- JCEEZ, on 03/23/2009, -0/+8Isn't flying the safest way to travel... statistically?
- inactive, on 03/23/2009, -1/+9That video is amazing, I wouldn't have expected such a huge fireball from an aircraft that was just landing with what I would assume to be significantly less fuel than say, a Jet that had just taken off.
- jshhmr, on 03/23/2009, -0/+8Better video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkUS_u8Zrkc
- dubdope, on 03/23/2009, -0/+8as according to this: http://www.nsc.org/research/odds.aspx
the chances of dying in your lifetime:
pedestrian: 1 in 627
car: 1 in 261
plane: 1 in 6460
of course, the above is for the united states and i'm sure the stats are a little different in, let's say, uzbekistan. - seanstuart, on 03/23/2009, -11/+17Enough is enough. When will we declare an end to this dangerous experiment called "flight?"
- calebian, on 03/23/2009, -1/+7it was the wind
- Tddupre, on 03/23/2009, -0/+5i beg to differ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJbUJk-yLOo - 919kwjc, on 03/23/2009, -3/+8Something similar happened to a friend of mine. He was a FedEx employee hitching a ride on a plane that went down in the South Pacific. Funny story... turns out he survived and lived on a island for years with his friend Wilson.
True story. - unknamed, on 03/23/2009, -0/+4The wind was blowing like crazy..... the smoke was moving parallel to the ground and the water from the firetruck was having a hard time making it to the plane. I'm betting a freak gust of wind is the cause.
RIP FedEx pilots. - inactive, on 03/23/2009, -0/+4i dont see it, actually. I just see the plane on the ground sliding and englufed in flames right at the start of the video.
- zydeco, on 03/23/2009, -0/+4A little bit of fuel mixed with a lot of air can make a spectacular fireball. Look up how a fuel-air bomb works.
- iDiggYa, on 03/23/2009, -0/+4I know! Those crazy American drivers!
/s - Lith25, on 03/23/2009, -1/+5WIIIIIIIIIIIILLLSSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!
- colinnwn, on 03/23/2009, -1/+4Nearly empty tanks are much more flammable than nearly full. Jet fuel doesn't burn as well as jet fuel vapor mixed with air. Now a full tank will fuel a longer lasting and hotter fire. But the fact the plane erupted in flames quickly tends to support almost empty tanks with lots of really flammable vapors.
- rohanluktuke, on 03/23/2009, -0/+3Texas plane crash was a false alarm.
http://edition.cnn.com/2009/US/03/23/texas.plane/i ... - wicketr, on 03/23/2009, -0/+3Planes never land "On empty". They always have hours worth of extra fuel in case of diversion due to bad weather or the need to circle for landing clearance.
A gas tank rupturing at 150+mph will allow the gas to be spread over wide area and be broken up enough (lots of surface area) to cause a huge fireball like that. - yaosio, on 03/23/2009, -0/+3Once again the drive by media refuses to report on the real story of the destroyed packages. Will somebody need to go without a real doll for another week? Will a gamer in Tokyo have to wait even longer for an original English edition of Fallout 3?
- Hydroxyethyl, on 03/23/2009, -0/+3 From what I understand jets take a while to spool up (I am not a jet pilot). Pushing the throttle to the firewall isn't going to get you out of that mess quickly. Once they wheelbarrowed on that first bounce I think they were along for the ride.
- CedEx, on 03/23/2009, -0/+3Horses explode... it depends on what you feed them...
- Amlethus, on 03/23/2009, -1/+4Isn't this the third plane crash story today? One in Montana, Texas, and now Japan.
- jshhmr, on 03/23/2009, -0/+3Where are the Digg pilots at? Would it have been possible to do a go around after that first bounce? The landing looks forced to me.
- JMScheib, on 03/24/2009, -0/+2It's safer than taking a shower.
Also, your name might have something to do with your fear. - crash331, on 03/23/2009, -0/+2I dunno man, something about those odds. I ride in a car every day to get those odds, but I've been on a plane twice in my life. It just scares me.
- MikeDirntRulez, on 03/24/2009, -0/+2I would say you guys (Pilots) did a pretty damn good job of it with the ALPA. Also, you guys get treated like royalty. I used to work at the ONT ramp, and whatever the pilots wanted, we were there on hand and knee getting it for them in a timely manner or we would hear from corporate. You guys are spoiled rock stars.
I understand that they are very anti-union. However, I see where you're going. It is illegal to fire anybody for trying to unionize, and as long as you are doing your job right, they cannot find any way to get rid of you. Every employee knows how to play the game; do your job right, don't cause a fuss, and they have absolutely zero reason to fire you. If you have a bunch of write-ups and then start unionizing, then they have something to fall back on.
