No mention of digg. - diggitydank, on 10/12/2007, -24/+257They are free to say what they want to say in the same way I am free to boycott them if I do not agree with what they say. People need to go back to school and learn a little something about freedom of speech. It does not prevent me or any other private enterprise from telling you to shut up. It prevents the government from punishing you for what you say (it is arguable whether or not the US government still allows us this freedom, though).

- shadus, on 10/12/2007, -10/+120From the Article:
"Police said they had received no immediate reports of any vandalism or threats from the Khetani family."
Duh. Computer people are more than happy to harass someone who's been an ass but most are not such huge rednecks that they're gonna go firebomb someones house. - m3mn0n, on 10/12/2007, -7/+96The business owner and his family shouldn't have to suffer for the stupidity of one ex-employee.
Continuing to harass them is simply juvenile and unnecessary.
They did the right thing here. There isn't anymore need for hate mail, calls, and etc. - repins, on 10/12/2007, -7/+88@Avili
Yes you have a right to say whatever you want, but there are consequences to what you say. Besides the response to this has all been other people exercising their right of free speech as well.
The moral of the story, everyone has a right to free speech not just the people you agree with - sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -5/+79The original story and discussion:

thats good and now the family and the business should be left alone since they personally had nothing to do with it. - Liam76, on 10/12/2007, -23/+83diggitydank
"It prevents the government from punishing you for what you say (it is arguable whether or not the US government still allows us this freedom, though)."
Really?
Who has the govt shut up? Google 9/11 and you will find hundreds if nto thousands of sites accusing the US and Bush specifically for masterminding, or at least having knowledge of the terrorist attacks.
How many thousands of protestors have waved "impeach Bush," or "Bush is the terrorist" .
Freedom of speech is alive and well. - imants, on 10/12/2007, -12/+69You guys throw the term "freedom of speech" around all the time. While, yes, we all do have freedom of speech, you should take a Constitutional Law class and learn that it does have its limitations.
- bouche, on 10/12/2007, -1/+47what's with the headline implying that "Diggers" made the news? that's quite a selfish take on the article.
- Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -10/+54From TFA:
"Bargain Suppliers, an online retailer, shut down its Web site Monday and fired the unidentified employee who sent the e-mail, television station WTMJ reported."
Good. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39To some people, Digg.com IS the internet, and all other sites exist to feed it.
- kent1146, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33"There's no such thing as middle-ground anymore"
Completely disagree. There are plenty of moderates out there. LOTS of them (I am one of them, as is my wife, sister, brother, parents, in-laws, etc). The only thing is that moderates never get any media time, so the only thing you see is extreme opinions being broadcast over the airwaves. - LostOnion, on 10/12/2007, -21/+50You're absolutley right. Unfortunately America has become a nation of haters.
- Hubris, on 10/12/2007, -5/+34h00paj00 - just because the business is owned by Muslims doesn't mean they would treat the situation differently than anyone else. An employee acted inappropriately, it got bad press and hurt the business, and the employee was fired. Don't make an assumption like "Muslims always protect their own", or that the business would risk allowing word to circulate that the employee was seen working there again. Muslim businesses are out to make money just like everyone else....and this has been bad for their business.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30you fail to understand the psyche of a 12 year old, aka the average digger
- roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -13/+39I think its funny.
They aren't in any real danger...Americans in general won't get violent about something like this. We have learned over time that these things are best handled by shaming the person and making them uncomfortable. There are bad apples, of course, but those are the minority.
Its not like we would storm an Embassy over a drawing of muhammed in a comic or anything, that would just be barbaric.
I think the pressure being put on them is reasonable. They have every right to free speech, and everyone else has that same right, to tell them how they feel.
I think its funny though, that the group says they are "nervous" ... they are nervous because they know that in their home countries, an insult like this would probably lead to their death. - zydeco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23I think the real moral of the story is that people are always 100% braver behind a keyboard than they are in person. This story was an example of that on both sides, the employee AND the diggers.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23The BBB has no teeth. Maybe once it did, in the 1970s. Nowadays, it's a joke, and nothing gets done.
