- giantAppleCore, on 10/12/2007, -31/+212Good for him
- ZenFu, on 10/12/2007, -23/+158If it was true, good for him. If someone was jerkin his chain, bad for him.
If some mofo tried to do that to my kids i wouldn't just kill him, i'd cut his balls off first. - wbreim, on 10/12/2007, -17/+134We can't legally condone this behavior but we can sure as hell let it slide as temporary insanity.
- daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -11/+113Now his daughter will have to deal with what happend to her and the fact that she will rarely be able to see her dad who will, most likely, spend her entire childhood in prision.
- Aidenag, on 10/12/2007, -30/+93This is how it needs to be done... people want to know why child predators are attacking so often the last decade? its because the govt doesnt allow a Fathers rage be the Punishment!
honestly think he took it pretty easy on the guy, i wouldnt of been so quick. though i woulda waited to have more solid proof first :) - eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -19/+79Again, the temporary insanity plea. This is not pre-planned murder, this is a fit of rage, and no jury would, or should convict him.
- TheNoot, on 10/12/2007, -19/+75@wbreim
It's called "Justifiable Homicide," my friend.
If the recently deceased did, indeed, molest the recently homicidal's child, I'd say we have a case of it right here. - Crazyiodudo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+45Provided he had some proof that this guy did it, good for him.
But if it was just here-say, I'm not so sure. - tomboy501, on 10/12/2007, -11/+49...but, if someone does that to your own kid and it's proof positive - I would think all reason would leave you entirely and courts would be the last thing on your mind. Maybe the closest any sane and civil person could come to temporary insanity. Can you imagine trying to sleep at night with that eating you alive - knowing the man was right next door? I would go off the deep end, too.
- johndi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+39So few details to go on in this story. I hate people who hurt children like that, but killing someone off the word of a two year old without even taking her to see a physician seems very hasty. Small children can act out when they see violent crimes on T.V. You know that they didn't take the daughter to the doctor because a doctor would call the police if a two year old had been molested.
I have to wonder why the lawyer was looking in the old man's window. People with Alzheimer's can do strange things so the old man acting strange could mean he was having problems. Maybe the lawyer has has own issues. Maybe they made this story up to cover for the lawyer losing it when he couldn't stop his neighbor from being strange.
Why did they allow a 58 year old man who who wasn't acting normal access to their daughter?
So many questions, but that being said if it is the truth I don't blame Jonathon Edington for snapping, but I do blame them for not taking their daughter to see a doctor. - kuzotz, on 10/12/2007, -14/+42poetic justice. The only problem I had with this is the fact that the man might've been completely innocent. But we don't know. Revenge murders is still murder....So the father unfornately migh thave ot miss his daughter's childhood.
- cuposmuck, on 10/12/2007, -8/+34sorry i have a 5 month old baby girl... AND i live in japan (where the have separate train carriages for women due to the high level of sex crimes)
what he did was wrong.. but given the situation if i could confirm that he did it, i wouldn't kill him... that's to easy, to light, and the consequence for me would be too great..
i would find out where he works and hangs out and make certain that all the people he knows knew what he did... for years to come... and when he comes after me to silence me then id kill him in self defense...
there are fates far worst than death..... - benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -14/+39I say let the man off with a 5 cent fine. Anyone who molests a child let alone a 2 year old if a ***** that deserves to be murdered in the worst way possible. They actually deserve to be tortured before death too.
- fnaqzna, on 10/12/2007, -16/+41What a shame. Two lives lost. Mr. Edington will be going to jail.
In this country, a person is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
One would think that a lawyer could remember that. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+33didn't know Jack Bauer was also a lawyer
- hobophobe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29We have a legal system for a reason. I'll be the first to admit it needs to be reformed. This incident is unacceptable and we can't allow it to stand without some action taken on our behalf.
There is absolutely no proof that the claim of child molestation is legitimate, and the dead are not given their constitutional right to confront their accusers, face charges, legal representation, and a public trial. This man will receive all of those luxuries that he has deprived his fellow citizen of.
If you love freedom and liberty, if you consider yourself a moral human, you won't condone his behavior.
Child molestation, sexual predation, and the related pathological behaviors such as child/animal/domestic abuse (be it physical and emotional or just emotional), and others are real problems that need _solutions_. Currently we are outraged against these vile behaviors yet we do not put forth the necessary resources to research the causes (be they psychological or physiological).
