- inactive, on 03/18/2009, -4/+72The Governor can deploy the National Guard, at their discretion. The Federal Government should not be deploying troops from any branch.
- barkleydoom, on 03/18/2009, -4/+51Samson has fewer than 2,000 residents (from their 2000 Census). About 600 families. It's probably not beyond the realm of possibility that local police panicked. The gunman killed 10 people (11 if you count himself), burned down a house, shot at a Wal Mart & Piggly Wigly. Shot at random drivers on the highway. He shot and wounded the Chief of Police. Killed two people in a Big and Little Store. He was armed with two assault rifles with high-capacity magazines taped together, a shotgun and a .38-caliber pistol.
I live in Los Angeles and a few years back, a couple of bank robbers were armed to the teeth with assault rifles and bulletproof vests and it took a near brigade of LAPD to finally kill them. First thing they had to do though was find a local gun store and get better weaponry. So when I hear about some small town, I tend to think the cops felt it might turn into a real massacre of it's residents. Not shocking to me if they sent out an SOS to pretty much anyone who could respond.
Obviously they should have sent the soldiers away once the situation ended, but from looking at the photos, they might have had them standing around to help the terrified community feel a bit safer. The soldiers were wearing "Police" markings over their uniforms... - WorldLeader, on 03/18/2009, -4/+49Weird, I live in a college town within a few miles of a large military base and there often are on-duty soldiers patrolling the "college district" late at night to keep drunken altercations to a minimum. There had been a rash of soldier-on-soldier violence in that area so the fort decided in junction with the city's police force to station soldiers in the district to make any person think twice before doing something stupid. It actually worked pretty well and violent crimes in the area fell substantially.
Mind you this is a smaller city in Kansas and only after 12am.. probably wouldn't be appropriate in other situations. - apena89, on 03/18/2009, -8/+48but we voted for change :(
- inactive, on 03/18/2009, -14/+52You dumbasses want to see the streets run red, let the army patrol them. They are trained to do one thing and do it well, kill. At what point did the disconnect happen in this nation that allowed for an immediate drop of 30 or so IQ points?
Troops on the streets will be the last thing you want. Then again maybe you do? Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.
I sure as hell don't want them in my neck of the woods. - Jlaugh, on 03/18/2009, -1/+37Neither Republicans nor Democrats work for us, get used to it or do something about it.

What a load of *****. When will you start banning pools, high school sports and other activities that kill far more people than some deranged lunatic on SSRI drugs ever will? Maybe banning SSRI drugs would be the first step?
How is it that we are the most heavily armed people on the planet yet more die in car accidents than do in gun related crimes? I don't hear anyone looking to ban cars, pools or high school sports. I do not own a weapon that has taken a human life. Can Ted Kennedy say the same for his automobiles?
I also find it interesting that we never hear of averted crimes due to the potential victim being armed. Nope, we are continually fed this load of ***** as though we have to cower in fear of our lives. I don't fear for mine. I don't leave home without my .45 and don't cower in fear when seeing someone other than a uniformed officer carry a weapon. I know if they are carrying it openly, their only goal is to keep themselves and those around them safe. Quit being a bunch of candy asses that wet your pants unless some badged crusader is wearing a piece.
Get people off SSRI drugs and this issue will go away, eventually. How the hell did people bring guns to school and hunt together after school without nary a problem a mere 30 years ago? Nobody ever gave me ***** about my guns since I had no intentions of using them for anything other than quelling the squirrel population.
Fluff and *****. There is no gun I own that will ever take human life until said human decides to take it from me. Should that happen? Game on. - werkerholic, on 03/18/2009, -2/+35Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.

