- lucutus, on 02/18/2008, -9/+195"I like to think that part of why the youngest voters support Ron Paul is that they understand this issue and the financial burden two generations of bad parenting have put upon several generations of America's children.
While many have wrung their hands over drugs, sex and status, the future of this generation has been entirely mortgaged to the Chinese and other foreign holders of our debts. "
The baby boomers I work with openly accept blame and have apologized to me directly for what their generation left us with.- stonebear, on 02/18/2008, -10/+76Don't heap it all on their shoulders. The downfall happened in 1916, when control of the nation's money was given to the international banking cartels; everything since is a direct result of that. It was the parents of the baby boom who had a real shot at revolution, during the great depression, but there was just enough middle class left intact to prevent it. By the time the baby boom had its shot, the middle class of their parents had become large enough that any meaningful social change was literally impossible no matter how much they protested. They should be given credit for what little they did pull off under the circumstances.
With the unrelenting attack on the American middle class today, and the hubris of the banks to rely on a police state to prevent social change instead, this generation may have a real shot at finally overturning the abomination of desolation that has been wrought by the usurers. An elite, high tech police Vs. the raw animal energy of millions of desperate people will be an interesting contest.- Birdoftruth, on 02/18/2008, -0/+26I thought that happened in 1913?

- dantrenner, on 02/18/2008, -5/+8Stonebear is correct. It was actually my grandfather's generation who opened the door on the despicable IRS and Federal Reserve both in 1913. There is only one solution to all of this and that's to go back to those forks in the road and stay the straight course. Ron Paul is the only man who might be able to do something about it, if we haven't already waited too long. I give my sacred pledge that I will wirte Ron's name on my ballot if I have to as my part of a voter's revolt. But there could yet be a delegat revolt in the Convention when they realize their horse is an Oath Violator, they are pledged not to the man, but to the country and may well vote for Ron Paul.
- mempko, on 02/18/2008, -5/+3What is funny is that Ron Paul wants to fix this by gold standard. Stonebear would obviously figure out that being a fiat system of money is not the problem. It is having our money controlled by private banking cartels.
- gyrfalcon, on 02/18/2008, -0/+10Ron Paul is not about a gold standard necessarily. He just wants money backed by commodities.

- FaithclubDotNet, on 02/18/2008, -2/+37Isn't it a basic flaw in any democracy,"When faced with the chance to vote oneself more money by heaping debt on the next generation, the democracy will vote for it. Or at least elected officials will."
- slezzzter, on 02/18/2008, -1/+38And, of course, this is why the US was founded as a republic. Through the years we've become more democratic (direct election of senators, for instance) and suffered the major flaw of democracy: destruction of minority rights. That is especially, if you agree with Rand, that the individual is the smallest minority.
Although the true author is probably unknown, the progression of democracy attributed to Alexander Tyler seems to be holding well:
"The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage." and
"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largess from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship."- chromerium, on 02/18/2008, -2/+6Ouch. Thats a pretty hard judgement. Maybe I should read up on Marx.
- loopist, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1slezzzter, I think that quote isn't nessecarily a true historical quote....but none the less one of the most spot on quotes I've read in a while. I think we are somewhere in the "apathy to dependence" state right now...

- DogofFire, on 02/18/2008, -26/+12this is such ridiculous propaganda. yeah it's all those "entitlements" (read: almost paying working people fairly for their decades of labor). and it has nothing to do with the trillions of dollars we spending on the military every year. 60% of the federal discretionary budget goes to the military! social security is a self-funded program - paid by workers, for workers. the real fiscal problem in this country is military spending and the exploitative capitalist system itself. but Americans are so mis-educated and propagandized that the second anybody says that, people scream "COMMUNIST!" the next crisis will be oil depletion (not some abstract "fiscal irresponsibility"), and that will make life so hard for working people that they will start to think differently about a cooperative economy and won't have such warm and fuzzy feelings toward the financial aristocracy.
- LuaPron, on 02/18/2008, -4/+8If capitalism is exploitive, then start by quitting your job.
- DogofFire, on 02/18/2008, -13/+5if you think capitalism is so great, why don't you go buy a few factories and a few thousand acres of farmland?
ask the people dying in Iraq if they think capitalism is exploitative. because that's why we're in Iraq - to keep oil prices down and keep capitalism working smoothly. does it make you feel good that millions of people are murdered so you can enjoy riding around in your Hummer?- LuaPron, on 02/18/2008, -2/+11if you think my government's war of aggression in Iraq is a product of economic freedom, I would suggest you take a look at what has been happening since 1913. This war is funded in much the same way as would be expected from a thief.
If you really wish to provide a principled argument against the evil corporate overlords, then you'd better not be serving them. Know that computers, the internet and electricity are all products of capitalists. If your so willing to rail against the system, then participation in it is hypocritical.
If you really want to make some progress toward peace, then I suggest you look toward the types of people who are generally responsible for the killing - the politicians.

