guardian.co.uk — Colombia's coca crop increased by 27% last year, a surge which has shocked the United Nations and raised fresh questions about Bogot á's US-backed "war" on drugs. Cultivation unexpectedly boomed in the country that is the world's leading supplier of cocaine, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime's annual report, published yesterday.

C'mon - we all know that the "war on drugs" is just the cover for supporting the drug lords we deal with while fighting the ones who won't share their profits with the CIA/Wall Street. It's about profit, not stopping the flow of drugs into this country.- CoolHandLuke70, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2Wish "we all" really DID know that! I am with you. The biggest drug mover and dealer is the CIA and most of the world knows that except a good majority of Americans.
- yellowcakewalk, on 07/04/2008, -1/+9The "War on Drugs" is doing what it was intended to do. Enrich drug-war-profiteers and keep a USA military presence in one of the last puppet regimes in Latin America.
P.S. dugg also for "crackdown" double entendre - peacepower, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3The War on Drugs is the perfect political manoeuver to guarantee the status quo. Pols get points with parents for condemning evil drug dealers. They win points (and contributions?) from drug dealers by keeping prices high and eliminating competition. Forbidding and cracking down on drug use is free advertising for dealers, enhancing the appeal of the "forbidden fruit." The police, Army, DEA, and prison systems get their budgets increased to combat this "insidious threat to our way of life."
The more we wage war on drugs, the more drugs we get. It's funny how that works!
