- Wrangler76, on 07/12/2009, -2/+29I'm pretty amazed that the Washington Post actually wrote a balanced article about the situation. In Canadian news sources, they rarely mention that the Uighur rioters beat and killed men, women and the elderly just because they were ethnically Chinese. They only mention the revenge riots by the Han Chinese or they vaguely mention the death toll, misleading people into thinking the police caused the majority of the deaths.
- TobiasParker, on 07/12/2009, -1/+15I prefer Blood Harvest anyway.
- copypastry, on 07/12/2009, -4/+14Politics and violence aside, that cop looks like a total badass.
- Wrangler76, on 07/12/2009, -1/+11Good grief. Human migration is truly an evil act by the Chinese government. The area was underdeveloped, and the Chinese government developed it. Skilled Chinese workers went west to fill jobs that couldn't be filled by Uighurs because they were not educated and skilled. Governments all over the world do this- in my country of Canada, doctors, teachers, and other skilled workers are paid huge amounts of money by the government to go into less developed areas, such as areas around native reserves. The skilled workers tend to be white while the population they work with tend to be native. Is that some kind of evil government plot to you?
Today, the Chinese government gives Uighurs tax breaks, education subsidies, bonus points on college applications exemption from 1-child policy, etc to help them out and reduce the economic gap. Many Uighurs are educated in Chinese universities and are encouraged to go back to Xinjiang to help out, but they want to stay in the east coast cities.
There are special minority colleges in China that only have 5% of the spots reserved for Han Chinese with the rest going to minorities. In addition to the regular curriculum, the Uighurs can learn their own languages and customs. These collegse are part of the normal university application process and are a CHOICE for the Uighurs.
The fact that you think that Chinese migration into Xinjiang is some kind of evil plot is laughable. If that was their goal, minorities would not be growing much more quickly than the Han Chinese population in China. They would not be exempt from the 1-child policy that middle-class Han Chinese must follow. - magneteye, on 07/12/2009, -0/+10If you're referring to the guy in black in the picture, that is actually a Police Officer. Don't know where you got this "Gangster" thing from.
- Wrangler76, on 07/12/2009, -2/+8"Demographic Invasion". It's called human migration you dolt. The vast majority of Uighurs don't even want to separate. That area has changed so many times that no one truly can say they have ancestral claim to it. Their main complaint is that they cannot get high-level jobs and aren't getting enough of the economic pie that the Chinese are. The spark for the incident is that 2 Uighurs were killed by Han Chinese in a brawl for allegedly raping Chinese girls. They took things into their own hands unfortunately because the police are more lenient on Uighurs (and other minorities).
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -6/+11Why is it when attacks happen in the US or Western part of the world they are called acts of terrorism and when it happens in China they are called riots?
These are terrorists bent on killing all Han Chinese. :-(

The first news reports said the rioters were Uighurs attcking the Han, which they were. Later they said that Han mobs were retaliating, which they were. Which planet are you living on?
- peteryan, on 07/12/2009, -1/+6This article has a very balanced view on this incident, though a lot of Western media are extremely biased.
Imagine the Chinese media call 911 " the revenge of the Muslims, badass US government deserved it" haha - Abatrour, on 07/12/2009, -2/+6Why is it that when the riots in Iran broke out it was all over digg and youtube, but now that its China its not as important?

Whenever I want.
I just haven't had the urge to murder people, steal from stores, or sell heroine on the street.
Yet. - Wrangler76, on 07/12/2009, -2/+5Actually, the Xinjiang population is 40% Chinese. In Urumqi (where the riots took place), the population is 12.8% Uighur. I'd more likely compare this to the LA riots of the 90s.
- taibo, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2Right, this is why Hawaii has riots all the time.

it's a bit frustrating to say the least. - DrJG, on 07/23/2009, -0/+1Tibetans were and are slaughtered or have fled or are treated pretty much like animals to be used - not that different from natives of another continent still mistakenly called Indians so you might feel they have no right to their own lands they were and are pushed out of by settlers - and not every people are forever likely to protest by peaceful means as Tibetans have done in spite of being objects of genocide. Uighurs ethnically are related to central Asia and Tibet and Mongolia, and Chinese are if anything more racist than anyone with ancestral European roots (which you realise when you comprehend they call you foreign devils and barbarians, for being ugly enough to have a non-flattened nose or for having facial hair) - so the reality is this is a protest by Uighurs against the repression by Chinese. Tibet has been all but totally repopulated by imported Han Chinese personnel, while the locals are about as much discriminated against as the "minority" populations in US or in Germany. If you have not heard about Tibetans protesting in Tibet, and have heard about the Uighurs protesting in Uighurs' own homeland, the reason is the Uighurs were en masse killed now when the world is more aware of such goings on and China is a tad less of a US favourite for balance against Russia needed less now that Soviet Russia is broken into pieces. Only a tad, though.
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1I was actually going to use Hawaii as one of my examples- it fits most of the criteria perfectly. We are already seeing demographic annihilation of Native Hawaiian blood; the only reason "the last full-blooded Hawaiian" hasn't been declared like it was with the last Moriori (another Polynesian culture overwhelmed by outside contact) is that it isn't politically correct anymore.

