Diggers: Help Interpol Get This Freak Pedophile
ap.google.com — PARIS (AP) — He apparently traveled the world sexually abusing young boys, but remained unidentifiable — until now. Police in Europe have unscrambled digitally altered images found on the Internet to reveal the face of a man shown abusing boys in Vietnam and Cambodia.

- SeaMowse, on 10/19/2007, -16/+188I cleaned house for a convicted pedophile just 500 feet away from where I live. He lived with his mommy - the scumbucket. After he got out of prison, he ran a website on the 'net, which I shall not name. He posed as a 15 year old boy, who said he had been sexually abused. Long story short, he now lives elsewhere, and his website has been shut down, along with his MySpace profile and his YouTube account. How does this relate to this article? Always be wary and cautious. There are creeps like this guy everywhere. That is why this douchbag tried to disguise himself. He just might be the guy who's living with his mommy, in a filthy house, just 500 feet from your home.
- Tenlow, on 10/13/2007, -12/+165I think it's a bit unfair to imply that if you live with your parents you're a pedophile.
- MiDri, on 10/10/2007, -12/+98Aye, most digg users live with their parents.
- clothmonkey, on 10/11/2007, -8/+10"Most Diggers aren't over X years old" "Most Diggers live with their parents"
How about this: "Most statistics are made up on the spot"
Back up what you say, please.- GoodDamon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Dude, you fail at jokes.
- towlie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Hang on, I'll just go to the publicly available Digg statistics database and grab those for you.

- clothmonkey, on 10/11/2007, -8/+10"Most Diggers aren't over X years old" "Most Diggers live with their parents"
- SeaMowse, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20@Tenlow - I'm not implying because he lived with his mother, that made him a pedophile. He IS a pedophile. A registered pedophile - who happened to live with his mother. He also was a disgusting, filthy pig. His mother never lived like that before she became sick and had to rely on him to take care of her. That, and the fact that his elderly mother didn't have a clue of what he was doing.
- MiDri, on 10/10/2007, -12/+98Aye, most digg users live with their parents.
- DontGiveADamn, on 10/13/2007, -4/+10In San Diego you can check a web site to find registered sex offenders in your neighborhood. When I looked I found that there were many living near me. Then I checked other neighborhoods in the city and found they were all loaded with sex offenders. Bottom line, these guys are everywhere.
- hiswarlockness, on 10/10/2007, -4/+42That's because you can end up on the sex offender list for (for example) ***** a 17-year-old when you're 18, peeing on the side of the highway when you can't get to the bathroom, or telling a coworker she looks nice in that suit.
Ah, the sex offender list. Tells you everything about the people on it except why they ended up on the list.- eclipxe, on 10/10/2007, -3/+21Usually the lists do tell you what they are convicted of. Like "annoying a minor" or "forcible rape". FYI.
- mythicflux, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11And the high point if idocracy for that list is that it has two categories: Dangerous and Extremely Dangerous. (And I'm not joking)
- Roryking, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4dude, if "annoying a minor" is a crime, then I've got hell to pay for my antics on Garry's Mod
- flashingcurser, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19Here in montana people have to register as a sex offender if they have been caught picking up a hooker. States need to separate "dangerous to children" from the dumb ass who picked up a hooker. Prostitutes have to also, it is almost completely useless.
- BabyWookie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Damn... Remind me not to pick up any hookers next time I'm in Beaver Hole, MT.
- ricree, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1http://www.mapsexoffenders.com/
It seems to be down at the moment, but when it's working it lets you look at the sex offender lists using google maps. - vornan19, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If the community does not verify the address or properly track the Pedophiles then every/any list is out of date. All you can really know from the lists is whether a Pedophile is registered as living near you.