If we took this problem with the same vigor we have toward very superficial goals such as erectile dysfunction, we could find real solutions and actually prevent these things from happening rather than feeling the embittered contempt and delirium that these acts evoke. As it stands we simply make these people announce their presence after the fact and do little more than lock our children up as a way to stop it from happening. - MrDiaz, on 10/12/2007, -17/+42life sucks people, unfortunately that's they way we have come to handle things right now. I would do the same thing if it was my daughter.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -19/+43Yeah but did/will it work for this kinda thing? They would probably give him a slap on the wrist.
- enderu, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28Right, and what if the guy was innocent? If he was convicted he wouldn't have lasted a month in prison anyway. I am in no way condoning the dead man's actions: if he did molest the child then he got what was coming to him. But this is NOT a path we want to walk down as a society. The accusations make me sick to think about, but the reaction isn't much better.
This is some society we've got going for us here. Yeah, just keep cheering him on the guy who disregarded one of the greatest beliefs in this country (right to a fair trial) when it was his job to help uphold that belief, and murdered a man. Way to go. - tsk1979, on 10/12/2007, -9/+27Yes, good. For those asking wether the molestation really happened, I think they did not even read the full article.
Scroll down, and you will find that the 2 year old narrated a horrifyng experience to the mother, who told her husband.
Temporary insanity and a token fine, thats the max he should get. - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -8/+25Who wants to be a Millionaire?
- frogpelt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18I guess his wife now knows how to get someone killed.
- AxeSwinger, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20I'm living with a two year old now, my son. They're very oblivious of the boob tube as far as actions go. A two year old can recognize a character on TV or understand that someone is driving or riding a bike but not something as involved as child being molested, or having sex at least that's my experience. A two year old is very earnest in their comments they have very little concept of embarrassment and the bathing suit zone. I'd take the word of my two year old if he told me he was touched or probed just because I know how aware and unaware of his surroundings he is and I know that he has never been exposed to any sexual situations other than mom and dad kissing, and dad sneaking a grope with mom :).
That said I suppose a two year old could make a mistake and if this one did I pity all parties involved. - john2kx, on 10/12/2007, -31/+47"This is not pre-planned murder, this is a fit of rage, and no jury would, or should convict him."
You're saying he should be able to get away with it?
A "fit of rage" does not excuse his actions. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+26A "fit of rage" does not excuse his actions.
no but it keeps it from murder one..
plus he will have a jury of his peers.
it it is true, then they will have trouble even getting a second degree conviction, better to go with man slaughter. - cody50, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Where did they get the 1 million dollar bail?
- david630, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22So you think lawyers should kill thats ***** pathetic if he is guilty he should be tried in a court of law. And if he is found guilty then I have no problem with his execution. But to just murder a man is wrong.
- Tebixan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18He needs to be kept away from the rest of society, but if someone is suffering from a mental illness torturing them to death will not solve anything.
No sane person would want to hurt a child like that. So would it not be fair to say most child molesters are mentally ill? - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19The media has decided for you. "He always was a creepy one, working long hours in his secret lab, poking juju dolls with pins," said the murderer's regular joe neighbor. "He wasn't a regular joe like you and me, he was suitable for a lynchin'." Police had no comment on reports that the alleged wife-beater had donkey porn on his computer and that he liked to wring kittens' necks.
- Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Went to a bail bondsman? you only put up 10%. Not sure if they do million dollar bails though. Plus he's a lawyer, having 100k or more in savings/mutual funds would be pretty common.
- nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17"how is it any better to be a murderer then a pervert?"
Child molester bad.
Killer of child molester good. - Oracle95, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Unfortunately the courts, see recent decisions in Vermont and Ohio where CONVICTED child rapists were given only months of probation, don't always do their jobs. New Jersey had a convicted child killer put on probation after several a few years. Within months, he killed again. Again he was released on probation and again he killed.
A parent's duty is to protect their children. Too many judges seem to think that their duty is to protect the criminal. As a lawyer, this man may have realized this conflict of interest. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+21For all you hippies and liberals and the guy that said "America is a scary place rife with religious crazies":
You're all right. Killing this man was extreme. Letting the legal system find him guilty of the crime and putting him in prison for a year or two then letting him out to do it again is too lenient. So let's meet in the middle:
cut out his tongue, chop off his arms, legs and penis, put him in a cellar and leave his amputated body parts there as his only food source.