- BESTenemy, on 02/18/2008, -1/+21The problem is not so much that the older generation did not invest into their future. They were promised social programs and benefits for the taxes they paid. Sure, there were a lot more of them, but there were also a lot more taxes collected as a result. If the money was spent where it was supposed to, there wouldn't be a problem. Nowdays they tell us that there is a baby boom crisis and that we won't be able to afford to sustain the aging population, yet parallel to that they tell us to invest into our future, selling the same ***** that tricked our parents into believing everything was going to be alright.
The problem is irresponsible redistribution and reappropriation of funds - the government and the central bank that think they can get away with anything.- mhearne, on 02/18/2008, -1/+5They also neglect to mention that the boomers will be dying in droves about 10 years after they begin to collect.

- Quakee, on 02/18/2008, -1/+13Its not the fault of the baby boomers. Its the fault of politicians. If the govt promised you a bunch of ***** would you really say no? Are you gonna return your tax refund check if you happen to get a refund? Will anyone? ***** no.
Whats funny to me is that the medicare system the way it is NOW seems to be bankrupting the country and so many people want to make it universal for EVERYONE. Thats not baby boomers talking, thats US... and Michael Moore.
So with the current presidential candidates we either have to choose to destroy the nation through debt and bankruptcy, or through non ending wars...

OK, so they're not that completely that bad, but they're close and I've heard some pretty stupid ideas bandied about.
I'd just like to know why fruit-pickers from other parts of the Americas taking sub-minimum-wage jobs are more alarming than people in China and India taking all the blue- and white-collar jobs, and why it's okay for us to go and try to rebuild countries and give aid to people who don't want any.
At least the illegal immigrants made the effort to come HERE to get a handout, and seem to want the help instead of shooting at our troops! Sheesh. - Narrator, on 02/18/2008, -0/+11Why does the government pay interest to the bankers when it could just print the money? JFK started doing this and we know what happened to him. ( http://www.john-f-kennedy.net/executiveorder11110. ... ) There are some very good criticisms of the way our capitalism is set up. Unfortunately the only one that ever gets any play is Marxism which is a throughly broken and unworkable theory. That's probably the way the banking cartels like it. They present a false choice between our current rigged system and something worse.
- Reaper2806, on 02/18/2008, -4/+2It's just so cute how all the people on this forum rant and rave and don't do anything about it. It's charming, really it is.
Didn't you guys do something called protesting back in the 60s? - VitriolAndAngst, on 02/18/2008, -1/+3Oh crap -- I didn't get any of this loot.
None of the current politicians has a full plan to get us out of this mess. However, Clinton and Obama can help the economy, because innovation is strong in America. It took a lot of effort for Bush, and other Conservative economic policies going back to Reagan to help wipe out our middle class. Really, if you get these crooks out of our way -- it is hard to keep America down. You have to intentionally try to ***** it up by lowering taxes on the wealthy, pushing for cheap credit for banks while giving extortionary fees to credit card holders. Meanwhile, you give importers "free trade" while not hurting "competitiveness" with things like Tariffs, which might actually force companies to pay Americans more money. Then sit back while companies outsource to the lowest wage country, and sell off infrastructure and technology to China and Dubai (which is very involved in terrorist and drug cartel banking).
***** Pee Wee Herman could help our economy -- it really takes a devious and evil mind to screw it up like Bush did. Even Clinton's NAFTA wasn't enough to destroy the middle class.
The REAL solution, if mentioned by a candidate, would mean they never got elected; send an armada of ships to all these offshore banks, and demand the People's money back. Then put executives in Exxon and those hiding in Dubai in prison. Every last bit of the $9 Trillion in debt should be paid by the Banksters, Military War Profiteers, and Big Oil. If the media gives you bad press, just tell them that Habeus Corpus is not in effect until we've set things right.
But that ain't going to happen. And ***** Ron Paul's economic theories would turn us into Mexico. I can understand the anger of the youth for jumping on his bandwagon -- but get a clue. You have to understand how we got here to get us out of this mess.

