- inactive, on 03/24/2009, -0/+68Corrupt cops need to be indicted, tried, and imprisoned for a very long time if guilty.
- draxenato, on 03/23/2009, -2/+37Where's Batman when you need him ?
Seriously though, if things are this bad then it's only a matter of time before the citizens take matters into their own hands. - captainglobal, on 03/24/2009, -2/+33“The atom bombs are piling up in the factories, the police are prowling through the cities, the lies are streaming from the loudspeakers, but the earth is still going round the sun.”
- George Orwell - ironhide, on 03/23/2009, -0/+26Did you even read the story?
- stubear, on 03/24/2009, -2/+26I'm OK with life terms for cop killers but we need to implement life terms for cops found to be criminally corrupt. Cops need to be held to a higher standard and this might help clean up the mess for the most part. I'm sure a few will still try to get away with it but if you know you might wind up locked away for the rest of your life then you might think twice before you accept that bribe.
- TimDigg, on 03/24/2009, -9/+32For me, the cops are the worst part of the government...
They harrass people, won't leave people alone and typically have mental complex where they have to act big and bad....I'm a big boy, I can protect myself... - theskillwithin, on 03/24/2009, -2/+24Judges side with cops.
cops can make up massive amounts of evidence, that is just their witness account.
civilian witness accounts are only 50% accurate.
when a cop has a motive to lie to get more arrests then why is his testimony more accountable? - aimhelix, on 03/24/2009, -0/+19LOL. Based on the thumbnail, you know that dude was up to no good.
- trolleyfan, on 03/24/2009, -0/+18No, no he didn't...
- o2sk8, on 03/24/2009, -3/+19Wait a sec...
"and Dwayne Johnson, accused of leaving work four hours early on numerous Tuesdays"
I wonder if he was doing to to film "Walking Tall" where the plot was basically this exact situation. He must have just been getting into the role. - ironhide, on 03/24/2009, -0/+14Technically Gotham and Metropolis are both stand-ins for NY.
Metropolis is New York in daytime and Gotham is NY at night. - Latimer, on 03/24/2009, -0/+14WTF happened to that guys head? No mention of it in the article??? Cmon!
- Igrift, on 03/24/2009, -6/+19Cops are just glorified response units. They don't keep us safe. When was the last time you were walking down the street and saw a crime being commited? What are the odds of a cop just happening to be around while someone is commiting a crime? At best they drive around and give out traffic tickets.
- Hexxd, on 03/24/2009, -0/+11Sick and tired of corruption.
- jspegele, on 03/24/2009, -0/+11The article isn't about NYC, it's about Schenectady, NY.
- RudeTurnip, on 03/24/2009, -0/+10This is why we have the Second Amendment.
- zombiecarlin, on 03/24/2009, -0/+10Yeah but what about people who can't protect themselves?
- stubear, on 03/24/2009, -0/+9The title says NY mayor and last I checked, NYC isn't all of NY despite what most of its residents think.
- plainOldFool, on 03/24/2009, -0/+9The town did not smell what he was cooking.
- moose26, on 03/24/2009, -0/+8What usually happens most of the time:
Lawyers will be hired for them.
Information will be muddied up.
Protecting the department's image will be of primary focus.
They will get a slap on the wrist and at worst case scenario, allowed to be laid off or quit.
A few months later they will re-apply and rejoin the police department and go on as usual. - JasonCox, on 03/24/2009, -2/+10He's in Gotham City, not New York City.
:-P - Culero, on 03/24/2009, -0/+8it ends with you. *diggs down*
- jameskong15, on 03/24/2009, -1/+9You think cops are bad, wait till you have military with machine guns wandering around trying to figure out how to police a city.
- ilrak, on 03/24/2009, -0/+8I thought the same thing. WTF??? Is it a tattoo? Did he crack his head open? It just casually says "pictured left" like he doesnt look like some ***** crazy ass neo-nazi freak.
- Barackalypse, on 03/24/2009, -0/+7This is insanity, the Government punishing the people because it is to incompetent to keep its police department free of corruption? This isn't some huge force, they have 160 sworn officers for a city of 61,000, how hard can it be to hire a new chief and 160 new cops?
http://www.schenectadypd.com/about/index.php - ScaredOfTheMan, on 03/24/2009, -6/+13I thought the albino monk died... apparently he lived on to become a cop in NYC
- stubear, on 03/24/2009, -1/+8They aren't JUST taking a bribe, they are abusing the trust instilled in the police force, potentially causing far more harm to the community then just a single incident. How many people fear going to the cops because of corruption, real or imagined? How many good cops are smeared by bad cops like these guys? There's a MUCH bigger picture that has to be carefully considered. There needs to be a STRONG deterrent to abusing this trust and losing your job isn't enough, especially with police forces being unionized making them far more difficult to fire.
- faskill, on 03/24/2009, -0/+7They need to at least serve the minimum terms. Their cases shouldn't be paraded in front of the public to imply that action is taken all the while waiting for the peoples outrage to dwindle or be misdirected and then sweep the real charges under the rug then instituting lesser charges with inappropriate ramifications.
