uk.reuters.com — The chance to be the caretaker of a tiny tropical island in Australia has sparked so much interest around the world that a rush of applications crashed the website advertising the post. The job, offers a salary of $105,000 to spend six months on the Great Barrier Reef island of Hamilton.

  • cyrix, on 01/15/2009, -1/+11I considered applying when I first heard about it on CNN. After doing some research I realized it's not a job with any kind of security. It's basically a reality contest to draw attention to the reefs and you get to work for 6 months. Yes the pay is great, and the job itself is fantastic....but you're basically just a pawn for a short while and you have to put whatever life you have now on hold with potentially negative consequences afterwards. If there was a possibility for job security if you did well then I'd be all over that. But there isn't. It's just a gimmick.

    What this did do for me however is make me rethink my priorities about where I want to live and what is important to me. Since then I've been looking at jobs in Hawaii, Peru, Brazil, Costa Rica, New Zealand, etc.... There are many places I want to live. I love the ocean, mountain biking, hiking, and many other outdoor activities. And in Pennsylvania I'm really not able to do the things that make me happy as often as I want too. Plus I love doing IT work. So in a way this whole contest is a blessing in disguise for me as it made me really rethink what I was doing and prioritize what I want in my life to make me happy. So for whatever that's worth...

    No it's not. It's an initiative by the Queensland government's tourism office to promote awareness of QLD and attract tourists there. That's why the job is just six months and the person who gets it is required to promote the Hamilton Islands, etc. however possible.
