- msaleem, on 10/10/2007, -9/+10Wow. Absolutely great find. Dugg!
- carpespasm, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9just keep in mind that anything above 50 means it's OK. bridges are apparently called deficient as soon as any minor problem occours. it's just the term used to describe anything that's not in the height of perfect order.
- Ungh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Strange, but a number of bridges that they listed in my area have been replace in the last 7 years. This list must be obsolete, at least for my county.
- donwilson2, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Nice to see one of the roads that I travel on is rated at a 34.7.
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3don't worry I have a bridge rated at 3.0 and 4.0 nearby... but it's IL in near the WI border. So I wasn't expecting much.
- readthis, on 10/10/2007, -11/+39Amazing--our transportation infastructure is crumbilng. Why then do we borrow almost 2 billion a day to fight a war in Iraq?
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6because were really good at crumbling transportation infrastructure?
- KenMo, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2Wow that was good "readthis" you almost have the mantra down. It almost appears as an original thought instead of just regurgitating what you have read or heard elsewhere.
You have it figured out. If we were not in Iraq and Afghanistan, all of the bridges would be fixed and all of the schools would have adequate funding.- ayeroxor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Funny how on 9/10/2001 we couldn't find the money to stop our country's youth from becoming the dumbest in western society, but after 9/11, we miraculously find 2 billion dollars a day that we could spend on something new.
- ayeroxor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Funny how on 9/10/2001 we couldn't find the money to stop our country's youth from becoming the dumbest in western society, but after 9/11, we miraculously find 2 billion dollars a day that we could spend on something new.
- p51d007, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4wow! that was fast! only 3 replies before a mention about Iraq..........you liberals from the dailyKOS & democraticunderground.com
are slipping! - floorman56, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Maybe if Minnesota wasn't spending 1 BILLION DOLLARS on a baseball stadium they could fix the bridge.
- shipple, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Although I don't like the War on Iraq, I don't think it has anything to do with infrastructure. The feds shouldn't be paying for roads, imho.
- aahpandasrun, on 10/10/2007, -9/+5Still, isn't the American highway/bridge system considered to be the best in the world? Think of how poor the bridges are in other countries.
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7depends on what you mean by best? The autobahn is very very well taken care of. Then again, the size of the autobahn isn't comparable to the size of US highways. So it's hard to get a fair comparison.
- nhand42, on 10/10/2007, -7/+5"Still, isn't the American highway/bridge system considered to be the best in the world? "
Well, no, not anymore. The USA has been in steady decline for the past few decades and now ranks behind many countries in several metrics. And it's not just your infrastructure such as roads. Healthcare you now rank 37th in the world. Education you now rank 4th in the world.
The reality is that your country is going downhill. It's no surprise: when you're at the top the only direction is down. The USA used to be the top model for democracy, freedom and liberty. However I've recently refused free travel to the USA (for work) because your jackboot wearing government can't be trusted anymore.
Recently you've had an entire city destroyed because of cost-cutting to basic infrastructure. An entire state lost electrical power a few years ago due to mismanagement. Yet behind all of this, the most amount of money ever is being spent on the war machine and profits for greedy executives. Your government is robbing the citizens to enrich their own bloated lifestyles. And you allow this to happen!
It's about time for your next revolution. Rise up and take back your country before it's too late. - Wink, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Isn´t it also one of the oldest modern infrastructures of its type? The US led the world in their highways and dams and such, but they´re starting to get a lil´ old..
- nhand42, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2And as a corollary to what I wrote earlier. The citizens of a country in decline always tell themselves they live in "the best country in the world" and have "the best whatever in the world". They repeat it to themselves until even they believe it's true. They censor people who claim otherwise. They dispute facts that prove otherwise. This self-denial continues until even the citizens stop believing the lies, but by then it's too late. It happens with every superpower from the Romans to the British. Yours is no different.
- obliviousfool, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6This list is a little bit scary.
- KenMo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Then please don't drive.
- jmpeagle, on 10/10/2007, -11/+3I like how the blue states are overwhelmingly F_cked when it comes to their bridges. Ironically, the best blue state is Minnesota.
- mishabear, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Gee, that couldn't have anything to do with the red states being in the desert or flatlands while the coastal blue states have salt water air.
- jmpeagle, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7click on the states. The vast majority of counties have NO problems whereas only a select few counties have ALL the problems. It's a government problem, not a weather problem.