But no, they'd rather saturate Digg with worthless posts like this.
- kaelyiesta, on 02/18/2008, -5/+5Could you go into this idea a bit more? I never had enough money to consider researching trading so its all quite confusing to me.

- kaelyiesta, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Actually I was trying to make a point. Unfortunately no one seemed to get it. The point is, this idea is nonsense. The currency problems in our country are long term, (emphasized by semi predictable short term issues that pop up now and then like the housing bubble did) and if the author of this comment bobtheking had listened to this topics argument, instead of attacking us as supposed ron paul fanatics, he would have realized that his argument is not sound. You can't sell short on long term trends, at least not very practically. I was asking him for details facetiously.
- bobbybobington, on 02/18/2008, -4/+18You can hide debt through all sorts of mechanisms, but the fact is debt is debt, and eventually somebody has to pay for it.
- muchachoburacho, on 02/18/2008, -3/+2That's a completely irrelevant response. IF you're so positive that the dollar will collapse and the American economy is gonna fail, then do like what bobotheking said, sell the dollar short in a foreign currency and make tons of money. Stop whining.
- EXreaction, on 02/18/2008, -8/+11You can't make money off of it. When their people would see pictures of our grocery stores containing full shelves of all that meat/fruit/veggies/bread they were sure it was fake propaganda photos. Consumer electronics that were almost necessities in the West were often available only on the black market. The centralized control of production and price caused drastic over and under production of consumer durables, and the economy was far to rigid to react to a changing world.

- Protonz, on 02/18/2008, -1/+6You have a VERY valid point. Many libertarians I know are investing in gold as it has a steady value compared to the US Dollar. So there are many libertarians who are making, or at least, saving the value in their dollar.
We are looking at things like the housing mortgage foreclosure crisis, and many smart business people are snatching these houses up at auction for great deals. But this has a great deal of risk, you are depending on the economy picking up before property taxes and utilities sucking up your profit.

- SpykerSpeed, on 02/18/2008, -0/+6You can't short a currency long-term. But just look at the markets now, you don't have to read Digg to get the full story. The dollar is falling, and that means people are selling it. Other aspects of our economy that are easily measurable are getting worse. In the short term, people will prop up prices for as long as possible in hopes of making money. They'll wait until the very last minute before all selling at once. Then things get really nasty.
- hotdrop, on 02/18/2008, -0/+6Exactly you cant short long term when you short the market being right isnt good enough you need to be right at the right time

- BESTenemy, on 02/18/2008, -1/+12Alan Greenspan had the same thought - he expanded easy credit and false optimism. He said that when people panic, they stop spending and that is bad for the economy. The role of the FAD is to make things seem better than they actually are, to keep people spending, cause they don't actually have the wisdom to see what's good for them and for the economy. Well... look at where his logic got us.

