Crowd Protest in Russia Against Banning of South Park [PICS]
lenta.ru — Prosecutors in Russia want to ban the award-winning satirical U.S. cartoon South Park, calling the series "extremist" after receiving viewer complaints. The Russian Union of Christians of Evangelical Faith had asked prosecutors to ban South Park. Here's what some people in Russia think of the protest. They really love their cartoons!

The objective of the organisors of this action was to draw the publics attention to the legal process which is being undertaken by the Office of the Public Prosecutor to remove the series southpark from the air. In addition he wants to order the closure of the television channel 2x2 due to pressure from religious organisation Кенни, (Kenni?) a character from South Park has become a symbol of struggle for viewers of the popular cartoon.

If anyone has ever wondered why an atheist would care so much religion, this is why. If it's offensive then don't ***** watch it. Generally episodes of south park have a logically well thought out moral to the story. Too bad these people are to ignorant to see the big picture.- badenglishihave, on 09/14/2008, -3/+5I'm a Christian and I find it disgusting that these people want to censor free speech. That being said, I wouldn't write South Park material but a lot of their stuff is very insightful.

- JackDN, on 09/14/2008, -3/+6The ban won`t succeed...but if it does people will just start downloading them via torrents...the only losers: South Park creators.

For gods sakes...keep this ***** out
- Evilena, on 09/14/2008, -0/+7Its great these Russians are standing up to censorship, but in reality I am sure they have no problem downloading South Park and watching it.
- Albumen, on 09/14/2008, -10/+1You are assuming they have computers and access to broadband, which doubtless some do, but not in the numbers we have here. Remember, they are in a whole different country across the sea!
- djoobacca, on 09/14/2008, -0/+13they do have computers and broadband, you imbecile.
- drewbe121212, on 09/14/2008, -0/+10lol. How ignorant. I've worked with several programmers from there as well.
- x060t, on 09/14/2008, -0/+9Well, in fact broadband is booming here in Russia now. For $50/mo i can get 25Mbps flat rate or 100Mbps with ~200Gb data cap. Most ISP also include IPTV pack - around 100 channels, including this "2x2" one. And although internet market penetration is less than in U.S, we still have millions online.
- svendm, on 09/17/2008, -0/+1Unlike Americans, then?
IMHO, the Russians have a bit more moral justification in doing so anyway. "South Park" is produced for the US market. It's paid for by advertising on Comedy Central.
Whether or not Russians download it or not doesn't really threaten the show one bit. It could, in theory, mean a loss of profit if it lead to Russian TV not buying the syndication rights. But South Park is NOT a first-run syndicated show. Most shows in the US aren't. And even those who are, aren't produced with foreign syndication rights in mind.
IOW: No American TV shows are being produced on the basis that they can sell them abroad. They're all being produced for, and paid for by, the domestic market. Everything else is just a bonus for the production company.
- Albumen, on 09/14/2008, -10/+1You are assuming they have computers and access to broadband, which doubtless some do, but not in the numbers we have here. Remember, they are in a whole different country across the sea!

- truck87bp, on 09/14/2008, -2/+8It was nice to see a demonstration without riot police and Smiles on many faces in the pictures. Thats what I got from the pictures. Wow, a peaceful demonstration in Russia. Makes you wonder?
- BloodWenis, on 09/14/2008, -7/+4You're welcome.
-America. - djoobacca, on 09/14/2008, -3/+6it's peaceful because demonstrators aren't western backed shills who came there to start riots with their gay parades and banned communist parties.
- x060t, on 09/14/2008, -1/+2gay parade in Russia is bad idea - we're intolerant to gays and that would require alot of police to grant them safety.
as for communists - there's no communist party as you imagine it. the one that calls itself so is actually a government-controlled opposition, kind of show-off for the West.
- x060t, on 09/14/2008, -1/+2gay parade in Russia is bad idea - we're intolerant to gays and that would require alot of police to grant them safety.
- mehan, on 09/14/2008, -1/+7what, are Russians supposed to be inherently evil and violent?
- x060t, on 09/14/2008, -0/+1It's peaceful since they don't have any political demands. If you try demonstration against govt. - be sure, there'll be more policemen than protesters.
- tech42er, on 09/14/2008, -2/+1Um, most demonstrations in Russia are peaceful. And then the government tries to put them down, with violence...
- 3Dimka, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1It's pretty amazing comparing to the recent protests during RNC.
- BloodWenis, on 09/14/2008, -7/+4You're welcome.

