- Whoopteedoo, on 02/20/2008, -3/+101I don't know about us being conditioned, but the police certainly are! Otherwise, why would so many of them think it's ok to use tasers on unarmed people to shut them up, or keep them from walking away?
There has to be departmental policy for the taser, and if it isn't strictly adhered to, discipline or termination should follow. - theNazz, on 02/20/2008, -6/+100Amtrak now being patrolled by cops with automatic weapons and random bag searches... next comes the big one... "papers please!"... "we demand to see your papers!".
- WeNeedTruth, on 02/20/2008, -20/+113The entire government is out of control!
- jaymzdean, on 02/20/2008, -16/+92One of these days soon, either the victim or a victim's loved one is going to take the law into their own hands and exact justice upon one of these pigs, since the pigs only get reassigned or a paid vacation for assault or assault with a deadly weapon. I hate to say it, but it needs to happen every time justice is not served. This is out of control and it must stop.
- TecHeavy, on 02/20/2008, -11/+67We are all being conditioned: http://digg.com/politics/Fired_officer_Woman_s_bla ...
- jadenton, on 02/20/2008, -0/+56Its not just the cops. Its the district attorneys who don't prosecute them.
- inactive, on 02/20/2008, -4/+59someone needs to make a jacket that somehow sends 1,000,000 volts back down the tazer wires and fries the cop.
- meells, on 02/20/2008, -15/+69I assume that this guy was one of those good cops that people are always telling me exist somewhere. Until he was caught. Just like so many more will be. It reminds me of a quote I heard somewhere, "Everyone is an *****. They just haven't been an ***** to YOU yet." or something like that. My attitude toward police will correspond exactly with thier attitude towards the public: guilty until proven innocent.,
- wholeness, on 02/20/2008, -0/+47Since this is a potentially lethal weapon involved in the deaths of over 300 people police should have to follow the same procedures and fill out the same mountain of paper work as if they fired a gun at somebody when they use it. It should only be used as an alternative in a situation where a gun shot would normally be used.
- bjs3171, on 02/20/2008, -3/+47even if the fight were still going on, why the ***** do you need to send an electric shock through two teenage boys just because they're fighting. believe it or not, fights have existed, and been broken up way before the tazer was invented. atleast 10 years.
- d3lta, on 02/20/2008, -0/+34Wanna know about what cops think of using tazers? Check out these forums: http://forums.officer.com/showthread.php?t=77041 and http://a.imagehost.org/0037/Cop_who_uses_taser_on_ ...
from this digg article: http://digg.com/world_news/Police_Forum_Comments_A ... - philippec, on 02/20/2008, -0/+34I misread the second paragraph and thought the deputy shot at his own son.
- sjl127, on 02/20/2008, -4/+37We just need to be allowed to use them back on police if they're illegally doing something.
- TriZz, on 02/20/2008, -4/+33I keep saying that the taser is the new billy stick, just this time...it keeps happening to white people.
- sindex, on 02/20/2008, -1/+30Tasers need not be banned, Police simply need to be reeled in. Tasers are a good tool when they're warranted, but they are not supposed to be used to simply replace diplomacy and critical thought. But you hire a bunch of meatheads to be your police, tell them they essentially cannot get in trouble for their actions, and this is what you get....
- punisher18, on 02/20/2008, -9/+33first things first. officers before they can even carry one they are tazered themselves . second lets not blame technology for being MISUSED by people. its like blaming a flight simulator game that was used by terrorist to hijack a plan. Dont punish technology people you will only punish yourself in the end. it was the officers fault for going against orders, look to punish stupid people.
- ieataquacrayons, on 02/20/2008, -4/+27Are some people becoming cops just so they can use a Taser? That what it seems like these days...
- esfisher, on 02/20/2008, -0/+20So someone, you know, doesn't drive a train into a building.
- jessehadden, on 02/20/2008, -1/+21Imagine, just imagine, if the situation were reversed. Imagine you tasered a cop just for the hell of it. You'd be lucky to ever see the light of day again.
- ZenFountain, on 02/20/2008, -4/+23Tazing, a new national pastime.
- jmkiii, on 02/20/2008, -2/+20No form of aggression but their own seems acceptable.
- ArchieAndrews, on 02/20/2008, -4/+21Is that Gordon Ramsey in the thumbnail? I would watch his shows again if he started tasing people! Are you listening Gordon?
- cookingboy, on 02/20/2008, -0/+17wow...tasering really has become a national pastime hasn't it....
- NoCt1, on 02/20/2008, -0/+17It didnt have to be said.
- peteboy1, on 02/20/2008, -1/+17I'm telling you people, taze the officers in the balls and they'll stop tazing others.
- mwalker05, on 02/20/2008, -1/+17actually the numbers show that cops are using their guns just as often even though they carry tasers. cops arent using the tasers in place of guns, they are using the tasers in place of doing their job.
- NathanielJ, on 02/20/2008, -3/+19Why does everything have to be a race issue? Lots of white people have been tasered for no good reason, but now it happens to a black kid and it's because of race?