- thatsoccerchick, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2actually the state with the best bridges (following the percent in either catagory statistic) is arizona, followed by nevada and THEN minnesota..
- mishabear, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Gee, that couldn't have anything to do with the red states being in the desert or flatlands while the coastal blue states have salt water air.
- JoCliMe, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1Awesome, my in the middle of nowhere county has 1 bridge that is functionally obsolete...And it only goes over a canal!
- dupswapdrop, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9Hey we can always find money to shoot people in far off lands, build stadiums for rich ball players to play in and fund campaigns for crazy politicians. But money to fix things for the general good forget about it!
- Urusai, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3What are you, a Communist? Go kiss your good buddy Osama while you're over in Americasuxistan.
lol - KenMo, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4Ummm... pssst. MN is a Blue state.
They have a 2 Billion dollar surplus and they wanted to raise taxes.
They use the money for Liberal priorities. Bridges are not on their list.
Oh what am I thinking. It's Bush's fault. - p51d007, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Gee whiz golly.......wouldn't life be so much better with YOU in charge of things.......
Thank god the only thing you are in charge of is the button on your mouse.
- Urusai, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3What are you, a Communist? Go kiss your good buddy Osama while you're over in Americasuxistan.
- cw1242, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Props to TXDOT for keeping Texas' 49,000+ bridges in good shape.
- WhatNot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4What was the bridge that collapsed rated? I have no idea where this bridge would be located in Minnesota.
- unreg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Now days, in the Mississippi
- jpmoney03, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Not 100% but I think it was 50.0. I would think it is 0.0 now though.
- timsline, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6How much has been spent on rebuilding the infrastructure of other countries, when we can't even keep up our own. If it's not steam pipes exploding it's bridges falling or some other disaster next week. Way to go Mr. Prez. You've been doing a great job protecting American Life by ignoring the real needs of this country.
We don't need terrorists to take down our cities and bridges, we can do that perfectly well on our own through neglect.- Darkhowling91, on 10/10/2007, -6/+3Brilliant! Blame George Bush for bridge collapses.
- p51d007, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2Yeah.......like everything started falling apart started Jan 2001 and will magically fix itself in Jan 2009.
Short sighted people who have blamed Bush for everything just crack me up. What's sad is that they
vote!
- Darkhowling91, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22*****. We're all going to die.
- Richandler, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Um these aren't all Bridges as people know them. In fact they are overpasses. Very short ones. Not even half the size of the on in Minnesota. The list is also inaccurate because 2 listed as deficient in my area was just reinforced.
- AlphaEta, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I also noticed a few railroad bridges on the list. Of course, one in my home town has a rating of 15.5, so I hope there isn't too much hazardous material being transported on those rails!
- obliviousfool, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2There are quite a few railroad bridges on the list. I saw one with a rating of 3.
- dotlizard, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2ok look even if an overpass is half the size of the Mn. bridge, isn't that bloody well bad enough? and besides, i can think of any number of overpasses i pass over (driving around southern california freeways) that are as big as that. and overpasses also pass over other roads (at least they do in LA, ya know?)
so pardon me if i am ... somewhat concerned that 25 - 40% of the above-ground stretches of road i drive on are DEFICIENT or OBSOLETE.
- AlphaEta, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I also noticed a few railroad bridges on the list. Of course, one in my home town has a rating of 15.5, so I hope there isn't too much hazardous material being transported on those rails!
- Pile, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2This is excellent but does anyone have a list of the original source information? It must be somewhere. I don't trust mainstream media's interpretation of the data.
- jcaino, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3i'mexpecting to see PA on that list. we have a tremendous amount of bridges.
- xmkatx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3One of the worst! Good to know ALL the bridges I cross are deficient. Not surprised.
- Cartman911, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0The one listed for Lancaster in PA (Dillerville Road) has been under major construction for 3 months and is due to re-open in a week or so. Less than a mile form my home. Thank god.
- xmkatx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3One of the worst! Good to know ALL the bridges I cross are deficient. Not surprised.
- floatingpoints, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15Mass hysteria much?
This train of thought is amusing. A group of people hijack planes, crash them into towers, therefore, everyone is a potential terrorist. One bridge collapses, therefore, all brides are suspect.- j33buscr1p3s, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Appropriately enough both threats have the same solution: Duct Tape.