Just remember the beloved "Patriot Act" - cliffzdude, on 03/18/2009, -0/+32Most likely MPs, who are quite often sent out to patrol party districts to keep off duty military personnel in check. They've been doing so for decades... Off duty service people get drunk and disorderly, and either the MPs catch 'em and haul 'em back to base or the police do - and get pissed off when they have to hand over their "arrest" for taking a leak in an alley way to the MPs...
- werkerholic, on 03/18/2009, -5/+31Exactly, be stupid, play stupid and continue to lose your power. That is the plan. While you wait on the newest iPhone the gov't removes your civil rights.
- SpookyET, on 03/18/2009, -1/+25I suspect that they were military police from the state national guard. I reason this because in the photographs, they are using the woodland battle dress uniform and the M-16 A2. The guard are notorious for using older equipment as opposed to front line soldiers which have the M-16 A4 and Army Combat Uniform (the new digital pattern you see worn by the soldiers in Iraq).
- Mpwns, on 03/18/2009, -4/+27remember kids after 10 people the army can join in the hunt.

- inactive, on 03/18/2009, -1/+16Definitely Military Police - watching for drunken personnel. For the Navy, they have Shore Patrol - the guys get out, get drunk... the soldiers are prolly trying to ***** the college girls.

There is historical precedent for keeping soldiers from occupying civilian centers. While this isn't as severe, I hope that if the day comes where our soldiers 'cross the rubicon', our citizens will fight back perhaps more successfully than others have. - o76923, on 03/18/2009, -3/+16Maybe if we didn't send the entire National Guard to guard places outside the nation, we wouldn't have this problem...

- werkerholic, on 03/18/2009, -0/+10Please explain what need for warriors to be there instead of peace officers. Law is law, if rioters were rioting and looters looting then that response would have been correct, period. When people break the law your rights and liberties ARE infringed upon. Not me, just LAW.

That seems to be the standard excuse every time this happens. Propagandists ...errr people said the same thing when Military Police "helped" with DUI checkpoints in Yucca Valley, CA. - bwseaver, on 03/18/2009, -2/+12http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Posse+Comitatus+Act
- maz2331, on 03/18/2009, -2/+11And it dropped another 30 points on Jan 19, 2009.
Actually, it's dropped 30 points after each election we've ever had, slowly built back up 29 of the 30, and repeated the cycle. - aznedy, on 03/18/2009, -1/+10Cognitive Dissonance in....3....2....1.

- wissler, on 03/18/2009, -4/+11They could have asked help from policemen in neighboring cities.
- rd1010, on 03/18/2009, -2/+9I think that they may be authorized to patrol within a few miles of the base as they can loosely justify it as still being a part of protecting the base, etc
- NEWNHLISLAME, on 03/18/2009, -0/+7I just watched the" Obama Deception " and it seems to be a continuation of the Bush policies spawned from a new world order, If the current trend continues I would not be surprised if rioting ensues.
The schemes that have been perpetuated and the lies we have been told will add up to anger at the people responsible for the collapse of our nations. Get ready for a one world government!
ps . It will start with the IMF that is the international monetary fund being responsible for all money in the G20 and others which they basically already are now they will just tell us that is the way it is. - justok, on 03/18/2009, -3/+10I Kent State it any better. Army would never do such things.
- TopKnot, on 03/18/2009, -8/+15Who cares about the 10 people killed...and possibly many more if not stopped. After all, your civil liberties were violated by having troops on the street to contain a minor incident. Now, if there were 12-15 people killed and the killer was still shooting then I'd classify this as an emergency. At this point I'd call on everyone who thought their civil liberties might get stepped on and let them handle things as they saw fit.
Who cares about the following people who were killed in this minor incident:
* Corrine Gracy Myers
* Andrea D. Myers
* Lisa White McLendon
* James Alford White
* Tracy Michelle Wise
* Dean James Wise
* Virginia E. White
* James Irvin Starling
* Sonja Smith
* Bruce Wilson Malloy
Their civil liberties don't matter any more as long as you are snug in your bed. - werkerholic, on 03/18/2009, -1/+8The criminal was a washed out cop. Did you know that cops are more likely to commit suicide rather than get killed in the line of duty. Real ***** if you ask me.
