Cold War 2.0: US Weighs Punishments for Russia
time.com — Scrambling to find ways to punish Russia for its invasion of pro-Western Georgia, the United States and its allies are considering expelling Moscow from an exclusive club of wealthy nations and canceling an upcoming joint NATO-Russia military exercise, Bush administration officials said Tuesday.

- skipthefrog, on 08/12/2008, -1/+6It sounds more like a schoolyard clique than international politics.
- YodaJones, on 08/12/2008, -2/+14***** the U.S. and their punishment. How about punishing the U.S. for war crimes against other countries.
- michaelpinto, on 08/13/2008, -2/+6Well Yoda we can start off by giving California back to Mexico...
- YodaJones, on 08/13/2008, -0/+7Hell Yeah! And Manhattan back to the Indians. And Alaska back to Russia. And the Alamo is useless anyway, and there are more Mexicans in Texas than Texans so they might as well have that too.
Hey, we should just give the whole place back to ENGLAND and let them deal with the ***** mess we've made of it. - Bagos1, on 08/13/2008, -0/+3Great idea!

- Rubab, on 08/12/2008, -0/+13For Russia, Ossetia has been an important strategic base near the Turkish and Iranian frontiers since the days of the czars. Georgia is also an important transit country for oil being pumped from the Caspian Sea to the Turkish port of Ceyhan and a potential base for Washington efforts to encircle Tehran.
- richmomz, on 08/13/2008, -0/+3That's scary - if the U.S. uses Georgia as a staging area for an attack against Iran with Russian troops massed nearby things could get ugly real fast...
- PolishLogic, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1"Could" being the operative word. Things "could" have gotten ugly on any given day during the Cold War too, but they didn't. Not even close. That includes the Cuban missile crisis.

- michaelpinto, on 08/13/2008, -0/+9What does it take for us to get serious about an alternative energy policy? Billions of dollars are going to go to Russia, Iran and Venezuela as long as idiots are still driving SUVs and trucking in tomatoes from Mexico. The only reason why Georgia is important and Zimbabwe doesn't count comes down to oil. Not only that but if we came up with some better fuel solutions it would increase the stability of other countries like China and India while helping Europe and Japan. Yet we just seem to not get it the point...
- Bagos1, on 08/13/2008, -0/+3Spot on!
It's quite interesting, there used to be wars over salt because it was the only way to preserve meat,.It was the oil of the day. Once alternatives were found, salt became as common as dirt.

- algaeturd, on 08/13/2008, -1/+7Wait a second...we're going to punish Russia for doing something they most likely had to do? I feel for Georgians but Georgia went on the offensive, not Russia. Meanwhile, we're still occupying Iraq?
Something doesn't add up here.
Do we really want to heat the Cold War up again? Negating the years of toil it took to calm down relations with Russia?
And are we really in the position to tell countries who they can fight and not fight?
America has taken on the position of 'Do as we say or we'll threaten you into submission.' We have completely given up on respecting other countries, other cultures and we've created the schoolyard bully mess.
We're not really a role model to be followed at this point with the whole Iraq thing. People are going to hate the U.S. more and more as we continue to try to push countries into political submission. This can't last long. - ThinkOutTheBox, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2Umm... punish Russia?? Now I've heard everything. There isn't much we can do besides just sit down shut up and take it. Put economic sanctions on Russia and they will jack the price of the natural gas and oil they supply to Europe. When are the American people gonna wake up and take to the streets and throw these ***** monkeys out on their asses and sue them for every ***** penny they have after throwing them in Jail for perjury. It's simple we don't work they don't get paid. Believe me there is nothing to worry about. You don't have to worry about going to jail or prison or any of that. Once people see that we are taking a stand against these people that have high-jacked our government more and more people will join in. And it is all peaceful just don't go to work simple. http://www.votestrike.com/
- sheasie, on 08/13/2008, -0/+10While the rest of the world's news outlets are reporting a bi-partition ceasefire, America's main stream media (primarily: TIME-WARNER, ABC and NEWS CORP/FOX) appear to be encouraging conflict escalation !! WTF is up with that ?!
- orangefly, on 08/13/2008, -0/+8here's a conspiracy theory for you....the republicans needed some kind of eminent threat to retain power....iran isn't convincing enough, plus in order to have enough troops to invade iran we would have to draft soldiers....so we instrument georgia attacking Ossetia knowing russia would retaliate against our ally, resurrecting the greatest enemy threat of the 20th century since germany....republicans unite over the fear that obama would not be up to facing russia in a stand off....
just a thought....- silentboom, on 08/13/2008, -0/+3It's only conspiracy it it's not true. The facts are we want to put our missile shield in, we want Georgia to become a part of NATO to weaken Russian influence. The Neoconservatives would love nothing more than to seize influence in that area and Russia was in the way. I don't think they expected Russia to hit back so hard after Georgia attacked. I don't blame th Russians. They are being backed into a corner by our Imperial government and New World Order buddies. Remember New World Order is not conspiracy theory. It was publicly announced on TV by Bush Sr. on September 11th, 1990. The video is on youtube if you want to see it yourself. Read about the "Project for a New American Century".
- Hrodrik, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1I wouldn't call it cold war. More like meh skirmish.
- rearlgrant, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1A fitting end to the Bush II "presidency" -- the reconstruction of the Russian empire.
- PolishLogic, on 08/13/2008, -1/+1It was bound to happen, regardless of who is sitting in the oval office.