- lead2thehead, on 09/14/2008, -3/+25Actually, several million people took to the streets for that. It turns out that you can't really change things just by standing outside and complaining.
- Stormwern, on 09/14/2008, -1/+18There were plenty of demonstrations at the RNC, only in the US you don't get to march while you apparently do in Russia.

- evlnte, on 09/25/2008, -5/+6Liberty is lost one freedom at a time. First, you are not allowed to see or hear certain things. Then they tell you things that can't be said or published. Ultimately, they begin to dictate what sort of property you can own. Finally, after stripping away all you rights you are standing in a communist country where the individual serves the State instead on the reverse. Fight for Southpark! I was born in a comunist country and the U.S. saved my family from that sh!t.
- nick1971, on 09/14/2008, -2/+7One should also reflect. With the escaltion of Executive powers over the last 8 years which one of the following criteria does the US not fulfill.
TheFreeDictionary.com defines Fascism as: “A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.”
Other elements of Fascism include:
Powerful idea of nationalism
Powerful executive control in government
Lower human rights outlook
Military reigns supreme
Corporations wield great power
Idea that National Security is at great risk to some threat
Identifying of enemies/scapegoats that unifies citizens in Patriotism
Mass media controlled by State and Corporations
Fixed elections
Rampant corruption
Unlimited power held by police force- djoobacca, on 09/14/2008, -1/+7hey that sounds like US!
- AceferN, on 10/11/2008, -0/+0Do you even know what communism is?
Haha.
And considering during the 70-, those "communist" nations were in a ***** due to gay Gorbachov who was a reformist, and his whole ***** that got the SU in a 'great depression'. He made the SU crap all in the name of capitalism.
- nick1971, on 09/14/2008, -2/+7One should also reflect. With the escaltion of Executive powers over the last 8 years which one of the following criteria does the US not fulfill.
- koolgiy, on 09/14/2008, -0/+8I find that most of the people who want South Park banned or off the air - don't see the underlying message in the episodes, or allusion to something bigger. Basically - people who want it banned are ***** idiots.
- x060t, on 09/14/2008, -0/+3I can understand attempts of banning really extremist websites, but banning cartoons on the same grounds is ridiculous. First govt. banned "happy tree friends" on the same channel, now "south park" - this just doesn't make sense, it's just our church lobbying these decisions.
- cabdirazzaq, on 09/14/2008, -8/+2Banning South Park is a tribute to quality television. Simpsons FTW!

I didn't see any that were hot.
- jdutil, on 09/14/2008, -4/+4Wont be long before the steel curtain goes back up if South Park is banned. There is a South Park episode about this where once your able to pull one show there is no end to what shows get pulled.
- Pother, on 09/14/2008, -1/+2Well once again a sub-group of humanity that finds offense with a created-work fails to realize they are simply helping advertise that which they don't like to the rest of humanity. Now more people than ever will watch South Park. And if they knew the show, they'd know it backs down from NOTHING. So out go the Canadians, and in come the Russians.
- funkytommyman, on 09/14/2008, -6/+6In North America, South Park bans you
- Kirion, on 09/14/2008, -3/+4You need to understand that its not about religion or censorship. In month or too, there will be "auction" for broadcasting frequency of 2x2 channel. Some competitor of this 2x2 channel used nice excuse to throw whole channel out of broadcasting. It's not really about South park, or happy tree friends (which they banned already). And this competitor are using goverment officials for this - oftenly used practice in russia, where corruption grow by 1000% for last 8 years of Putin's regime.

Seems to be a lot of articles lately on Russians losing their freedoms? Hey tovarish?- x060t, on 09/14/2008, -0/+2Uhm - in fact, things are pretty stable here - the very fact that cartoon ban gets into news, speaks for itself. Sure, some part of freedom that existed in 90's is now withdrawn, but it's not that govt. is really enforcing further rights withdrawal now. Most news about losing freedom are currently coming from U.S.
- vxp19, on 09/14/2008, -0/+1Those "all forms" aren't accepted any more than broken english is accepted for proper english.