- picsectionpleez, on 10/13/2007, -20/+11Your comment is nothing but old Salem style witch hunt FUD. Did this guy try to rape you or hurt you in any way? I don't see how you have a dog in this hunt, other than mob style blood lust.
- SeaMowse, on 10/13/2007, -9/+16No assclown. But this guy sexually molested 3 kids - which is why he spend 3 years in prison. After he was released from prison, he started a website, telling everybody he was a 15 year old boy who was sexually abused, and as a result, was bi-sexual. He also said that he liked to be spanked. He had pictures on his website of young boys - in speedos and in other positions that were borderline porn - just enough for him to get away with it. He also sold rare 'boy movies'. The bottom line is, his website was shut down, for all of the obvious reasons. His MySpace account was shut down recently, when MySpace 'cleaned house', so to speak - deleted the accounts of all sexual predators. His YouTube account also had 'boy movies', and was shot down as well. I find your comment highly offensive and totally stupid. It appears as though you are siding with this disgusting piece of work. You are no better than he is, or this sexual pr editor that Interpol is looking for.
- KyleGoetz, on 10/10/2007, -15/+10So let me get this straight. He broke the law, paid his due to society. So his illegal acts are effectively nullified as far as I'm concerned.
Then he made up a fake online profile?
The only problem I see is his vending of pedophilic films, but you didn't even say he did that; you made some fague reference to "boy movies," which could include "The Blue Lagoon" for all we Diggers know.
More like you are no better than the Salem Witch hunters or the people who create the No-Fly list because if your name is Mohammed you MUST be a terrorist.
As far as I'm concerned, once you've served your time, your crimes are nullified, as you've paid your debt to society. Stop being a vindictive little ass and tell us why we should care that a guy who properly served his time is now free.- SeaMowse, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12Once you served your time, you owe it to society to show that their tax dollars are at work, and reformed this individual. A website that shows pictures of scantily clad juvenile boys is catering to this crowd of people - pedophiles. Obviously, there is something very wrong if this website were shut down. The website also gave instructions on how to remove 'things' from your computer, so that it could never be detected, if something 'bad' were to have been downloaded.
'Boy movies' - if you visit some of the 'boy love' websites, they are a big hit. My worry is that there were pictures of young boys - boys that looked like boys from your neighborhood. Riding bikes, wrestling, etc. My concern is - did their parents given consent for this man to upload pictures of these boys, to be displayed on his website? A website run by a bi-sexual, 15 year old boy, who likes to be spanked? What's wrong with you people? - natedouglas, on 10/13/2007, -3/+12***** paying his debt to society. No one owes a debt to society. What he owed was a debt to the three kids he ***** up.
- jangeador, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1AMEN!

- mrFREEZE, on 10/13/2007, -3/+19The problem with making fun of pedophiles on the internet is that they use the internet too and will come in and defend them.
The majority of pedophiles (for whatever reason, psychological or physiological) don't get "cured" by doing 3 years in prison. Chemical castration, however, that's a different story.- littlebylittle, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1Screw chemical castration. I'm in favor of the real thing in cases like this freak.
- StarlessKnight, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1@mrFREEZE: Just as soon as they fix the Capital Punishment system, *then* we can talk about Chemical Castration.

- geddon, on 10/13/2007, -7/+5You should do Anti-Terrorism Campaigning for the Bush Administration. THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!!!!
- PhoebusApollo, on 10/13/2007, -2/+4Unlike the terrorists, pedophiles actually ARE everywhere. Chances are you know someone who is a pedophile or has been affected by pedophilia. Really, rooting out pedophilia would be a better initiative than the Department of Homeland Security - it's more important than wiretapping and finding out who checked out library books. It's a better national priority than a War on Drugs, and a much more important for our courtrooms than senseless civil infractions like prosecuting copyright law. It should be a higher national priority.
- geddon, on 10/13/2007, -1/+2It's a sad thing, don't get me wrong. Rape, murder, racism -- we've got issues to deal with, but the ones that involve nuclear weapons clearly need to he handled first.

- MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/10/2007, -7/+14Some people are falsely accused of this crime and are ruined for life.
- PhoebusApollo, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3The bigger problem is that we ignore REAL accusations. It hurts someone circumstantially to be falsely accused, and usually false accusations don't make it to the courtroom, but it actively hurts many people to ignore an accusation. These guys are habitual offenders, and society generally ignores the problem in all but the most serious situations. In fact, I deny that you could find a case where someone was "ruined for life" based on a false accusation of this sort, or that you could even find a case where someone was shown to be falsely accused. That's because we under-report and under-investigate this issue, not the other way around.
- lime148, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3http://digg.com/offbeat_news/Man_Falsely_Accused_o ...
- thailand1972, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2This is the usual feminist denial that false accusation is nothing to worry about and isn't prevalent. It's very easy to give a false accusation, especially if it enables you to win custody of your children, or you want revenge on an ex-partner. The problem is, stereotypes of what a pedophile is, are inaccurate. The most likely child abuser is actually the mother - this includes physical abuse (not just sexual). Stop stereotyping (you refer to "guys" only).
- littlebylittle, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1Except when they post their ***** online. Off with his head. And all the catholic priests who have done the same thing.