To be honest though, I can understand your frustration in being a flight engineer. FedEx and UPS are pretty much the only places that still need you guys, and with FedEx getting rid of the 727s, all you pretty much have left is UPS with their older 747s. I truly wish you the best of luck in your career. - gametavern, on 03/23/2009, -1/+3This is crazy. Easy with the planes guys!
- serif69, on 03/23/2009, -0/+2The Air Force said that the earlier report of the C-17 crash was false, and have called off the search. Disregard my comment. Not that you haven't already...
- MikeDirntRulez, on 03/24/2009, -0/+2Sorry to be so harsh, but FedEx isn't the only company getting rid of flight engineers.
With them phasing out 727s and getting 757s, as well as only having a few DC-10s (The rest being MD-10s and MD-11s which don't need a flight engineer), I don't see why they would keep flight engineers around.
Instead of complaining about them being an evil company, why don't you get certified for another aircraft or something. I'm not a pilot, so I don't know how hard it may be, but you can't expect them to keep you hired when they have no need for you. - calebian, on 03/24/2009, -0/+2ok fine, it was God
- iDiggYa, on 03/23/2009, -0/+2Nice try, but you used facepalm in the wrong context.

http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/learmount/2009/0 ... - inactive, on 03/24/2009, -0/+1I have read some of your previous comments. Honestly speaking, and judging by those comments, if I had an airlines, I wouldn't have hired you even if you were a pilot.
- rohanluktuke, on 03/23/2009, -0/+1What happened to all the fedex packages on board? Can't compare it to loss of human life tho. What happened is very sad.
- iDiggYa, on 03/23/2009, -0/+1That's exactly what I thought of when I read "horses don't explode!"; the episode when Meg races the buggy and horse.
- Andrew10, on 03/23/2009, -2/+3Let's also call an end to cars/busses/bikes/motorbikes etc.etc..etc. while we're at it, But hey i guess car crashes just dont look as spectaculair on video..
- iDiggYa, on 03/23/2009, -0/+1The pilot and co-pilot were American. So why the Japanese?
- inactive, on 03/24/2009, -0/+1A similar incident in 2003 involving a fed-ex DC-10-30 comes to mind. Pilot error was the cause: http://bit.ly/xey8E
- wicketr, on 03/23/2009, -0/+1While i'd agree that he may not have been able to pull up, he forced that landing. He went nose first on that 3rd bounce because he wasn't trying to pull up.
- inactive, on 03/24/2009, -0/+1@MaxTrescott is on Twitter, not on digg.com, and has published a blog post on this subject. You can read it here: http://www.maxtrescott.com/max_trescott_on_general ...
He is a master CFI and was nominated national CFI of the year 2008 - crash331, on 03/23/2009, -1/+2I don't think a C-17 crashed in Texas.
- JMScheib, on 03/24/2009, -0/+1Moron.
- inactive, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1Funny 'cause my father writes and speaks english worse than me yet worked for an international airlines for 30 years as chief purser. And I personally know of chief flight instructors and DC-10-30 captains of his airlines, who fly from UAE to KJFK twice a week and know english less than me yet any american, british and european airlines would be more than honored to hire them. By the way none of them are flight engineers, and the dumb useless flight engineers in our airlines are frustrated nowadays mostly because the airlines don't want them anymore (Because they are selling their dc-10-30s and upgrading to 747 and 777)
You, someone who has come as far as working as a flight engineer of an airlines, know very well that having a degree in English literature in your resume isn't a requirement set forth by any airlines that you know of unless that airlines want you to write poems and articles about them for their magazines.
Anyways, I have read your previous comment. Honestly speaking, and judging by that comment, if I had an airlines, I wouldn't have hired you even if you got A+ in English Language and English Literature. I don't want my flight crews to write novels on my flight deck. Sorry - JMScheib, on 03/24/2009, -0/+1The pilot is in control. Blaming it on the wind is unacceptable.
- hoisonsauce, on 03/24/2009, -0/+1There's a Bill Plimpton animation about mobsters in the Wild West that is perfect for this comment; can't find it though.
- dannykeene, on 03/24/2009, -0/+1Fedex is evil for somehow firing anyone who tries to unionize and somehow gets away with it in the USA
- dannykeene, on 03/25/2009, -1/+1I read your comment, and judging by your poor use of the english language, I wouldn't hire you either.
- Andrwmorph, on 03/23/2009, -2/+2We need to go back to the horse and buggy! Horses don't explode!
- mrhahn, on 03/23/2009, -1/+1Not a pilot, however: when you bounce, your speed (which is already fairly low, Vref) decays even further and presumably takes you below the stall speed (Vs0). At that point, even if you add power immediately, you won't be able to make a missed approach.
- Tddupre, on 03/23/2009, -4/+3we already knew they couldn't drive. why give them an airplane?
- melivorous, on 03/24/2009, -2/+1first plane crash since they opened?
of course it was two stupid americans who did it -