I'm glad we could all come to agree that it would have been better to let this man live.
Pedophiles have no right to live.
Now the hippies and libs will all scream "but no! Everyone has a right to live!"
No, my naive, bleeding hearts, they do not. When you forcibly take away ones innocence and screw up their life permanently by committing such a heinous act you have given up your right to exist as anything other than fertilizer.
Edit: If you RTFA, you can see it's pretty obvious the guy was a loon. The police have caught him staring in the Edington child's window, shouting obscenities at children and being just plain off-kilter.
I hope Edington walks. And if I ever meet him I will gladly shake his hand with absolute respect for the fact that he did what is right.
In our next lesson we will teach the hippies and liberals that coating yourself in Patchouli oil does not hide the fact that you didn't shower. - yaos, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17"James served two days behind bars in 2001 on a drunken driving charge, according to the state Correction Department.
"He had some bizarre behavior over the last month," said Darrell Maynard, a neighbor. "He drove his car through his garage, hit the other neighbor's building."
Another time a neighbor found James intoxicated on the street, Maynard said. James shouted obscenities at children, he said."
You decide. - h00ligan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13there is a reason we have a process, and it's a bloody good thing this guy is no longer a part of it. Molestation is horrible, but where's the proof?
To you all saying good for him - i understand the emotional response, of course.. however, you have no idea if it was even true. Now... once he was convicted..... - Crizack, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17Even if this man's daughter was molested it doesn't give him the right to kill another man. We have a justice system in place for a reason. If we let emotional impulse and instinct control our lives we are no better than animals.
- ryanchristopher, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17I'll love it if they let him go with just time served.
- steveoco, on 10/12/2007, -12/+22Now this is what I'm talking about!
I believe the law is too lenient on those who do not deserve to breath the same air as the innocent.
The current system would have made us pay for his housing, rehabilitation etc.
I'm all for his actions.
And those who disagree with what he did, only judge him after you have gone through the same. - PacoBell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@sl4x0r: Yeah, I was curious about that, too. I looked it up on Wikipedia and elsewhere and came to the same conclusion. The "justifiable homicide" plea is untenable, although the temporary insanity defense seems quite reasonable.
- kennyvader, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18you sanction the killing of this guy just on the mother's say-so? Dear me. You better hope nobody ever makes unfounded child abuse allegations against you, since you seem to think it would be OK for you to be killed if someone did, "just because".
- iignotus, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16Cowards? The only act of cowardice here is to kill someone without proof. And good job on calling someone else a retard a couple comments down from this one, it's a good way to prove both your maturity and how much you care for your fellow human being.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Judges do not call two year olds to testify. They get their testimony in other ways, like consultations with doctors. At the most, they'd videotape that and play it in court.
More likely, they'd rely on physical evidence in this case anyway, since a two year old isn't much good as a witness. - sl4x0r, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14The only time a "justifiable homicide" defense (which you are all dropping so freely) is applicable is to prevent the _immediate_ threat of a very serious crime such as molestation, rape, or murder. This is undeniably an act of vengeance (and as we all agree, an almost understandable one), but this is not covered under "justifiable homicide".
http://www.lectlaw.com/def/j059.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justifiable_homicide - mozzep, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13As for Edington, Maynard said: "Something had to happen that was terrible for this to have occurred." Edington "seemed like a computer geek or something. He was not anybody you would ever feel you were threatened by."
yea right, bitch. i use firefox and linux, you best be threatened by me and my 1337 haxing skillz. oh yea, and don't rape my daughter. - wibblewibble, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Two wrongs dont make a right.
That is all, Thank you. - mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11@Chrissilvanet:
James is the guy that got killed. - Goner, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12everyone knows you run faster with the knife...
- Sukino, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9How does a 52-year-old man get to and molest your 2-year-old child anyway?
- CaffiendCA, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Depending on the local public reaction, I wouldn't be suprised if the DA declined to bring charges.
I have a three year old daughter, and my wife and I don't let her out of our sight. I can imagine the rage the dad felt. Words can't describe.
Here's to a full exculpation of the murder. - stonebear, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Getting to be too many kids on Digg.
