about a ***** start to a ***** year than last?
Or am I just pessimistic? - inactive, on 01/01/2009, -4/+4That's a twist, most people stop smoking on New Year's.
- ClevelandBrown, on 01/01/2009, -2/+2Did your parents just take away your wii recently or something?
- ardarvin, on 01/01/2009, -1/+1Is "dozens die" in quotes because dozens didn't really die, or is this the name of some hot new band?
- inactive, on 01/02/2009, -0/+0gang bangkok
- TheBoyDetective, on 01/01/2009, -1/+1Why is "dozens die" in quotations?
- inactive, on 01/01/2009, -1/+1don't worry, it was a fancy night club mostly for rich wankers and celebrities. so I shed no tear.
