Digg Townhall Tonight!
Tune into the live Digg townhall tonight at 5:00pm PST/8:00pm EST.
Colbert runs Global Food Crisis story
americangoy.blogspot.com — "Little stories that fall thru the cracks during presidential campaign". He made two points: 1) This story "fell thru the cracks" and 2) Biofuels, made from corn, are the problem; and also, he hit the high fructose corn syrup angle in his monologue. I swear, the man reads my blog.

- AlwaysAwake, on 04/22/2008, -0/+6Can humor raise awareness about a deadly problem ? Or just encourage us to remain in a false sense of security ? Frankly speaking, I'm not passing stuff on for ego food. I don't care a whit who takes the credit, as long as public opinion is awakened to the real problems as quickly as possible, and our alleged "public servants" are compelled to take some belated actions to minimize the damage, and buy us some time, instead of feathering their own nests, as they are otherwise busy doing.
- Dubstep, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3I think it safe to assume that we can make allusions to comics, such as Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, being the philosophers of our time. While they may use humour as their primary means of communication and dissemination, that does not necessarily mean it any less effective.
- TrevaLVF, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2Some people respond better to information that is delivered through comedy, than from a person that gives a serious breakdown of sobering facts. Also, more people shut down when somebody attempts to inform them in angry, or shrill rants. Maybe the humor is like mixing tropical punch with bad tasting medicine.
- Dubstep, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1It very well could be. Interesting conclusion, by the way.
- TrevaLVF, on 04/22/2008, -1/+7Considering, the US government pays farmers to destroy a percentage of their crops in order to keep prices up during bumper crop seasons, and also to prevent any unsold produce from being used to feed the hungry people that can't afford to buy their food, the new use of these food sources as fuel just adds to our problems.
The US government also pays subsidies to corn growers as it is.
We can have bio-fuel without relying on food sources. Hemp and common weeds can be used for that purpose.- mystcnurse, on 04/22/2008, -0/+5The government also puts Mexican farmers out business, by subsidizing GMO corn that is then shipped to Mexico and costs the Mexicans a lot less than the normal corn grown by their neighbors. This is NAFTA at its best.
- MarkusGarvey, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3Steven nails it on corn...everybody should check this out...

- treelovinhippie, on 04/23/2008, -0/+3Sad that to get a massively important story through to the American public takes a light-hearted, comedic presentation which just ruins the whole severity of the report.
- LilBambi, on 04/23/2008, -0/+2I hear ya treelovinhippie ... but sometimes it really does take a little 'levity' to hit the mark. At least initially.
- LilBambi, on 04/23/2008, -0/+2I am still trying to pick myself up off the floor from laughing so hard!