- themastersb, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1I think it should be kept in a 10 year range at most. So that would then make me able to go as young as 9 year olds. Also I agree it does seem a little different when putting it how Over90000 sees it.
- Mikhail101, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2wow did u just say u wanna do it with nine year olds, u are ***** sick in the head. 20 year olds can abuse 10 year olds???

Read this, your cruise control for coolness should be fixed.- MarkOfTheDead, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Best idea all day.
From Wikipedia:
In 2006, Pieter Hintjens began a campaign to remove the caps lock key from the standard keyboard layout. While the vast majority of manufacturers continue to produce keyboards which include a caps lock, some have removed it. One Laptop Per Child computers, for example, do not have a Caps Lock key.
Nice, potential internet retards will now have to work twice as hard to look equally as stupid. I like this.- buyvalve, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I wonder if it would actually be twice as hard. Does pressing down with your little finger use twice as much energy as not doing anything?
- MarkOfTheDead, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You're holding down one key while you press others, but who's really getting hung up on specifics?

(1) "The 12 boys have not been located"
(2) This man has not been tried in any court
(3) He was presumably in Thailand (where there is a thriving sex tourist industry)
(4) His picture was reconstructed from a digitally altered one
(5) What the ***** does Interpol have to do with someone they don't even know is even from Europe or ever even been there?
It sounds like Interpol trying to bank on the United States' modern day pedo witch hunt. Not that I'm against these child rapists but c'mon- Interpol has nothing to gain from this but notoriety and excitement.- TKDEE, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8They have pictures of SOMEONE with 6-12 year old kids. That means there are children that were being abused, and they are trying to find the person that was abusing them. I don't know how you can call that a witch hunt, regardless of if you don't know who the children are or have an accurate picture of the abuser, you know that these are children being abused and I'd hope that all authorities would do their best to stop that.
As far as being in Thailand, what difference does that make? There's a thriving sex tourist industry there, so everything is ok? That's *****, abuse is abuse, and children in Thailand are every much as human as children everywhere else. No it's not ok to go to Thailand to get an 11 year old prostitute, and yes you are still abusing children if you do that.
Finally as far as digital reconstruction goes, it's really not that hard. If you gave me a couple of days I could probably un-whirl a picture like that just using matlab, and I haven't done too much image processing in the past 3 years. Anyone who's career it is to do this should be able to do it very easily. It really wouldn't be that hard. Even the AP was able to do an ok job getting the face with commercially available software. Yes I think the picture is reliable, especially if you got the same results over 6 pictures. - PhilLesh69, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Interpol is an "international" police organization. They aren't a European police force, much the same as the UN is not an American organization just because it's headquartered in NYC.
Of course, Interpol is just a clearinghouse of information for National and local police forces around the world. They are obviously trying hard to slowly morph into a real police force with arresting powers and whatever else will make them feel more important and powerful, but as of now, they are simply a database and interchange of information. - MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6"Not that I'm against these child rapists"
Haha, OK good, wouldn't want them to be stopped or anything... :)

- NikoKun, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4For all you people, who want to arrest... kill... stop... or whatever... to ALL pedophiles... keep this in mind... They can't control what they are attracted too...
As long as they don't harm any real children, we shouldn't care at all about what they like to imagine... -_-
It doesn't matter what you think is disgusting, as long as they didn't harm anyone, they haven't done anything wrong.- RxDaniel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1If all they do is imagine it then we have no way of knowing they are a pedo. If they look at pictures then they are supporting the people who are abusing the children and that is harming someone.
- metric7, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2So how do you cope?
- ophello, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5the problem is pedophiles who act on their urges. i personally believe they are entitled to fair trial and, if they were just looking at pictures, rehabilitation and psychological help. demonizing them as monsters is inhumane.
pedophilia should be treated as a reversable psychological condition, not an incurable insanity, worthy of a death sentence or a lifetime of "sex offender" (effectively a death sentence).
however, if they ever lay a hand on my kids (im sure ill have some one day), they'll have to burn for it.