- mexicanmonkey, on 02/18/2008, -5/+32 this guy is saying that America is going to implode when all the baby-boomers start to retire and put a huge strain on the health care system from 2010 to 2040. The top accountant of the entire country says that the US will hardly have enough cash to pay the interest rates on what they owe. Did you watch the whole video? Seems like a good argument to me.
- orca94, on 02/18/2008, -7/+7If the U.S. is going to implode because of entitlements then Japan and the E.U. will supernova. We don't have an aging population anywhere near that of Japan's and the E.U.'s (or China for that matter, but China doesn't have entitlements) or entitlements on the scale of the E.U. or Japan. Basically the video is then arguing that the whole world is *****. Because frankly, if the E.U., United States and Japan's economies (or any two, or even one) crash every country on the planet is *****.
It's debt, deal with it, it's not the end of the ***** world. - Outdoor83, on 02/18/2008, -4/+5Our economy won't crash. Americans, and people in general, are nothing if not completely ingenious when forced to solve a problem with limited resources. Gas starts to get expensive? Look to alternatives. Dollar starts to get weak? Demand political change to spend less. We respond late to problems, but generally not TOO late.
As long as everyone keeps going to work, producing things, there will be no crash in this country as there will still be enough "stuff" to go around. We didn't really understand that in the 1920's, and most monetary policy at that time simply made the matter worse. I have heard from numerous sources that our knowledge of how the economy works will prevent the Great Depression from repetition.
Also, debt *in of itself* is not bad, as long as your economy expands past the rate at which you are accumulating debt. Right now, we aren't. But that can change: we can add to our debt, grow at a faster rate, and be better off.

- link5280, on 02/18/2008, -4/+6Think past tomorrow! Why has the dollar fallen over the last 10 years to every currency in the world? You haven't seen articles where celebs and musicians want their contracts adjusted so payments are in foreign currencies? Now ask yourself why!
- annonimality, on 02/18/2008, -3/+3The dollar has not "fallen over the last 10 years to every currency in the world" - China pegs its currency to the dollar, so as the U.S. dollar falls so does the Yuan. The Bush administration is devaluing the dollar intentionally (or promoting its devaluation as the Federal Reserve actually controls fiscal policy), and for the same reason China is intentionally devaluing its currency - to promote the sale of exports and discourage the sale of imports.

- SpykerSpeed, on 02/18/2008, -3/+5Human innovation? You mean like raising taxes? Eliminating benefits? The economy would have to grow at breakneck speed for decades straight in order for the US government to fulfill its obligations.
- Outdoor83, on 02/18/2008, -0/+3This isn't new: we've known social security is hosed for years. The likely outcome is that benefits will start to go down, regardless of how people hate it, and some very pissed-off baby boomers won't retire. They'll work to 70, 75, or later, and that'll *greatly* help the problem. Social Security will revert to a baseline standard of living, not something that people think you can survive off of as your sole means of income.
- SpykerSpeed, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2Depends on who comprises the voters. If the baby boomers continue to vote in larger numbers than younger generations, they'll continue to get their full benefits and taxes will keep going up for the younger folks.

- tsos2, on 02/18/2008, -2/+6Well, you also need to remember that many in the older generations were fed the belief that "everthing was ok" by the MSM. Being 42 myself I've seen the difference in the way things are now and the way they were. It used to be that when "Uncle Sam" gave his word you were led to believe it was the truth. Well, people have begun to see the lies over the last 10-20 years or so. The true "resposibility" lies with wall street and the "those behind the scenes". Over the last 10-20 years, the internet has opened a lot of eyes and "those behind the scenes" do not like it one bit. I wouldn't be suprised if one day we wake up and the internet will have mysteriously been disabled by "terrorists". If that happens, standby for the real stuff to hit the fan.