Maybe if the BBB made the news about the worst offenders they'd be able to do more than gum the offenders and send sternly worded letters. - moke, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22Damn ... this sucks. First thing they should do is arrest the person who sent the picture of the house of "Muslim" owner.
So radio station "kills" a person, people get fired and everything is fine ... Muslim owners employee sent an email, got fired because of it and that's not enough????? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21@avili:
"what about Freedom of Speech? Regardless of the comment, does not everyone have the right to say what they want?"
You are free to say what you want, but you are not immune from having other voice their opinion of you and your opinion. That is the beauty of free speech. It works both ways.
Dumbasses like yourself would claim free speech for yourselves and restrict the speech of those who do not aggree with you. - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16The self-congratulation and back slapping that has enveloped Digg recently is pretty sad, in my opinion. Yeah digg has a lot of users, but it's not 'the internet'.
- catalysis, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21@frduffy
"It includes Abortion opponents too near clinics"
So, you want to protest on-site but you think abortion opponents shouldn't have that right? Thats called "restriction of free speech". - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15@ophilye:
If they are getting death threats, why did the police say they had not received any reports of death threats? - pmichaelson, on 10/12/2007, -16/+30Not a nation of haters; a nation of easily-led sheep. Such is the nature of an over-populated country/world. There's no such thing as middle-ground anymore; it's all either one extreme or the other. Just look at the U.S. political system. It's all a joke.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21How many times has someone gotten screwed royally by some sleazy business, posted the story on the internet, having it gain so much popularity that the shady business owner was harassed into making the situation right? I know of two occurrences off the top of my head. That should be a lesson, too. When you get screwed, posting your story on Digg will probably get more results than complaining to regional managers, writing letters, or contacting the Better Business Bureau.
I wonder if one day the internet will get so powerful it will be worshipped, or even become self-aware. Then, it shall rise and destroy the RIAA/MPAA, Fox News, and Michael Moore forever. There is one god called internet, and piratebay is its prophet! - lnf69, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16You're quite sure the owners were not born in USA? Or maybe you're a Native American? Either way it's comments like that and ppl who make them seriously that ruin what is truly great of our country. Please try to be less ignorant, please.
- greatbigbrain, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16What enrages me is that the two news outlets whose articles have been linked from digg (Fox "News" and most recently MSNBC) both mention the fact that it's a Muslim-owned company. Imagine if it had been Joe American's company? Would the story then read "a Christian of American descent"? Highly unlikely. Of course Muslims oppose the war and the Bush war mongers. Big deal some random dude told them to leave Iraq. They should leave Iraq. This story isn't news, it's hate mongering.
- ringo380, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12@MacGyver2210
No. He means brusque: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/brusque
Brisk is more like what you'd use to describe walking at a fast pace. Or iced tea. - lnf69, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@nanb,
ok, I just read the article again. I didn't see anything saying that the soldiers were looking for donations, free mats. I understood that he was trying to buy them online, and before placing an order he was just checking out if they would ship to Iraq.
Anyway, your saying that you are incensed because soldiers don't have everything they need to make life comfortable and liveable during a war. You're upset because the govn't doesn't provide for every soldiers needs?
Face reality, educate yourself, read any book about war, modern or old. That's the way it is in a war!!!
It's ***** war for crissake!!! - UlicBelouve, on 10/12/2007, -12/+21"The original story and discussion:

INCORRECT....
Original story and discussion was on this digg:

That was submitted 6 days ago, not 2. Was (probably) the first one out there, but I guess it isn't news unless it's FOX news. - wedges, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9he has the right to sell or not sell his products to whoever he wants.