- louiedog, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13There was a post on Boing Boing last night and there were instructions on how to undo the twirl. There was a step or two extra at the beginning, but it's basically just twirling in the other direction.

- ampledismantle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10You have to use the Elliptical Marquee Tool to outline the twirl, then use the Twirl filter in the reverse direction. The better you marquee the outline of the twirl, the less distorted the face comes out.
- DiggzDE, on 10/10/2007, -1/+31"Using techniques that neither they nor Interpol would discuss, German police produced identifiable images of the man from the original pictures."

- justinjstark, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7You are obviously going to have some loss of information when you twirl. A lot of the pixels are stretched, some are completely removed or mixed with others. I'm sure they used some sort of mathematical algorithm to reconstruct the image reversing the twirl effect and then "guessing" the original pixels.
- Kenelm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I saw it on French news yesterday, and they used Photoshop. I'll try to see if I can find yesterday news on Youtube or Dailymotion. They called it "advanced imagery technique", but it was just Photoshop, I recognized the toolbar and the layers panel on the screen they showed the way they did it.
- leksdraven, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14Whoever tried to scramble the original image was just an idiot. All they did was move pixels around in "swirly" fashion; thus giving the effect of the swirling abnormality. All the investigators had to do was "unswirlify" the pixels (which was probably non-trivial) and BAM! you have the sick bastard staring back at you.

Then divide them with electric fences.... pervs, druggies, etc.... then... once (and only once a year), the gates
go up, so they can "mingle". Maybe we should take George's advice on this.

- TKDEE, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Posting a picture of you and accusing you of something is very different than posting a picture of you DOING something. There should be no debate as to whether or not SOMEONE is guilty of this horrible crime. - KyleGoetz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Seriously. Just email Adobe and ask politely for the algorithm under an NDA so you can catch a pedophile. - justice7, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14I find this story actually quite amazing for a couple of reasons. Getting a major site such as Digg to view the image, leads to the immediate profiling of millions of people instantaneously. While it is random, someone may recognize him. Secondly, the ability to undo the image swirl is quite an amazing feat, and they've done a great job at it. I hope we (as in the international community) catch this scumbag, thus i'm digging this story.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interpol#Methodology
Interpol agents armed with the latest in laser weapons, undetectable poisons and other secret advanced technology devices work in intricate disguise to identify and eradicate international fugitives world wide. Suspects on the agencies 'Black List' are open for assassination at any time. Interpol agents and operatives carry out these assassinations, which are made to appear as accidents or suicide whenever possible. A routine agent, on average, carries out one or two assassination per year. After completing 20 confirmed 'missions' the agent is qualified to retire in France with a life-long pension of around one-million U.S. dollars per year. Compensation for rookie field agents begins at approximately $250,000 per year in U.S. dollars. Agents work alone and their identities are kept secret, even from one-another. French law strictly protects the identity of retired agents, issuing them assumed identities as French citizens for the duration of their lives. Retired agents forfeit their pension and protection if they choose to leave the country. No dual citizenships are allowed.- KyleGoetz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7That's nowhere on the page you linked. It's obviously wikispam, and has been fixed.
- xdamage, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8Actually the most interesting part of the story to me was how they deblurred his face. That's some powerful stuff.
- OttawaMarcin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They probably did a swirl in the opposite direction.
- soot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That's what I was gonna say, all they did was use the counter-clockwise twirl liquefy.
- solid12345, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Problem is this is a sympton of a much larger problem of child sex rings in southeast Asia. Seems to me interpol needs to go after the source of the problem.
- tunapez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Don't be fooled into believing it's an "Asian" problem.