- barryiggins, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8yes...I find the bride of Frankenstein particularly suspicious
- floatingpoints, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Off with her head!
- megaloid, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Why am I not shocked that D.C. has the highest percentage of deficient bridges on the map?
- p51d007, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1LOL........kind of ironic that the nations capital has the worst batch of bridges. Kind of mirrors what people
think of politicians
- p51d007, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1LOL........kind of ironic that the nations capital has the worst batch of bridges. Kind of mirrors what people
- mdesjardins, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Great Link! I think it's slightly out of date though... one of the bridges in Maine is near where I used to live, and (appropriately enough) it collapsed/washed away a couple of years ago. :/ Fortunately, no one was injured. I hope it's not already deficient again!
- mdesjardins, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Hey Mitt Romney - WTF is up with Massachusetts and it's 52.3% deficient rating? ^_^
- ringelman5, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Quit picking on Mitt while he's busy re-posturing for hiis shill presidential run!!
The "Big Dig" tunnel under Boston Harbor is one of the biggest fiscal fiascos to hit MA with cost overruns in the BILLIONS equalling multiples of original estimate, not to mention the graft and substandard construction practices and materials. Concrete contractor was found to be recycling rejected loads and getting double payments. Leaks millions of gallons of seawater daily, which is hell on normal concrete. It's already falling apart. Definitely a conduit to avoid.
Many bridges today are being constructed with pre-stressed concrete T-beam members, subject to salt attack and weakness due to substandard concrete. Their integrity is no greater than that of the manufacturers.
- ringelman5, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Quit picking on Mitt while he's busy re-posturing for hiis shill presidential run!!
- oMeSSiaHo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1In my area there is a bridge that is about 80 years old and it doesnt show up on that list, I guess they dont build them like they used to. ;D
I wonder why this http://maps.google.com/maps?tab=wl bridge didnt show up on the list. I mean it seems pretty unsafe to drive across to me!- oMeSSiaHo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Sorry, couldnt edit. Here is the link http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=harrisburg+pa&ie=UTF8&ll=40.252239,-76.889995&spn=0.003038,0.007167&t=k&z=18&iwloc=addr&om=1
I'm a moron. - McGrude, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Um... which bridge? Your link didn't work.
- oMeSSiaHo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Sorry, couldnt edit. Here is the link http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=harrisburg+pa&ie=UTF8&ll=40.252239,-76.889995&spn=0.003038,0.007167&t=k&z=18&iwloc=addr&om=1
- Pile, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1On the details you can't really identify the proper location - there must be more source information that can help identify the location of some of these ambiguously-described deficient structures.
- batmanganese, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1A structurally deficient bridge is closed or restricted to light vehicles because of its deteriorated structural components. While not necessarily unsafe, these bridges must have limits for speed and weight.
A functionally obsolete bridge has older design features and, while it is not unsafe for all vehicles, it cannot safely accommodate current traffic volumes, and vehicle sizes and weights.
you all need to relax a little bit, most bridges are not unsafe :P - weebit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3ok so what did they do with all that tax they collect from all that gasoline we buy every year? The reason why they collect that tax is for the roads, and bridges is part of a road.
- p51d007, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Because politicians spent the money on pork projects. In Missouri, we got so fed up with the idiots in Jeff City, we forced a ballot issue
to make it a LAW that the money from gas taxes, etc, MUST be spent on roads. Gee....in a couple of years since it went into law, the
roads have improved A LOT! What a concept...- weebit, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1wow and here is the proof:

- EnglishVoodoo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0It doesn't matter if the bridge is old or new, well-constructed or engineered by wetbacks.
http://www.whatdoesitmean.com/index1026.htm
The only limit is your mind, Neo. - WaltDismal, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Bridges? Who cares? Bush is sending $30 billion to israel for weapons. That's where the real priorities are. Not US citizens' safety. And pretty much all of Congress backs it. Just remember who they are supporting when the 2008 election comes.
- p51d007, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Yep, it's all Bush's fault.........moron
- JimXugle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6In the Pittsburgh Area, the Parkway East (I 376) is one of commuter's major routes. Just west of the Squirrel Hill Tunnels, there's a concrete bridge that crosses the Parkway. This bridge has been falling apart for quite a while... First, they put a net under it to keep debris from hitting cars... now they've built a steel structure under it to catch the debris, since the net couldn't bear the weight.