- Leave digg. - tophu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6No I think that was the correct choice:
brusque (adjective):
abrupt, blunt, or curt in manner or speech - dslauson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Hold on. Am I the only one who has a problem with this? Some douchebag says some really stupid things. The family-owned company, without hesitation, totally fires that douchebag. But, the internet community, it all it's infinite wisdom and mob justice sensibility, is still going to relentlessly and systematically destroy this family's business. It's fun for them!!!
I really wish people would think long and hard before grabbing their pitchforks and running off on these internet vigilante witch hunts. Real people's lives are involved here. Sure, that one guy who wrote that response should be forced to wear his own ass as a hat, but come on. This is going a little far. - Schmitty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8It's business. The guy should not have replied to a request for their product like that, that is a major breach of good business practice. I can understand if they guy has views about the solider's presence in Iraq, but when he replied he was representing the business, not himself. It amazes me when righteous hot-heads get it into their bone balloon that it's perfectly okay to voice their opinions about issues in completely inappropriate forums. Yes, the guy lost his job, but now the owner has to deal with a backlash that he had nothing to do with, save perhaps not filling a gaping hole in his company's sensitivity training.
- Hateyou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I respect their right to say what they said (Freedom of Speech and all). But then they have to respect my right to get really pissed about it. Certain actions have consequences regardless of whether or not they are legal.

" All of the research I have done shows this to be a one or maybe two man operation. A search of the workers compensation database shows no company by that name listed. That means either they don't pay out over $500 a year to employees, or. . . they have no employees. I very much doubt the assertion that someone has been fired. The rest of the media has just accepted this story and moved on. I have placed calls today to both Faisal Khetani and Sajid Nasir (the person listed in the article as the vice-president of the company) and have yet to get a phone call back. " - Arch77, on 10/12/2007, -21/+27I'm so tired of these asinine blow-ups over the war in Iraq. Everyone knows it's a retarded war, yet people get offended when someone of the wrong color or religion says it is. Grow up people. The war sucks -- sure, the employee shouldn't have said what he said, but don't go on a witch hunt now because of a "Republican" "fundamentalist" shame deep down in your heart. Patriotism does not equal blind faith. It's like the nerd who keeps beating people up for pointing to the "kick me" sign he has stuck to his back.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"You can't refuse to sell something as a walmart employee."
Sure you can...the morning after pill.
::badabump:: - yesurbius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7So... suppose an NRA member walks into Wal*Mart and wants to buy a rifle cabinet so he can safely store his collection. The Wal*Mart employee tells him to get out of the store because he believes in gun control.
Would the employee get fired? Would he get threatened and harassed? Would he possibly be at risk?
If the answer is Yes - then this article is not about race or muslim persecution - its about bad customer service.
If the answer is No - then we need to rethink how Freedom of Speech applies to all people - not just some - lnf69, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'm sorry to hear that the owner is being harassed by the locals.
- ubuwalker31, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"The business owner and his family shouldn't have to suffer for the stupidity of one ex-employee."
I dunno...I don't think this was a large business. It probably is a family run business, and the employee who was fired was probably a relative or close friend. It is not much of a leap of logic to assume that the business owner agrees or tolerates the view of this employee. Digg me down, but most people feel that this is true, at least on a gut level. The store owner should have given the name of the offending clerk to the press and subject him to the humiliation, not himself. That leads me to believe he is protecting someone. Nuff said. - truck87bp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@42kami
The backlash came because it came from a business from inside the USA. It was not even expected by a serviceman from abroad trying to buy something from his own country.
If you want to disrespect someone, point it in the direction Washington DC but not to a Serviceman. They are only doing their job by trying protect your freedom to be Christian. If they were to come home right now, 9-11 will look like kids play to what might happen the future. Look, I don't like the war anymore than you but I can't help but think of the 12 million blue stained fingers that voted for a better future.
42kami What do you have to say to those 12 million people, we would like to hear. - LeberMac, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Naw, story is true. It's all over the radio and media here. People know where this guy lives and are driving by, apparently he operates the business out of his home. Getting lots of press mainly because the owner has a muslim-sounding name, "Faisal Khetani who is an American Muslim of Pakistani descent according to Fox News...."
It was a stupid thing to say in an email, the employee's been canned, and the business is probably DONE now because of it.
And you're right - no mention of DIGG in any of the local Milwaukee media. Explaining social networking or bookmarking is apparently beyond the ability of most of these folks. - catalysis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Its a drop-shipping website. The whole point is to not have any employees.
- Darksaber11, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Man, this is disgusting to me. Let the company handle it's own employees if they're acting out of line, it's not the job of any random person with some free time to make people's lives hell because they think they're wrong...
God, our country in really intolerant. -
