- slashpd, on 05/21/2008, -0/+10yes , this is really good way of data slicing the demographics
http://twitter.com/peterdawson/statuses/816091730 - JeremiahOwyang, on 05/21/2008, -2/+9Let's make a difference, thanks
- zdiddy85, on 05/21/2008, -1/+7Just donated to http://www.redcross.org, and you should too!
- sockpuppets, on 05/21/2008, -0/+5Quick, everyone to the diggmobile!
- manresaclara, on 05/21/2008, -0/+4How many people are just digging this article and how many are actually donating money? Hmm...
- biggsuccess, on 05/21/2008, -0/+4Scary. Very hard to comprehend.
- inactive, on 05/21/2008, -0/+3There were 10 million homeless people before the quake.
There are over 200,000 homeless veterans in the US. - sockpuppets, on 05/21/2008, -0/+3Yeah my hurricane machine did well with Katrina, I'm just letting the wind build up in it before I release another.
- Fengpost, on 05/21/2008, -0/+3In reality, 5 million is at the low end of the estimation. There are predictions of 8 to 10 million people left homeless by China. So, donate to a good cause and help those in need.
- AussieCynic, on 05/21/2008, -0/+2it does put it in perspective doesnt it....
thats more than the whole state I live in.... - sockpuppets, on 05/21/2008, -0/+2The reply button's there for a reason.
- Dumbledorito, on 05/21/2008, -0/+2I'm sure a large segment of our society would say this was their own fault for being immoral or being too lazy to find work away from somewhere prone to earthquakes.

- pseudononymist, on 05/21/2008, -1/+3Please be careful about donating money to charitable organizations in China, there's a pretty bad history of corruption surrounding donated money here. Even the Red Cross (it's locally run) is not above suspicion: http://www.danwei.org/charity/the_chinese_red_cros ...
Donating material items such as food, water and shelter would be better. - MerrBrans, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1I am donating and fingers crossed that it reaches those in need. Sometimes you just have to trust.
- luke16, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1I just donated £5. Im a student so i can't afford much, but if everyone donates a little, it will be a big help. =)
Btw your link did not work for me. Here is the link for people in Britain: http://www.redcross.org.uk/index.asp?id=39992 - rajivdoshi, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1when you shared these numbers last week, I was shocked and now seeing these pictures of US cities adds even more perspective to this issue. Dugg, hope this helps inspires others to help.
- souljaboytellem, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1Yeah, you should probably do it in Florida 3 hurricanes weren't enough in 2004
- khail250, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1Uh... not even close to the average!
I own a factory in a relatively rich city in china, and a good salary is 250-350 per month (this is with a college education).
unless you are talking about the major cities, Bejing Hong Kong, then thats closer to the average.. but when you can go to a 5 star restaurant for 2 people and pay 12 bucks, the cost of living there and quality of living is a bit better.. - jstorerj, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1Great support! Keep it coming!
- inactive, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1Yeah keep hearing about those man made hurricanes and earthquakes. glad you confirmed it for me.
- inactive, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1Why should we give any of our money and aid up when people in our own country are starving? You should probably be more concerned with homeless people or the unemployed in your own town, before you send money overseas.
Let's say you lost your job, You could go get a meal at your local soup kitchen. Except this month they sent supplies and money to China. Does that make sense to you? - dcmusicfusion, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1This story needs more Digg love....from diggers with a heart...
- huperniketes, on 05/21/2008, -1/+2Disasters in the U.S. tend to be man-made, so your pseudo-patriotism is just a cop-out. Do you bother to help clean pollution in your town or volunteer at a local charity? Are you a member of your neighborhood crime watch and do you help register voters or work at your voting precinct? Don't tell me you're a model Murkin, show it.
- romistrub, on 05/21/2008, -1/+2Same here... except Canada.
P.S. What about your neighbours to the North? :( - inactive, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1If Canada needed it, Yeah we should help. The Americas come first!
- Brian48216, on 05/21/2008, -2/+2Funny when China gave the US 4 million in aid relief during Hurricane Katrina.
Disaster relief is something that should go beyond borders because it effects everyday people who just want to live their lives and make sure their kids have a better future.
Pull your head out of your ass. - PolarExpress, on 05/21/2008, -0/+0This is 17 times the size of the total population in my country. That's a lot of people.
- inactive, on 05/21/2008, -5/+5China can pay for that ***** themselves. My money will go to help American disaster relief first and then to our neighbors in the south before I send it to a country that can very well pay for it themselves.
- jimCTC, on 05/21/2008, -2/+2amazing. thank you jeremiah. i cant imagine how our country would deal with this. Katrina? Fail. Katrina X 10?....
- SunAlex, on 09/06/2008, -0/+0good idea. It will be nice.

- filmoreslim20, on 05/21/2008, -0/+0wow that really puts the quake's impact into perspective.
- mikewalsh, on 05/21/2008, -2/+1I'll help to spread the word..
- pulpster, on 05/21/2008, -2/+1That is an amazing figure.
- mherick, on 05/21/2008, -1/+0Beautiful! If you think about it, the average annual income in China is $6000 which comes out to be one trip to Starbuck's a day for me, even donating a little money to Red Cross will make a huge difference! Thanks for sharing this with us Jeremiah!
- xakto, on 05/21/2008, -2/+1Dugg, this is karl BTW :-)
- JeremiahOwyang, on 05/21/2008, -2/+1Thanks Mike, Slashpd
- giggey, on 05/21/2008, -2/+0That is almost the entire population of Honduras (where I'm from).

- JeremiahOwyang, on 05/21/2008, -3/+1Karl (xakto) thanks bud
- jstorerj, on 05/21/2008, -2/+0Dugg. Great analysis Jeremiah.
- reedts, on 05/21/2008, -2/+0Thanks for putting things in perspective....I'm passing this around.
- Nakamoto, on 05/21/2008, -4/+1It would be cool if the Chinese government used some of the wealth they're sitting on to help their people, and their neighbors in Burma. Countries such as China and the United States have the capacity to cope with disaster far better than countries such as Burma.
- Incman, on 05/21/2008, -5/+2If China wants to be a superpower, it better solve its problems all by itself. Chinese government is super-rich. They have more than US$400 billion in foreign exchange reserves. They do not need external aid to come out of this crisis. I would rather donate my money to poorer countries like Myanmar and Sudan.
- JoeB4ever, on 05/21/2008, -6/+2there was an earthquake in china?