- petrodollar, on 02/18/2008, -8/+15No, the gold standard will be so much better because it will prevent the government from printing more paper money. Don't ask me how or why, it just will.
- Ayanamifan, on 02/18/2008, -5/+9The government should only be allowed to print as much money as the gold it has on hand. When the gold runs low, you need to spend money and use resources, which would help to stimulate the economy, to go out and mine some more.
I don't see how people believe that just ... printing money is a good idea. The money is only worth anything because the people are fooled into believing its worth something. The rest of the world is starting to realize this. Why is it a hard concept?
Is it seriously ok just to print bills and expect them to be worth the same amount?- orca94, on 02/18/2008, -6/+9Wrong. Currency isn't a measure of a nation's wealth in terms of precious metals. It's a vehicle facilitating the exchange of wealth (for goods, services etc...) in a regulated, recognized and trusted method. Why should the amount of currency a country produces be tied to the amount of precious metals it owns? That doesn't make a lick of sense. The total value of the U.S. economy in a year far outweighs the total gold reserves of the largest 50 or so gold reserves in the world. Saying currency has to be gold backed is asserting that the only thing of worth in the economy are precious metals, the discovery of which is erratic and the value of which is insignificant when compared to the world economy.
- gyrfalcon, on 02/18/2008, -2/+3"Why should the amount of currency a country produces be tied to the amount of precious metals it owns?"
Ron Paul is not about a gold standard, but rather backing money on commodities... Gold is one commodity that's very good to do this with. There are other commodities that are good too. - nakani, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1@orca94: That's the point of competing currencies backed against an array of commodies: silver, gold, timber, platinum, coal, etc.
- adeptation, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1You do know that the gold standard is bad. It causes deflation which is worst than inflation. What we need to do, as Ron Paul stated, is accountability of the Federal Reserve. Read up on your economics before you make claims that the gold standard is better than now. What caused this whole ordeal to happen is giving the Federal Reserve too much control and almost little to no accountability for what they do. I say have an open forum on how they conduct and make their decisions.

- aleone31, on 02/18/2008, -2/+14Wow - I just did some research and indeed they have been calling it a collapse for thirty years. So just to be clear -- you are arguing it is not a collapse because according to the exchange rate of USD to YEN the dollar is worth 51% of what it was in 1978. How much further would it have to go to be a collapse in your mind?
- orca94, on 02/18/2008, -8/+4Holy *****, how thick are you guys. A collapse or crash implies a SUDDEN and EXTREME loss in value. Nothing that's happened to the dollar in the past few years indicates it has crashed of collapsed. In fact everything indicates it's business as usual, i.e. a cycle. Things go up, others go down, then they go down and others go up. The Euro is on top right now, and the Dollar is on the bottom, 3-4 years from now it'll be the other way around. Welcome to how the world works and has for the past few decades.
Btw, I'd love to see this so called research. I could use a good laugh right now, especially since what I'm saying is clearly evident from looking at any random finance sites historical currency exchange rate graphs. Choosing discrete points in time to prove your points doesn't work, it's all about trends.

Since you're apparently financially retarded, let me clue you in to how finances work. If you have 1000$, and you have a mortgage on a house and medical student loans, you don't neccesarily instantly pay down your mortgage or student loan.
In many, many cases you can make more money investing your 1000$ at a better return rate than you are paying in interest on the loans, both of which are traditionally very low interest.
But hey, don't mind me. Continue with the "not understanding how to make money" bit. - TypeEE, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1He issued his own bonds.

- monkeypaw, on 02/18/2008, -1/+1I hope you guys are also changing your citizenship. You're going to lose money on the conversion from dollars to any other currency - it's built into the exchange. You will have to pay taxes in whatever other country you work in. If it's in Europe you can expect it to be > 40%. If you keep your citizenship here, then you also have to pay US taxes for income earned overseas. US taxes must be paid in dollars - and you'll lose money yet again on the conversion back to the dollar. So good luck with that.

- sanotaan, on 02/18/2008, -0/+5you do realize doctors there make a fraction of what doctors here make, right? something on the order of 33%. further, if you're an american citizen working abroad, there's the possibility (though not inevitability) that you will have to pay income taxes to the host country as well as to US even though you're working abroad and getting paid in some other currency...
think that strategy over and evaluate the dollar's (and euro's/pound's) situation again as you near the close of your schooling.- brad3378, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1There's a lot of pressure in the Medical community to cut costs lately - but how?
All doctors must go to medical school.....and it's damn expensive. The cost of a Doctor's education MUST be accounted for in their pay scale or else nobody would want to risk bankruptcy after spending 8 years in an expensive medical school.
The Democrats want to create a socialized medicine program to offer health insurance to everybody. With the extra needs of aging baby boomers and "free" health care for all, there's likely to be a greater demand for services. If I were a Doctor, I'd be fighting this to the end. One way they will likely cut costs is by capping a doctor's pay. So basically all of those years you spent slaving away in medical school while your liberal arts friends got drunk every weekend will have been wasted. No Reward for your risk or hard work. Instead you could expect to work longer hours to help a bunch of fat people that don't give a ***** about their own health for a fraction of what you should be earning to help deserving people.

