torturingdemocracy.org — Scott Horton reports today that PBS may have refused to nationally air a controversial documentary on the use of torture by the U.S. government in order to protect its funding.

    Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Alberto Gonzalez, John Yoo, Major General Jeffrey Miller (and many more I'm sure) -- in doing what they have done, these war criminals have jeopardized the lives of any and all American soldiers captured in future conflicts.

    ALL ARE WAR CRIMINALS. ALL SHOULD HANG FOR WHAT THEY HAVE DONE.

  • swrostmore, on 10/15/2008, -2/+60After PBS aired the documentary "Bush's War," President Bush cut their funding in half for 2010 and eliminated it entirely for 2011 in an obvious act of recrimination. PBS' corporate leadership obviously got the message, because they are refusing to air this unbelievably powerful documentary about Bush's torture regime until the day after he leaves office. So it's our duty to push this into the public eye - this is what viral media is all about!

      It's as if we we're sitting in a million dollar home that we owed on, we have $75,000 in credit card debt, all of our furniture was bought on credit and is still being paid for, our new cars are leased, and we only earn an average salary.. yet you're telling your buds "eh, let's all go out to eat, I'll buy!". What's more money on the pile of debt we'll never repay, eh? The only problem is - at some point the bill collector is going to come calling. At some point the world is going to wake up and realize THEY are funding our extravagant lifestyles.

      The problem is, Americans seem to think that we're more special than other citizens on the planet -- different from other countries who've committed war crimes, and there's even a feeling of surprise that we would actually be subjected to be accused of something as heinous as war crimes.

      (As I understand it, Rumsfeld is actually liable for arrest in some countries as a war criminal for his use of torture.)

      "And since Congress enacted the Geneva Conventions, making them the law of the United States, any violations that Bush or any other American commits "are considered 'war crimes' punishable as federal offenses," as Justice Kennedy wrote.

      There are many grassroots organizations, as well as members of Congress who have been calling for investigation into war crimes committed by our own government. They deserve and need our support, if such trials will ever become a possibility.

      The AlterNet article finishes with the question, "George W. Bush in the dock facing a charge of war crimes? That's well beyond the scope of possibility ... or is it?"

After a big run-around about not being able to upset local programming with specials (Whaaaa???) -- and that they had a committee who decided what was aired and what wasn't -- in the most condescending tone -- and after I insisted over and over that if a decision had been made NOT to show it that I wanted to be given the reason why, I was finally told that it would be aired in December.

    AFTER the election!!

    I am so angry. I live in North Carolina, and my local PBS station is WUNC-TV. ANYBODY FROM NORTH CAROLINA PLEASE CALL THEM AND DEMAND TO KNOW WHY IT'S NOT BEING SHOWN UNTIL AFTER THE ELECTION! They can be reached at 1-888-292-7070.

  • svjim, on 10/17/2008, -0/+20My father was a soldier during WW II and after the war our family traveled around the world with him and the army and I've seen and remember the destruction that was brought on by evil. It is always hard to believe that the country that you love can have practiced and maybe still is practicing such totally evil and inhuman methods against other human beings. There simply is no justification for such inhuman treatment of others. In Germany, at one concentration camp after it was liberated the citizens of the local town were force to come to the concentration camp and bury the dead so they could experience the consequences of what was done in their name. This documentary should be required viewing by all Americans so we too can know what was done in our name.
  • magus_melchior, on 10/17/2008, -0/+19The reason why the Bush administration is suppressing this (and you can bet really good money that Cheney and Addington are behind it) is because people will get on Congress' ass demanding an investigation, a Special Prosecutor, and an impeachment of the entire Bush White House from the President on down.

    Of course, being unitary executive theorists, that amounts to treason in their eyes. So, should anyone even organize a big protest, you can bet that US Army North Command will send in their freshly-trained brigade for some "crowd control".

    I've said this in another thread: Get this video outside US borders, copyrights be damned. Smuggle it to China, Russia, and Sweden, and let Bittorrent take care of the rest. If that does not motivate the UN to press for war crimes trials, nothing will.

Obviously they wouldn't voluntarily go, and nobody has the military strength to go into the US and take them by force. I imagine they would they simply never be able to leave US soil again - if they landed in Germany or France (for example) they'd be arrested at the airport.

  • cruzecon, on 10/18/2008, -0/+16Let's all figure out how to get copies of this report and have "House parties" to show it, have a copy put at each local library as a donation and offer to show it for free at other events including food and drink. That usually gets some interested.
    I think this was actually aired on my local PBS(WKOP/WETP?)- late at night but aired. I am a bad person because I missed it, at that time. By the way, this is the RED part of my state.
    • allowners, on 10/18/2008, -1/+3I was thinking the same, however on the website the DVD for sale is for "home use," which technically means you could not do public showings. This wouldn't be a problem for house parties or donating to public libraries, but it would be a problem for public events. They need to offer more options so that people can spread the news that our media refuses to disseminate, due to political reasons, in a timely manner. Reputable news sources needs to be rebuilt from the ground up in the US. We need to get busy people.

      Executions are indeed gruesome, and beheading is the customary method in some middle eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia, where I've heard they have public beheadings in a place referred to as Chop Chop Square.

      Is torturing an innocent person for years justified because there is injustice and evil in the world? Is torturing a person for years any less inhuman than beheading somebody? Which would you choose for yourself? Is evil the justification for more evil?

      It hasn't been necessary for terrorists to attack us again because they accomplished everything they set out to accomplish with the first attack. They brought us down to their level, they bankrupted us as a nation financially and morally.

      The Bill of Rights was written for humans to protect them from authoritarian moral degenerates.

      You are confused, cowardice is not synonymous with fear, it is revealed in the surrender to fear, the surrender of rational thought and principle.
