- inactive, on 06/14/2009, -1/+132these figures do not take into consideration those who are too retarded to operate a phone
- brianatlarge, on 06/13/2009, -0/+122This is probably the same number of calls they would have received on February 17.
- inactive, on 06/13/2009, -0/+121Even stupider. You will notice those 700,000 called the FCC. I can only assume a handful called 911.
- boober86, on 06/13/2009, -3/+115Are people that stupid?
- waydee, on 06/14/2009, -0/+108I live in Scotland and even I knew the US was to turn off analogue broadcasts.
- nerddtvg, on 06/13/2009, -0/+76I'm just glad those damn countdowns are done.
- venom8599, on 06/13/2009, -4/+65700,000 in a nation of over 300 million? Doesn't seem that bad to me.
- jman583, on 06/14/2009, -10/+59Just look at the president before our current one. How do you think he got elected?
- ichbinladen, on 06/14/2009, -1/+45People are so ***** stupid.
- copypastry, on 06/14/2009, -2/+40Look sir, I'm sorry you missed NASCAR but you should have gotten off your ass 4 months ago.
- superkendall, on 06/14/2009, -0/+35This is why it was stupid to delay the transition. All it did was cost a lot of businesses a lot of money and did nothing to help consumers - the people who were going to be confused then are just as confused now.
You can't spend enough money to fight an almost willful level of ignorance. You just have to ride it out, which at last we are doing. - w00tdigg, on 06/14/2009, -6/+40Should be retitled "Nearly 700,000 people are complete idiots"
- AZRoboto, on 06/14/2009, -1/+32That is awesome. We waited four more months for this ***** to be done with so these people would be ready, and no surprise, they weren't!
- bob1029, on 06/14/2009, -1/+27We had a few SUPER-PISSED (yes, all caps) customers who wanted to return their brand-*****-new hdtvs because they thought they wouldnt work with the digital signal. Of these I would say half had DirecTV HD, Uverse, or Comcast service. Now I knew there was going to be some drama, but if you can't call the phone number, talk to a smarter friend, visit a website, or simply WATCH the goddamn commercial then I would really appreciate it if you simply stopped existing.
- venom8599, on 06/13/2009, -0/+21Sometimes you need a new antenna, in other cases, the antenna you were using to get analog signals will work fine. Make sure you've rescanned the channels--since some channels moved their digital signal after they shut off the analog transmitter. Then there's also a few odd situations--my local NBC affiliate is broadcasting temporarily on a low power digital transmitter for about a week, so I've lost their digital signal (really annoying since I was getting the digital signal before, and then couldn't watch the Stanley Cup Game 7 last night in HD).
- inactive, on 06/14/2009, -0/+19I work in a call center. I'm just gunna go ahead and say, people are even stupider. They're going to be getting calls about this in a month from people who "just didn't have the time" to call into a 24/7 hotline.
- Ne007, on 06/14/2009, -0/+19What's this thingy? My TV doesn't work.
- kolobcreek, on 06/14/2009, -0/+18Lets hope these people can't figure out how to vote either.
- petard, on 06/14/2009, -0/+18Should have done that a couple months ago.
- redfan, on 06/14/2009, -1/+18Even if you just count households, which is about 111 million, it's a rate of just 0.6 %
- ByteGuerilla, on 06/14/2009, -0/+16I can't believe me missed out on this opportunity to exploit random genetic mutations that would eventually make our species resistance to slippery roofs and 20ft falls.
- inactive, on 06/14/2009, -0/+15On every local station they were running at least 2 ads an hour about it.
- inactive, on 06/14/2009, -0/+14You're joking right?
- rugabug, on 06/14/2009, -0/+14You made me literally laugh out loud at 4am.
- delusionz, on 06/14/2009, -1/+15hahahahaha
- TabDelineated, on 06/14/2009, -0/+13eh, sell them to someone in a country that hasn't swapped to digital yet, there are plenty out there.
- lacrimosa2008, on 06/14/2009, -0/+13What will happen when the UK and Ireland switch from left-hand to right-hand traffic?
- makotech222, on 06/14/2009, -1/+13Well, your username explains your comment. Just because you were lucky to recieve a good education and a nice home, doesnt mean everyone else has as well. Feel free to generalize the whole continent of africa as well.
