- EMFK, on 06/28/2009, -5/+33FTA: "Greenville’s Little Mermaid was given to the city in 1994 as a gift from the Danish Festival Board."
The sculptor's heirs need to take up the issue with the Danish Festival Board as they gave it as a gift. - unknownpoltroon, on 06/28/2009, -2/+24How much did the sculptors pay to Hans Christian Anderson estate?
- cogitocogito, on 06/28/2009, -3/+23JUST PAY SHIPPING AND HANDLING
- runep, on 06/29/2009, -0/+15We also have the issue of royalty payment for baked goods to discuss.
Best regards, the Danish people - absurdist, on 06/28/2009, -3/+18Another example of the insanity of intellectual property taken to extremes.
- unknownpoltroon, on 06/29/2009, -1/+13Course, this might be the Michigan city danish festival board.
- darkNiGHTS, on 06/29/2009, -1/+9http://danishfestival.org/contactus.aspx
Yes, the Danish Festival Board in Michigan..; - lordmike, on 06/29/2009, -0/+7With what money? It's Michigan! The state is broke!
- taox, on 06/29/2009, -1/+5Oh this is embarrassing.
- Narsilianshard, on 06/28/2009, -3/+7since when are Danes uptight about anything?
- SaladCactusKing, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3I'm talking about Hans Christian Andersons heirs. Not the sculptures. HCA died in 1875

- jmnormand, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3from a quick search the denmark copyright law is 70 years after the artist death. so in denmark the work is still under copyright. this might be enough for them in a us court given all the trade agreements on copyright. its also possible they could sue in denmark and the people could be held liable if they ever traveled to any country in the eu. it would be interested to find out how the law works in a case like this. even if the case itself is completely bogus.
- bootprint, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3It's the little things that get to them, mermaids and tiny islands.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Island - digxag, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3It's true he wasn't alive in 1875, but because he wasn't born yet. The sculptor lived from 1876-1959, and the sculpture's body was modeled on his wife, who died in 1963. So we're not really talking about ancient history.
- copypastry, on 06/28/2009, -5/+7I would have never guessed that the danish would be copyright douchebags.
- umdigger, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2And which beer is best, Carlsberg or Tuborg. Either way, as long as you're drunk and at Tivoli, it's all good.
- puppyoneb, on 06/29/2009, -3/+5Sculptors heirs are obviously friends with RIAA on Facebook. Basterdos!
Sorry... don't know how to say bastards in Danish. - llopez1223, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2I guess rent is due.
- DiggerDave08, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2This is bankrupt michigan. Every other letter we get in the mail is asking for payment for something. We should handle their request for royalties the same way we handle the default mortgage statments...
TRHOW IT IN THE TRASH AND FORGET ABOUT IT ABOUT IT UNTIL THEY ARE READY TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. - samard2002, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2Has anyone thought how they are supposed to pay royalties on a statue? Is it every time someone looks at it?
- mysticalone, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1Honestly, should we go to war over Bear Claws?
- DifferentAngle, on 06/29/2009, -1/+2ffs, it's only a couple people, not all danish people
- nepidae, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1What did these heirs do to get money for this besides barely avoiding being a stain?
- eviscerator, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1Being Danish, looking at their photos is kind of surreal :S
- pinchduck, on 06/29/2009, -1/+2Speaking from Michigan here:
Give them GM. Ha ha ha, take that, suckers! - silverchrysalis, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1every time a Michigan seagull craps on it.
- AriaNoelle, on 06/29/2009, -1/+1It's called a sense of entitlement.
- puppyoneb, on 06/29/2009, -1/+2WE MADE TWO SCULPTURES FOR THE PRICE OF ONE. BUT WAIT... THERE'S MORE!!!
- com2, on 06/29/2009, -1/+2http://danishfestival.org/aboutus.aspx
- digitalArtform, on 06/29/2009, -2/+2Pinocchio, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White...
- SaladCactusKing, on 06/29/2009, -5/+6It must be a tough life being a zillionaire heir to someone who's been dead since 1875. Have any of those tools ever built or worked on anything in their rich, spoiled lives or contribute anything to society other than simple being a lucky sperm cell?
- asgardshill, on 06/28/2009, -3/+4Look out Starbucks, you're next.
- jivatmanx, on 06/29/2009, -2/+3Hey Guys, it's me, John William Polidori... I wrote a book in 1814 called "The Vampyre"...
It appears that my idea has become, well shall I say, "popular". I see my intellectual property is being rabidly infringed upon in every aspect of culture.
I demand 200,000 for every violation. Goths pay 15,000,000 each. You will all hear from my lawyer - JustinTense, on 06/29/2009, -1/+1Mermaid, you've shed your Dutch ways and become a true Dane.
- hackiavelli, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1The statue was made in 1913. If it had been created in the United States it would be in the public domain now.
- yacks, on 06/29/2009, -1/+1I would argue that the mermaid in Michigan is looking into a body of water in Michigane as opposed to looking into a Danish body of water, therefore it is completely different.
- masterstghm, on 06/29/2009, -3/+3The proper response is "Up yours"
- emjaymj, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1@hackiavelli
Not true. Copyrights in the US last for the life of the author plus 70 years. So it would become public domain in 2029.
That being said, the claim is still ridiculous.
And if they're looking for money, they're targeting the wrong state lol - samard2002, on 06/29/2009, -1/+1Everyone is a pirate until THEIR stuff is getting ripped off. Just look at Digg. Everyone is pro-piracy, yet they go nuts if someone "steals" their link or submission.
- RedSaint, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1Carlsberg obviously!
- digxag, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1Andersen's work isn't in contention. The story is about claims by Edvard Eriksen's heirs.
- RedSaint, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1But why? We haven't really done anything to piss you off, have we?
- DrJG, on 06/29/2009, -1/+1Irony of the patents-and-copyrights-righteous-pompous-ones (old poor citizens arrested for getting necessary drugs from across the border because they are cheaper, ancient knowledge of other lands applied for being privately patented by corporates for a copyright without asking for permission from the nation the knowledge came from much less its millions and millions of citizens, objects of venerations of others used in despicable manner) being sued for infringement of copyrights by cousins from across the little pond!!!!
Delicious! - DrJG, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1Usually receivers of goods obtained by theft are only a tad less liable than those peddling it, and in any case the Danish demand is for payment or dismantle rather than a punitive against all MI or US or even the little town of Greenville. Quite reasonable under the circumstances, unless it is considered that only US might preach and hold copyrights while any others are merely ridiculous for thinking of it.
- DrJG, on 06/29/2009, -1/+2You mean the various US citizens facing arrest for getting lifesaving drugs only affordable from Canada is oh, that is all right, let the poor and old die?
- Wreckage, on 06/29/2009, -2/+2No problem, just cut us a check for freeing Denmark from the Nazis in WWII.
