A lot of people have the belief that China is just about to self-destruct because of a range of problems. From an ineffective political system to social problems, unrest, etc etc. My question is, if these problems are so grave, why haven't the country self-destructed already? What makes right now so different from 10, 20, 30 years ago? When arguably the country was in worse shape than now.

  • cyberdork, on 08/18/2008, -1/+3The big difference between China and the US is that the US always wanted to dominate aka 'liberate' the world, while China couldn't care less about the outside world (except Taiwan of course).

    In a way China is more capitalistic than the US, since they are only interested in the natural resources of other countries, but not in their political systems.
  • empirefalling, on 08/18/2008, -0/+2America has been in decline for several decades beginning in the 1960’s. Just recently the World Body has witnessed a long awaited and celebrated decline in American military power and economic capacity.
    The defeat of American military forces in Afghanistan and Iraq and the rise of Socialism in South America and elsewhere has signaled the beginnings of a New World Order without the US as a director.

    America is a not much more than village fool, it’s ability to lead in any category has been reduced to nothing due to it’s moral , social, economic and educational putrefaction. Most Americans are ridiculed and mocked through out the World Body. The term “American” now elicits amusement and pity from those outside of the US. From it’s idiot dictator to the simpletons that form the vast majority of the American populace, American society is viewed as a throwback to prehistoric epochs. Much of the World Body awaits the break up of the US with it’s populace and lands put to much better employ through international supervision and guidance.

    Obama may be a watered down tonic to those inside of the US, but to the six billion persons who must share the planet with such a malignancy as the United States, Obama is little more than a sugar pill. The rescue of the planet the environment and humanity will only advance when the US is rendered negated and unable to threaten the World Body and it’s progressing society.

    • thespiff, on 08/18/2008, -2/+1That sounds like a great summary for a novel, with just enough ties to reality to make it believable, but not nearly enough to make it true. Consider writing a book instead of trying to pass this off as legitimate political commentary.
  • BXRWXR, on 08/18/2008, -1/+1The only part I see them failing in is ideas. A lot of the appeal of the west is the desire to be like us. That goes along way. True, they end up building it, but we thought it up.

    As for the next gen - no one wants to live like a Chinaman, not now and not in the future.

    In Canada and almost every Western European country you get free health care.
    In countries like Denmark, France, and Sweden your college tuition is paid for through taxes.

    The quality of life in America seems to be going further down the *****. With the increasing gap between the rich and poor, retraction of constitutional freedoms and rights, coupled with robot politicians; I'm wondering how many other people are considering moving abroad?



    Baby Boomers sure had it good.

    Cheap Education (Which you didn't need to get a good paying job)
    Cheap Housing (Adjusted for Inflation -- compared to today's prices)
    Good Wages (You could make ends meet with just one parent working)

    But they went and ***** up the world. They were by far the most self-absorbed generation ever.
