- BeShirtHappy, on 12/04/2008, -0/+40I've never been on a cruise (and really never have a desire to), but if I were... I can't think of too many places worse than Antarctica to be stranded.
- HomeGrown, on 12/05/2008, -1/+25Missed the turn in Albuquerque
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -1/+25what a crappy cruise
- zombie210, on 12/05/2008, -1/+23Yes because they only live in the arctic not antarctica.
- csm888, on 12/05/2008, -0/+20"The 2,400-tonne M/S Explorer had sustained a hole....."
What do you expect from something called M/S Explorer? - whatthahump, on 12/04/2008, -0/+19having actually been to antactica i can say that it is one of the most beautiful places that i have ever seen on this planet.
much of that beauty comes from it being so removed from the rest of the world, so i don't really support the cruise industry going there, no matter how much i would love for everyone to be able to see antarctica.
not to mention the cruise industry does more harm than good for the environment overall - and that having such a fragile environment makes it even more susceptible to stuff like this happening.
but frankly, if i were on a cruise (and i have never been on one either) i can't think of a place on earth i would rather be broken down than antarctica. - inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+18Of all the places to run aground that would be about my last choice.
- ThermiteTerrace, on 12/05/2008, -0/+16Well, a ship story that doesn't involve pirates.
They should consider themselves lucky for that reason.
Also: What would Shackleton Do? - phrenzy, on 12/05/2008, -1/+17Heh... A "minimal amount of water is leaking in"?
The Admiral followed, "The ship's band is still playing, so the passengers know there's no danger of sinking." - inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+14I agree! Not a good place to run aground. But I bet they have plenty of food and booze to keep everyone entertained.
- BeShirtHappy, on 12/04/2008, -0/+7I'm sure it is beautiful. I hate cold weather... so it would not be a good place for me to get stranded.
- whatthahump, on 12/04/2008, -0/+7fair enough - oddly i worked with people there who hated the cold, they just wanted to be there for the beauty of it, or for the work.
that i could never understand.
what i understood even less was if they hated the cold, why would they polar plunge? (that's when the cut a hole in the sea ice, and you jump in the sea water - when i went the water was 27 above and the air was -40 - most everyone went nude except for shoes and the rope around us so that ice crystals didn't form on our clothes as soon as we got out of the water), - inactive, on 12/05/2008, -0/+7damn sockpuppets,
You just got zoologied. - maus56, on 12/05/2008, -1/+8Penguins to the attack!
- AmyVernon, on 12/05/2008, -1/+7Dugg up for accuracy.
- keraneuology, on 12/05/2008, -1/+7Never run out of ice for the margaritas...
- inactive, on 12/05/2008, -2/+8Pirates frozen off the starboard bow captain!
- spokenkaraoke, on 12/05/2008, -0/+6I'd prefer to run aground in the Galapagos.
- godmode, on 12/05/2008, -0/+5♫...a three hour tour ♫
- Flashypoo, on 12/05/2008, -0/+5Winter in the northern hemisphere = virtually no dark around the south pole at the moment. North is where the dark is.
- Meocross, on 12/05/2008, -0/+5What the hell where they doing in Antarctica where they begging for a ice berg to come greet them?
- spritom, on 12/05/2008, -2/+7Bahamas, Cozumel, the South Coast of France, Mexico....ooooh! Hey! How about Antarctica?
- theholyraptor, on 12/05/2008, -0/+5I'd be worried about being stranded with a bunch of pirates encircling me with lots of weapons far more then being stranded in Antarctica.
- inactive, on 12/05/2008, -1/+5and it will stay bloody cold, no chance of the food going off or the beer getting warm.
- microview2007, on 12/05/2008, -0/+4Man the crows nest! Keep a watch out for ice pirates lad!
- MadKevo, on 12/05/2008, -0/+4dark, I don't think so. Nearly midsummers there at the moment. They should be in 24 hour light if this is anything to go by:
http://www.daylightmap.com/ - krekc, on 12/05/2008, -0/+4He surely meant penguins. Right?
Am i rite? - Notyavgkat, on 12/05/2008, -1/+4I hope the heat doesn't stop workin!!!!!
- Pother, on 12/05/2008, -0/+3Yeah they should pop out the videos about Shackleton's expedition to cheer everyone up and comfort them to know they'll make it back all right!
I'd also start serving seal at the buffet, they're going to need to get used to it. - IIECONII, on 12/05/2008, -3/+6Hey, at least you'd get to "experience" Antarctica.
- nemodot, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2You can be worried about those killer penguins running around antartica.
- KyleGoetz, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2@mickstephenson
Why would they want to do a polar plunge? To paraphrase: "Because it's there." --George Mallory, when asked why he wanted to climb Mt. Everest
Personally, I have a plan to do one badass thing on every continent, and mine for Antarctica is to ski at the South Pole or swim in the "hot" spring. Perhaps someone else wanted to take a polar plunge. - KyleGoetz, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2Dugg up for a misquoted Looney Tunes reference.
- reddikilowatt, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2Well, they should have enough food to last for months.
Unfortunately, it will all be served at the midnight buffet. - KyleGoetz, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2Yeah, BushRanger, I'm sure when a ship runs aground, all of a sudden the heaters in the room stop working. I'm sure that electricity no longer works once your ship has run aground.
- inactive, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2Now what is this???
- whatthahump, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1@mickstephenson - kylegoetz has it right - "because it's there." - i did it - it was one of the most amazing things i have EVER done. the adrenaline rush is the one of the greatest i have ever experienced in my life. not only did i do it, but i did it 3 times that first time, then went again a few months later for more. and if i go back i plan on doing it again. i had friends that refused to do it the first time and ended up doing it the second time. they usually do it 3 times in a winter, but the chainsaw broke trying to cut a hole in the ice at the kiwi station (this is not a US gov't sanctioned event)
@kylegoetz - rock on - i say go for it! i want to hit all 3 permanent research stations (mcmurdo, south pole, and palmer). you can plunge at mcmurdo and palmer but at pole they have the 300 club. that's when you wait til the air temp is -100F and you sit in a sauna cranked up to +200F and then you run around outside the pole. more info on that here if you're interested : http://www.penguincentral.com/300Club.html - duggtodeath, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1Were pirates to blame?
- comenius, on 02/24/2009, -0/+1At least they didn't have to worry about a lack of ice for their drinks!
http://www.alaskacruisedealsblog.com - jackpot231, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1on the love boat..........
- ZeroCubed, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1I've had cast away dreams...but they usually involved a remote tropical island with all the food I need and a couple hot people to keep me company.
- whoreable, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1At first I was like why would you want to go there when it is cold as hell. I almost forgot that the seasons are opposite down there. So it might actually be bearable this time of year.
- twoody20007, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1Just wait, I'm sure the ice will melt down there eventually, and the cruise ship will be set free!
- DulcetTone, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1It could be worse: they could have grounded off Somalia
- inactive, on 12/06/2008, -0/+1I did not know this, thanks for the clarification, I thought it was dark all year round down there, shows what I know!
- ASSASSYN360, on 12/06/2008, -0/+1Somali pirates attempt to reach the crippled vessel.
- methylamine, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1Use Firefox with AdBlock and NoScript. I never see ads
- Kinsbane, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1Isn't that a bit out of the way to run from pirates?
- sockpuppets, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1You guys clearly aren't going to the part of Antarctica that I am.
