- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -11/+39Amazing--our transportation infastructure is crumbilng. Why then do we borrow almost 2 billion a day to fight a war in Iraq?
- Darkhowling91, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22*****. We're all going to die.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15Mass hysteria much?
This train of thought is amusing. A group of people hijack planes, crash them into towers, therefore, everyone is a potential terrorist. One bridge collapses, therefore, all brides are suspect. - barryiggins, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8yes...I find the bride of Frankenstein particularly suspicious
- carpespasm, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9just keep in mind that anything above 50 means it's OK. bridges are apparently called deficient as soon as any minor problem occours. it's just the term used to describe anything that's not in the height of perfect order.
- mishabear, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Gee, that couldn't have anything to do with the red states being in the desert or flatlands while the coastal blue states have salt water air.
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7depends on what you mean by best? The autobahn is very very well taken care of. Then again, the size of the autobahn isn't comparable to the size of US highways. So it's hard to get a fair comparison.
- JimXugle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6In the Pittsburgh Area, the Parkway East (I 376) is one of commuter's major routes. Just west of the Squirrel Hill Tunnels, there's a concrete bridge that crosses the Parkway. This bridge has been falling apart for quite a while... First, they put a net under it to keep debris from hitting cars... now they've built a steel structure under it to catch the debris, since the net couldn't bear the weight.
So... this bridge is known to be dangerous by both the government and travelers, and money was appropriated to build a "roof" over the Parkway, but money couldn't be found to actually FIX the bridge. If the bridge in question were to collapse, it would cut off a major traffic artery and cause injuries to those on it, and under it.
Thank you government! Thank you so much! - capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6because were really good at crumbling transportation infrastructure?
- mdesjardins, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Great Link! I think it's slightly out of date though... one of the bridges in Maine is near where I used to live, and (appropriately enough) it collapsed/washed away a couple of years ago. :/ Fortunately, no one was injured. I hope it's not already deficient again!
- p51d007, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Because politicians spent the money on pork projects. In Missouri, we got so fed up with the idiots in Jeff City, we forced a ballot issue
to make it a LAW that the money from gas taxes, etc, MUST be spent on roads. Gee....in a couple of years since it went into law, the
roads have improved A LOT! What a concept... - dupswapdrop, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9Hey we can always find money to shoot people in far off lands, build stadiums for rich ball players to play in and fund campaigns for crazy politicians. But money to fix things for the general good forget about it!
- Richandler, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Um these aren't all Bridges as people know them. In fact they are overpasses. Very short ones. Not even half the size of the on in Minnesota. The list is also inaccurate because 2 listed as deficient in my area was just reinforced.
- jpmoney03, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Not 100% but I think it was 50.0. I would think it is 0.0 now though.
- jmpeagle, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7click on the states. The vast majority of counties have NO problems whereas only a select few counties have ALL the problems. It's a government problem, not a weather problem.
- j33buscr1p3s, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Appropriately enough both threats have the same solution: Duct Tape.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Now days, in the Mississippi
- Wink, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Isn´t it also one of the oldest modern infrastructures of its type? The US led the world in their highways and dams and such, but they´re starting to get a lil´ old..
- Ungh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Strange, but a number of bridges that they listed in my area have been replace in the last 7 years. This list must be obsolete, at least for my county.
- oMeSSiaHo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Sorry, couldnt edit. Here is the link http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=harrisburg+pa&ie=UTF8&ll=40.252239,-76.889995&spn=0.003038,0.007167&t=k&z=18&iwloc=addr&om=1
I'm a moron. - shipple, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Although I don't like the War on Iraq, I don't think it has anything to do with infrastructure. The feds shouldn't be paying for roads, imho.
- PamalaLauren, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3So a bridge I drive across daily is structurally deficient. Not surprising though because it sure doesn't feel stable when I drive over it.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Bridges? Who cares? Bush is sending $30 billion to israel for weapons. That's where the real priorities are. Not US citizens' safety. And pretty much all of Congress backs it. Just remember who they are supporting when the 2008 election comes.
- xmkatx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3One of the worst! Good to know ALL the bridges I cross are deficient. Not surprised.
- weebit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3ok so what did they do with all that tax they collect from all that gasoline we buy every year? The reason why they collect that tax is for the roads, and bridges is part of a road.
- cw1242, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Props to TXDOT for keeping Texas' 49,000+ bridges in good shape.
- WhatNot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4What was the bridge that collapsed rated? I have no idea where this bridge would be located in Minnesota.
