Cold War: Syria strengthens military alliance with Russia
timesonline.co.uk — "Of course military and technical cooperation is the main issue. Weapons purchases are very important," said Mr Assad. "I think we should speed it up. Moreover, the West and Israel continue to put pressure on Russia."

- kemp34, on 08/20/2008, -2/+17I just hope these lunatics don't get us all killed.
- yellowcakewalk, on 08/20/2008, -2/+16I'm no fan of either Assad's police state nor of Putin's gang, but it's not their side that has been ratcheting up the tension for the past 8 years.
- kemp34, on 08/20/2008, -1/+18I agree. I am no fan. But the Neocons have been playing a lunatic game of chicken with our pocketbooks and even our lives. I want new leadership. The U.S., and the world at large, need new U.S. leadership.
- 911ArtStudent, on 08/20/2008, -2/+16Assad's secular Arab nationalist police state might be preferable to the Saudi regime or the one we installed in Afghanistan after the Soviets left.
- Kizilbash, on 08/20/2008, -2/+12You have a point there Art, Assad's Syria is a scary place but it is the only country left in the Middle East that actually protects its religious minorities. It has also admitted a huge number of Iraqi refugees (and still has Palestinian refugees too).
- yellowcakewalk, on 08/20/2008, -2/+10Syria's sizeable Christian minority seems to be doing fine also. There are Greek Orthodox churches and Syrian Catholic congregations. Christians were treated equally in Iraq, too, until the USA occupation.
Many people forget that Tariq Aziz, Saddam's foreign minister, prick though he was, was a Christian.
Another salient point about Syria is that they don't tolerate religious extremism. - stienster, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3I've started feeling like if al quaida is a real organization, since USA decided they're enemies, then perhaps al quaida is really on the side of us sane folks. Same goes for Syria and the Palestinians. And quite honestly, I think Russia is the only hope for a sustainable future. If not for their strength and resistance to US world dominance, the desires of the elites would have been fulfilled years ago.
- MarkEarhart, on 08/20/2008, -0/+20If I lived in Syria I would Russia as an ally too considering all that is going on in the Middle East and South Central Asia. I sure wouldn't want America or NATO as my ally!!!
- Fangsinmybeard, on 08/20/2008, -0/+15That is a good way to block the BTC pipeline. That will definitely boost oil prices.
- FrankHope, on 08/21/2008, -0/+7This is Russia's response to US and NATO regarding Georgia and Poland.
Now that the Olympics are almost over, it's time to:
"Let the wargames begin!"
Unfortunately, you realize of course that Israel and AIPAC will use this as another excuse to get the Congress to subsidize Israel's military at the expense of the US taxpayer. - JagPop, on 08/21/2008, -0/+8Don't forget that the Georgia pipeline may be considered Israel's pipeline.
- jodimcmullen, on 08/21/2008, -0/+5The top US military commander in Europe, General John Craddock, arrived in Tbilisi on Thursday for talks on rebuilding Georgia's armed forces "We will have to help them rebuild because they are a partner in the war on terror. They are going to ask us, I'm sure, to replace and rebuild. I think that is probably what will happen."
Asked if any US trainers were involved in fighting with Russia, Craddock said: "I have no information. I cannot confirm or deny that. We have noone missing. There were no reports of anyone wounded among US trainers."