- ByteGuerilla, on 06/14/2009, -0/+12Ireland has a pretty cunning strategy for that, actually. They're doing a stepped migration, so on May 5th 2011 all the lorries, tractors, and public service vehicles will switch over to the right, and then they'll give that a week to work out its kinks, and then they'll switch all the private cars and light goods vehicles over.
- RoboRay, on 06/14/2009, -1/+13Nothing to worry about. The government will provide a 100-euro coupon to help offset the cost of converting your car from right-side to left-side drive. Limit of two per household.
- jmhyer51, on 06/14/2009, -3/+15My grandmother is nearly 80 and couldn't even find her address bar when I was trying to coach her through Internet Explorer.
She hooked a DTV box up, no problem. - jaxter2010, on 06/17/2009, -1/+12What I don't get (maybe this did this I don't know) is why not, rather than just pull the plug on the antennas, broadcast a screen splash explaining that broadcasts on the frequency are terminated, and you need a DTV box.
- Kanten, on 06/14/2009, -0/+11You would think if these people actually WATCHED TV they would have seen one of the 700,000 commercials that aired in the past two years.
Guess I was right when I said pushing the February date wouldn't make a bit of difference. - inactive, on 06/14/2009, -1/+12They delayed it simply because lat adopters would have to bee on their roofs in February A lot of people would have slipped off the roof and such.
- b1ffr43p, on 06/14/2009, -1/+12That's it, I'm killing myself.
- chroko, on 06/14/2009, -0/+11http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx
...put in your zip code and it'll tell you what channels you can expect to receive - and what type of antenna you'll need to get them. See also: http://www.dtv.gov/ and http://www.fcc.gov/mb/engineering/maps/
The digital transition went well for me - it turns out I live within 2 miles of the nearest two transmitters. With a $39 antenna indoors, I get 21 over-the-air digital channels, with several networks in 1080i with surround sound. And no more paying for basic cable TV. - AngelBunny, on 06/14/2009, -3/+14700,000 out of 17million? So, 1% of this country is officially idiots. Honestly, that isn't to bad. I expected worse.
- GeekNurse, on 06/14/2009, -2/+13A lot of those 'idiots' are elderly people who are not as technologically savvy as you.
- SirBruce, on 06/14/2009, -2/+1217 million was the estimated number of households that need the converter boxes, Einstein.
- inactive, on 06/14/2009, -0/+10Unfortunately, in order for that to be useful, you have to be able to read.
- w00tdigg, on 06/14/2009, -3/+13Obvious troll is obvious
- Johnbinarystar, on 06/14/2009, -0/+10Lots of people have been calling our library wanting to know "where is the big switch" on my TV. The american educational system has produced a nation of dumbed down fools. The movie "Idiocity" is no longer fiction.
- phyx726, on 06/14/2009, -0/+10I had to buy and install Digital to Analog converter boxes for my whole family. I guess I'm the stupid one, not my aunts and uncles.
- Flashypoo, on 06/14/2009, -3/+12I'm a Radioshack employee. I'm surprised it was only 700,000. Most of these people are ***** stupid. Nothing about this was complicated.
- SimonWatson, on 06/14/2009, -0/+9hahaha, yeah right now there's people sitting there with nothing but static on there screen wondering wtf is going on.
- marytormey, on 06/13/2009, -3/+12This was not will planed, an additional antenna is needed even if you have a box (we live on the forth floor and still need an antenna. Our first flour neighbor lost his signal even with a box and a digital antenna. Our microwave even messes up our signal. We do get more channels now and the picture is much clearer.
- Hefelumpman, on 06/14/2009, -1/+9Idiocracy.
- liuite, on 06/14/2009, -0/+8they are technically challenged. seen plenty back in the days when I fixed PC issues. these are the same people who can't figure out what to do if their mouse or keyboard got unplugged, or if they PC froze up; they also rely on others to hook up a DVD player to TV.
- jarjarwang, on 06/14/2009, -1/+8Do you have any hanes?
- linagee, on 06/14/2009, -0/+7Try hitting it over the top a few times.