So... this bridge is known to be dangerous by both the government and travelers, and money was appropriated to build a "roof" over the Parkway, but money couldn't be found to actually FIX the bridge. If the bridge in question were to collapse, it would cut off a major traffic artery and cause injuries to those on it, and under it.
Thank you government! Thank you so much!- nebrfan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2And this is the gub'ment that many want to trust with our healthcare system?
- obliviousfool, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Actually, having lived there for a while, Pittsburgh was the first place I looked on the list. It seems like it would be impossible to shut down some of those bridges for any length of time. For many of the main arteries there just isn't an alternate route.
- cavedog0, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Am I the only one that isn't worried about this problem? One bridge collapses out of a million, woopty doo.
- p51d007, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Yep, ***** breaks.....fact of life.....sad for the loss of life, but it happens.....get over it.
Just another way for the media to hype up a story to generate more viewers and get everyones panties in a uproar.
- p51d007, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Yep, ***** breaks.....fact of life.....sad for the loss of life, but it happens.....get over it.
- Sunfightersix, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Sweet...a bridge i cross has a rating of 2.0 is that good? hahahaha.... =/ but still chances are 1 in a billion it would ever fall while opened to traffic and 1 in a gillion it would happen when i was crossing it.
- CamelToad, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I don't care about the deficiency ratings, but a Java map that lets you click around on every state to see the total number of bridges is *****. I heard a radio news segment in Las Vegas yesterday saying NV has "among the safest bridges in the US". I immediately thought, "there are no bridges in NV, so shut up". Now I have PROOF! Fewest bridges in contiguous 48. What a glowing accomplishment, Silver State.
- PamalaLauren, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3So a bridge I drive across daily is structurally deficient. Not surprising though because it sure doesn't feel stable when I drive over it.
- Stalled, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0LMAO. Oh, the media. Nothing like scaring us pantless learning we've been driving over bridges about to collapse all our lives. :D
- DorqueRench, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Looks like it's time for a War on Unsafe Bridges.
- Tobark, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Looks like every dam bridge I know of in Camden Co. NJ is on the list. geez...
- Fl4sh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Every bridge I drive on daily is on the list. And this doesn't change my mode of thinking at all.
- jascowhiz0, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Don't forget that most of those bridges are perfectly safe to drive over. If the slope is too steep or a turn to sharp the bridge gets put on that list. Its like that in Louisiana... the Huey P. Long bridge is on that list because when it was built the lane is 9ft wide, which is what put it on that list. The bridge is perfectly safe. So that list does not reflect which bridges are truly in danger of crumbling, but the ones that don't pass new standards that out date older bridges.
- supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hey Bush, why dont you get those 500 billion dollars back from Cheney's company. You know, the one that moved to DUBAI recently. Then maybe you can repair the ***** bridges so Americans don't die drowned inside their cars. Oh, and with a few extra billion could you raise and reinforce the levees in New Orleans too?
As far as the oil in Iraq goes, why dont you take a few of those billions and oh, I don't know... Just ***** buy it off them. It's a lot cheaper than stealing it, especially when you are sending half the war money to your Vice Presidents' company in Dubai.
Thanks George, you're awesome.
Throw this bum out. In other countries they would've dragged him out of the oval office and hung him a long time ago. But you can do the civilized thing and call for his impeachment and put his ass on trial. - Elliuotatar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1According to this there are bridges in NH and between Maine and NH which have a rating as low as 2 out of 100!
- chrism1128, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I worked on a County Bridge Department in NJ for 2 summers. I would take the Bridge Inspector around to "inspect" the bridges. He had 2 tools: A small sledge hammer and a Camera. He would bang on parts of the bridge and take pictures of the stuff that fell out. If a bridge was in bad shape, the "repair" was to take the weight limit sign down and replace it with one that had a lower weight.
This one is "FIXED". Let's move on.
The guy was the only inspector for 1,000 bridges and overpasses in the whole county. You do the math. - Kevin108, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1That list is overly-difficult to read.
- Kevin108, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That list is overly-difficult to read.
- stuckinOK06, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I realize that this list wasn't intended for general use by the public, but the directions as to where the bridges are are nearly impossible to decipher. For ex, it gives "creek" 0.3 M W of Road A. Road A is 30 miles long. How many creeks are 0.3 M West of it and how in the hell am I supposed to guess? The NAME of the road on which the bridge is would be nice....