- postaboy, on 02/18/2008, -1/+3Debt based economies do work if the money received is used responsibly. If the government went into debt to pay for a war (like Iraq), it certainly does not make sense becasue it does not promote future growth. However if that debt was used to increase capital stock, or saved, or R&D, it would yield economic growth in the future. That's why heavy debtor countries (most of the G8 and especially the US and Japan), have continued to see sustained growth even though they are knee deep in debt.

- orca94, on 02/18/2008, -5/+7Right... Because the Euro isn't high right now? Do you get the whole point behind Buy Low, Sell High? You're advocating Buy High, Sell Low, the dumbest of all investment strategies.
- link5280, on 02/18/2008, -2/+6Um, no! Using your logic I should wait until the Euro goes up even higher then buy, so I would get less for each dollar. Ill buy now, thank you. Actually I have been buying for years, both Euro and Asian markets and I'm doing very well.
- orca94, on 02/18/2008, -4/+3The Euro is on an upswing. Emphasis on the upswing, it's on the upper end of the cycle. In relative terms it's at a high right now. I.e., if you buy now, you're buying high. The nominal initial exchange rate for the Euro (which was based upon the strength and value of each individual European currency) was about ~$1.18 expect that to be about the long term mean. It's at ~$1.47 right now, it's overvalued by about $.29 or about a 25% premium. Have fun with that. A good time to buy would have been when it was at about ~$.85, or wait till it moves back down there again in a few years.

- CrazedLeper, on 02/18/2008, -6/+6British pound sterling. The exchange rate is not so great but it's not going anywhere. It's actually backed by something. Later, when the smoke has cleared, you can convert it to something else--maybe even a whole lot of something else.

- ScottMitchell, on 02/18/2008, -0/+5I hate to sound crass, but maybe we, as a society, have to agree that we can't be expected to ensure that everyone has a certain standard of living. If you get dealt a ***** hand of cards in life, and can't better yourself through hard work and perseverance, then, well, that sucks, but as my dad always said, "Life ain't fair. She's a mean spirited bitch that would soon as rip out your heart and piss in your chest cavity as she would bequeath you with riches and women."

- XanderDee, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2This is true however we also have a central bank and they stated that we will reduce our interest rates when our economy is booming, unemployment is at 33 year low, home starts are up and expected to increase, and manufacturing is managing the increase of our currency. Lowing our interest rates makes no sense at all, you must take away from the punch bowl when every one is drunk not add to it.
If Mark lowers the rate by .5 that means we are following the US into the grave.

- Khast, on 02/18/2008, -7/+16I want a president who does care about all aspects of what it is to be American. Not just corporate interests. Unfortunately, I don't see a single candidate which would be the *best* choice for America. Yeah, Ron Paul sounds great, but I still don't know..every candidate has promised great things...............
Don't get me started about the liberals...Both Hillary, and Obama would be absolute frickin' clowns in office. (No, I am not racist, or against women being president.) Just listen to their dribbling about health care, and how to make it so.... BZZZZZT wrong, there are a few other things to deal with BEFORE health care can even be a reality...like say making it so frivolous lawsuits are dropped, making it impossible to sue for millions for stupid *****....then, just then maybe health care can become more affordable, because the insurance rates might drop.
Republicans...hoo boy... What is with the absolute fanaticism about keeping this ***** war going forever? Control? Makes their dicks bigger? Or is there something more...like greed? Yeah, there's a war going on, it is the financial vacuum cleaner, sucking the money out of the taxpayers for generations to come...you'd figure anyone with even 1/32nds of a brain would have to say "Let's get this ***** war over with, it is costing us more, and more each year", but no..they want to keep it going.

