- inactive, on 06/06/2008, -0/+63Quote from the hospital staff: "It was a scream to wake the dead"
- kmartshopper, on 06/06/2008, -1/+58And I'm sure doctors will be puzzled at the resulting rise in people yelling at those in a coma.
- TheCosmicFool, on 06/06/2008, -0/+50She'd probably be pissed at first like STOP THAT RACKET!, then be like oh, thanks..
- rudy23, on 06/06/2008, -0/+49Love how the picture says Guide to Austria. Very relevant.
- packman86, on 06/06/2008, -0/+33Take that Mr. T
- londubh, on 06/06/2008, -0/+21Adult humans are programmed to respond to the wailing of small children. It may have been a primal response that awoke her.
- slib, on 06/06/2008, -2/+17Dug for having the most hilariously irreverent posting picture ever. EVER.
- troyfoley, on 06/06/2008, -0/+12Austria... not Australia.
- Jwoey, on 06/06/2008, -0/+12What the hell is a motor truck?
-American - kmartshopper, on 06/06/2008, -5/+17And for everyone else in my boat:
define: lorry
Motor truck used for transport of goods. Note: Motor truck is an American term. British synonym for motor truck is Heavy Goods Vehicle. ...
Source: google - fas2, on 06/06/2008, -0/+11"The doctors could not believe how quickly she got better once she had woken up."
- dodgejon, on 06/06/2008, -3/+13Maybe she was faking the coma to avoid testifying against the Bluth family.
- HappyDamnation, on 06/06/2008, -1/+10She was already in a coma. So why give her sedatives?
- majortom1981, on 06/06/2008, -2/+10I was in 3 comas (i am not lying i actually wish they never happened, doctors still dont know what caused it). IT was most likely the loud noise that did it not who screamed. She must not have been in a deep coma if a screamed woke her up anyway. I remember waking up and not knowing who anybody was or where i was so she must not have been that bad if a scream woke her up.
Also The article states this
"Doctors reduced her sedatives to try to rouse her and her family talked to her, but she showed no reaction, so the medical staff suggested she might respond to her granddaughter Leela, aged 23 months. "
Which means the doctors put her under themselves so i dont know how much merrit this has. - chewbacca77, on 06/06/2008, -0/+8It looks like you're being dugg upside down.
- leukhe, on 06/06/2008, -1/+9Oh no, not yet again a "miraculous wakeup from coma'. In reality if you are in a coma for a extended time, you do not suddenly wake up like a movie /soap. It is a very very slow waking up.
The article talks about "opening the eyes" and probably nothing more really happened for the the first days. - adamcrigger, on 06/06/2008, -0/+8Maybe she was just asleep the whole time.
- zadadka, on 06/06/2008, -2/+10"British synonym for motor truck is Heavy Goods Vehicle"
...er, no, it's a lorry.
Heavy Goods Vehicle is it's class in licensing regulation.
source : a Brit (me). - inactive, on 06/06/2008, -0/+7Motor truck? Lop off the "motor" part. If you were to use the term "motor truck" to refer to a "large vehicle used to haul stuff" in the U.S. you would be ridiculed. These are simply called "trucks" or "semis" (articulated tractor-trailers.)
- Wormfather, on 06/06/2008, -0/+6Damnit, kids need to respect there elders. When I was that age, I'd never scream at my grandmother.
- sparf, on 06/06/2008, -0/+6Sometimes a person who is technically in a coma will still react to pain stimuli.
In those cases, it's not uncommon for sedatives to be administered, easing the perceived suffering. - sparf, on 06/06/2008, -0/+6The Glasgow Coma Scale nicely defines it.
I have a loved one fluctuating between 1 and 2, and occasionally I register a 6.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glasgow_Coma_Scale - unknownpoltroon, on 06/06/2008, -0/+5My family has firm instructions, if I am ever on life support/in a coma, send in a naked redheaded chick with a Guinness. If I do not respond, just break me up for spare parts and bury whats left, I'm beyond help.
- PopcornDave, on 06/06/2008, -0/+5No they also tried a clock radio, but the woman just kept hitting the snooze button.
- goffy59, on 06/06/2008, -0/+5What if she had a memory of a scream and the girl's scream allowed her to unlock a routine which woke her up. Maybe a habit of helping the kids at night when they scream from a scary dream or etc.
- JeffLongoria, on 06/06/2008, -1/+6Woken up right in the middle of her sleep
- rudy23, on 06/06/2008, -0/+5better than not waking up at all
- sb76117, on 06/06/2008, -0/+4i was in a chemical coma for a few days.my mom whispering in my ear is what woke me up.
***** bacterial meningitis. took almost half my hearing too.. - sparf, on 06/06/2008, -0/+3Pain response is a very basic neurological function.
Breathing, detectable brain wave reactions to light and sound... many processes of the mind can continue seemingly normally for years without a return to higher cognizance.
Every person reacts to certain injuries in their own way, and it's impossible to say what's normal, or what is to be expected.
The brain is an amazing organ, and an interesting field of study. It is also among the least understood.
But in this case, no, I wouldn't call it weird. It was exactly the way it was. And I'm happy for her and her family. - slib, on 06/06/2008, -1/+4Actually, there's a scale doctors use to determine a patient's level of consciousness. "Coma" is a very, very loose term.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glasgow_Coma_Scale - PopcornDave, on 06/06/2008, -0/+3One hopes you specified a body type that you wanted. I'd hate for you to be woken by a 500 lb redheaded monstrosity ( unless that's what you wanted ) only to be frightened to death.
- EtherGnat, on 06/06/2008, -0/+3Good, it seems you're critically short on punctuation.
- Fullvinyl, on 06/06/2008, -0/+3Um...do you mean "irrelevant"?
- minorthreat, on 06/06/2008, -1/+4Do you feel well rested when you awake from a coma?
- broodking, on 06/06/2008, -0/+3so MR T isnt the only one that can wake ppl up from coma's
- Nudar, on 06/06/2008, -1/+3And a lorry is some sort of giant british monster?
- shadowcode, on 06/06/2008, -1/+3I agree... and I wish I knew that before someone I care about ended up being in a coma... Finally waking up from a goddamn coma is only the start of a long long long road to go.
- HappyDamnation, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2Therefore it's not so weird she was woken up by a scream. If she was responsive to pain, she would be responsive to other stimuli as well.
- boredhousewife, on 06/06/2008, -1/+3That little girl has a harsh reality coming someday when she's screaming at a coffin and wondering why they aren't getting up.
- morningchai, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2I'd hate to have been another patient sharing that room. ;)
- schrutefan, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2They tried everything except screaming WAKE UP!
- specialK16, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2Wait wait wait. Where the ***** did you get all that?
- yogurtslinger, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1Damnit I just logged in to say something to that effect.
It's all good though. - nihility, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1Now will you please turn on the Cartoon Network and get the hell out of here?
- aComa, on 06/06/2008, -3/+4How offensive.
- shaun1018, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1I'd have to agree with you... This seems like *****.
- spacewhale1, on 06/06/2008, -1/+2going to austria caused me to have a comma once
- oxymoron69, on 06/06/2008, -1/+2Here in my part of canada, we call them Transport Trucks.
Short forming it would just be transport, although most would know if you also called it a semi-truck, but that parlance isn't used that often lol. -