China riots were People vs People while Government tries to keep the peace.
I'm guessing that the big difference is that we understand why the people in Iran had riots but not as much in China. - inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1talking about your previous name, NB. :)
- solid12345, on 07/12/2009, -4/+5Don't really care to comment on who is right or wrong, the only thing for sure is this is what happens when you try to hold onto a province with a completely different culture and ethnicity from the majority population.

- 3tcp, on 07/12/2009, -4/+5Human migration? More like mass resettlement for the purpose of overtaking their culture and justifying their colonial occupation of this area. It is just like the resettlement of israelis in occupied palestinian which has been condemned over and over again by most european countries and the un.
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -1/+2Actually, I was more so commenting on what I was talking about.
Either politically, socially, or work-ethically.
So on this point, I'm referring to work ethics.
I don't believe that american airlines fines its employees. I don't believe that any american company 'fines' its employees. Is this where you were going with that or have you misunderstood me? - inactive, on 07/12/2009, -4/+5hahha figures somebody with a name of 'drugx2' would hate cops.
Weird.

Don't downplay it, human resettlement the kind that Israel or China does is actually a serious Geneva Convention violation. It was a tactic that even the Nazi Germans used to subjugate a population.
As for development, the Uyghurs still have one of the poorest provinces in China along with Tibet, and China is poor itself (<$4000 USD GDP PPP according to World Bank). The Uyghurs are banned from praying at home and all the choice jobs are given to Han Chinese. Note that all the upper politicians and even the Chinese governor of that province is Han, and not Uyghur. What kind of "development" is that?
The old propaganda that China helps "develop" these territories because the local people are "too retarded to develop for themselves" is demeaning and insulting to anyone's intelligence. It's the same excuse the Chinese Nationalists used for Taiwan which was far richer and educated than they themselves were, part of the same one the Chinese government used before trying to invade Vietnam and India. This propaganda is not based in reality. - taibo, on 07/12/2009, -1/+2If excessive fines by one Chinese company = all Chinese people everywhere sucking...
What does excessive fines by all American airlines mean for the American people? - DrJG, on 07/23/2009, -0/+1"These are terrorists bent on killing all Han Chinese."
That will be true when the riots are in Shanghai and the Uighur police are beating up the locals and repressing the news about death toll. Right now the reality is exactly opposite, likely; it is certainly so in Tibet since over half a century. - solid12345, on 07/12/2009, -5/+5Which is what I said, mainland China trying to hold onto a different culture is what led to this, even if the Uighurs started the rioting. Cause and effect.
- acknotSW, on 07/12/2009, -3/+3You don't do anything illegal? You are doing life wrong.
- Wrangler76, on 07/12/2009, -1/+1Haha, Amnesty International also thinks the Dalai Lama is a great guy. Many writers and historians in the West even know that this isn't true. I really can't trust them if most of their accounts are from exiled Uighurs. Exiled Uighurs who reports casualties in the thousands while sitting in Europe nicely.
How is it propaganda? Prove me wrong then. Why was Xinjiang and Tibet extremely underdeveloped until skilled Chinese workers arrived? Proof:
http://www.unescap.org/esid/psis/population/databa ...
As for development, yes Xinjiang is still one of the poorer provinces along with Tibet. Your argument really doesn't make sense: Uighurs don't need Chinese help to be developed, so the Chinese government should stop encouraging investment and migration to that area. Yet, even with Chinese development, the area is one of the poorest in China. Imagine that.
Uighurs are not banned from praying at home. That's the dumbest thing I have ever heard of because it can never even be enforced. There are damn mosques in Xinjiang. If the government wanted to stop Islam, they would first destroy those mosques, not ban praying in one's own home. I think what you meant is that praying is banned in public. This is perfectly reasonable since it may raise tensions between different groups in the area and it is unnecessary.
Uighurs get affirmative action. Many times, jobs in a company will be reserved for them. The factory involved in the riots had actually been forced to hire Uighurs too. Chinese people complain about this all the time. The Uighur leader who was exiled actually was one of the most successful women in China for some time and even made it into Chinese congress. Why should the Chinese government force private companies to reserve upper management spots for Uighurs? Would we accept that kind of treatment for minorities here? Uighurs are already given grants to start their own companies if they choose to. If they want upper management spots, they can earn it like everyone else does. Oh, and the current chairman of the Xinjiang government IS Uighur. His name is Nur Bekri. The secretary of the CPC Xinjiang committee, Wang Lequan, is Han Chinese. That makes sense doesn't it? One of the top-ranked leaders in Xinjiang is Uighur and one is Han Chinese, considering the demographics.
You just Godwin'ed this discussion by the way. - Wrangler76, on 07/12/2009, -2/+2Last I checked, Israel is condemned for bombing near aid vehicles and palestinian civilians. That and settling in Palestinian land, none of which is related to China because, as I said, historically no one lays claim to that land as it has changed hands for hundreds of years. And please provide proof that the human migration was solely for overtaking Uighur culture. How does that work by the way? I wrote a lengthy response in these comments on why the human migratino occurred. It made much more sense than "cultural destruction". We're not in the Mao era anymore.
