I think you are a little off on your scale - according to this article, http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/article1951278.ece, a Klimt auctioned for $134m was the most money ever spent on art at an auction, so I think $990m is a wee bit high. - themicah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13here's a better story: http://www.starnewsonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070102/NEWS/701020364/1004/news06

There is this great feature on digg that allows you to submit stories (like the one you are spamming). Then people have a link to the article and they can digg it if they like. Give it a try *****. - tlukint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10This is the most vague article. How did a NC couple suddenly question if they had an original Picasso in their living room? Did an art historian randomly wonder into their house? Or have they been watching too much Antique Road Show lately?
- countmandible, on 11/15/2007, -3/+13As opposed to what you've just done with your 'frank and honest' assessment of art-lovers?
- consonance, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12It must be hard to sign your paintings when your name is Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Crispín Crispiniano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso.
- EasY_TargeT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10most artists dont become famous until they are dead
- Shuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Value is a funny thing actually. A seemingly simple piece of art can end up costing millions and you wouldn't even know it. This reminds of how my grandfather practically gave away an early vintage radio he had, thinking it was a piece of crap.
But nevertheless, when the seller sees this article, there will only be one word running through his head: "*****". - ahutch1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"Pete Bivens and his fianc had the painting analyzed last week by art historians. They think the painting could be an original piece...Bivens and his fianc bought the painting at a yard sale more than a decade ago for one dollar."
doesn't anyone find it odd they have been engaged for over 10 years??? - otheruser, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10.....
- kmartshopper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8***** you antique roadshow
- sakuraz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8datagod//Just because you've narrowed the definition of real art to your measly standards doesn't make any other artworks any less valuable or expressive.
- 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5one must remember how many works Picasso made
an absolute prolific amount of paintings, sculptures, and drawings
some are much better than others.
Vermeer [girl with the pearl earring]
on the other hand made less than 40
during his whole career.
they are both great in their own rights. - iamshades, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6im gonna go to yard sales more often
- themicah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You get that from eating too many crabs. It's the SPICE.
- shreveyboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"All art is useless. It is alright to make useless things, but just don't marvel at them."
- Oscar Wilde's rebuttal to the critics who wrote 'Dorian Grey' off as worthless (oh, and possibly badly paraphrased). - shosterman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Something is only worth as much as someone else would pay for it. So far it's worth $1.
- Managore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"I'd buy that for a dollar!"
- shreveyboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I put this a few lines up, but I feel it's worth saying here as well:
"All art is useless. It is alright to make useless things, but just don't marvel at them."
- Oscar Wilde's rebuttal to the critics who wrote 'Dorian Grey' off as worthless (oh, and possibly badly paraphrased). - sulf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If ordinary people can't see any value in this painting and price it $1, why should it cost more? What difference does it make if it was painted by Picasso or Joe Sixpack? I thought paintings make people famous, not vice versa.
- rockwellpa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Does it matter???
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"and it wasn't even one of his more famous paintings"...Yeah...something tells me that THIS one isn't one of his more famous paintings either. I doubt many people have the famous Picassos and are selling them at yard sales.
- berfmurret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2NOW whos being elitist?
- rockwellpa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just to follow up:
http://www.wect.com/global/story.asp?s=5901219 - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Did anyone else's browser slow to a crawl on that site? Whatever they're doing there, it really bogged down my browser--some kind of funky coding or badly done Flash crap.
- Negyxo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Picasso is kinda like black coffee. To the uninitiated, it's crap. To the others it's heaven.
- cam0man, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@datagod
it wasn't post-modernist-cubism, it was just 'cubism'. For the record, Picasso is well known for his cubism, but did many other types of art which appear more traditional.
Way to judge a book by it's cover... - 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that guy looks like a demon in that photo
[i have blue eyes too, but his look damn creepy] - CodeMasseur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is one of the reasons I love going to yard sales. You never know what you're going to find!
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3damn...that is a bargain!!
- empeethree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2damn I thought I was lucky finding some boxed atari 2600 games at value village.
- rockwellpa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No Idea.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3So in a double blind test picassos are worth nothing. After you know who painted it THEN it's worth something. Picasso paintings are like name brand sneakers, there not actualy better, it's the name that goes behind it.
- wazaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He didn't purcahse his fiance at a yard sale.. nor do I assume he stored her in the attic :P
- selrahc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hell, I'd pay $2:)
- selrahc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2More than seems reasonable or sane...
- electricmime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This wasn't really a blind test, they bought it because it had his name on it. They thought it was fake and they only bought it as a joke because his girlfriend (was she his finance at the time?) was a fan. Someone may have thought it would be worth more if it didn't have his name on it (they wouldn't have assumed it was automatically a fake piece that was attempting to trick people). I don't know.. I know little of art.
Wouldn't an off-brand pair of shoes be worth more than a fake pair of nice shoes (I know little of shoes as well)? - themicah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Silly person.
- dep01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"experts think" and "probably a picasso" -- fake.
- selrahc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because if somebody else is willing to pay me millions... I'm gonna let him. I'd rather have crazy millions than an ordinary dollar;)
- Brokenmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Umm, there was no price estimate on what its worth though... any ideas?
- jedikv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would like to hear what the original seller thinks of all this
- Midas7g, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You'd figure that after "more than a decade" they would have gone and tied the knot, yes? I mean, if you've spent so long with a person you find out that 10 YEARS ago you both bought a painting now worth millions... maybe you should get married and stop dancing around the issue?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Interesting. Misleading title though: Should state POSSIBLY a Picaso Painting for $1...
I wonder when it will be my day to go to Goodwill, or another store of it's type and find something amazing. - kylesellers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, two spelling errors in the same article. Way to go guys!
- rockwellpa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know man, I agree with you. The difference is though this guy is dead and he can't make anymore. Yet, he's front page digg.