Move on. - cbuddha42, on 02/20/2008, -0/+16The problem is simply that police have too much power, and this story illustrates that well. If you pulled out a taser and shot someone in the chest with it unnescerily (not in defense) then you would be prosecuted for assult right? But what if you disagreed with your boss about how to resolve a situation and went with your initial action a even though he said go for b? Sure, he'd probably expect an explanation, but you certainly wouldn't be facing criminal charges. If you did it enough and he didn't like disobediance or if your decisions we consistantly worse than his, then you might be suspended or fired, but that's as bad as the punishment could get.
Bottom line: We give policemen a huge amount of power and then expect them to accurately manipulate it to suit the needs and wants of multiple diverse groups at a moment's notice. That's simply not pratical. It's especially not pratical when you consider that being a policeman isn't an especially great job and doesn't pay especially well. That means your not even getting the best people; your getting lower blue coller class workers. - Litespeed, on 02/20/2008, -1/+16The cops will need to say it in German to really pull it off - "Ihre Papieren, bitte!"
- psion01, on 02/20/2008, -2/+17I suspect we're also giving cops a more militaristic mindset courtesy of the war on drugs and the post 9/11 mentality. Plus the glorification of cops as good guys vs. bad guys (everyone else). I'll bet you the officer in question of more than a few of these abusive cases has been humming the tune to "COPS" while crossing the line. You're right that there's more chances to collect evidence of abuse now, but the police mindset has shifted from Andy Taylor to Judge Dredd.
- Genesii, on 02/20/2008, -0/+14I think there's something to be said when Cops are safer than the law-abiding citizen. I mean it's great that tasers are saving cops lives, but it seems our legislators are more concerned with their safety than ours.
- rcflyr, on 02/20/2008, -5/+19My brother and father are both in law enforcement. Their departments require them to be tased before they can carry tasers. The newer models include cameras so that their actions can be reviewed to see if a tasing was warranted. I think that tasers are being used in places where they shouldn't. I also think it's unfair to put all law enforcement officers into on group and say that they are all out of control.
- hextic, on 02/20/2008, -1/+14From time to time, the tree of liberty must be refreshed with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
- EntangledPhysx, on 02/20/2008, -3/+16I don't know you you're being dug down. You are correct. If you ban tasers because some idiots don't know how to use them properly, should we also ban all forms of writing utensils, since they are potentially a weapon to use to stab a person? How about banning guns as well, so the law-abiding citizens can no longer defend them selves against attackers/intruders? Tasers shouldn't be banned, but they should be handled as if you had shot a real gun. Tasers arent toys, but that doesn't mean we should ban them. Ban incompetent jackasses who don't have the mental capacity to realize when a taser must be used, not the taser.
- reefsurfer226, on 02/20/2008, -1/+13what the story didnt tell you that the deputy made it legal and ok by yelling "HES HEADING RIGHT FOR US" thus making it ok to shoot anything
- Jlaugh, on 02/20/2008, -1/+13To condition you to accept a police state... err I mean to check if your a mad bomber from Al quada.
- crimson117, on 02/20/2008, -1/+13If only someone in the crowd had a taser to use on that cop before he fired on the student.
- alpinweiss88, on 02/20/2008, -0/+11If he didn't have a taser, it might have been his gun he had drawn. It's the mentality that needs to change.
- inactive, on 02/20/2008, -0/+11Why is David Caruso pointing a taser at someone?
- BrokenVisage, on 02/20/2008, -4/+15Welcome to Burysville. Population: You

- noseeme, on 02/20/2008, -0/+10I think it's necessary, I mean, imagine the catastrophe if a terrorist hijacked a train and drove it into the Empire State building!!!
- StarlessKnight, on 02/20/2008, -0/+10I like the second link, where a commenter says he'd have threatened the pregnant woman to comply with his order with the threat of tasering her husband again. Really, that's some mighty fine police work, there, Lou.
- smotpoker, on 02/20/2008, -0/+9He just tackled him without warning or anything? Did the guy have a gun pointed at you or what? If he did, it seems dangerous if not, the cop should have given warning, period.
If police want/need more respect and cooperation from the public, they need to be held to a higher standard so that they DESERVE it. This means acting above and beyond petty irrational and childish behavior and following the letter of the law more closely than anyone. If they cannot do this, they shouldn't be cops and shouldnt expect or demand respect from the people
Cops can and have easily screwed people out of spite and will continue to do so as long as we all keep turning our heads and ignoring the evidence in your face. Just because it didn't happen to you and you dismissed everyone who said anything similar doesn't mean it can't/never happens. Anecdotal evidence is still evidence and in this country we are supposed to be punished by the courts, NEVER by the cops under ANY circumstance
If you ever seen a suspect who was being still and apparently unarmed get tackled by the cops and you laugh, you are betraying the country and what it stands for, no matter what kind of moron or scumbag the suspect is. He is still american and in this country it is supposed to be innocent until proven guilty and no punishment of any kind until then. Tackling someone can kill or permanently injure them and should be used as a last resort, just like any other physical contact. only when dealing with an unarmed individual who completely refuses to cooperate and poses a direct threat on yourself or others. Otherwise you call for backup and wait for help and restrain or if it's a serious crime if they flee. - CatalystGhost, on 02/20/2008, -2/+11Oh *****, he spelled "taser" with a "Z"! Jesus christ! Kill him!
Seriously, you're dumb. - Andia83, on 02/20/2008, -0/+9Good to know I wasn't the only one.