- KenMo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Then please don't drive.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Quit picking on Mitt while he's busy re-posturing for hiis shill presidential run!!
The "Big Dig" tunnel under Boston Harbor is one of the biggest fiscal fiascos to hit MA with cost overruns in the BILLIONS equalling multiples of original estimate, not to mention the graft and substandard construction practices and materials. Concrete contractor was found to be recycling rejected loads and getting double payments. Leaks millions of gallons of seawater daily, which is hell on normal concrete. It's already falling apart. Definitely a conduit to avoid.
Many bridges today are being constructed with pre-stressed concrete T-beam members, subject to salt attack and weakness due to substandard concrete. Their integrity is no greater than that of the manufacturers. - Tobark, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Looks like every dam bridge I know of in Camden Co. NJ is on the list. geez...
- Kevin108, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That list is overly-difficult to read.
- chrism1128, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I worked on a County Bridge Department in NJ for 2 summers. I would take the Bridge Inspector around to "inspect" the bridges. He had 2 tools: A small sledge hammer and a Camera. He would bang on parts of the bridge and take pictures of the stuff that fell out. If a bridge was in bad shape, the "repair" was to take the weight limit sign down and replace it with one that had a lower weight.
This one is "FIXED". Let's move on.
The guy was the only inspector for 1,000 bridges and overpasses in the whole county. You do the math. - obliviousfool, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6This list is a little bit scary.
- stuckinOK06, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I realize that this list wasn't intended for general use by the public, but the directions as to where the bridges are are nearly impossible to decipher. For ex, it gives "creek" 0.3 M W of Road A. Road A is 30 miles long. How many creeks are 0.3 M West of it and how in the hell am I supposed to guess? The NAME of the road on which the bridge is would be nice....
- Fl4sh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Every bridge I drive on daily is on the list. And this doesn't change my mode of thinking at all.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Nice to see one of the roads that I travel on is rated at a 34.7.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6How much has been spent on rebuilding the infrastructure of other countries, when we can't even keep up our own. If it's not steam pipes exploding it's bridges falling or some other disaster next week. Way to go Mr. Prez. You've been doing a great job protecting American Life by ignoring the real needs of this country.
We don't need terrorists to take down our cities and bridges, we can do that perfectly well on our own through neglect. - Elliuotatar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1According to this there are bridges in NH and between Maine and NH which have a rating as low as 2 out of 100!
- mdesjardins, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Hey Mitt Romney - WTF is up with Massachusetts and it's 52.3% deficient rating? ^_^
- msaleem, on 10/10/2007, -9/+10Wow. Absolutely great find. Dugg!
- floorman56, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Maybe if Minnesota wasn't spending 1 BILLION DOLLARS on a baseball stadium they could fix the bridge.
- supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hey Bush, why dont you get those 500 billion dollars back from Cheney's company. You know, the one that moved to DUBAI recently. Then maybe you can repair the ***** bridges so Americans don't die drowned inside their cars. Oh, and with a few extra billion could you raise and reinforce the levees in New Orleans too?
As far as the oil in Iraq goes, why dont you take a few of those billions and oh, I don't know... Just ***** buy it off them. It's a lot cheaper than stealing it, especially when you are sending half the war money to your Vice Presidents' company in Dubai.
Thanks George, you're awesome.
Throw this bum out. In other countries they would've dragged him out of the oval office and hung him a long time ago. But you can do the civilized thing and call for his impeachment and put his ass on trial. - obliviousfool, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2There are quite a few railroad bridges on the list. I saw one with a rating of 3.
- obliviousfool, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Actually, having lived there for a while, Pittsburgh was the first place I looked on the list. It seems like it would be impossible to shut down some of those bridges for any length of time. For many of the main arteries there just isn't an alternate route.
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3don't worry I have a bridge rated at 3.0 and 4.0 nearby... but it's IL in near the WI border. So I wasn't expecting much.
- thatsoccerchick, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2actually the state with the best bridges (following the percent in either catagory statistic) is arizona, followed by nevada and THEN minnesota..
- AlphaEta, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I also noticed a few railroad bridges on the list. Of course, one in my home town has a rating of 15.5, so I hope there isn't too much hazardous material being transported on those rails!
- jcaino, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3i'mexpecting to see PA on that list. we have a tremendous amount of bridges.
- Kevin108, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1That list is overly-difficult to read.
- DorqueRench, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Looks like it's time for a War on Unsafe Bridges.