- Prelude76, on 10/10/2007, -1/+36ok, one thing that puzzles me. police didn't want to risk releasing this photo, since the pedos out there might know that unscrambling digital photos is possible, but they decided to do so because they really want to catch this guy.
um, excuse to point out the obvious, by why not just release the final image, and don't mention about how they had to unscramble the swirl or anything else to the media? make the media assume the guy was stupid and forget to blur out his face in some of the photos. The only person who'd know the police had this technology would be the perv. Instead, now the whole world sees before and after, and all pedos out there will simply draw a black box around their face, rather than swirl or other fancy digital effects.
unless i'm missing something, i think the police are tools for making this known to the public.- onewingedangel9, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12If you look at the photo, it is still distorted a bit, and you bet your ass that people would be asking why. Then they would probably have to say anyways.
- uziko, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2no body would care idiot
- purzzzell, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1***** - any picture on Digg "hey, it's photoshoped" "hey, it's altered" - people would see the distortion and be skeptical that he's really the crim BECAUSE they're skeptical of altered photos.
- Prelude76, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1maybe so, because of digg's uber-geek factor, but mainstream media wouldn't notice and/or care, and the perv would be caught, and the method would remain a secret.
now, all pervs know about this, and they will simply resort back to putting black box on their face, rather than fancy swirls or other photoshop tools. a black pixel is a black pixel, and there is no way they could re-produce the face if its been blacked out.
- Prelude76, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1maybe so, because of digg's uber-geek factor, but mainstream media wouldn't notice and/or care, and the perv would be caught, and the method would remain a secret.

- Ladymongoose, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Sorry, but a professional Photoshopper could have 'fixed' the bit of his face left funny-looking when they unscrambled it. I agree that they didn't have to let on to other pedo's how they did it.
- stuffblock, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I could have fixed it using MS Paint. lol
- fitzsimj, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Everyone assumes pedo's are creepy-faced anyway...
- uziko, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2no body would care idiot
- uziko, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Anyone that actually believes that they did it "because they really wanted to keep this guy from harming other children" is a fool. They are just trying to look like they care, but what you said is exactly correct, they are purposely tipping off other people. Really dumb people think that they are "stopping children from being harmed". What a joke.
- KyleGoetz, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Because this photo with the swirl is already on the internet. Pedos have probably seen it with the swirl, so they'd know what Interpol did (unscrambled a swirly tool).
- Prelude76, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6still you let THEM figure it out .. you don't advertise your work.
- fitzsimj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Because, typical of governmental agencies, they don't really have any clue what they're doing when it comes to technology. So when some boob realizes he can plug negative values into Photoshop, they suddenly think it's hot ***** and new to the world. What better way to brag up a few of the top brass than to release an article detailing how clever Interpol is. Of course, anyone who's the least tech-savvy starts laughing at how clearly technologically ignorant Interpol is, but to your average person they seem to be justifiably showing off.
So, nerds and pedo's laughing. General (tax-paying) public impressed. Net: promotions.

- RealHyperX, on 10/10/2007, -17/+3Diggers getting this pedophile may be a little conflicted, keep in mind, most pedophiles are liberals as so are most diggers.
- eviscero, on 10/10/2007, -11/+3HAHAHAHA!
I'm surprised they aren't offering him sanctuary...but am happy their calling for his neck. People like this should be hanged on the news. - ChromaVita, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14And luckily no conservative Republican officials have been in any scandals dealing with under aged boys...
- nedzeve, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Hmmmm? Roman Catholic Church? Yep, you can't get much more liberal than those guys!
- RealHyperX, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2Truth hurts. This is why diggers are digging me down. Last thing you want is digg.com to help catch a pedo. Protect one, hell yea. Watch, as soon as they catch him, there will be a digg story on how it was illegal to search the dudes house or hard drive. Hey instead of digg, lets ask NAMBLA to help!
- eviscero, on 10/10/2007, -11/+3HAHAHAHA!
- Otto, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18>>>"because we do not want to give criminals the opportunity to adjust to the techniques we are using."
Are they serious? Big black square over the face, flatten the image, done and done. Just try and photoshop that back into a face.
They were idiots to release this sort of information. Yes, protect the kiddies and all, but damn, talk about tipping off your hand. I want to play poker against these fools...- bib4tuna, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2*try to

- Tuffy77, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7yeah, what possible reason could there be for publicizing the first (swirled) pic? They could just put out the fixed shot w/o telling what technique they used

- MostNutsEver, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12You see, the Super Adventure Club was founded by the greatest exploere of all time, William P. Phinehas! Phinehas climbed the highest peaks, tamed the mightiest rivers, but every time he got somewhere, he realized that other explorers had beat him to it. Phinehas was depressed, until he realized that if he couldn't be the first to discover places, he could be the first to have sex with the native children that inhabited those areas! Phinehas quickly went down in history books as the first man to have sex with the Aborigine children at Uluru, and the first explorer to bugger all the underage mountainfolk of Nepal. But now the most wonderful part. You see, after having sex with all those children, Phinehas realized that... molesting all those kids... had made him immortal.