Overall though, the idea that if a crime is committed by a peace officer or a person in power, the severity of their consequences should be higher; if a crime is perpetrated against a peace officer, any and all consequences against the perpetrator are increased, in some cases doubled, tripled and more. - mcquitty, on 03/24/2009, -0/+6The problem with cops is this fraternal attitude that says they can never turn on each other. It's like a union, you must defend all of them regardless of how you personally feel.
I feel bad for them. Most, but not all, of the police officers I have known have been good. Many of them tend to mainly have cop friends and keep others at a distance. Even the good cops hate the bad cops but never enough to actually do something about it. - Solkre, on 03/24/2009, -3/+9He's commenting on himself sucking his own dick.
- Andrwmorph, on 03/24/2009, -0/+6Throat problems.
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6I was gonna leave it alone because your statement itself was inane but not really bury-worthy, but since you're whining about your buries, I feel somehow obligated to contribute to them. Just thought you should know <3
- chanop, on 03/24/2009, -0/+5Disagree, out of staters think NYC covers all of NY. Upstaters want nothing to do with NYC.
- DrDash, on 03/24/2009, -3/+8Taking a bribe = life sentence. really? That seems fair /s
They lose their job, and can not go to another "company" to get hired, spend some time in jail and are humiliated. But you would put them in jail for life? - Hockey13, on 03/24/2009, -0/+5Neither is Schenectady.
- GeekNurse, on 03/24/2009, -0/+5I didn't, for a second, think it was NYC but how would you have written phrased the title?
"Mayor of a little podunk town in New York State that isn't NYC mulls martial law due to corrupt Barney Fife like police officers" Here's the thumbnail: http://www.theaccidentalnegotiator.com/wp-content/ ... - Gguillorn, on 03/24/2009, -0/+5There are military people all the time in NYC, in places that are considered terrorist targets like Times Square. Their job isn't to stop people from smoking weed or anything like that though, they mostly just stand around looking badass and making people feel uncomfortable/safe, depending on your view.
- Travelsonic, on 03/24/2009, -0/+5Or maybe not every criminal is the type that ends up published in "America's Dumbest Criminals"
- RonBurgundy76, on 03/24/2009, -0/+5It might help if you weren't a babbling ***** idiot.
Also... complaining about being buried only makes us laugh at you even more because your tears taste like candy. - jameskong15, on 03/24/2009, -4/+9Wow, using anecdotal evidence to claim that police don't keep us safe. Get this man a Pulitzer...
- TheMidnight, on 03/24/2009, -0/+5Mysterion will save us.
- Watsonian, on 03/24/2009, -0/+5I grew up in Albany and now live in Manhattan. Everyone I have met that actually grew up in the city has no clue what upstate NY is like, or the rest of the country besides CT and NJ. Most Manhattanites are scared of leaving their apartments and think that if they go camping they are most definitely going to be eaten by a bear.
The Adirondacks are one of the most beautiful parks in the world BTW. - greenvortex, on 03/24/2009, -0/+4He is officer Michael R. Brown, who reportedly crashed his truck into the back of another car stopped at a red light, sustaining a head injury as a result. He tried to drive away with major damage to his truck, and got about 2/10 of mile. He refused the breathalyzer test.
- TheVirus, on 03/24/2009, -0/+4Yeah, he started making trouble in my neighborhood.
- korashime2001, on 03/24/2009, -1/+5That guy in the portrait reminds me of Kurgan.
- IphtashuFitz, on 03/24/2009, -0/+4Geez... I went to college in Schenectady for four years. Thank god I never had any run-ins with the cops while I was there. But this makes me wonder if it's part of the reason the campus security department seemed rather inept at the time I was there...
- aduzik, on 03/24/2009, -0/+4If you get in one little fight, your mom'll get scared, so you'll be moving in with your auntie and your uncle in Bel Air.
- warriorscot, on 03/24/2009, -0/+4US police recruitment is a little bizarre in many places becoming a police officer isn't that easy and only applicants with degrees or high levels of intelligence are even selected. It's almost the opposite in the US in many places which seems utterly bizarre. Federal police standards are at the right level but the lower down the "chain" the lower the standards which is wrong.
Cops should be smart, they should know the law and why they need to enforce it. They should be able to use common sense and experience and have the training and skills that any cop can step into anothers job with little difficulty from walking streets to investigating organised crime.
They should also be paid appropriate to the risk. Cops are governement employees and so can't get paid extravegantly but they should still be paid enough that they can live comfortably and so eliminate much of the temptation of bribery and corruption. While you will always have greedy people most won't risk a comfortable normal living standard at a remote chance of a better one if the life they have isnt at risk. - aduzik, on 03/24/2009, -0/+4Once again, BSG saves the day:
"There's a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state, the other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people." - BoneheadFarker, on 03/24/2009, -0/+4Don't bother. McMahon just has him working those nights. When you sign up to the WWE, you sign up for life...
