      There is no doubt that Hitler's inner circle knew exactly what they were doing. They (and he) wanted absolute power. And history shows that the rationale (or lack thereof) for one people victimizing another is fairly irrelevant and the source of the prejudice is entirely irrelevant Tyrants will always find a politically weaker scapegoat and claim that eliminating that scapegoat is the only way to solve some social ill.

      I don't advocate Hitler's murder of innocents, but to make it out to be a good versus evil situation is total absolute *****. Jewish ancestered people dominated the early Bolshevik revolution, as well as the first President of the USSR (Yakov Sverdlov), and resulted in the deaths of well over 30 million, with Stalin being one of the few non-Jews in power. Hitler's anti-semitism was simply an extension of his anti-communism. Without Hitler, Communism would have sweeped through Europe even more extensively than it did. Patton understood this and wanted to fight them then instead of retreat after defeating Germany. Needless to say, the majority of people caught spying for Soviet Russia were Jewish, including the Rosenbergs, without whom, the USSR probably could not have built nuclear bombs.

    BTW, Hitler was not a vegetarian. His early biographers were British who reserved the term "meat" for beef exclusively. Hitler did not eat beef as he was into various occult practices, but he ate plenty of pork.

    I think the more important question is how Hitler got to power and why did so many people follow his orders. I think that understanding this point is of more consequence to us all now.

After the end of World War 1, Germans felt hugely betrayed by the terms of the treaty which limited Germany greatly. It was commonly believed that a "stab in the back" by Jews had done this, and without them, Germany would have triumphed in WW1.

    When Germany was prosperous, people might have agreed with this basic idea but didn't really see a need to act on it - Hitler was a political failure in the 1920s. But enter the worldwide economic downturn of the 1930s and suddenly rhetoric against a convenient scapegoat sounded great to a lot of people. The holocaust happened because of widespread hatred of Jews and belief that they were responsible for Germany's woes. If Hitler had died in 1925 the holocaust and WW2 would have happened, just with a different guy at the top. It actually might have been worse if Hitler hadn't been in charge, since Hitler was increasingly incompetent as the war went on.

    Why Hitler specifically became antisemitic is perhaps interesting but ultimately not important. Nearly everyone was antisemitic at the time, and this was deeply intertwined with politics of the time.

If you've ever read any WW2 books or watched the excellent 1970s BBC series "World at War", you know there were a LOT of different forces at work all over the world that sort of coalesced at around the same time and resulted in war. Blaming the whole war and holocaust on Hitler because he was "crazy" is an easy way for ignorant people to explain such a complicated and horrific time, but it's not accurate.

To me, it's just a term that shelters Jewish people from criticism, which is never good. When someone talks about serial killers being white, I don't shout them down as being an anti-Caucasite. He knew he only had a couple good years left and kept pushing harder and harder to win the war while he still had time. It also explains his short attention span and tendancy to fly off the handle. He developed a tremor in his hand that he was trying desperately to keep secret. Early in the war he suddenly stopped making public speeches. If you look at his pictures he's always clutching something or holding his belt with his left hand. He's doing it to hide the tremor.

  • erikfotherland0, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1As a WW2 history buff this is pretty interesting. This whole time period really needs to be opened up and rediscovered. Historians and society in general were too bias by all the propaganda and revisionism that occured during and after WW2. A fresh start is needed to explore all sides of the conflicts from a neutral viewpoint. Throw open the archives, hold a scientific debate on the scale of the holocaust, give the German victims of the Soviet rape epidemic a chance to be heard. Everybody should read Kurt Vonnegut's detailed account of the Dresden holocaust in "Slaughterhouse Five." Because the Allies won the war they ended up writing history and it's difficult separating fact from propaganda. History should be free of those biases. I mean who knows, maybe Hitler would nowadays be considered legally insane and couldn't even be held guilty for Germany's alleged crimes.
  • pennvneff, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I've always found the theory that Hitler might have been part Jewish to be a far more interesting and powerful motivator for his anti-semitic beliefs.

    Regardless what the origins of that hate are, any fascist ideology needs a scapegoat for the people to focus their anger towards. And the Jews happened to be that scapegoat for Nazi Germany.