- Khast, on 02/18/2008, -0/+10I guess I am offending people with salt in their wounds. People think that just because we are losing GW Bush at the end of the year, the tyranny will end there....WRONG. Bush only opened the floodgates for future presidents to abuse the system....and you honestly think they won't? Bush showed us, with the right attitude, anything can be accomplished, even against congress, the house, or even 90% of the voting populace....
Not only is this country going to go bankrupt, we are having our constitution gutted, our checks and balances removed.
The writings on the wall people....don't vote with your heart....these tyrants are willing to tell you anything to get them into office....if Bush wouldn't listen to us, what makes you think these guys will?
Rome was confident that it would never fall.....Because they were the "best"...they had "patriotism" and yet, they made some pretty arrogant mistakes which ultimately led to their fall.......don't let the USA make these same mistakes.- wbienek, on 02/18/2008, -1/+5Hate to tell you this.. but it's INEVITABLE the US will fall.... Just read your Bible.. All the Evolution arguments in the world aren't going to keep the US from collapsing in from its lazy greed riddled ignorant foolishness.
- Khast, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1As much as I know this will be dugg down. Frankly, I think all religions tend to believe their sacred texts to the point, they yearn to make the prophecies come true. They say, if you believe something in your mind, your actions will ultimately lead to your desire. (Whether successful or not depends on feasability..ect.)
I personally feel, that irregardless of whether there's a god or not. I should enjoy life, as if this is all I got. But in the same time, being the kind person, to make the experience of others better. I do believe in creation AND evolution, as there is evidence which supports both concepts. (I feel God may have started things, and made multiple revisions throughout the history of the universe.) [human race 2.0]
I don't care what religion you are. Me? I am Pagan. I don't go preaching to everyone about how great my religion is. (Who am I to say that my religion is the only way.) But at the same time, I don't want people telling me what's right and wrong either (Okay, so your religion *is* the only way to "heaven"...doesn't every other religion on the planet have this claim? What makes yours so special?)

- jerryterhorst, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1is he leaving prematurely? the 15-year term doesn't expire until 2013.
- phybere, on 02/18/2008, -0/+23Is any of this surprising? Looking at the average American, they owe nearly $10,000 in credit card debt alone, not to mention car payments, house payments, etc. Would we really expect the government to function within their means when the population voting them into power doesn't?
This is why the country is doomed to collapse: not because we *couldn't* recover, but because we *won't* recover - the voters are short-sighted and voting for tax decreases, not increases.- postaboy, on 02/18/2008, -1/+4America has been in debt for 200 years now and has continued to see significant economic growth. Right now the debt to GDP ratio is 60%. It is mathematically possible to cut medicare, medicaid, other entitlements, defense spending, and social security, for one year and that debt would be eliminated to half of what it is. If the people of America wanted to dedicate all of their production to eliminating the federal debt, they would be able to within less than a year.
- brad3378, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Actually it's $9200 per average American HOUSEHOLD http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/money101/l ...
And yes, that is a disturbing number, but let's suppose that you have a family of four.
Now multiply 4 x $30,000 = $120,000 to calculate your family's share of our national debt.
(based on data from http://www.brillig.com/debt_clock/ )
Now as if that's not enough to be angry and/or depressed over, consider the fact that this is only our CURRENT level of debt.
We still need to add Social security benefits for 78,000,000 baby boomers that are about to retire.
We still have not taken into account that the baby boomers will no longer be paying income taxes towards the debt after they retire.
I won't even attempt to speculate how bad our situation is, but I'd be lying if I said I was not scared *****-less about the future of this country.
- easy4lif, on 02/18/2008, -2/+3so, who the first to get to lose health care benefits, the poor or the elderly. Remember the 1930's before social security, but, I guess most of you don't mind having to physically for mom and dads meds + having an extra mouth to feed.

Right? ... Right?- postaboy, on 02/18/2008, -1/+3Well it's the economy, stupid. The government is one sector of a much larger entity. There are millions of consumers and and thousands of firms moving making millions of uncoordinated economic decisions everyday. Shouldn't some blame be placed on everybody?

Bush going to Africa and dolling out $100.00 B in charity is not an actual charity, over time same paper money will barter for trade payments for poor nation.
